H.L. Mencken, the expression originated with real goats
and real horses. Supposedly, racehorses that were skittish

the stall with them. (You'd THINK that would just upset
them more.) If a gambler or competitor wanted to really
upset someone's horse, he would pay a stableboy to
remove the goat before the race, thus making the horse
MORE skittish and less likely to win.
Why are manholes round?
Manholes are round to ensure that the manhole cover
never accidentally falls inside. Any other shape, such as
a square or rectangle, could be placed at such an angle
that it slips in.

Wisdom At It's Best
It is said that King Henry IV of England decided to ban
the wearing of gold or jewelry in the kingdom.
His advisors laughed behind his back concerning
the edict because they thought its enforcement
impossible.
Then Henry IV had an idea.
He passed a second edict which exempted
all thieves and prostitutes from the first ruling.
I love it! I love it! This one makes me laugh because it's
downright clever.
Wow! What wisdom. Henry IV is not known for wisdom,
so I'm sure this is a joke and not a true story. Think on
the joke for a minute. With the second edict who, in the
kingdom, would wear gold? Brilliant.
Wisdom can happen to all of us. Call it foresight, call it
experience, call it intuition, it is usually the application
of some extraordinary genius that brings about a right
result.
We have all heard the famous story of King Solomon
who, being faced with two women each of whom claimed
the same baby, threatened to cut the baby in half, one
half for each. He gave the child to the women who
refused half, told him not to kill the child, give it to the
other woman. His wisdom told him the real mother
would not want death for her child.
I know a woman who was having trouble with her
daughter's lifestyle at home. The girl was always bring
home guys and dogs, big dogs. The house was a mess
and the guys took this woman's favorite chair. She
couldn't even enjoy TV in her own house. She well knew
that if she said anything she would be in for a fight. So
one day she simply announced to the daughter that
she was going to move out, the daughter could have
the house, including paying for it.
Wow! You don't think that brought on changes real fast
you should have seen it. The mom had threatened to
go live in a little bachelor suite, costing much less and
where there was no room for company. The shock to
the daughter was so great the change was instant. No
more guys. No more dogs. The mom didn't have to say
a thing. By the way I was there. I witnessed this. The
woman was calm and loving through it all. Not a cross
word was spoken, neither did she offer any pointed
recriminations.
Careful thought, caring, patience and loving can often
permit you to display ...

We are doing an invasive procedure to your body, so your
consent is needed. Otherwise we don't do the injection. It
will ask for your name, address, birthdate, and phone
number. And then it asks some very specific questions
as to your present state of health. (You shouldn't be
immunized if you are already ill as this puts a further strain
on the immune system.) You will be asked ... If you have
a serious fever or respiratory infection. If you have you
ever had an allergic reaction to any vaccine ... Or a severe
reaction to the flu immunization before ... If within one
day of receiving the vaccine in previous years, you had
redness in both eyes and/or respiratory symptoms
(cough, wheeze, chest tightness, difficulty breathing or
swallowing, or hoarseness) and/or sore throat, and/or
facial swelling? Did you have ever had a serious allergic
reaction to eggs ... If you are allergic to Thimerosal ...
(mercury, used as a preservative) If you are you allergic
to gelatin or neomycin sulphate (an antibiotic) ... If you
have you ever developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
within 6 weeks of receiving the flu vaccine (a temporary
inflammation of the nerves causing, numbness or partial
paralysis in the extremities). If you are you pregnant: or suspect
that you are pregnant ... If you are you taking any drug
to thin your blood ... (clotting time might be altered). If you
are you allergic to deoxycholate? (a substance naturally
occurring in the bile of humans). If you are you allergic
to formaldehyde ... (another preservative).

stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,

only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.

