How long has Kwanza been celebrated?

Kwanza wasn't celebrated until 1966, when it was started
by Maulana Karenga, a California professor.

What is the meaning of the word "Kwanza"?

"Kwanza" (also spelled "Kwanzaa") means "first fruits of the
harvest" in Swahili, an African language.

Around The Net

Here's an interesting tidbit from eMarketerDaily

The Internet Isn't Everywhere
Has anyone in the world not heard of the Internet?
Yes. According to a survey from Alpha Research,
77% of all Bulgarians have never been online, and
23% have no idea what the word "Internet" even
means. Reuters reports that just 4% of Bulgarian
companies use the Internet daily and Bulgarian
schools average only one computer for every 200
students. It is estimated that only 20% of the
people in Eastern Europe use the Internet regularly,
compared with over 50% in Western Europe.

And here's another...

Businesses Not Yet Counting on E-Pay

November 01, 2004

The Association of Financial Professionals (AFP)
surveyed 304 of its members and 51 prospective
members during June 2004 to gauge the industry's
movement towards electronic payments.

Currently, 75% of B2B payments made by respondents
are with paper checks, but there are signs that this may
change over the next few years. The AFP finds that
50% of respondents say it is "somewhat likely" that
they will switch to electronic payments in the next three
years, while 28% see such a change as "very likely."
The AFP previously surveyed member businesses
about their interest in electronic payments in 2000,
and found that only 9% felt there was a strong possibility
that that they would adopt electronic payments instead
of paper checks in the next three years.

One barrier frequently cited by businesses regarding
the adoption of e-payments has been the difficulty of
integrating an existing e-payment system with an
accounting department. The AFP finds that in 2004,
45% of the organizations surveyed have integrated
e-payments into their accounting systems, an increase
from 2000, when only about one-third had done so.
Most companies point to achieving more efficient
posting reconciliation and reducing costs as reasons
for integration.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated…
PART 1 of 13

Very shortly now, if it hasn't already happened, you will be
confronted with the flu vaccination choice ... do you get a shot
this year? Or will you not? It's quite the dilemma. I thought
I would share some thoughts and some of the less familiar
details: questions we get asked routinely in a clinic. I travel
to and set up my supplies in car dealerships, large corporate
office buildings, tiny one or two employee work places,
school lunchrooms, pharmacies, large department stores,
box warehouses, etc. I give vaccinations to people who
work in these places and those who shop there. I am
prepared to travel anywhere, so I get to see some very
interesting out of the way places! The flu virus can make
many, many people very ill. And it has the potential of
creating epidemics. It's easy way to pass this from one
person to another (mode of transmission). If you breathe,
you take a chance of breathing in a flu virus. Just think
about your own environment or picture an office of several
people. Someone coughs and doesn't know they have
the flu because they have no symptoms yet. (The virus
is just growing (incubating) into a number that will
eventually cause the person to have symptoms.) So this
person coughs and the virus is part of the moisture that
is sent out by the force of the cough. These particles
land on something ... a desk, a counter, a bag. Or if you
unfortunate enough to be passing close to the person,
they can land on you or be part of the air you are
breathing in at that moment. As you inhale, the virus
floats into your respiratory system.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

Hemno thought quite some time about that, then
the lights went on. He took his knife and placed
the handle in the slot. Next he took the leather
thong and placed one end in the vertical groove
and from the top end began to wind the leather
thong around the shaft, laying the leather in the
shallow grooves. He wound it as tight as he could.
At the bottom he wound the leather through and
under the leather from his last row then he pulled
it tight. He did this three more times until he no
longer had any leather to do it with.

Grabbing the knife by the blade, gently, he
tried to move the knife. He could not. It was held
fast in the slot. Standing up he took his staff,
now with the knife lashed securely into the top,
and he threw it for a couple practice throws. It
had good balance and his throws were reasonably
accurate.

