ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Who was the first person to go over
Niagara Falls in a barrel (and survive)?

Annie Taylor, a 63-year-old schoolteacher, was the
first daredevil to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
(She claimed to be 43 at the time, but genealogical
records say she was older). On emerging from her
barrel after plunging over Niagara Falls, Annie said,
"No one ought ever do that again."

Is it true that Coca-Cola used to have cocaine in it?

Sort of. The original recipe for the drink that became
Coca-Cola contained coca leaves, the plant that
produces cocaine. Even today, a few coca leaves are
added for flavoring, but there's no cocaine. Coca-Cola
was invented in 1886 by a pharmacist who was also
a morphine addict. John Styth Pemberton developed
the drink as a medicine against headache, impotency,
and nervous disorders. The original cola contained wine
in addition to a fair amount of coca leaves. In Pemberton's
day, cocaine was not thought to be harmful. Even doctors
(such as Sigmund Freud) touted its virtues. At first,
Coca-Cola was more like a syrup than a thirst-quenching
drink. But some guys at a soda fountain had the idea
of diluting Pemberton's drink with a little carbonated
water. Coca-Cola as we know it was born!

It Is None Of Their Business!
by Ken Darby

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He
argued "What's a kid going to learn from
someone who decided his best option in life was to become a
teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they say
about teachers: "Those who can do. Those who
can't teach."

To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher,
Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied, "You
want to know what I make?"

"I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I can
make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of
Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not
do his or her very best."

"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute
silence."

"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them criticize."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them write."

"I make them read, read, read."

"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, and
definitely beautiful over and over and over
again, until they will never misspell either one of those words
again."

"I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on their
final drafts in English."

"I elevate them to experience music and art and the joy in
performance, so their lives are rich, full of kindness
and culture, and they take pride in themselves and their
accomplishments."

"I make them understand that if you have the brains, then follow
your heart... and if someone ever tries to judge
you by what you make, you pay them no attention."

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make a difference."

"What about you?"

There are too few people who stand up for who they are
and what they are doing, and too many like the businessman
who think they have all the answers in God's world.

Most folks have been trained so well to move when they hear
bells, it is hard to get them to see the truth that some things
are just not other peoples business.

When the phone rings, you answer it. When the doorbell
rings, you answer it. All of that may be okay, but the part of
that habit that gets most people is that they were taught when
they were young that if a person asks you a question, you
answer it.

Pavlov showed clearly the habit structure that can be
programmed into all living creatures, men among them.

Too many folks do not stop to think, when asked a question,
"Is this any of his/her business?"

I can remember being in an office one day when the secretary
came in late. One of the more aggressive salesmen in the
office immediately began to infer it was because of her sex
life the evening before. He then came straight out and
asked her, to which she gave an honest and complete reply.

I went up to her later and discussed with her the idea that
some things are just not other people's business.

Like all folks when they first hear the concept, she felt that
if she didn't answer that would be like lying. She had been
taught as a young child that you answer those who ask
you a question.

I reminded her that "It's none of your business." is an answer.

I know it is hard to start with. I, too, had to learn that lesson.
One has to get over the idea that when you do not answer
the question the way the person wants, is somehow like a
lie. The simple truth is that some things are just not their
business and you are under no compulsion to answer,
except by that childhood training.

When a child you do the things of a child. When an adult
you now do the things of an adult.

It Is None Of Their Business!

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------

Modems

The next few
tips explain the modulate-demodulating world of the modem in
simple terms.
Modem is actually an acronym for "Modulate-Demodulate."
See the MODEM in there? Now you know. A modem changes
digital signals (ones and zeros) into sound waves, and back to
digital again.

A modem's main purpose is to connect one computer to
another computer using a telephone line.

Your e-mail travels at the speed of your modem between
your computer and your mail server. "Your mail server" actually
refers to the computer that's hosting your e-mail account.

Your computer has to dial another computer's phone number
before you can do anything on the Net. If you get a busy
signal, this means all the modems in the modem pool are being
used.

ISP's have to install rooms full of
modems. These are called modem pools, or modem banks.

Cable modems are great because they free up your
phone, are always on, and are super fast. Cable modems
use the same cable that a cable
TV set uses.
A cable modem is housed in a plastic container, plugged into
a power outlet.
A cable modem requires the addition of a Network Interface
Card (NIC) to your computer. Another wire runs from the NIC
to the cable modem.

