Is the "black box" on an airplane really black?
Nope, it's orange. Orange is easier to spot when rescuers
are looking for it. The "black box" contains a stainless steel
tape that records information on altitude and airspeed. A
second box contains a recording of the last 30 minutes of
conversation in the cockpit. Why is the box called "black"?
That I don't know. Readers?
What does the "zip" in "zip code" stand for?
ZIP stands for the Zoning Improvement Plan.

Crazy Like a Firefox
&Mac221; &Mac221; &Mac221; What's The Buzz?
Sponsored by washingtonpost.com
BY Rebecca Lieb | November 12, 2004
Fans of Mozilla's free, open-source Firefox browser make
the ardent Apple faithful look like a bunch of slackers. Their
community-generated Spread Firefox (SFX) campaign,
launched less than two months ago, is already one of the
watershed campaigns in interactive marketing history. It's
helped generate over a million downloads per day since
Firefox went out of beta on Tuesday; registered over 25,000
volunteer marketers; encouraged about 100,000 Web sites
to display promotional buttons and banners; generated
wall-to-wall coverage in the blogosphere and mainstream
media; and raised a quarter of a million dollars for a
full-page ad in The New York Times.
"This summer, we saw we were getting comfortable with
a 1.0 product," Chris Hofmann, chief engineer at the
nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, told me. "We started to
kick around how we're going to promote this. It's a
nonprofit foundation, a bunch of engineers. So we said,
'Let's use the same model as we've used for the software.'
Engineers built the spreadfirefox.com Web site. We just
kind of opened the door to come up with a bunch of
creative ideas."
Call it open-source marketing, or
viral/buzz/word-of-mouth/community/advocacy/guerilla
marketing. Some dub it "consumer control," the theme of
this week's AD:TECH. Whatever you call it, and as
marketers blah-blah-blah about it, it's out there
happening -- and the results are stunning.
Love (on the Internet) Conquers All
Firefox really is a kick-ass browser. It's light, stable, and
almost infinitely customizable. It also boasts plenty of
optional features that are going to scare the bejesus out
of marketers and publishers, like ad blocking and an
option to integrate Bugmenot to bypass site registration.
To its millions of fans, Firefox is a hero, and to many that
heroism isn't just because it's open source. But for every
hero, there's a villain. In this case, the villain is
Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE).

