TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is the New Year's Eve ball made of?

Who owns the New Year's Eve ball?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Where did the phrase "cute as a button" originate?

No one seems to know! Buttons sure aren't that cute,
but they sure are TINY and anything tiny is often
considered cute, so that MIGHT be it.

When was the New Year's Eve ball first dropped in
Times Square?

Each New Year's Eve, thousands of people descend into
New York's Times Square to watch the giant ball dropped
from the top of One Times Square at the stroke of midnight.
It's a tradition dating back to December 31, 1907! Only twice,
in 1942 and 1943, was the ball lowering suspended (due
to wartime). The celebration in Times Square dates back
even further, to December 31, 1904, when the rooftop
celebration took the form of a fireworks display.

Tips And Tidbits

Here is an interesting little tidbit from eMarketerDaily...

Newsies Take to The Net - November 05, 2004

Loyal newspaper readers in the US are increasingly turning
to the Internet for news, shopping research and information.

Yesterday, Yahoo! released the results of its "Newspaper
Loyalist" study, which indicates that 72% of people who
regularly read the newspaper go online daily, and 50%
go online each day specifically for timely news and
information.

Faulkner Focus conducted an ethnographic study of 22
adults, ages 18 to 49, in New York and San Francisco who
read the newspaper at least three times per week. Deemed
"newspaper loyalists," these people were interviewed while
reading their newspaper and accessing the Internet at home,
in the park or during their commute to work. The qualitative
findings were then elaborated on and quantified with
research from Ipsos-Insight based on an online panel of
1,182 participants from six major cities in the US.

While newspaper loyalists are avid Net users, only
42% read a daily newspaper. Yahoo! notes that with the
choice and personalization of media today, the consumer
is in total control. One person who participated in the study
noted, "I kind of like holding the paper, and I like reading
the paper. But I definitely use the Internet for more
in-depth things."

Yahoo! found that the relationship between print and online
for newspaper loyalists is something online retailers and
marketers will want to note. Over one-half of newspaper
loyalists say they go online to research a product
mentioned in a newspaper circular. In fact, over 50% say
they have been conducting shopping research online and
buying offline for the past three years.

Addressing the idea of simultaneous media usage,
BIGresearch recently reportied that over 63% of US
consumers simultaneously watch TV while they are online,
and nearly 60% listen to the radio while they are online.

To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated…
PART 4 of 13

Jointly, the World Health Organization and individual
countries determine the viruses that will be targeted for
immunization. A common misconception is that you will
have immunity immediately. That isn't the case. Your body
has to develop this, and it takes time. Usually within
two weeks after vaccination, the body’s immune system
produces antibodies against antigens of the virus strains,
which make up the vaccine. Immunity does not occur
prior to that time. The antibodies (defense army) provide
protection against the flu caused by strains similar to
those in the vaccine or the related variants that may
emerge during outbreak periods. However, it will not
give you any support if you are exposed to a strain that
is not one of these in the vaccine. I recall one "flu season"
where people complained to having had a flu shot and
still getting the flu. The vaccine does not contain a live
virus that could be infectious, therefore, "it cannot cause
the flu." If you are ill afterwards it will be the result of
coincidental illnesses or because you were already
incubating a virus. Research is showing that the
vaccination may also stimulate the production of
T-lymphocytes, which help you recover more quickly,
if you are exposed to the infection before your full
immunity is in place. I have been involved with the
"flu season" for several years now. And the arguments
on both sides of the issues seem valid. If you don't get
immunized and your health is not in good shape, you
could get the flu and be off for several weeks…

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Hemno wasn't too sure he liked this ritual of
sending young men out into the wild to fend for
themselves. He cried a lot this night, wishing he
were back at home where he would have attention
and people would be looking after him. He knew, of
course, that Sonora would have healed this
correctly and permanently in the flash of an eye.
And there would be no more pain.

Yet he was here. Like it or not there was no
one around for miles and he had no choice but to
look after himself.

