Do wormholes really exist?
In science fiction, such as on Star Trek, wormholes are
tunnels through space and time that permit rapid travel from
one part of the universe to another, distant part. They also
make time travel possible. These hypothetical tunnels are
based on Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, which
describes space-time as curved. So far, wormholes exist only
in the imagination. Some scientists think that microscopic
wormholes are a real possibility, but there is little
likelihood of wormholes big enough to allow a person or
spaceship to pass through.
Would a body decay in outer space?
The things that make human tissue decay on earth -- humidity
and microorganisms -- don't exist in space, so a body
floating around in space would not decay as it would here on
earth. More likely, it would become dried out and appear
mummified, much as some bodies buried in deserts have
remained intact. The body would be further protected by low
temperatures (unless it drifted too close to the sun).
However, we don't know the effect that high levels of
radiation would have on it.

Microsoft battles Word PC virus
Users are being warned to watch out for booby-trapped
documents Microsoft could release early a patch for a
loophole in its Word program that virus writers are already
exploiting.
If users get infected by the virus, attackers could open up
a backdoor on the PC and take over the machine to use it for
their own ends.
A fix is due for release in mid-June but Microsoft said it
would bring it forward if the action was "warranted".
Microsoft told users to turn off some Word features in order
to protect themselves.
Safe mode
Security firm Symantec said the virus, called
Backdoor.Ginwui, that exploits the bug in the word
processing software had been found in e-mails bearing a
Japanese Word document.
The document summarises a recent summit meeting between the
US and Asia. So far only people at one company are known to
have been caught out.
Those opening the booby-trapped Word document will fall
victim to the virus which opens up a backdoor on the PC. It
then reports back to a website in Asia, telling it the
computer has been compromised.
Microsoft is planning to release a fix for the flaw on its
next monthly patch date which falls on 13 June. But it said
on its security advisory blog that the patch may be released
sooner "if needed".
To help people protect themselves, Microsoft urged users not
to open or save Word files they receive from unknown sources
or even those that are from trusted sources but are
unexpected.
For extra protection, it said users should change an option
in the popular Outlook e-mail program that uses Word as the
editor for mail messages.
Other advice included not opening Word files that are inside
other programs such as Excel or PowerPoint. It also said
users should avoid downloading Word documents from websites.
Users should also run Word in so-called "safe" mode which
shuts down some features of the word-processing program and
stops the exploit code gaining hold of a machine.
The bug affects Microsoft Word 2002 and 2003 for Windows.

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem

Different types of scientists including pathologists,
virologists, and biologists are in charge of overseeing
this function. They then delegate some of their
responsibility to staff members who include technicians
and support staff. Scientists study these
micro-organisms all the time. Unfortunately the
micro-organisms also change their methods of operation
frequently and that makes their growth patterns
unpredictable. The hospital’s “Infection Control”
department is always on the lookout for changes.
Testing is the responsibility of a laboratory
department. They have the appropriate testing
equipment. There are several tools, but the most
common one is the auger (blood) plate. Some of the
suspected micro-organisms are placed on one of these
“plates” and allowed to grow in perfect conditions. The
laboratory technician, who is trained to recognize the
results, will “read” the plate and document the
outcome.
The term “nosocomial” means that this infection was
acquired during the hospital stay. And the reason the
term is important is that this infection may be more
difficult to treat and to overcome. And many nosocomial
infections involve viruses which can easily be spread
via the air. More about this later.
One very important aspect of this measurement is to
know that unless there are MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of
micro-organisms, you will not know they are present.
They are invisible to the naked eye. So what would you
measure if you couldn’t see anything? Based on previous
scientific research, it is assumed that they are
present. These testing methods will prove or disprove
their existence.

I see Microsoft is being exploited with yet another virus.
It is almost like the world's virus makers have it in for
them. Terrorists, of course, have banks and banks of
computer technicians whose job it is to write any kind of
virus they can to disrupt the world's computers. Microsoft,
being the software of choice, finds itself the brunt of the
worst these virus producers can create.
Too bad the world is full of people who think inflicting
harm on others is the best way to live. Their reward shall
come.
In the meantime I have been wondering if you folks would
like to set up a "talk" mail server. I have the capacity to
set up a list server to which folks can ask to be
subscribed. Once they were a member of the list they could
send mail to the server and all on the list would receive
their mail.
It seemed to me some of you might like to "talk" about the
