ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Julius Caesar was a Roman "dictator." What exactly was
that?

In times of emergency, such as enemy attack, the Roman
Republic could appoint a temporary king. This person,
given the title of "dictator," was appointed by the
senate and had supreme control over Rome for a
specified period of time. His word, while he was in
power, was law. Hence, "dictator," from a Latin word
meaning, "I have spoken." Generally, a dictator held
office for six months, a time that would -- hopefully
-- be adequate to handle the emergency.

What kind of animal is a Portuguese man-of-war?

The jellyfish known as a Portuguese man-of-war is
actually not a single animal. Rather, it's a colony of
animals--made up of several hundred individuals of the
same species. The members of the colony are adapted to
perform different functions. One animal may form a
float, while others provide the tentacles for fishing,
and yet others digest the food caught by the tentacles.
A fourth group is responsible for reproduction. (Wonder
how you get to be in the lucky group that simply
reproduces?)

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
_______________

I Like Digging In The Dirt!

That's right, I like digging in the dirt. Oh! I know it gets
on the clothes and in the pores and under the fingernails.
I know that working in the dirt in the hot sun makes you
smell like the potato you forgot at the bottom of the
pile all winter.

But - - -

It always makes me feel closer to nature, to my Maker
and to my family. That's a whole lot of plus'.

When I get into our rock garden in the spring each year
I am reminded of new birth, new growth, a new season.
It is invigorating.

Yet the single most important benefit I derive from
digging in the dirt is that it gets me centered. A few
hours working in the garden will bring me back to me
and from there I gain strength and power.

It is the same old story, get quiet and still and there you
will meet your Maker.

My son, who was working with me the other day, made
the comment "I haven't been this happy for a long time!"
(he was talking about the deep inside peace, confidence
and power he was getting back).

There is something mystical, even spiritual about getting
close to the earth. It energizes.

Often, in the summer I will grab an afternoon snooze
right directly on the earth (I found a place that fits my
body just right). When I awake I am refreshed,
energized at the core level, much more than an
ordinary afternoon snooze. It heals.

Take off your shoes and walk with your toes in the
grass, sand or gravel. Get used to being at ease with
Mother Earth. Slow your mind down until you can begin
to see the energies you receive from "the system".

Some places on earth are stronger than others. There
are what is known as magnetic nodes situated in patterns
all over the earth and many of these locations have
developed into spiritual centers. Many are monasteries,
ashrams or just plain places where there is a high
concentration of spiritually minded people. All have a
means of physically tying to the "earthly experience".

Nonetheless, right where you are right now is a good
place to get used to the earths powers. Try it. Experience it.

I LIKE DIGGING IN THE DIRT!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 7 of 22

The thyroid is situated in the front of your neck and
cushions the parathyroid glands. Feel your way down
your throat (trachea), and come to the space just above
the V. stay on the “rings” and you will feel the
thyroid gland. If it’s in good working order (and
that’s what you want,) you would need to guess at the
exact location. It is soft and blends into the throat
area. The thyroid is responsible for growth hormones
(can you see how there is much cross-over in hormonal
activities?)  Not only do these control growth of your
body, but also the growth of your cells. Two important
hormones are secreted by the thyroid gland: thyroxine
and thyrocalcitonin. They are common in our medical
language now. Thyroxine helps to regulate the metabolic
rate of all body cells. This is the rate at which cells
burn fuels from food to produce energy.  Metabolism is
the physical and chemical processes and reactions
happening in your body. It is the generation of heat
and energy by your cells. Energy production is
important as it relates to the ability of your cells to
use oxygen. And you know that oxygen is essential for
life. Thyrocalcitonin helps regulate the calcium (and
phosphorous) levels, mainly in the bones of your body.
(This has to do with balance of the electrolyte system
in your body.)

Here is a very important point. As the level of thyroid
hormones increases in the bloodstream, so does the
speed at which chemical reactions occur in the body.
Can you see how relatively easy it would be to test for
abnormal thyroid conditions? A decrease in thyroid
hormone production can result in decreased energy
(lethargy), slow heart rate, dry skin, weight gain,
constipation, and feeling cold all the time. You can
feel this sluggish metabolism. This condition is called
hypothyroidism. Remember that a slow pulse reflects a
slow heart rate and that can translate into too little
or inadequate amounts of red blood cells carrying
oxygen and other life-sustaining elements throughout
your body. But if you have too much thyroid hormone
being secreted, it creates the opposite result. Too
much thyroid hormone may result in weight loss,
nervousness, tremors, excessive sweating, increased
heart rate and blood pressure, protruding eyes, and a
swelling in the neck, a very noticeable Adam’s apple
(goiter). This condition is called Hyperthyroidism. If
you think this through, you would understand that your
entire body functions would be speeded up, using moiré
fuel that normal.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

"The world is full of parents like that Mae. I
grant you there are many more who aren't, but
there are lots who trust their children. I mean
wisely trust them. They kids have to show you they
are trustworthy. They have to earn that trust. It
isn't easy for the kids, but it is worthwhile."

