TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

When was the first recorded human-to-human blood
transfusion?

When was the discovery of the existence of different blood
types made?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What made the dodo extinct?

Dutch sailors. It's believed that hungry sailors on their
way to the Spice Islands of Indonesia liked to stop off on
the island of Mauritius for dinner. The dodo, of course, was
completely defenseless, having lived a very comfortable life
on an island with no predators.

When was the first blood transfusion?

Farther back than you'd think. The first recorded successful
blood transfusion occurred in England in 1665 when physician
Richard Lower transfused blood from dog to dog. Two years
later, in France, the first blood transfusion to a human
occurred and caused a furor. Instead of human blood, lamb's
blood was infused into the patient. The patient survived,
but the outcry over what was perceived to be a violation of
religious principles caused the practice to be outlawed.

In India, because of a tribal custom, a 9-year-old girl was
"married" to a stray dog. This is because her first tooth
appeared on the upper gum and this ritual is to protect the

Microsoft profit miss may be latest blow to morale
Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:23 PM ET
By Scott Hillis

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote,
Profile, Research) share price may not be the only casualty
of the software powerhouse's surprise earnings miss.

It might also hit company morale, becoming the latest gripe
of employees who are already disillusioned with product
delays and a once high-flying stock that has stagnated for
the past three years, analysts said.

"There are some folks who have been there for a long time
and who will resent the way things are being run as a
bureaucracy. And maybe they were there for the big stock
run-up and they're seeing the stock not move now," said Matt
Rosoff, analyst with Directions on Microsoft.

"If you think things are not being run well, then yesterday
will lend credence to your arguments," Rosoff said.

Microsoft shares tumbled 11.4 percent to $24.15 on Friday,
their biggest one-day drop in 5 years, a day after the
company said earnings would be hurt by increased spending to
stay abreast of competition such as Google Inc. (GOOG.O:
Quote, Profile, Research).

A company spokesman had no immediate comment on employee
morale.

Investors treated the move as the latest stumble by the
Redmond, Washington-based company, which last month said it
would delay the release of the next versions of its
cash-spinning Windows operating system and Office software
package.

Minimsft, a popular blog run by a Microsoft employee who
advocates a drastic slimming-down of the company, lamented
the results, exclaiming: "Yee-ouch! Right in the kisser!"

Wryly remarking on the idea that Microsoft could eventually
pull out of the doldrums, the anonymous author wrote: "It is
always just a few quarters out. For what, the last five
years?"

In the 1990s, Microsoft's lucrative stock options made its
employees the envy of the business world. Its launch of
Windows 95 had touched off a stock rally that minted
in-house millionaires up through the collapse of the tech
bubble in early 2000.

At the start of 1995, the shares traded at about $4, and
they doubled almost yearly before they peaked just shy of
$60 at the end of 1999.

Microsoft, stopped offering stock options in 2003 and now
issues restricted stock grants.

Granted, Microsoft has maintained its reputation as one of
the most desirable companies to work for, thanks to generous
benefits, flexible hours and a corporate campus nestled amid
the Douglas firs and snow-capped peaks of the Seattle area.

"Microsoft certainly looks after its employees, there's no
question about that. They're hiring, they're adding staff,"
said Jupiter Research analyst Joe Wilcox.

"But it's hard to get excited sometimes when your company
delivers increasing revenue quarter on quarter, yet you read
hype about Apple and their products and they get all the
buzz," Wilcox said, referring to Apple Computer Inc.
(AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research), maker of the acclaimed
Mac computers and iPod music player.

One commenter on Scobleizer, another widely read blog by
Microsoft employee Robert Scoble, raised the specter of a
conspiracy.

"They don't want the stock to go up. Why? If the stock goes
up, the company risks losing more talent to retirement.
It'll go back up when the company has hired and built out
the next era of employees to carry the torch on, without the
risk of losing them to early retirement."

Microsoft has grappled with the issue of declining morale
before, most recently last fall after the departure of
several high-profile executives.

In an interview with Business Week magazine then, Chief
Executive Steve Ballmer boasted that 85 percent of Microsoft
employees felt proud to be at the company, saying that
number was "as high as it's ever been."

One anonymous commenter on minimsft probably wouldn't count
himself among their ranks, claiming to have sold five years
worth of employee stock after the earnings report.

"The press seems to be picking up on the fact that employee
morale is down. About freakin time! If the company doesn't
invest in its employees, I regret to say this but the future
for any such company is grim."

Bones: Don’t Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 5 of 9

All or any of these problems translate into the loss or
continuity of functions: the local functions of
reproduction, nourishment, and waste management in the
actual cell plus the systemic (general) functions of
blood cell formation and mineral storage. The amount of
damage will depend on the severity of the
“interruption”. There are some chronic conditions that
do not become apparent for quite a while. Osteoporosis
and Paget’s disease are two of these. Both have to do
with leaching of nutrients. Paget's disease is a
metabolic bone disease that involves bone destruction.
When the subsequent re-growth happens, it results in
bone deformity. Osteoporosis is the result of calcium
deficiency or loss. And if you recall, one major
assignment of bones is to be the storage facility of
minerals including calcium and phosphorous.

