TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What American physician, in charge of the nationwide
collection of blood for soldiers in World War II, was
legally barred from donating his own blood?

What animal, related to the giraffe, is the size of a horse,
the shape of a donkey, and has zebra stripes on its
backside?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

When was the first recorded human-to-human blood
transfusion?

In 1818, more than a century after the animal blood
transfusion, a woman dying in childbirth was "reanimated"
with a transfusion of human blood from her husband. The
physician who performed the procedure was James Blundell, a
British obstetrician. (An earlier human to-human
transfusion, by a Philadelphia doctor in 1795, was not
published.)

When was the discovery of the existence of different blood
types made?

Transfusing blood got a whole lot safer and more successful
in the early twentieth century after Karl Landsteiner, an
Austrian physician, discovered the human blood groups A, B,
and C (C was later renamed O). His colleagues later added
the blood type AB.

Mistakes Make You Wealthy!

A man is recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how
he is feeling.

"I'm O.K. but I didn't like the four-letter-word the
doctor used in surgery," he answered.

"What did he say," asked the nurse.

"OOPS!"

While we may not want to be in this or similar condition
this little humor is funny.

It is also serious because it brings to light two major
points by which we should guide our lives.

The first is that we all survive mistakes. Yes there are
some we do not, major ones, like car accidents. But for the
most part our lives are made up of making mistakes,
correcting, making more mistakes, correcting again, all
until we get to the point we want. We all survive mistakes.

The second point this little joke makes is that we will make
mistakes. Not only will we make mistakes, the fact is we
must make mistakes. Without them we would accomplish
nothing.

Any effort we put forth trying to be "perfect" is misguided
thinking. If we would be good, if we would succeed, if we
want to achieve - look forward to your failures. That's
right. Embrace them and take the lesson from them. Each
failure means that is one step closer to your objective.

Put an image in your mind of climbing a stairway to the
stars. At the very top is your goal, your objective. (I hope
it is a big one) As you begin to walk up that flight of
stairs you begin to notice that each step has writing on it.
Each step says "This is another step that won't reach your
goal - but if you don't take this step you will never reach
your goal. This one might be a mistake, it might be a
failure, but the road to your objective goes through me.
Take the step"

In our modern world of computers and high technology we must
all learn that is precisely the way computers operate.
Robots in factories, guided missiles, auto pilots in
aircraft or ships and other computer applications all
function on making a movement, correcting course, making
another movement, correcting again until the final
destination is reached. These devices are built on the model
- man.

Do not worry over mistakes. Do not fret over failure. Try
again. Change course and go at it again. When that fails,
change course again. Keeping your eye on the prize and
embracing each step makes objectives appear before your very
eyes.

An attitude like this will make each day more enjoyable and
the "trip" to your objective will be fun.

Bones: Don’t Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 6 of 9

How can damaged bones be repaired? Simplistically, you
would restore whatever is missing. Without crucial
nutrient and blood supply, the cells start to die. So
it is imperative that all the ingredients for healing
are restored as quickly as possible. It may appear to
you that bones don’t have any place for blood cells to
provide food, but through special mechanisms, blood is
circulated. And when it stops or is interrupted, the
food intake stops as well. Then decay or damage sets
in. So it is crucial for nourishment and waste
management to continue to be present and function.
Healing takes time: months in most cases. (The actual
bone growth over the damaged area is called a callus
and there are expected, known timeframes for healing.)
The medical community makes every effort to deal
quickly with the obvious problem. One problem that may
arise, if something isn’t done fairly quickly, is the
presence of clots. These may be caused by the very
actions of the bone marrow in the shaft of the bone. It
houses your blood supply and other elements including
fatty tissue. If the bone is broken, any of these
elements might now be released into the mainstream of
the body. This is one way how clots may be formed.

Most treatment deals with realigning the damaged area
to its normal (anatomical) position. The area needs to
be immobilized. This can be done in a number of ways.
You can use materials such as tape, cast, bone plates,
screws, splints, taping, and slings. Often if the
damage is slight or uncomplicated, the repairs can be
done in an emergency room or doctor’s office. If they
are complicated, hospital facility intervention would
be required.

An “interesting” thing will happen when a bone is out
of alignment. It puts a lot of unnecessary strain on
the surrounding areas. These may cause additional
damage. So to reduce this strain and prevent further
damage, re-alignment is crucial. Also the ends of the
bones would not heal properly if they are not in
alignment. The tissues of the bone need to be connected
effectively. It has to be bone to bone or muscle to
muscle. You can imagine what would happen if a piece of
muscle gets caught between two jagged edges of bone. It
would die. Also the bone wouldn’t heal properly and
quickly.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

4Now for the story

For Tom and Tlang the next three days vanished as if
they had never existed. They slept, made love, slept, made
love, slept. They didn't appear outside until after the
third day.

