What purpose do the zebra stripes on the okapi's backside
serve?

What's unusual about the okapi's tongue?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What American physician, in charge of the nationwide
collection of blood for soldiers in World War II, was
legally barred from donating his own blood?

Physician Charles Drew, an African-American, was legally
barred from donating his own blood because of his race.

What animal, related to the giraffe, is the size of a horse,
the shape of a donkey, and has zebra stripes on its
backside?

The okapi. Once thought to be a myth, the okapi is now
recognized as a real animal, not a legend. Found in the
Congo in Africa, the creature is so elusive that scientists
for many years doubted its existence, despite numerous
sightings during the 1800s by pygmy tribes and travelers.
Not classified until 1901, the okapi was one of the last
large mammals to be "discovered" by scientists.

Optimize Life Now™ . . . with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
-----------------

When The Watering Hole Shrinks!

I've heard it said that when the watering hole shrinks, the
animals look at each other differently. That's the way it
is at work when downsizing is occurring, too.

We look at each other differently. Our competitive nature
may leap to forefront. Our suspicions about people's
motives and behaviors arise. We watch for political moves.
In fact, we become hyper-vigilant. Everything is a 'sign'.
Watch out for this.

You can only do the best possible job you can do. Be wise.
Be pro-active. But, be assured that some things in the
equation are entirely out of your control. When you live
each day in fear, you are paying attention to what you don't
want. Newsflash! Paying attention to what you do not want
attracts just that into your life.

Does that sound simplistic? In fact, it is not. It is
simple but profound. Who is in charge of your attitudes?
Who is in charge of your sense of self? Who is in charge of
your behavior? Obviously, it's you. What are you paying
attention to? How is it affecting the quality of each day?

I was working with a coaching client the other day who was
obsessing about losing her job. At the beginning of the
lay-offs she had been twenty-five from the bottom of the
list. Now, she is fourth--and with twenty-five years on the
job. Naturally, she was concerned. And, she was at the top
of her 'what if?" game. What if I lose my job? What if the
economy doesn't turn around? What if I can't get another
job? What if I don't have the rent money? What if my
relationship suffers? What will happen to my pension?

I didn't suggest to her that there is no wisdom in keeping
her eyes and ears open. I did not suggest that she hide her
head in the sand about the current conditions. Of course,
reality exists. I did suggest, though, that her power was in
her ability to keep the bigger picture in mind. Who was
she? What were her strengths? How did she demonstrate what
was important to her every day at work? What does she have
control over and how can she exercise her options?

Fear causes folks to panic, to forget themselves. Normally
pleasant, cooperative people clam up and keep their cards
close to their chests. Out-going people may talk more
because they are anxious. Quiet folks may withdraw for the
same reason. Fear exaggerates the negative in life. Don't
let that happen. Get on top of it right now.

I'm talking about your overall game plan in life. Make it
as positive as you possibly can. Focus on what you want,
where you're going and how you're going to get there. Make
your conversation about what you want to attract into your
life. Fill your mind with pictures of your ideal job, ideal
relationships, ideal life. Only when you can clearly see
the outcome you want are you likely to take a direct path to
it. Remember that line from Alice in Wonderland, "If you
don't know where you're going, any path will take you
there." Know the destination and create the path.

How does this translate to daily life at work when fear
lurks? Again, your greatest choice every day is your
attitude. Where are you placing your energy? How
pro-active are you being? Are you willing to ask questions
that will help you make good choices and better plans?

Secrets seem to abound in workplaces that are dwindling.
Some people are 'in the know', others, 'out of the loop'.
Ask questions. Get the facts. Be grounded in reality while
steadfastly focused on the outcome you want.

If you believe in cooperation and collaboration, demonstrate
it in the workplace consistently. Remember, whatever you
value must be part of what you do and say every day, no
matter what the climate or scenario. Don't be pulled off
course from your beliefs and values by fear. Don't let the
attitudes, fears and follies of others sway you from your
path.

Even if the lions are at the door, your best plan is to keep
your head. Be true to your values. Be pro-active. And,
definitely, don't feed them.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Bones: Don’t Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 7 of 9

There are some times, when you need to have more
involved “restoration” treatment done. For instance a
broken hip, which really means the femur or long bone
in the leg, is broken or actually the tip (head) of it
has broken right off. In this case the surgeon would
either put in a “plate and screws” or remove the head
of the femur. They would then insert a strange looking
metal hip “prosthesis” into this hollow shaft. This
artificial hip would then fit snugly into the hip joint
(the iliac crest). The area’s muscles will keep it in
place. That will allow the person to walk again. Once
you have restored the proper alignment to any damaged
bone, it’s time to feed the body so it can heal as
quickly as possible. If you have read this column for a
while you will know that optimum nutrition, lots of
water, and rest will go a long way to healing the
damage.

Eventually, some sort of therapy to help mobilize the
inactive bone will have to be done. That could be with
a therapist or your own efforts. This will have to be
done under the direct supervision of a health care
professional. If you do this too quickly, you can
re-injure the area. If you take too long, healing might
be set in before alignment is in place. Be careful in
the use of heat and cold therapy. You need to know how
to use them properly: the misuse of either could do
more harm.

But what about areas you can’t see to reach them as
easily as a leg bone? The bones in your middle ear? Or
the skull? Or the labyrinth of your inner your ear?
Bone shows up on all sorts of diagnostic tests such as
x-rays, or MRI and CAT scan. “Healing” as new bone
growth shows up as well. Many times if the damage is
not too severe or the bone pieces are not out of
alignment, doctors will choose not to do more than
immobilize the area. They would let “nature takes its
course”. They would rely on your body’s natural ability
and tendency to heal itself. If you have ever had a
fractured rib, many times the area isn’t even strapped.
The reliance is on the body’s natural anatomy (negative
pressures) and healing powers.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

4Now for the story

As they were laying there on the grass they both got a
call. As it was coming in Tom rolled over and looked at
Tlang. The call was from his Dad, Sam Henry.