"You think Eloise and Mazunta are going to
have any more children?"

"Gee, Sue, we don't really know. They haven't
said anything about it. We've teased them a
little, kind of fishing for the answer to that
question but all we get is a no. I don't think
they will. They have the two and they're growing
like weeds. It's amazing how fast kids grow up. I
look at our boys and I find it hard to believe
they were once babes in arms."

"Alewka, all the world is changing, all the
time. Absolutely nothing is constant. That is one
of the problems with man. He is always reluctant
to change. Mother Nature must force him. It is
when man realizes that change is inevitable, then,
rather than wait for it he takes charge of his
life and creates his own changes the way he wants,
then man can begin to realize he is in charge. If
he then goes inside to find his Maker he will have
the power."

"What you speak of is the reason why some gain
wealth and riches, while others remain as they
are. The ones that take charge are the ones who
progress. If they can refrain from becoming
takers, if they can refrain from being greedy to
the point of walking on people, then begin to give
they will then start the laws working in their
favor to the point where they will be put in
charge of much."

"That's right Sue, but that still has man
living in the material world, rather than the
spiritual world. Man still has to learn that life
is made up of the physical laws, the mental laws
and the spiritual laws. It is only when he learns
and understands the spiritual laws that he has
dominion over all things."

"You know, I think that might be what is
happening with all the changes in society. I am
wondering if, while we don't like to see many of
the changes happening, I am wondering if they
don't represent a bit of an evolutionary thing
where man is coming out of the 'Victorian ethic'
thing. That strict code of behavior was founded
on ignorance and control. It ruined millions of
lives and kept man in the dark. All growth, of
whatever kind, is accompanied with what we call
growing pains. All change requires we learn and in
that learning we sometimes go astray. Maybe the
aids epidemic, maybe the cancer epidemic, maybe
all the diseases we have today are a function of
the growth and evolution of society. Maybe all
those things are just growing pains where we
haven't yet found the way but in the looking have
made choices that have brought on these problems.
Maybe society will find the door and one day walk
through en mass."

"Oh! I hope so, Sue. That is what our work is
all about. Slowly, but surely, we keep trying to
point folks in the right direction. Some catch it
and flourish. Others fall back to where they were.
It can be seen that man seems to be stumbling from
one disaster to another. The real question is
whether or not he is learning in the process. Are
the rich and greedy controlling the masses to
serve the rich and greedy? What folly."

"Hi you folks. Oh! Hi Mrs. Miles. Hello Mrs.
Wiley. When did you two arrive?"

"Hello, Tim, Sharon. Oh, we got here this
morning. We've been talking about you two most of
the day." Mae winked at Alewka, "We were wondering
when you two where going to get married. From the
look of it, all you are waiting for is the
ceremony."

"Boy, Mrs. Wiley. You get right into it don't
you. Actually Sharon and I have been talking about
that. We think we want to marry in the fall of the
year. Actually we have decided on the Labor Day
weekend, out at the lake. The weather is usually
warm and balmy then, the colors are spectacular,
and it would be a fitting end to a wonderful
summer. Will you please come?"

"Tim, I wouldn't miss that for anything.
That's wonderful."

The whole room stood and came over to Tim and
Sharon to congratulate them. There were hugs and
kisses all around.

"You sure know how to surprise your folks, you
two."

"I know Dad. We were going to ease into it
with you, but Mrs. Wiley just asked the question
straight out, so I decided to answer."

"That's fine, son. I'm happy for you two.
We've been wanting this to happen for quite some
time now. I look forward to it. Have you told your
folks yet Sharon?"

HA! HA! HA!

I recall a time when my son was about 18 months old. I
had him strapped in a backpack and was rushing to catch
the bus. Apparently I mis-stepped and fell down an
entire flight of stairs, (13 to be exact). I was
bruised, bleeding and I had torn my jeans ... but my
main concern was, naturally, for my child.

My fears were alleviated though when from behind me I
heard a gleeful giggle followed by, "Again!"
