What is the New Year's Eve ball made of?
The original New Year's Eve ball was made of iron
and wood, decorated with 100 25-watt light bulbs. It
weighed 700 pounds and measured five feet in
diameter. The current ball, designed by Waterford Crystal,
is a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter and weighing
1,070 pounds. It's made up of 504 Waterford Crystal
triangles attached to an aluminum frame. The exterior
of the ball is illuminated with 432 light bulbs of varying

Both the lights and mirrors are computer controlled to
create a dazzling light show.

Why Write an eBook?
by Michael Rasmussen
???????????????????????????????????
It's not true that everything that has been said has
already been written. Since that unfortunate axiom
came into use, the whole universe has changed.
Technology has changed, ideas have changed, and the
mindsets of entire nations have changed.
The fact is that this is the perfect time to write an
ebook. What the publishing industry needs are people
who can tap into the world as it is today - innovative
thinkers who can make the leap into the new millennium
and figure out how to solve old problems in a new way.
Ebooks are a new and powerful tool for original
thinkers with fresh ideas to disseminate information
to the millions of people who are struggling to figure
out how to do a plethora of different things.
Let's say you already have a brilliant idea, and the
knowledge to back it up that will enable you to write
an exceptional ebook. You may be sitting at your
computer staring at a blank screen wondering, "Why?
Why should I go through all the trouble of writing my
ebook when it's so impossible to get anything
published these days?
Well, let me assure you that publishing an ebook is
entirely different than publishing a book in print.
Let's look at the specifics of how the print and cyber
publishing industry differ, and the many reasons why
you should take the plunge and get your fingers
tapping across those keyboards!
Submitting a print book to conventional publishing
houses or to agents is similar to wearing a hair shirt
24/7. No matter how good your book actually is, or how
many critique services and mentor writers have told
you that "you've got what it takes," your submitted
manuscript keeps coming back to you as if it is a
boomerang instead of a valuable mine of information.
Perhaps, in desperation, you've checked out
self-publishing and found out just how expensive a
venture it can be. Most "vanity presses" require
minimal print runs of at least 500 copies, and even
that amount will cost you thousands of dollars. Some
presses' minimal run starts at 1,000 to 2,000 copies.
And that's just for the printing and binding. Add in
distribution, shipping, and promotional costs and -
well, you do the math. Even if you wanted to go this
route, you may not have that kind of money to risk.
Let's say you already have an Internet business with a
quality website and a quality product. An ebook is one
of the most powerful ways to promote your business
while educating people with the knowledge you already
possess as a business owner of a specific product or
service.
For example, let's say that you've spent the last
twenty-five years growing and training bonsai trees,
and now you're ready to share your knowledge and
experience. An ebook is the perfect way to reach the
largest audience of bonsai enthusiasts.
Ebooks will not only promote your business - they will
help you make a name for yourself and your company,
and establish you as an expert in your field. You may
even find that you have enough to say to warrant a
series of ebooks. Specific businesses are complicated
and often require the different aspects to be divided
in order for the reader to get the full story.
Perhaps your goals are more finely tuned in terms of
the ebook scene. You may want to build a whole
business around writing and publishing ebooks.
Essentially, you want to start an e-business. You are
thinking of setting up a website to promote and market
your ebooks. Maybe you're even thinking of producing
an ezine.
One of the most prevalent reasons people read ebooks
is to find information about how to turn their
Internet businesses into a profit-making machine. And
these people are looking to the writers of ebooks to
provide them with new ideas and strategies because
writers of ebooks are usually people who understand
the new cyberspace world we now live in. Ebook writers
are experts in Internet marketing campaigns and the
strategies of promoting and distributing ebooks. The
cyberspace community needs its ebooks to be successful
so that more and more ebooks will be written.
You may want to create affiliate programs that will
also market your ebook. Affiliates can be people or
businesses worldwide that will all be working to sell
your ebooks. Think about this? Do you see a formula
for success here?
Figure out what your subject matter is, and then
narrow it down. Your goal is to aim for specificity.
Research what's out there already, and try to find a
void that your ebook might fill.
What about an ebook about a wedding cake business? Or
an ebook about caring for elderly pets? How about the
fine points of collecting ancient pottery?
You don't have to have three masters degrees to write
about your subject. People need advice that is easy to
read and easily understood. Parents need advice for
dealing with their teenagers. College students need to
learn good study skills - quickly. The possibilities
are endless.
After you've written your ebook
Getting your ebook out is going to be your focus once
you've finished writing it, just as it is with print
books. People will hesitate to buy any book from an
author they've never heard of. Wouldn't you?
The answer is simple: give it away! You will see
profits in the form of promoting your own business and
getting your name out. You will find affiliates who
will ask you to place their links within your ebook,
and these affiliates will in turn go out and make your
name known. Almost every single famous ebook author
has started out this way.
Another powerful tool to attract people to your ebook
is to make it interactive. Invent something for them
to do within the book rather than just producing pages
that contain static text. Let your readers fill out
questionnaires, forms, even crossword puzzles geared
to testing their knowledge on a particular subject.
Have your readers hit a link that will allow them to
recommend your book to their friends and associates.
Or include an actual order form so at the end of their
reading journey, they can eagerly buy your product.
When people interact with books, they become a part of
the world of that book. The fact is just as true for
books in print as it is for ebooks.
That's why ebooks are so essential. Not only do they
