What are bull and bear markets?
A bear market is one where stock prices are dropping.
(Some experts say you officially have a bear market
when stocks drop twenty percent from the peak.) A bull
market is a market where stocks are rising. A good way
to remember which is which is to think of the relative
speed of the animals. Bears are cautious animals who
generally don't move too fast. In a bear market, wise
investors should act the same. A bull boldly charges
ahead. In a bull market, that's not such a terrible idea.
(Another way to remember: think of the bull's horns,
tossing his prey upward.) How in the world did we get
these names? According to Lynette Padwa's excellent
book, Everything You Pretend to Know and Are Afraid
Someone Will Ask, the terms have a frontier history.
Padwa reports that bearskin jobbers were notorious
for selling the animals' skins before the bears had
actually been trapped. In the stock market, a person
who sold shares in a stock he didn't own came to be
known as a bear. A bear would look for stocks he thought
might drop in price, and buy them when they went down.
BEFORE actually buying them, though, he'd arrange to
sell shares of the stock at a certain, higher, price. The
plan only worked if the stock's price kept dropping. Thus
a bear market became a market where prices were falling.
The bull market, says Padwa, most likely got its name
simply as the opposite of bear. Bulls and bears were
both used in the frontier sports of bull and bear baiting
and therefore were linked in most people's minds.
Why did an extra pin get added to the game of bowling?
It's true. People used to bowl at "nine-pins" rather than
"ten-pins." According to bowling historians, the practice
of using ten pins in the game of bowling actually originated
in colonial America as a means of getting around a
gaming law that forbade "bowling at nine-pins." The
colonial authorities tried to quash the sport because too
many colonists were gambling on it. To avoid punishment
for disobeying the law, bowlers decided to add an extra
pin and call it...ten-pins. ("Hey, there's no crime here,
officer. As you can clearly see, we are NOT bowling
at nine-pins.")

"Often the difference between the successful
man or woman and a failure is not one's abilities
or ideas, but the courage one has to take a risk and
to act on those abilities and ideas." Those wise
words from Maxwell Maltz remind us that success in
life is likely to involve some intelligent risk.
Those closest to you are not always supportive
when you want to take a risk, are they? Sometimes
this is because they are unwilling to take risks
themselves. Sometimes it is because it threatens
what they define as security. No doubt there are
other reasons, however, will you let that stop you
if you know that this is the best thing for you to be
doing next?
The key to risk is make it "intelligent". That intelligence
requires the mind, the heart and the gut operating
simultaneously If the heart and gut say no, it will
be clearly very difficult to bring passion to anything,
no matter how mundane. If only the mind is interested
in the project, it may never get off the ground.
Things considered "calculated" risks, are easier.
Think of the times you have not taken a risk--times
when you talked yourself out of doing something
only to regret it later. What can you learn from these
times? What held you back? Was it lack of self-confidence,
funds, time, or some other commodity? Was it fear of
failure? Where would you be now if you had
chosen to proceed?
Risk it.intelligently!

To Be Vaccinated Or

This could develop 2 to 24 hours after your flu shot and
should be reported to a doctor right away. Also, any
prolonged or unusual reaction to the flu vaccine needs
to be reported to your doctor. The World Health Organization
asks for reports on any adverse reactions and publishes
them the following year. Consent: ASK QUESTIONS IF
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID or
what the words mean! Your life could depend on it! Any
health care professional will assume that all adults will
understand what is being done unless they ask for clarification.
Put your ego aside and ask the nurse what you need to
know. We always want you to remain in the clinic area to
be observed by the nurse for 20 minutes after you receive
the vaccine so that you can be observed, in the case of an
anaphylactic reaction. This is a serious medical emergency
and must be treated immediately. Your consent form, most
likely, it will also include a waiver for liability. The most
frequent adverse or side effect of the vaccine is soreness
at the site lasting approximately 2 days. Two types of
systemic reaction may occur: 1. Fever, feeling unwell and
sore muscles occur infrequently and usually occur in
persons who have not had exposure to the influenza
virus antigens in the vaccine (i.e. young children).