When you use cable, the Net is always on.
Cable modems are much faster than dial-up connections.
Even when a cable modem is running slowly, it's still a lot
faster than a dial up connection.
If you have cable TV also, the modem won't tie up the TV.
You can watch TV and surf the web at the same time, using
the very same cable.
The cost of cable isn't that much. A typical TV and Internet
subscription costs around $40.00 per month. If you compare it
to a dial up connection, plus an extra phone line, etc., you're
actually ahead using the cable modem.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated ...
PART 8 of 13

These "mobile clinics" are meant for people who are
healthy: not people with health problems or those
considered "high risk". Those individuals PLUS their
extended families should go to their family physician.
(This routine differs a little from country to country . . . and
the requirements change from year to year.) If you suspect
you are pregnant or are in the early phases of pregnancy,
discuss this with your doctor. Remember the first trimester
of the pregnancy is the crucial one for the fetus development.
(If you are breast-feeding. Again discuss this with your
family physician, but it should be OK.) If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact your doctor. They
know you best and know all the other health challenges
as well. I am trying to create awareness and get you to
think seriously about something you may not be completely
aware of. Who should NOT get vaccinated? Anyone who
is very allergic to eggs or eggs products. This vaccine is
made with the fluids of chicken embryos that have been
infected with the current year's virus. And a preservative,
Thimerosal, usually found in contact lens solution, is
added. So if you are allergic to this solution, then you
shouldn't take the vaccine. Also some products may contain
formaldehyde as a preservative. These would be specific
questions asked at the time of vaccination. Another
possible reason not to be vaccinated will be an allergy
to Neomycin. Neomycin is used to reduce the likelihood
of bacterial contamination, which is always a possibility.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Pam, I did not say anything before, but I don't think
I can sleep on that bed." said her Mother as they were
walking home after the evening fire.

"Oh yes you will Mother, you too, Dad. That bed will
surprise you and I think you are about to have the
best sleep of your life." answered Pam.

Lynn was about to go on and argue. Sleeping on an
uneven, uncovered surface was clearly not going to
be like sleeping on her spring filled, sponge covered
mattress at home. She had shopped a long time until
she found just the right combinations for sleeping on
and she clearly knew she had the best for her. She
was not going to have her young daughter tell her
otherwise.

Yet the evening had been such a wonderful time,
she did not want to upset the reverie by having this
conversation. She could stand it one night, she
told herself.

Pam and David walked them to the guest hut. David
went in and there was soft light everywhere. Doing
his thing by higher law he arranged for the bed to
hold its occupants as if they were completely supported,
on a cloud. He caused the ambience to take away
any cares of those present and to produce peace
within their hearts.

"When you want the light out, so you can sleep, all
you need say it 'light be gone' and it will slowly fade
away." David told them.

This was all new stuff to the Hunters. But everything
else that had happened today was, too. They did not
argue the point. They accepted it, said their thank you's
and good night's and prepared for bed. David had
arranged for a cover to be at the foot of the bed, so
they would be covered.

"When the last of you gets out of bed, the cover will
disappear. Don't worry about that, I caused it to be
that way. Good night, and have a good sleep." David
and Pam were on their way home to their place.

Bob and Lynn Hunter looked at one another, then
broke out laughing. That this bed would be comfortable
was such a preposterous thought to them it was funny.

"Well, we're here. We might as well try it out. We can
go home tomorrow if this doesn't work out. But
everything else has been so terrific, I really enjoyed
myself today!" said Bob.

"Yes, honey. I did too. Do you think Pam is happy
here?" asked Lynn.

"Yes, I do. And I think she is in good company and
well looked after. I think the people of this village would
help her out completely if she needed anything. It seems
that is the way they are. Well, are you ready?" said Bob
as he climbed onto the bed structure.

It was hard and unyielding, until he lay down. The instant
he was fully horizontal the bed turned into the most
comfortable place he had ever been.

"Lynn. You won't believe this bed. It is just like the kids
said. Come lie down, it's wonderful."

They both lay down, caused the light to leave and entered
upon the most terrific sleep either of them have ever
had since childhood.

It was near noon the next day before anyone saw Bob
and Lynn. They emerged from their hut looking
completely refreshed and ready for the day. They
walked over to Pam and David's.

"Oh, there you are. We were just about to send out a
search party. How did you sleep?" asked Pam as
her folks came walking up.

"Pam, that was the most wonderful sleep I have ever
had. I couldn't believe it. Wow, was that ever
nice." said Lynn.

"I guess we better stop doubting you, Pam. I felt like
I was sleeping on a cloud. Gee, did I ever sleep good.
What's cooking? Where is David?" asked her Dad.

"I'm cooking lunch and David is down at the
river." she answered.

"Good, I think I'll go join him. Lunch ready soon?" asked
Bob as he began to leave.

"You go ahead, I'll call David when lunch is
ready." said Pam.
