TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Who was the first person to go over
Niagara Falls in a barrel (and survive)?

Is it true that Coca-Cola used to have cocaine in it?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Does Niagara Falls freeze over in the winter?

Yes and no. The thunderous volume of water over
the great falls never stops flowing completely.
However, the falling water and mist do create ice
formations along the banks of the falls and river,
producing ice mounds as thick as fifty feet. If it's
REALLY cold for a long time, the ice can even
stretch across the river and form an ice bridge
several miles long. Until 1912, tourists were actually
permitted to walk on the ice bridge. That stopped
when the ice bridge broke up that year and three
people died. Winter can also produce mini-icebergs
that flow down the Niagara River.

Has Niagara Falls ever gone dry?

Actually, the mighty Niagara Falls has run dry
several times. In March 1848, both the American falls
and the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side
slowed to a trickle when an ice jam formed on
Lake Erie, blocking the water that flows along the
Niagara River and over the falls. A few brave souls
explored the dry riverbed that day, finding all sorts of
interesting relics from the War of 1812: tomahawks,
old muskets, bayonets. Other (less brave) souls went
to special church services, fearful that the unusual
event was a terrible omen. Thirty hours after the falls
stopped, they started running again when warmer
weather dislodged the ice. In 1969, US authorities
actually turned the American falls off to make repairs.
The Americans diverted the river for seven months
while the US Army Corp of Engineers were at work.

Of all the words Dr. Suess made up in his storybooks, only
one has stuck in the English vocabulary: grinch, which
refers to a killjoy -- and it took more than 20 years.

Cornpone and Treewood
by Ken Darby

Cornpone Taggart and Hamstrung Treewood are a
couple country hicks. Cornpone, known as "Pone" or
"Old Pone" earns his living on the internet, and has
since he left what schooling he had. He's a lazy cuss,
and figured the internet was the way to earn the kind
of living he wanted. He thought it beat the backbreaking
sweat soaking work that was the kind you could
get in his town.

Hamstrung Treewood, didn't pay much attention to
computers in school and went out to work in the
backbreaking world in town. He had been without
work for a while and Pone was teaching him how to
set up a business on the internet.

The story continues.
----------------------------------------

"Pone, if'n yous jus' sits here an whittles, when does
yous git yer exercise?" asked Hamstrung Treewood.
He and Cornpone Taggart had been sitting under
Pone's favorite tree in the town common for about
an hour now, just talking.

"I's gits my exercise a' home Strung. I's does me
exercises ever day in the mornin' afore Ils starts my
day. How else does yous thinks I's starys so good
lookin', Strung?" answered and asked Pone.

"Yeah! Right! Good lookin'. Is that what yous think
yous is?" asked Strung, laughing.

"Its all part of the game Strung. If'n yous keeps yerself
well exercised an' well fed, then yous is agonna have
a better mental capacity. Then yous thinks straighter."
said Pone, "By the way is yous still buildin' yer list?"

"I's sure is Pone an' its aworkin' too. I's gittin some
sales near ever day, now. I's concentratin' on buildin'
the list an' sendin' out my newsletter, Pone an' the
formula seems ta be a workin' good" said Strung.

"Wha's yous adoin' ta git yer suscribers?" asked Pone.

"Well I's uses as many o' them co-op advertisin' outfits
as I's can find. Then, I's gots me a sign up form on my
web site, and then I's participates in a couple o' lists
thats wants ta talk 'bout health stuff. I's findin' tha' 'bout
ten percent o' my suscribers leaves ever month, so's
tha' gives me a pretty good build rate. I's went with tha
there autyresponder outfit yus suggested. The other
day theys figgerd a way ta dellete all them email
addresses what bounced. It cut my list down pretty
bad, but now I's gots me a list whats wants my
newsletter." said Strung.

"Yeah, I knows, theys done the same ta me. I's sure
never figgerd there was tha' many bouncers, but it's
good ta know the remainder is awantin' the newsletter.
Tha' now gives yous a quality list." said Pone.

"Well if'n I's can continue ta build an' it ends up all
the tire kickers is deleted thens I's gots me a list tha's
worth sumthin'. I's jus' agonna keep aworkin' jus' like
yous said." said Strung.

"Tha's good Strung. Now I's agotta go do some
chores fer the missus." said Pone.

(See yous nex' week folks.)

Word

Microsoft Word allows you to change the vertical as well as
the horizontal spacing of text.