The thoughts went like this, "Hey guys, we are all
gathering at Mazunta's and Eloise'. Join us when you can. No
rush, today or tomorrow."

Tlang looked at Tom, "I wonder what's up?"

"I'm not sure, honey, but I suppose we should go! What
do you think?"

"Oh, Tom, of course we'll go. If the family calls we
need to be there. Your Dad never calls unless it's
important."

"You're right. I know. I just don't want to leave this.
I was just getting used to it."

"You're just a sex maniac, Mr. Henry. That's all you
are." Tlang laughed. She loved to tease him.

Somehow there was a new relationship between the pair of
them. They seemed to feel more complete, whole. They shared
a new found confidence with one another and somehow they now
even felt stronger.

Before, when they abstained from sex it was nice but as
strong as their feelings were for each other it did not
compare to what they felt for each other now. With the union
complete, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and now
physically it set up a strength between them that made them
feel solid as a rock. Each was aware of it and loved it.

Tom leaned down and kissed her. She reached up and put
her arms around him and pulled him close. She wanted this
man. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. He
was gentle, giving, considerate and loving. Tlang knew he
would express these qualities to her forever.

For her part Tlang wanted to make this man happy any way
she could. She wanted to wait on him, serve him, yet he was
not demanding of it. He, too, wanted to wait on her and
serve her.

With the pair of them always wanting to give to the
other any squabbles they had were on who could give to who.

"I'll tell you what. Maybe we should get dressed and go
over to Sis's. It sounds like some kind of family
gathering."

"I think you're right."

With that thought they each went into the hut and
changed, or made themselves look decent. They combed their
hair, brushed the leaves and grass off each other.

"Ready?"

"You bet"

They held hands and each saw themselves at the village
in South America. Believing they were there, they opened
their eyes and there they were, on the beach.

They casually walked up to the village, meeting and
speaking with people on the way.

Much to their surprise nearly everyone was there from
the wedding. It was as if they simply all moved over here to
continue the party.

As they walked up toward Maz's and Missy's place they
saw the common was getting ready to start a fire. Everyone
appeared to be there, even Billy and Sonora, Mae, Susan,
David and Pam. Tim, Sharon and the newborn were there.

This was a powerful convention. The love coming off this
group was touchable. Riata was there. Oomano, Romano and the
kids were there. Miguele, Abetta, Mombudo, Kenyata, Boolanga
and Karmuz, all were there.

Then, in came Amenti and Reno.

A cheer went up every time one of the newlywed couples
showed up.

"Hi, folks! What's up?" Tom spoke to his Dad and Mom as
he and Tlang approached.

"Tom, our storyteller is going to wrap up the story of
our lives. I thought we might want to share some of the
things we learned in the last while, with our readers.

"But why, Dad. Why is it coming to an end?"

"Well, son, it is a truth that even when you live by
higher law your life takes on a certain sameness. Oh! We go
here and there helping out mankind as we are needed and that
sounds exciting to those who do not live by higher law. Yet
even we do many of the same things over and over.

Our storyteller wanted to show as many of life's lessons
as possible and as many spiritual lessons as possible and
after that we end up doing what we have always done. The
original excitement is gone. The lessons are the same and
the time has just simply come for us to say good bye."

"That's kind of a shame. I liked sharing my life with
others that they may see what they can do if only they
believe. I will miss them."

"All of us will Tom. We all enjoyed having the people
look in and visit."

The group was all sitting around the fire circle. The
fire was not yet started. They had all been called from far
and wide to partake in this last farewell.

The ladies of the village were up to their usual
hospitality efforts, even though most of them lived by
higher law now. The young kids were running around, burning
off energy and the teens were now sitting with the adults
talking and listening, the typical preparation for adult
responsibilities.

It would be another couple hours before the evening fire
would start.

NOTICE-NOTICE-NOTICE-NOTICE

The story, The Saga Of Pinehill, will be drawing to a close.
It was an incredible success but is no longer serving the
purpose for which it was intended, to bring life's lessons
and spiritual lessons to the readers. For your information
our first entry for The Saga Of Pinehill was April 02/02. We have
been running the story nearly everyday for over four years.
Actually the last day the story will be published will be
day 1413.

The story has spawned one book, with another in the process
of being printed. The intent is to have four books printed, then
write up a "summary" book dealing with all the "life's lessons"
and "spiritual lessons" found in those four.

I want to thank you, one and all, for being loyal readers and for
your support. If our wishes come true, who knows there may be
another story appear.

The planned termination date is this upcoming Friday, May 5/06

Thank you.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Aback: What is the reason we say that a person who is
surprised is "taken aback"

It's a nautical term. When the sails of a square-rigged
sailing ship are suddenly carried by the wind back against
the mast - as sometimes happens in a strong gale - the ship
is "taken aback" and stopped dead. So, too, a person halted
abruptly by some new development is "taken aback".

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

A man was set up on a blind date and he took her out for
dinner to a very expensive restaurant to make a good impression.
The waiter approached the table and asksed to take their order.

The lady began ordering practically everything on the menu:
shrimp cocktail, pate, Caesar Salad, lobster, crepes Suzette,
with no regard to the price.

The man is getting very upset, as he never thought she would
order so much! She then stopped and looked across at him
and asked, "What do you suggest I wash it down with?"

The man smiled and replied, "Well my dear, I can think of
nothing so fitting as the Mississippi River...!!!"