By the time the night was over he had cried
himself out. He had also come to the resolve that
he knew he alone would have to learn to look after
himself. Taking a deep breath, he stood as best he
could. That leg brought tears to his eyes every
time he hit it or moved it. This time, however,
those tears were no longer based on emotion. He
wasn't feeling sorry for himself any longer. The
tears would well up in his eyes purely from pain.

Hemno tried out his new crutch. It was just a
little too long. He sat down and for the next hour
carved away the excess he thought appropriate.

Standing once more he found he was able to
"walk" much better than last night. Holding his
crutch in one hand and his staff in the other he
was able to hobble along at a reasonable pace.

He decided that even before he put a splint
on his leg he had to concentrate on getting food.
He had been eating berries and the like but he was
in sad need of meat.

Within a couple hours he found a siight in the
tall grasses where he knew game would come by. He
was already close to a herd of gazelle that were
intent on grazing. He well knew that if he slipped
into the grasses where he was unseen, they would
soon forget he was there and one or two would
wander close enough. He positioned himself in a
way where he could get up fairly quickly and
without much noise. Then he waited.

Hemno waited and rested for three hours. In
that time he saw several animals come close, but
were not quite the right time or condition. Then
an animal came in closer. It must have been one
from the far side of the herd when he arrived. It
came in without fear. The herd well knew there
were no lions around.

Quietly he moved to a point where he could
stand in a hurry. He already had his spear in his
throwing hand. He knew to the very depths of his
being he had to make this throw correctly.

Almost as if in slow motion he rose. Then it
happened. It seemed as if he were in a dream.
Everything was perfect. For a short while he felt
no pain. He threw, and he was deadly accurate. He
threw so hard his spear entered the rear leg with
such force it went right through the leg, out the
other side and into the rear leg on the other side
of the animal.

The gazelle leaped and then fell to the ground
where the spear dug in. It kicked and did it's
best to get up but both hind legs were acting as
one, being joined by the spear. It thrashed around
on the ground with a furry that was hard to
believe. But that was doing no good and the animal
was tiring.

Hemno was well able to hobble up to the
animal. As it thrashed on the ground it was doing
so with less and less mobility. Hemno hobbled
around to the rear of the animals head, knife in
hand and in one motion fell on it and cut it's
throat. The animal no longer moved.

Hemno was also worn out. The "magic" was now
gone and his leg was throbbing. But he had to
carry on. All he needed was one hind leg. That
would be enough meat to hold him for at least a
week.

The rest of the animal would be left for
vultures, hyenas and others. It would be
completely gone by days end. That was the way of
life on the African plains. Mother Nature set
things up so nothing goes to waste. Every part of
the animal would go to some good, feeding the food
chain in it's order.

It was all Hemno could do to drag the leg of
the gazelle. He hurt every step of the way. He
would hobble a step then drag the leg, hobble a
step, then drag the leg. It was supper time before
he got back to camp. He was beat.

He rested for nearly an hour, then he hobbled
over to get some wood from around the tree from
which he had taken his crutch. Returning to his
camp he lit a fire. Then he went to the leg. He
cut off the dirt and then sliced a fairly large
piece of meat. He placed it on a sharpened stick
that he had brought from his wood hunting trip. He
placed the meat on the stick, firmly so it would
not fall off. Then he place the stick in the
ground solidly. Leaning the stick toward the fire
he found a rock to place under it so the meat hung
over the fire without the stick catching on fire.

TODAY'S REPORT:

I realize you are reading this on Monday, but I put it together
yesterday, Sunday. That is our anniversary so I spent time with
Mom and the family. We went to a grandson's hockey game
and did the grandparent thing where we bought a dozen
"special" donuts for about twice the usual price, a fund
raising project.

All in all we had a wonderful day. I wish the same to all of you.

HA! HA! HA!

A guy in a taxi wanted to speak to the driver so he leaned
forward and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver
screamed, jumped up in the air and yanked the wheel
over. The car jumped the curb, demolished a lamppost
and came to a stop inches from a shop window.

The startled passenger said, "I didn't mean to frighten you,
I just wanted to ask you something."

The taxi driver said, "Not your fault sir. It's my first day as
a cab driver. I've been driving a hearse for the past 10 years".