To check out vertical text spacing, open a blank document
and type in a short sentence. Now, select one letter and
choose Format then Font. When the Font dialog box opens, click
the Character Spacing tab. Now click the arrow at the
right side of the "Position" list box and select Raised,
then click OK. The selected letter will now appear three
points above the line. Select another letter
and repeat the above procedure, but this time select
Lowered from the "Position" list box and click OK. This
moves the selected letter to three points below the text
line.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated ...
PART 7 of 13

For some high-risk patients, although they may not be
totally free from the flu illness, the vaccine can be effective
in preventing lower-respiratory-tract involvement or other
secondary complications, reducing the risk for hospitalization
and death. If your household has people at high risk
(including children) who either cannot be vaccinated or
may not respond adequately to vaccination (through their
physical limitations), they should get vaccinated. Again,
this vaccination may reduce the risk of exposure to
influenza for everyone. Our goal is to reduce the spread
and limit inconvenience or suffering. I tell my friends who
like me don't want this in our bodies, to eat a very strong
multivitamin. And lots of fruits and vegetables ... anything
that gives you large amounts of antioxidants. Those
chemicals of the flu vaccine will be creating antibodies, the
specific "flu army", and you want to have that, but those in
themselves also give you the free radicals which you don't
want. Just be aware of your choices and your reasons.
Let's suppose you have decided to make use of this
vaccination offer at work or school. Arrangements will
be made between your company and a nursing organization.
A registered nurse, like me, will come at a prearranged
time and bring all the supplies. The only two things you
are responsible for is to complete a consent form and
bring your body. And it would be greatly preferred is you
could wear a short, loose-fitting blouse or shirt. Otherwise
you will be asked to remove your arm from the shirt . . .a real
nuisance for women, especially.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

Slowly the group headed for the town common and
the fire. They entered the area on the side where they
usually sat, near to the top end of the circle where sat
the village elders, before getting to Eloise and Mazunta.

Eloise and Mazunta were the only ones with chairs,
privilege of rank.

Bob and Lynn Hunter sat on the ground like everyone
else and began to enjoy the warmth of the fire. This
was the usual spot for Mae, David and Pam, and while
there was no ranking within the village, their fair skin
made them stand out.

The drums were beating a steady cadence. Slowly
every person there was showing some kind of
movement in rhythm with the drums.

"How is it that Eloise and Mazunta have
chairs?" asked Bob.

"Mazunta is the head man for the village at this time.
He and his wife have that privilege. If he begins to act
in ways that are not for the good of the village, or to the
villager's dislike, he will be replaced. That process
happens very quickly. Until then he is the much revered
leader, and all respect his postion, as well as that of his
wife. Eloise, however, is so highly thought of by these
villagers they would put her on a pedestal anyway. She
has done wonderful things for them and each person
loves her deeply. She has looked after many here and
is very kind and loving herself." answered David.

"Her parents seem to be like that, too." observed Bob.

"Yes, Bob, they are. They, too, are much loved by the
folks at this village. They have been here often and
spend much time here." said David, "There are Mazunta's
folks, sitting right over there." he pointed.

"OOOh! My bones are sore. I haven't done so much
sitting like this since I was a kid." said Lynn.

"Lynn," said David with calm, loving authority, "stand,
and then turn around before you again sit. All the aches
and pains will leave and you will be more flexible."

Lynn looked at him as if he was nuts. What good would
that do, anyway? Yet David's eyes remained steady
and commanding.

Lynn stood. Then she turned around as David had
commanded. Upon sitting again she had no more aches
or pains and she could bend her knees, arms, ankles
and other joints better.

"That's better. How did you know that?" she asked.

David did not reply. He had only caused her to believe
that would happen and according to her belief, it did.

"It will work for you, too, Bob. You must be equally sore,
here and there. You haven't been used to sitting like
this, either." said David.

Bob Hunter rose, turned around and sat down. Just like
his wife, he felt much better. He could hardly believe it.
That felt so much better, he inquired, "How come that
causes one to feel better?"

"Because you believe it, Bob. Nothing more. Nothing
less." answered David.

The fire was giving off a warmth that caused them to
move back. Soon all the village was present.

Mazunta rose and held up his hands. "It is with much
pleasure that we welcome the parents of our beloved
Pam, to our fire this night. She has wanted you to visit
for a long time and we are all happy to see you here.
May your visit be a warm, happy and memorable one."

The villagers all rose, clapped and cheered. Many came
over to welcome the Hunters personally.

The Hunters were surprised and taken back by the forward
friendliness. They had never been amongst any group
where this occurred. It was not long before they really felt
right at home.

The drums began to increase their tempo. The dancing
began. Food and beverages were passed around and
the evening became what Bob and Lynn Hunter will
remember for a very long time.

There is something about making a person feel genuinely
welcome. They like to feel that. They like to think they are
welcome although many will question it. It is only in the
continued application of that friendliness and that love
that all inhibitions can be overcome.

By the end of the night the Hunter's, each, had no doubt
they were welcome in this village. The villagers had cast
their spell.

HA! HA! HA!

A rabbi, a minister, and a priest were playing poker when the
police raided the game. Turning to the priest, the lead police
officer said, "Father Murphy, were you gambling?"

Turning his eyes to heaven, the priest whispered, "Lord,
forgive me for what I am about to do." To the police officer,
he then said, "No, officer; I was not gambling."

The officer then asked the minister, "Pastor Johnson, were you
gambling?"

Again, after an appeal to heaven, the minister replied, "No,
officer; I was not gambling."

Turning to the rabbi, the officer again asked, "Rabbi
Goldstein, were you gambling?"

Shrugging his shoulders, the rabbi replied, "With whom?"
