What is a close encounter of the second kind?

A close encounter of the second kind is finding physical
evidence of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). A close
encounter of the first kind is sighting UFOs. A close
encounter of the third kind is actual physical contact with
a UFO.

What country's police force carries paintballs to apprehend
criminals?

Japan. When a policeman in Tokyo chases a suspect, he's
supposed to splatter him with an indelible red paintball
that makes the suspect very visible under florescent light
for later apprehension. Paintballs have been standard issue
to officers for several years. Japanese police have another
interesting trick - an automatic motorcycle catcher.
Motorcycle gangs cause a lot of trouble for police in Japan.
The "Motorcycle Arresting Device" is a metallic box that
lies flat on the roadway and looks like a metal plate. The
police put them in the road, then try to get the offending
motorcycle to drive over it. When the motorcycle does, the
lid flips up, exposing an adhesive that sticks to the
motorcycle's rear tire. The adhesive is attached to a wire,
which is hooked to a rope that is drawn down into the axle,
snarling the wheel and gradually stopping the bike.
Departments without the automatic motorcycle catcher have to
content themselves with chasing cyclists into a roadblock
and dropping a net on them.

Tips And Tidbits

Search for Java quake survivors

A frantic search for survivors is continuing after a strong
earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java, killing
more than 4,500 people.

Many people are still believed trapped under rubble and
collapsed buildings, but rescue teams say the chances of
finding anyone alive are slim.

Relief efforts are picking up speed, with teams from across
the country and abroad arriving in the disaster zone.

The Indonesian Red Cross estimates some 200,000 people fled
their homes after it hit early on Saturday morning.

At least 4,500 are thought to have been killed and more than
10,000 injured when the quake, measuring 6.3, flattened
buildings south of the city of Yogyakarta.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey at the scene says the situation is
still desperate in the worst affected region around the city
of Yogyakarta - badly injured people are arriving at
hospitals already short of space and hundreds of victims are
having to be treated outdoors.

Field clinics are being set up to relieve the pressure on
hospitals.

The worst devastation was in the town of Bantul, south of
Yogyakarta city, where an official said more than 2,000
people had been killed.

There were also reports that one of the country's most
important ancient temple complexes was badly damaged by the
quake.

Initial surveys showed collapsed stone walls and statues
lying scattered around the site at the Hindu Prambanan
complex in Yogyakarta.

The temples are more than 1,000 years old and listed by the
UN as a world heritage site.

Aid appeal

The Red Cross launched an appeal for $10m (7.7m euros), as
world leaders pledged aid.

Unicef said it was sending emergency supplies including
2,000 tents, 9,000 tarpaulins and hygiene kits.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on
rescuers to work around the clock, as he visited the
stricken area with a team of Cabinet ministers on Saturday.

Yogyakarta is near the Mount Merapi volcano, which
threatened to erupt earlier this month, forcing thousands of
people to be evacuated.

Experts were divided over whether the quake would affect
Merapi, but there are reports of heightened activity at the
volcano.

According to our correspondent, the relief effort planned
for an imminent volcanic eruption has now been diverted to
deal with the earthquake.

She says this means authorities in the city are better
equipped to deal with the disaster than may have been
expected.

Officials said that although the area affected was coastal
there was no tsunami resulting from the quake.

The quake hit at 0554 local time (2253 GMT Friday), around
25km (15 miles) south of the city of Yogyakarta, the US
Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia's ancient royal capital and one of its
biggest cities, is about 440km (275 miles) south-east of the
capital, Jakarta.

Aid effort hampered

Yogyakarta's airport was closed after sustaining damage.
Indonesia's Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said it would
remain shut until at least Sunday while inspections were
carried out, AP reported.

AID PLEDGES SO FAR
UK - $5.5m
EU - $3.8m
US - $2.5m
Australia - $2.3m
China - $2m
Canada - $1.8m

The aid effort was also reportedly hampered as the quake cut
electricity and communications in some areas.

Indonesia is in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire",
which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

In December 2004, a huge earthquake off Indonesia's coast
killed hundreds of thousands of people across the Indian
Ocean by triggering a tsunami.

Two more earthquakes rocked the Pacific islands of Tonga and
Papua New Guinea on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries caused
by the tremors, which measured 6.7 and 6.2 respectively.

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 4 of 11

Studies show that the more people that are in the
hospital, the higher the bioburden is. Hospital air
bioburden changes very frequently, depending on the
tasks being performed. Doesn’t this then make sense
that in flu season, visitors are discouraged? Not only
do they bring with them flu viruses, but also increase
the bioburden of the facility simply because they are
there.

We already know that respiratory viruses such as
influenza are transmitted through airborne means.
Research is now showing that viruses from vomitus can
be spread the same way. Does this now help you to get
an inkling of the methods of spread in a care facility
during the flu season?
So it is very important to discard any vomit carefully
in order to stop more spread. If it happens in a care
facility, could this not also happen in your home?
Can you also see how “re-infection” can occur?  It is
also very well known that the bioburden from ten people
is a lot more than from one or two people. In
hospitals, as with other buildings, it is generally
recognized that most bacteria found in the air are
generated by the occupants and do not come from
outside. They can survive for considerable time in the
environment and can be easily distributed around
buildings by air currents.

Generally, you wouldn’t know if the bioburden
“contents” are negative or positive: healthy or
unhealthy. They just “are”. All it means is that
something is alive and most likely growing or expanding
in numbers. However, the term “bioburden” is normally
identified with the presence of harmful
micro-organisms, also called “pathogens”
(disease-causing).  These microbes strive for survival:
they are compelled to live. In order to stay alive,
active, and harmful, they have to live in a supportive
environment. This environment provides such things as
food, warmth, moisture, and darkness. (Some
micro-organisms can even survive without any oxygen.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as

Today's title article doesn't have anything to do with
computer Tips And Tidbits.

I placed the article because it seems to me, and this is
backed by fact, that the number of earthquakes around the
world is increasing. That is especially true of the Pacific
"Ring of Fire".

Indonesia is suffering a huge number of these quakes and
geological phenomena. Only last week there was a report on
the volcano developing in Mt. Merapi, Indonesia, which
happens to be only a couple hundred miles north of the
present earthquake. That means there could be even more
geological activity in the near future.

On the other hand it is possible the present quake relieved
some pressure on the volcano. That remains to be seen.

We live in a world of constant geological change. For
reasons unknown to us this activity appears to be on the
increase. That is just the way it is folks. Those who live
in earthquake prone areas will continue to suffer.

One thing we must always remember is that each quake begets
another. Relieving pressure in one spot only builds up
pressure in another.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Rack One's Brains: What is the reason a person who is
struggling to remember something is said to "rack his
brains"?

As used here, "rack" means "to stretch or strain by force" -
as a person is stretched on the "rack" or wheel and that is
a rather vivid metaphorical description of the process of
remembering.

The Privilege of Naming the Children

The privilege of naming all the children of the tribe always
fell to the chief.

One day a small Indian boy asked him how he chose the names
for all the children.

"Well, my son," the chief replied, "When I step out of my
tepee, I name each child after the first thing I see.

"For instance, when a child is born and I step out of my
tepee and see a pale moon rising, I say - you shall be
called, Pale-Moon-Rising."

"And when a child is born and I step out of my tepee and see
a hawk flying over, I say - you shall be called,
Hawk-Flying-Over."

"So why do you ask, Big-Dog Pooping?"