provide a forum for people to learn and make sense of
their own thoughts, but they can also serve to promote
your business at the same time.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated ...
PART 5 of 13
If you take the shot, you have another chemical in your body.
And we know our immune systems are already
overworked ... so why add to its workload ... and then of
course, another argument could be that you are only
vaccinated against three strains of the influenza virus.
By some misfortune, you could be exposed to a strain for
which you aren't immunized. Here's what a flu is like to a
younger person. You can get fever, chills, headache,
generalized muscle aches, anorexia, and non-productive
cough (no loose sputum to be coughed up.). These symptoms
usually last for 5-10 days. For many of us in the health care
field, it's not an issue. No flu shot: no work. Simple! But for
many others, this is a choice you don't want to make lightly.
But most of us don't live or work in such "high risk" facilities,
so why might you want to protect yourself? The decision
should be based on your own health, your family situation,
and your work or school. I come across many "new caregivers"
who have been told they cannot be allowed to look after
their loved ones if they aren't immunized
harsh words for
many. One of the statistics I found was that in a seniors'
(long term care) facility) out of 100 patients, 60 will get
the flu, and 30 will die. Why such a high death rate? Mainly
because these people's immune system is functioning so
poorly. Plus the fact there are so many people in such
facilities, whose health is compromised, and if the virus
gets a foothold, it has many potential victims.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
It took an hour and a half before it was
ready.
Hemno thought this was about as close to
heaven as one could get. He could not ever
remember food that tasted so terrific. He was in
his glory. He could feel the food go down as he
swallowed. He could feel his energy pick up very
soon after he began eating. The juices within the
meat also helped sate his thirst. This was such a
feeling of wonder, of good, of satisfaction, of
joy.
The hunt did more for Hemno than just supply
him with food. It supplied him with great
confidence. He now knew that, even injured, he
could get his own food. He knew he could survive.
He knew a way to successfully supply his needs. It
has been said that man does not live by bread
alone and it was certainly true here. He could
live on this newfound confidence for he knew he
would be able to get food whenever he needed.
With renewed vigor Hemno now took the bottom
of his staff and scraped a hole in the earth, as
best he could. This earth was hard and there was
the occasional rock he ran into. When done he then
took the skin he had carved off the meat he had
just eaten and as best possible he covered the
exposed end of the meat. Then he placed the meat
into the hole and buried it. This served several
purposes. First, he would sleep on the soft earth
he just put back over the hole. It would be softer
than his earlier bed. Second the meat would be out
of sight and most of its odor would be disguised.
That meant that no hyenas would be molesting him,
trying to get at his food supply.
The day had been a good one. While he was
still in pain he had succeeded. He had enough meat
for a week and now could work on setting up a camp
where he had other things that he would need, like
a comfortable store of wood. Now he could go
looking for a source of water.
Life was having the appearance of becoming
easier for him. He felt his energies coming back
and he had this new confidence that allowed him to
stay away from the childish emotion of feeling
sorry for himself. He had overcome.
Hemno slept. Satisfied with himself, energized
from his meal he slept.
Then it happened, another dream. This time it
was not a wet dream. It was a "voice" calling him.
He listened. He communicated with it. He saw no
person attached to this voice, but it was
insistent. He had to listen. It was compelling.
"Hemno, why do you not use the teaching given
you by Sonora?"
"Wh...what do you mean?"
"Have you not been shown how to use higher law
to provide for your every need?
"Y...y...yes. But that is for Sonora. She can
do that."
"How is it you cannot do this. Have you
decided you will not?
"What do you mean?
"You were able to do these things while in the
presence of Sonora. Now that she is not present
have you made the decision not to progress? You
have all the power of your Maker at your disposal.
Why do you concern yourself with the world of man
when you have at your command the world of your
Maker?
"I...I...I never thought about it. I was busy
trying to get food. Then I hurt myself, and I had
to look after that and carve a crutch. I did not
have time to sit down and think of higher law."
"Hemno. You know higher law. Use it. It is
nothing if it is not highly practical to use it in
all conditions man places himself. You need not
suffer pain. You need not walk around with an
imperfect leg. You need not kill your Makers
animals to provide yourself with food. You need
not search for water. All these things you can ask
for and they shall be given. Higher law is for the
here and now. Use it."
The voice was a command. It came in with the
same absolute reality as his dream of the other
night. This was real. The command altered his
confidence, for the better. He saw himself living
by using higher law. He knew he should have done
that from the very first step he took on his
journey. He knew he could do it.
The morning came early. Hemno was long awake
before the first slivers of light began to show.
He was laying there thinking of the words he had
heard during the night.
He sat up, shivering. The night had been
cooler than before and his fire was out. This was
a good time to live by higher law. He envisioned
himself and all the area around him warm. He
"knew" it was warm and proceeded to think of other
things. Yes, it became instantly warm.

HA! HA! HA!
When my wife's sister, Patty, was very young, she was
allowed to have her best friend, a boy named Rory, over
to spend the night. As the children grew toward
adolescence, their parents knew that someday the
sleepovers would have to end.
One night, when Rory and his family were visiting,
everyone gathered around the television to watch the
Miss America pageant. When Patty asked if Rory could
stay over, the parents hesitated, wondering if the time
had finally come to discontinue the tradition. At that
moment, the pageant host announced a contestant's
measurements: 36-22-36.
"Rory," his mom asked, "what are those numbers?"
The boy thought for only a moment before
responding, "Ninety-four?"
Rory got to spend the night.