I want to add a word about CARTILAGE and joint stress.
Cartilage is a soft but very strong tissue. It is the
protective layer that cushions the joint and acts as a
shock absorber. It also lubricates the joints naturally
with an element called glucosamine. This is called a
“building block” because allows the body to manufacture
its own synovial fluid or lubricant. And it secretes
this lubricant each time the joint is gently moved.
Where does this building block come from? Nutrients in
your diet. So a normal action of walking will produce a
certain predetermined amount of lubrication. Your joint
moves comfortably and easily. However once the body
creates a need for more than the normally-required
mount and the building block is not keeping up with the
demand, problems can happen. And the obvious one is the
deterioration of the padding. Over time and usage the
cartilage in your joints is gradually worn down. Your
body rebuilds the cartilage as it becomes worn. It also
replaces the shock-absorbing synovial fluid naturally
and routinely, but it requires glucosamine. Thus the
joints are always protected until it no longer has
access to the nutrients or the demand outstrips the
supply. Remember too that healing requires adequate
blood supply. Damage to the area will decrease the
flow. Cartilage is slow to rebuild itself. And if
ingredients (building blocks) used for cartilage repair
are in short supply, the recovery can be even slower.
Something has to change for healing to occur.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

4Now for the story

Different things happen to people as they grow and
learn. It is clear that Tom and Tlang had issues to resolve
before they could wholly experience a trouble free marital
relationship. Those issues really had nothing to do with
either one of them except, without choice, they happened to
Tlang.

Yet each, living by higher law, recognized that all
these things happen to a soul for a purpose. It permits the
soul to teach and train. It was not nice that Tlang lost her
parents while she was so young. It wasn't nice that she was
forced into sex slavery. Yet, somehow, all these things work
together for her good.

Who knows, maybe she would never have met Mae and Susan
had she not been in that restaurant. She may never have come
to higher law had she not been at that place and time and
that would have likely been impossible had her parents been
alive.

It is just another lesson that no matter how hard or bad
we think conditions are they usually work out for our good
and we are better, stronger people because of the
experience.

Knowing these things, Tlang could see that the lesson
was for her and while younger, she had not dealt with it
properly. She had hidden it so it would no longer bother
her, but now, here it was. It rose up and slapped her right
in the face. She knew she had to deal with it like an adult,
with sound, clear thinking. She also knew that too many
folks do this. They do not deal with issues, but hide them,
only to find they keep recurring until the lesson is
learned.

Tlang asked Tom for some alone time. She wanted to feel
again all those things. She wanted to look at them and
extract any good they may have and then discard the thoughts
and feelings so she could get on with her life.

Tom left the hut and went outside. It was now dark. He
could hear animals on the hunt. He could sense the things
Tlang was going through and he knew she was on the right
path.

Funny, as we go through life we think that just because
we no longer think of things like heavy emotional moments,
then they no longer affect us. Nothing could be further from
the truth. First of all, any thoughts tied to emotions
become burned very solidly in ones brain and psyche. We must
deal with them from there and if we do not they harbor the
potential to harm our lives, our relationships, our attempts
at reaching a goal.

And secondly, quite aside from the daily influence they
have on our lives, our thinking and our desires, they
plainly and simply can pop up out of nowhere when we least
expect or want them.

The lesson is clear. Take those emotions, those thoughts
and with a clear head, emotion free, make a decision on
whether they are right or wrong and how you are going to
deal with the issue. Most things, especially in our young
lives, happen to us, without our conscious "asking" for it.
When things happen to us when we are young they are setting
up our lives so we will learn the lessons we need this time
around.

However, once we begin to lead our own lives and take
charge of them then we begin to invite things we may not
want. We also are responsible for who and what we are. So if
you are involved with life in things you do not like nor
want then deal with it, calmly, clearly and finally.

Once you have done this in good clear conscience, these
issues will no longer bother you. It the issue persists,
then you persist on dealing with it. You will win.

And that is exactly what Tlang was doing. She was
looking at all those old feelings, thoughts and ideas. One
by one she was taking them and looking at them. Step by step
she was absolving herself of any responsibility for being
attached to them. Then she saw them as she put each on, in
her mind, on a raft in a river, and when she pushed the raft
out the thoughts, emotions and all that pertained to them
floated away forever.

Tlang rid herself of the damage those thoughts had
created for her and she was now ready to receive Tom. She
called.

Tom came calmly back into the hut. "How are you doing
honey?" He was concerned.

"Thank you for that time alone. I had some thoughts I
had to deal with. I'm sorry I had not dealt with them
earlier. I just never thought they would come up again. They
all pertain to my early childhood, about my parents and
then about all the nasty things that happened to me. I have
dealt with each of them now. I am not to blame for that
stuff. Others are and they shall reap the reward for their
actions." Tlang brushed her hands as if to shake off the
last vestiges of thought and emotion attached to those
experiences.

Tom had watched and stayed out of the discussion she had
been having within her. Yet he appreciated what she was
doing. He had left her alone to accomplish the task and she
had won. My how he loved her. He was crazy about her.
He sat down beside her and put his hand on her cheek. "I
love you, Tlang. I had no idea you went through those things
as a youngster. Anything I can do to help?"

"Tom, come make love to me."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Yankee: What is the origin of the term "Yankee"

The word comes from a nickname for the dutch, Jan Kaas,
meaning "John Cheese." Holland has long been famous for its
cheeses and so the nickname Jan Kaas or "John Cheese," is
appropriate to them. In pirate days, English sailors adopted
the term as a derisive name for the Dutch freebooters. In
this sense it became familiar in New York. Then the dutch
settlers there - noting its unpleasant significance - began
to apply it to the English settlers of Connecticut because
they believed the Connecticut English to be far more
enterprising than ethical. The term spread to the other
colonies - though at first it was almost always used to
refer with dislike to the citizens of a colony farther
North. It still is in certain sections - often with a "damn"
placed before it.

HA! HA! HA!

President Calvin Coolidge, 30th U.S. president (1923 to 1929)
was a man of very few words. One Sunday he went to church,
but his wife, Grace, stayed home. When he returned, she asked,
"Was the sermon good?"

"Yup," was Coolidge's brief reply.

"What was it about?" Grace asked.

"Sin."

"And what did the minister say?"

"He's against it...!"