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The group casually walked down to the river's edge
talking and laughing all the way.
As this was no ceremonial event, and because the
regular canoes were lighter than the ones David
had carved, they chose to take the regular canoes.
Eloise, Mazunta, Boolanga,Karmuz and their family,
along with Mae Wiley whom they had also invited, all
went in one canoe with Boolanga and Mazunta doing
the paddling.
Pam, the kids, Bob and Lynn Hunter and Boolong,
along with David, rode in the second canoe with
Boolong and David doing the paddling.
With the rainy season and the subsequent flooding,
the current was not near so strong as when the river
lived well within its banks. So the paddling was
somewhat easy. They had decided to go upstream
so all the heavy work would be done when they arrived
at the picnic spot. The return trip would be much
simpler and easier.
David took the side closest to the river bank, mostly so
Bob Hunter could get all the photographs he could.
Bob, for his part, took full advantage of the chance and
scarcely ever stopped shooting pictures.
The banks and the trees were full of a hundred varieties
of birds and animals. The noise was non-stop and there
was the constant movement as they flew from one spot
to another and as the animals moved from one spot to
another.
Occasionally they saw a crocodile, but they offered no
threat. Once they saw a huge snake swimming across
the river. It must have been fifteen feet long.
David had issued the regular warning, not to put your
hands or feet in the water. Upon querying why and being
told the piranhas would have them for lunch, was all Bob
and Lynn needed to ensure they kept themselves within
the canoe.
From time to time they would see a tapir or a cat come
down to the waters edge for a drink. Sometimes they
would see a deer or antelope or a warthog.
The trip up stream was uneventful other than seeing the
creatures of nature in their natural habitat. The day was
another hot one, but clouds were building again and may
produce rain before the day was out.
It took nearly three hours of strong paddling before they
arrived at a nice clearing made up almost entirely of sand.
The clearing stretched back from the river for quite some
distance and there were places where the jungle offered
shade, which made the clearing a nice spot to picnic.
They pulled in and got out of the canoes. David pulled
the canoe up firmly on land and went up into the clearing
first. It was a good thing because there was a nest of
crocodiles lying in the sun, absorbing the heat. It was
clear there was not enough room in the clearing for both
groups, so David began to walk toward the crocs, knowing
they would move as he approached. He was broadcasting
love, so the animals knew there was no threat. The
animals began to stir.
Bob and Lynn stood there and watched, with their hearts
in they mouthes. They were desperately afraid and wanted
to shout to David. Yet the speech just past reminded them
of Davids ability and they decided to shut up.
David moved around behind the animals and they began
to move toward the water. Mazinta and Boolanga had
moved between the group of people and the group of
crocodile so the animals had a clear path to the water. When
the last one was in the water, the group then felt free to
enjoy the picnic area.
"That was a terribly brave, or silly, thing to do,
David." said Bob.
"Oh, come on Bob. There was never any danger either
to me or to them. They had been here for most of the day
anyway and would have soon been on their way looking
for lunch. I just suggested to them now was the
time." said David.
"Well, I certainly would not have done that." said Bob.
"Bob, this land, like all lands, functions according to a
rhythm. When you understand the rhythm then life gets
easier. I knew they would not be here long anyway. They
were just so lazy and lethargic they didn't want to move on
their own. All I did was create a situation where it was easier
for them to move than for them to remain vigilant against me.
They didn't argue because it was in their interest to leave,
which they were going to do anyway."

REPORT FOR: November 12/03 - DAY 313
Today I took it easy. What with the day I had yesterday, I
thought and reminded myself that being centered is more
important than the "push" I was on. I would get further by
slowing down and letting things happen rather than forcing
them to happen. Things are much more pleasant this way. I
will tackle things again tomorrow and with a rested mind
and heart.
I didn't tell you I took in a pretty incredible Avena meeting
last Saturday. I am wholly amazed at how simple good
health can be when one follows Avena's basic philosophy,
namely "Cleanse the body, then feed it" It seems most of
man's diseases, today, are a function of impacted bowel.
Cleaning that, alone, restores much better health.
I know some of you know that. But many don't, so bear
with me.
