Which bugs are the first to show up on a dead body?
Blow flies are often first on the scene and female blow
flies will lay their eggs on the body. Staphylinids show up
next. After the blow fly eggs are laid, predatory rove
beetles or parasites that feed on maggots will arrive. When
the body is older and drying out, certain mites will be
dominant, while blow flies will have disappeared.
Can bugs help determine the CAUSE of death?
In some cases, they can. Sometimes a bug will actually be
the "murderer," as when a bee sting causes a fatal allergic
reaction or a person dead in a car wreck turns out to have
been distracted from the road by a wasp or bee sting.
Maggots can be used to determine cause of death in another
way. Sometimes a corpse is found in such a state of decay
that it is impossible to sample stomach contents to see if
the dead person was poisoned. Forensic entomologists,
however, may be able to obtain a sample of the chemical from
maggots on the body, empty puparia, or larval skin casts.
The presence of poison in a body can also affect the
life-cycle of the bugs, providing homicide investigators
with important clues. Forensic entomology is still a fairly
new discipline, but scientists are working to understand the
process of bodily decay and improve accuracy. One university
actually maintains a "body farm" where bodies donated to
science are left outside in various situations (under water,
buried, not buried) to see what bugs do to the corpse.

Microsoft brings back the towels

Two years after it took the ax to a range of employee
benefits, Microsoft is introducing new perks for its staff.
The plan, known as MyMicrosoft, was unveiled to the Redmond,
Wash., masses this week.
A Microsoft representative said that the human resources
team at the software maker "spent a great deal of time over
the past year gathering employee feedback from all over the
world about their experiences at Microsoft. The feedback was
instrumental in helping shape the new MyMicrosoft program."
Among the new incentives are a management development
program to boost managers' training, more investment in the
staff share plan, and a career model framework to apply to
all Microsoft employees globally.
As part of the program, the company is promising employees a
greater emphasis on a nicer working environment.
Microsoft introduced other lifestyle services for its geeks,
including laundry, dry cleaning and grocery
delivery--although it won't actually be paying for the
services itself, just giving staff on-site access to them.
It also revealed that "the towels are back," referring to
the popular towel-laundering service for sweaty staff
washing at work after exercising or cycling in to campus, a
perk that was axed in the benefits cull in 2004.
Those cutbacks followed a call by Microsoft CEO Steve
Ballmer for the software giant to make $1 billion worth of
cuts. At the time, he warned that even Microsoft's free soda
policy was under review.
Now, after a series of high-profile defections, including
that of Kai-Fu Lee, who founded Microsoft's Chinese Labs, to
Google, Microsoft is reversing its earlier stance.
It still has some way to go, though, to rival the alleged
charms of the California GooglePlex. The search giant's
headquarters has its own doctors, child day care centers and
free gourmet meals at one of the four themed dining areas on
campus.

And in many, many cases, these are three of the most common
side effects of drugs! You, as the patient in front of the
doctor, are mentioning that you have this problem.
Ironically or maybe naturally, you are now prescribed a drug
to help you deal with that effect! I have a huge list of
drugs that list tinnitus or noise in the ear, as a side
effect: not a possible one, but the actual known side
effect. And what do Meniere’s symptoms include? Tinnitus,
vertigo, dizziness, hearing fluctuation, and inner ear
pressure! And then the traditional treatment for this
disease (which it really isn’t) they prescribe more drugs
such as diuretics and antihistamines that have these listed
as side effects! Round and round we go!
Now let me throw this at you. Supposing you already have a
reading of 140/80 (seen as hypertension) and your body
adjusted to it. Now you are given medication in the hopes of
lowering that reading and most often for good reason. But
the side effects are dizziness and a few other things. So
you go back to your doctor. Tests are done to rule out the
possibility of any abnormality in the balance part of your
ear (inner ear). To stop the vertigo, a diuretic is given
(traditional treatment). And you already know that a
diuretic will drop your blood pressure. And no one checks to
see what you other drugs you are on. Now you are on TWO
drugs (and maybe even more) that lower your blood pressure!
Can you see any possible problems? It happens all the time!
Whose responsibility is it to check? I think it is yours. No
one checked before prescribing the drug(s) and no one took
the time as the prescription was filled. You are the person
walking around with these effects. Does anyone other than
you care much? I doubt it. So make it your responsibility.
Question all your drugs if you suspect this could be the
case with you.
Here are things you can do right now to give yourself some
control over your fears. First I would discuss it with your
pharmacist. They are trained in drugs and chemical
interactions. Read the inserts in all the drugs you get.
Believe them. By law, any negative effects have to be
listed. These happen all the time. When you choose to take
these chemicals, there will be affects: good and bad. Bring
in all your drug slips and any OTC products. Herbal products
are the basis of many drugs. So bring that information if
you are on any. Normal vitamin and mineral supplements are
mentioned often as being a problem, but I believe true
supplements are food and you wouldn’t mention foods
normally. But don’t confuse herbals and vitamins. They are
not the same. One very important action you need to do is to
take your blood pressure for a few days or even two weeks.
Follow the directions on the machine you choose. Stick with
that one machine: you can be confident with the results.
Read the directions for clothing. If you push up your shirt,
you could well change the reading, but it should tell you
not to do that on the instructions. Next you want to get
accurate and consistent readings. Do NOT compare a morning
reading with an afternoon one. They will not be the same!
And if you go to your doctor’s office, ask them to tell you
the reading. Don’t accept the “it’s a bit on the high side”
or it’s OK”. Get the numbers so you can compare them
yourself. Normal readings are listed on the machine.
Believe them.

Microsoft seems to have lost that spirit that accompanies
new and growing businesses. In the early years when they
were all young and vigorous and they were developing new and
different things there was a spirit around the place, a
togetherness.
Now Microsoft has grown so big and brought in management who
feels the dollars are more important than the people and the
spirit is gone. In most cases it is impossible to get it
back and I imagine Microsoft will suffer greatly from this
new affectation of dollars first, people second.
Often this kind of corporate infection arrives when
management decides it is doing enough for people just giving
them a job.
Too bad, for Microsoft is a big corporation. It will suffer
greatly from this mislead concept of dollars first.