Hemno was pleased with himself. He sat and
thought about who he was and what had happened
last night. Again his manhood became too large to
be contained within his loin cloth. Taking it out
he masturbated. This was a first. He liked it so
much he knew he would be doing that again.

Now he started walking. He was thinking as he
walked, about how he would stalk and kill his
first animal. He knew. He would hide in the
grasses and when an antelope came close he could
throw his spear and kill it. But first his mind
went once more to his manhood. He promptly sat and
did the same as he had earlier. He really like
this.

The day was passing and he had not yet seen a
proper place from which to hunt. The truth be known
he really wasn't thinking about it. He was
pre-occupied with his own body. Three or four
times that day he brought relief to himself. He
was beginning to think he would spend the rest of
his life doing this. But then there was that dream
last night. He knew he wanted a woman, yet there
were none within miles of here.

At the end of the day he had wasted his time
with this thinking. He had no more to eat or drink
and was beginning to feel the effects of no food.
He was confused. What was this thing with his
body. He enjoyed it very much but what was it all
about?

Not having found food he grabbed what he could
eat from nearby trees. He had moisture the same
way he found a drink yesterday. All this made him
feel better but did not wholly energize him. He
knew he must find food tomorrow. He again built a
fire and again took solace in the sunset and the
night sky.

Again that night he had another dream. This
time his partner was not Sonora but Kenyata. This
was wrong and he knew it yet how could he help it?

It did not dawn on him that as a boy changed
into a man his dreams were always about the only
women he knew, those that were close to him. It
happens to every boy in the world.

Hemno would have to learn to experience these
feelings with someone other than family members.
This he knew. He was ashamed of these thoughts and
feelings, yet they felt so good.

The following morning he was not so beset by
his sexual drive. He was hungry and well knew he
had to kill an animal today. He sought out what he
thought was a perfect site. It was reasonably
close to grazing animals so he hid himself in some
tall grass and waited.

The wait was a long one. It was nearly high
noon before an animal came within his range. He
rose slowly and threw his spear. It caught the
animal. But it was not in a leg to slow the animal
down, it was lodged in its back and looked like it
was held by the skin only. From a hunter's point
of view this was the worst possible scenario. The
animal now had his spear, including his knife and
was on the run. It bucked and twisted and turned
trying to get rid of this painful thing in its
back.

It had run a good distance from Hemno and it
was all he could do to keep up. Just as the animal
was tiring and he was getting closer a leopard
leaped from the grasses and attacked the animal.
In seconds it was over. The leopard now grabbed
the animal by the neck and started to drag it
away.

As was the way with leopards it dragged the
animal for nearly two miles until it found a tree
it could climb. Climbing the tree was a long and
arduous task when you held an antelope in your
teeth and the antelope had this long waving thing
in it's back. The leopard made it. Once he had the
beast in the tree it began to eat.

Hemno watched. Even his mouth was watering
over the food the leopard was eating. He could do
nothing. The leopard had the meat and was enjoying
it away from any danger. After about an hour the
leopard was sated. It lay down in the tree and
slept. Hemno could do nothing, but he had to get
his spear and knife back.

His mind was racing. Without his spear and
knife he would be hard pressed to survive in this
land. He had to have them.

HA! HA! HA!

A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said, "Hey,
I haven't seen you in a while. What happened, you look
terrible!"

"What do you mean? I'm fine."

"What about that wooden leg? You didn't have that before."

"Well," said the pirate, "we were in a battle at sea and
a cannon ball hit my leg but the doc fixed me up, and
I’m fine, really."

"Oh yeah? Well what about that hook? The last time I
saw you, you had both hands."

"We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy
ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but
the doc fixed me up with the hook, and I feel great, really."

"Oh," said the bartender, "what about that eye patch?
The last time you were in here you had both eyes."

"One day when we were at sea some birds were flying
over the ship. I looked up and one of them crapped in
my eye."

"You’re kidding," said the bartender, "you couldn't
have lost an eye just from some bird crap!"

"Well, I really wasn't used to the hook yet."