To Be Vaccinated Or
Not To Be Vaccinated ...
PART 11 of 13
The next one is a bit of a challenge to understand. If you
are taking a beta blocker medication, we want to know if you
have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any medication
or bee sting ... The problem is not the drug, but the action
of the drug we MIGHT have to give in case of an allergic
reaction. The beta-blocker will not work as well and we
would need to be aware of that. We also need to know if
you are allergic to latex rubber. How can you tell? The
easiest way would be to see if your hands are itchy and
red after wearing household or cleaning gloves for a specific
period of time. The nurse must follow a certain protocol if
this allergy exists. How does all this work? How do you get
the actual vaccination? You will receive the flu shot into a
muscle in the arm (Deltoid). To make this even easier for
yourself, relax your arm as much as possible. If the arm is
relaxed, the tissue inside will have lots of room for the fluid.
Stiffen it up and it's painful and will most likely bleed. Most
people have little or no reaction (side effects) to the flu shot.
There may be some redress, swelling, or soreness at the
site of injection for 1-2 days. Some people can experience
fever and achy muscles (flu-like symptoms) 6-12 hours after
the injection. These flu-like symptoms can last 1-2 days.
Taking acetaminophen may help alleviate these side effects.
Understand that you could also have red itchy eyes with
some drainage and swollen eyelids combined with a
cough, sore throat, difficult breathing, wheezing and/or
swelling of the face.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Oh! The turmoil that goes through ones mind
when they lose confidence in themselves. When in
this situation one seems to lose completely the
level of confidence and trust one had in
themselves in the world in which they presently
live. The thought of going to a new world, doing
things differently in one's life, leaving all the
material goods one has worked a lifetime for,
appears to render one completely without faith and
trust in themselves. It is foolish, of course, yet
it happens.
The personal confidence one has in themselves
is to be taken with one wherever they go. Entering
upon a new venture, a new life, a new condition is
where one needs that faith and trust in oneself.
Just because one is considering higher law is no
reason to be rendered weak, or to permit it in
oneself. However, pride stays home. There is no
room for confidence based on arrogance or pride.
Another thing one should bear in mind is the
path is not new, it is only new to you. It has
been travelled before by many, and successfully.
It is sad, however, that many have tried and,
lacking the stamina or conviction, have fallen by
the wayside. And that is the choice one makes,
isn't it?
That is what Darryl Sparks was facing. In his
heart of hearts he knew what decision he had to
make, yet he didn't want to make it. He was
reluctant to leave what he had, what he knew, what
he liked. This was an earth shattering decision
for him. Strangely not so for his wife. She was in
a position where she had not much to do and, if
truth be known, was somewhat unhappy with her life
and her accomplishments. She saw nothing impeding
her path. It was she who was the driving force in
the family. It was she who was pushing Darryl to
think on these matters. She didn't do it in any
forceful way. It was just that she had developed a
keen interest in all the possibilities when one
lived by higher law. So, every night when Darryl
came home that is all she talked about. She did
not know Darryl was meeting Sam Henry.
Sam arrived at the restaurant early. He wanted
to pick out a good table before the lunch crowd
arrived. He picked one right in the corner where
there were no windows offering distractions and he
sat with his back to the wall. That way Darryl
would end up having his back to the rest seated in
the restaurant and therefore few distractions that
way.
While waiting Sam ordered a coffee and sat
back to do a little reminiscing. This, after all,
was the place where all this adventure began. It
was here one night so long ago where Mr. Gladstone
met and spoke with Eloise and David. It was here
he made his proposal to them and it was here the
Henrys and the Wileys met with Gladstone and gave
him their agreement and signatures.
"My! Much water has flowed under the bridge
since that day." Sam was thinking in his own mind.
He was recalling the places he and the family had
been, the things they had done, the people they
had affected. He was watching in his mind as if he
were witnessing a motion picture.
"Far away and thinking are we?" Darryl's voice
brought Sam back to the here and now.
"I was just thinking of all that has happened
in the last few years. I am not sure you realize
this Darryl but this is the place where Eloise's
and David's adventure began. It was here we met
with Gladstone and all agreed to that crazy
journey the kids were offered."
"I didn't realize that Sam. No wonder you were
in reverie. What was that, five years ago, six,
eight?"
"Somewhere in there. A lot has happened since
that day."
"I'll say it has. Look at the changes in
Pinehill alone. Look at what happened in David
Wiley's family, then the Hunters when Pam married
David and moved away. Look at what happened to the
Whites when Jim went to his church to tell them of
his new thinking. Look at the Strikers, Mae Wiley
and even your neighbor Susan Miles. You're right,
Sam, a lot has happened in those years."
"Darryl, I'm not sure I ever said this to you
so I want to say it now. I appreciate the respect
you have shown me and my family through your
newspaper. Your appreciation for our privacy and
your understanding that sensationalism was out of
order is sincerely appreciated by me. Thank you."
"Sam, you're a friend of mine and a friend to
this city. It is important to this city that you
remain here as was evidenced by the wonderful job
you guys did when that building exploded. As a
responsible journalist I wanted to do what was
right for this town and for you. I thank you for
your appreciation. And I thank you for the
exclusives you have given me over the while.
You're welcome. Now as to why I wanted to meet
with you. I have some questions."

HA! HA! HA!
Driving through Southern California, I stopped at a roadside
stand that sold fruit, vegetables, and crafts.
As I went to pay, I noticed the young woman behind the
counter was painting a sign.
"Why the new sign?" I asked.
"My boyfriend didn't approve of the old one," she said.
When I glanced at what hung above the counter, I understood.
It declared, "Local Honey, Dates, Nuts."

"Even though you may want to move forward in your life,
you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free,
we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the
fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain. The energy it takes
to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life.
What is it you would let go of today?"
