When is the Chinese New Year?
In 2004, it was January 22 (the date changes each year).
That's the first day in the Year of the Monkey. It is Year
4702 by the Chinese calendar.
What is the sport of "gouging"?
It's not around anymore (we hope), but in the Ohio River
Valley area in the early 19th century, "gouging" was a popular
frontier sport. The object of the game: to gouge your opponent's
eye out with your thumbnail. And you thought wrestling and
boxing were bad.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
The 2002 World Cup was hosted by two countries Japan and
South Korea. Before the start of the tournament, there was
a lot of infighting and bickering between the two hosts on
issues such as whose country's name would appear first on
game tickets.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
---------------------
Whose Path Are You On?
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
Have you ever followed a friend's or parent's suggestion for a
career path or relationship only to find that you were going
in a completely wrong direction for yourself? People can be
very persuasive...or directive. And, we listen.
When I was twenty-four, I was madly in love, the kind of love
that almost hurts it is so enthralling. I hope you've had
that experience. For several good reasons, that wonderful
love turned sour and I walked away. My parents and godparents
did not, though. They held onto the idea that this was the
man for me. No matter how much I tried to tell them that it
was wrong, over, done with, finished, kaput, they carried my
torch for me.
Eventually, I succumbed and married a man to whom I was now
completely indifferent. One wonderful son later, I was on my
own, having experienced many kinds of pain. Of course, by
then, the marriage had been "all my idea" and I "should have
known better". At least, that's what the parents said. Oh,
and along with it, "We never really liked him in the first
place!" Sound familiar?
But, now, I'm wiser. I make my own decisions and my own
mistakes. The mistakes may sting, but, at least, they are
mine! And, I learn from them. That's what makes them
worthwhile.
I understand that I have complete responsibility for the
decision-making AND the consequences. This calls for both
clarity and courage. I must know what it is that is important
and significant to me and make sure that what I value is
evident and respected in my decision. No one else can know
that as well as I do.
How about you? Are you making your life-decisions based on
what is important, significant and valuable to you? There is a
huge industry with lots of money that is dedicated to
influencing your choices. Advertising suggest what will make
you feel better, look younger, get your more friends, more
money, more prestige, success...and even cause Prince Charming
to make house calls. But, is it right for you? Only you know
the answer to that.
Once I read a Buddhist saying that suggested that we are happy
when we know what with dignity we can live without. Thinking
about that was a worthwhile exercise. We often have opened
too many boxes in life and never spent enough time or gone to
enough depth to savor the value. We're like children with too
many wonderful birthday gifts: very excited about the
acquisition but never exploring the possibilities.
Have you read a personal improvement book but glossed over the
exercises? Ever taken a life-transforming course and come home
exhilarated? Many folks do and all too soon return to their
old patterns. Maybe, you've taken a vacation and sworn to
keep your commitment to health and balance when you returned
refreshed. Did you do it?
Through practice, the truth is that I make better decisions
now. How about you? Do you know what you prefer? It might
be as simple as knowing what kind of food you want to eat
right now, or which movie you want to see. More importantly,
though, it may be that you're feeling vaguely dissatisfied or
bored, or even, downright miserable. Do you know what lights
you up? What warms your heart? What feeds you? It's your
choice, your decision.
Now is the time to live your dreams. You've heard what Goethe
said: "What you can do or think you can do, begin it. For
boldness has magic, power, and genius in it." Listen. Begin.
Whose path are you on? Hopefully, your own.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated ...
PART 6 of 13
Also, in those types of facilities, it is very difficult to deal
with a flu outbreak, PLUS all the other care to be given.
So routinely, most residents will receive a vaccination.
And if a flu outbreak occurs, the facility shuts its doors to
everyone except the absolute essential workers. Nothing
happens till this "event" is over. That cycle of re-infection
has to be broken. SO ... THE PEOPLE WHO ARE
CAPABLE OF TRANSMITTING THE FLU VIRUS TO
THOSE AT HIGH RISK SHOULD RECEIVE ANNUAL
VACCINATIONS! That is good "infection CONTROL"!
Who should get flu shots? Who are considered high
risk? Consider your parents for this group . . . or your
children. It includes adults and children with chronic
cardiac or pulmonary disorders (including
bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, and
asthma) severe enough to require regular medical
follow-up or hospital care. It includes people of any
age who are residents of nursing homes and other
chronic care facilities. It includes people 65 years of
age and older. It includes adults and children with
chronic conditions such as diabetes or other metabolic
diseases, cancer, immunodeficiency, immunosuppression
(i.e. transplant recipients), renal disease, anemia and
hemoglobinopathy. Children and adolescents (3 years
to 18 years) are considered high risk if they have
conditions that have been treated with aspirin for long
periods of time. Aspirin used after a flu vaccination in
this age group may increase risk of Reyes Syndrome.