The City of Pinehill was still a mess. The
downtown area was now an area of boarded up
windows, locked doors and barricades around open
pits where buildings once stood.
Ever since the explosion the City fathers and
interested groups were trying to figure out what
came next. The insurance companies had come into
town and worked with their clients. True to the
nature of the industry there were some insurance
companies who worked well with their clients,
providing money immediately and working through
the claims responsibly, while others went into a
state of denial and did everything they could to
avoid the payment of any funds. These things go on
in the insurance company world. It behooves one to
buy insurance, whatever the cost, from a company
who has a good reputation for pay out and handling
claims responsibly. There are many who do not.
So Pinehill was in a state of transition. Some
thought it an opportunity to change things while
others wanted the nice friendly "small town"
atmosphere to prevail.
Darryl Sparks, the owner/editor of The
Pinehill Sound was in a daze. Not only was he in
demand to attend this meeting or that meeting so
he could report on what was happening, he couldn't
get out of his mind his "instant" trip to South
America.
Ever since he and his wife, Evelyn, had gone
to visit the Henrys that night when they were
taken to see where Eloise lived, and when Jesus
had come to visit, he couldn't get his mind off
what happened. Both he and Evelyn spoke of that
evening every spare moment they had. They were far
more than intrigued by the events, they were
consumed by them.
Thoughts of that night would come to Darryl as
he was driving his car or as he was sitting in his
office. It was beginning to overtake the thinking
he had to do to keep the Pinehill Sound on track
and on time. Deadlines were a constant pressure
and Darryl was having greater and greater
difficulty meeting them.
He finally had to promote someone from within
the organization to begin taking over some of his
work. This thinking about higher law was taking
over his mind.
It is not that Darryl or Evelyn were out of
control. Both had the ability to say yes or no to
the thoughts that entered their minds, but they
were enthralled with the thought of higher law.
"Sam, this is Darryl" were the words Sam Henry
heard over the telephone. "Can you and I get
together for a coffee, or maybe lunch today or
tomorrow?"
"Sure Darryl, how are you? What day would you
prefer?"
"Let's meet today, Sam, over at the hotel
restaurant at, say 11:30 am."
"Sounds good to me Darryl. I'll meet you
there."
Darryl wanted to meet with Sam to see if he
might help in restoring some order to his life.
Things were much more settled and
understandable before he had that meeting that
night at Sam Henry's.
But then isn't that what Jesus told us? That
he came not to bring peace but turmoil, that when
man began to think on these matters of his Maker's
world would man not enter a period of confusion
and strife within himself until he made some
decisions?
That is what Darryl Sparks was going through
now. The "should I or shouldn't I" question. He
was enjoying the turmoil of thinking he should but
knowing he shouldn't. He was afraid his whole life
would change and he was not sure he wanted that.
Yet he didn't want to let go either. He was
fascinated by the potential he might have with
higher law, but he knew that meant getting out of
the newspaper business.
All these things were travelling back and
forth in Darryl Sparks mind. Every thought was
vying for attention and the thoughts he had to
have to continue managing his business were taking
a place on the back burner in his mind. Darryl
well knew he had to make a decision one way or the
other.
Knowing that, of course, did not make the
decision any easier. The leaving of one world for
another one was not sure of was a big step. It was
for anyone, not just Darryl. Whoever said that
life was filled with easy decisions? Why should it
be? And what makes them so hard?
Fear is a word to be introduced here. One
becomes afraid of leaving the secure, known world
in which one lives to trade it off for a world
where there are so many unknowns. The questions of
failure are always front and center in these
matters. One always asks "What if I don't make it?
What if I fail? What if it doesn't work?

It was election time and a politician decided to go out
to the local reservation and try to get the Native American
vote. They were all assembled in the Council Hall to
hear the speech. The politician had worked up to his
finale, and the crowd was getting more and more
excited. "I promise better education opportunities
for Native Americans!"
The crowd went wild, shouting "Hoya! Hoya!" The
politician was a bit puzzled by the native word, but was
encouraged by their enthusiasm. "I promise gambling
reforms to allow a Casino on the Reservation!"
"Hoya! Hoya!" cried the crowd, stomping their feet.
"I promise more social reforms and job opportunities
for Native Americans!" The crowd reached a frenzied
pitch shouting "Hoya! Hoya! Hoya!"
After the speech, the Politician was touring the
Reservation, and saw a tremendous herd of cattle. Since
he was raised on a ranch, and knew a bit about cattle,
he asked the Chief if he could get closer to take a look
at the cattle.
"Sure," the Chief said, "but be careful not to step in
the hoya."