As Tom walked out of the hut it was as if he had never
seen this world before. What happened? Where had time gone?
Tlang was the same. They each knew what happened and
they loved it, but they had lost three days completely.

"Did you overcome that emotional problem or what? You're
an animal when you get going." Tom laughed.

"I suppose you're not?"

"Well, I guess we'll just have to call a truce and call
each other an animal. Are you okay?"

"Yes, honey. I had a good long look at what my attitudes
were and why I had them. I made some decisions and I am
fine."

Tom walked over to her and put his arms around her.
"You're something special, you know that?"

Tlang made no response. Tom carried on, "You sure dug
deep to get to the bottom of this problem. You make love
like there never was a problem. I hope you got it all. That
was wonderful."

"I got it all. If anything else comes up it will be
minor and you won't even know about it. Shall we go for a
walk?"

"That might be a good idea. We haven't been anywhere for
the last three days."

"I know. I thought it was going to be forever. I didn't
think you'd ever quit. Don't misunderstand me. I liked it,
but you just never quit.

Hand in hand they walked along the bluff above the
river. They saw animals of all descriptions, snakes,
lizards, birds, crocodile, you name it. It was as if they
had their own private zoo.

"You know what? Do you ever think about the fact that
life is going on everywhere on this planet and we only see
our small part right here? I mean people are just getting
up, others are just going to bed. Some are working some are
not. Some are at war others are at peace and everyday life
goes on without us. When I come here and I look at the
animal crossing I think to myself that thousands of animals
have crossed here before, maybe millions. We weren't here to
witness it but I find it interesting to think on these
things. Some folks are having kids, some are burying people.
All of life is teeming, everywhere, not just here. Every
time I get someplace different I sense the others that have
been here before me. Ever get that?"

"Every once in a while I wonder who I am and what am I
doing here! It goes along with what you're saying. It's
neat, Tom. But right now I just want to think about you."

"Oh! Ho! Are you playing the part of the hot little
siren or what?"

"Oh Tom! You're just like all men. Your brain is between
your legs not on your shoulders."

"I guess that's a problem with men isn't it?

"No, not all men. Some learn self control. They're the
nice ones. The rest of you, well, look out there," Tlang
pointed to a herd of animals, "most of you are no
different." She looked at Tom and had a gleam in her eye.
These Henrys were teasers and she had to learn to get back
at him.

For his part Tom saw the sparkle in her eye and was
about to grab her. Tlang was too fast, mostly because she
expected this. She was off and running. She was fast, too.
Tom had to really run hard to catch up to her and the moment
he thought he had her she twisted a different direction
faster than he could blink. She was fleet of foot just like
an animal.

Than he figured it out. Tlang wasn't normally this
nimble. He had chased her before and caught her. She was
using higher law to keep him from catching her. Two could
play this game. He laughed out loud. "I'll get you for that
you little vixen."

Tlang was running fast. She loved to run. Every time Tom
got close she would see herself off in a different
direction. He was getting close again so she got ready to
switch her direction. She did and ran right into a soft,
invisible shield. Before she could recover, Tom was on her.
She couldn't get away.

"Ahh Haa! You thought you could get away from me did
you." They were both laughing so hard they could hardly
speak.

"How did you figure it out? You were so busy I didn't
think you would figure it out for a long while." Tlang was
laughing.

"You forget I've chased you before. You weren't nearly
so nimble then. Anyway I had to catch you before I was
completely out of breath."

"So it was you who was cheating. You didn't know what I
was up to you just put up the shield because you were
desperate."

"Calm down now. You know I'm smart enough to figure you
out. I spend too much time watching you not to know you.
You're full of pranks but every once in a while I catch on."

Tlang laughed. They hugged and lay on the grass,
watching the clouds pass overhead.

"You know what? We haven't had any rain for a long time.
I wonder when we're going to get some?"

"Maybe not for a long time, Tom. That is what this
migration is all about.

"I love you Mrs. Henry."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Zany: Where did a fool get the name "zany"?

In the plays performed by the Italian commedia dell' arte -
in which the servants acted as clowns and bore the name
zani. The word "zany" was first used in English to designate
a comic performer attending on a a clown - a "stooge".

St. Peter and Satan were having an argument one day about
baseball. Satan proposed a game to be played on neutral
grounds between a select team from the heavenly host and
his own hand-picked boys.

"Very well," said the gatekeeper of Heaven. "But you realize,
I hope, that we've got all the good players and the best
coaches."

"I know, and that's all right," Satan answered. "We've got
all the umpires!"