Persons infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus
(HIV) are also considered high risk.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
This was a new day for Hemno. He sat by his
still smoldering fire and watched the day break.
There were the first signs of light that allowed
him to see the herds. Then there were the
incredible reds, yellows and oranges just before
the sun broke the horizon. This, like sunset, was
a wonderful part of the day. Hemno had seen in
often.
He sat and thought about higher law. He
wondered why he did not use it earlier, why he had
allowed himself to get so far down before he put
his training to work. He also wondered if he would
be able to render himself whole and what he would
do for food?
Then the "voice" said "You know what you will
do for food, manifest it. And yes you will render
yourself whole. Why doubt ye these things. You
have been taught the way. Travel it."
Hemno took this command as a bit of a rebuke.
It was true he had been taught but he wasn't
absolutely sure "he" could do it. Why was this
voice chasing him so bad? Why was it so insistent?
"Because you have had better training than
most yet you waste it. You live well when others
support you, but you wallow in self doubt and
pity when you are alone."
Hemno didn't much like what he was being told.
Out here he had no choice but to deal with it.
There was no one to turn to, no one to lean on, no
one to blame. He alone must deal with this.
He sat and thought for over an hour. He well
knew he could live the life of man, now that he
had his first kill. He had the confidence to do
that, but what about living by higher law by
himself? Then he made a decision. He well knew he
would die if he failed. He made the decision to
live by higher law and no other way. He would not
hunt. He would not search for water. He would
manifest those things using higher law or he would
die.
The next question he asked himself was "Do I
have the guts to do this? Do I really mean what I
say?"
He rose. He stood defiantly facing the morning
breeze. "Yes. I am Hemno. I will do this."
Just then the sun broke the horizon and it
shone on him making him look as if he were an
angel. He stood strong.
The truth is Hemno did not really know the
consequences of his decision. It was the bravado
of a young man, who, like all young men, thought
himself invincible. He would soon learn.
He closed his eyes and tried to see his leg
completely whole. He tried to "know" it was whole.
Yet, somehow he doubted. The pain was there,
throbbing and it reminded him he had not
succeeded.
He decided he would hobble around a little, go
for a walk, so to speak. He wanted to think on
other things at the moment for all his efforts
appeared to bring him more doubt.
This much one can say for Hemno, however. He
was firm of conviction. He would live by higher
law or die. To him there was no middle ground, no
alternative, and no one here to convince him
otherwise.
Sonora, meanwhile was watching him. Hemno did
not know it but she looked in on him several times
since he began his journey. She did not render
herself visible, neither did she interfere with
what was happening. She was simply keeping tabs on
him.
It hurt her to see him hobbling around. Yet
she knew what was going on in his mind and well
knew she had to stay out of it. This was his life.
He alone had to make the decisions. To some it
comes easy, to some it is difficult. In all cases
the reward goes to those who accept no alternative
but final victory.
She knew Hemno was in for some rough times,
but she also knew that had she made her presence
known he would have taken advantage of it and
himself failed in resolve.
So she watched. She knew of the voice Hemno
heard. She well knew it was his Maker inside him
who was talking to him. Hemno would have to prove
his resolve unto himself. If he held it he would
win. If he gave in he would lose. Such is the way
of higher law. Once must commit utterly entirely,
having nothing else more important than this.
Hemno sat and reflected on the beauty of the
day. He was very thankful for the blessings that
were his. He knew the obstacles he encountered
were there to teach him. He took lessons from all
things. One day he would return home and be called
upon to do his part to support the affairs of the
village. He wanted to be one whom the villagers
looked upon with favor. He knew that meant he had
to find himself out here, alone.
That was okay by him but he had not counted on
this "voice". It surprised him and put a turn into
his journey he had not envisioned. This decision
he had made was going to be tough to live with.

HA! HA! HA!
A boy was watching his father, a pastor,
write a sermon.
"How do you know what to say?" He asked.
"Why, it's God who tells me."
"Oh, well, then why do you keep crossing
things out?"
-------------
A little girl became restless as the preacher's
sermon dragged on and on.
Finally she leaned over to her mother and
whispered, "Mommy, if we give him the money now,
will he let us go?"
