Who was Psyche?

Psyche is a young woman in ancient mythology who
attracts the interest of the god of love (Eros, better
known by his Roman name, Cupid). Cupid is the son of
the goddess of love, Venus (Aphrodite), and is instructed
by his mother to punish Psyche by making her fall in
love with a monster. When Cupid sees her, however,
he falls in love with her himself. Careful to avoid the
ire of his mother, he arranges to marry Psyche, but
only visits her under cover of darkness. She has no
idea who her husband really is and gradually becomes
convinced (with the help of some jealous sisters) that
she might be married to a monster. One night she
violates Cupid's order never to try to discover his true
identity and uses a lamp to gaze on him when he sleeps.

When was insulin first discovered?

Insulin was discovered in 1889 by German doctors
Oskar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering, who noticed
that removing the pancreas caused diabetes in animals.
The hormone, which regulates the level of sugar in the
body, was not actually isolated and used to treat
diabetic patients until 1922.

Around The Net

This is taken directly Just An Online Minute. It's worth your
observation if you are into internet marketing:

Here are a few findings and some interesting data, courtesy
of Claria Corp.'s Feedback Research unit:

• Claria finds that 66 percent of Web users prefer to purchase
holiday gifts online, up 12 percent from last season. Of those
who shop online for holiday gifts, 70 percent of survey
respondents do so because of convenience, while 61 percent
shop online to avoid crowds.

• The number of respondents researching product and pricing
information online before buying online (56 percent), grew
8 percent over last year.

• Eighty percent of respondents said they will research
holiday gifts online before buying either in stores or online.

• Fifty-two percent of Web users will begin shopping more
than 30 days before Christmas.

• Amazon.com captures the most viewers and 10 percent of
total traffic for major retailing sites; eBay followed with
9.7 percent and iVillage with 7 percent.

• Ninety-one percent of respondents said they will buy
holiday gifts this season and when asked how much they
plan to spend online, 66 percent said that they would
spend $100 or more this season.

Claria analyzed the online behavior of millions of Web
users, monitoring traffic from September 1 to November 1
among consumers who viewed retailing sites in the
apparel, books, toys, flowers, gifts, jewelry, cosmetics,
and fitness and nutrition categories.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Questions & Answers:
Thoughts on Iron Supplementation
PART 2 of 5

Iron is a cofactor for enzymes involved in niacin
(vitamin B3) synthesis, carnitine synthesis, DNA synthesis,
the conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine and for cell
replication.

1 Iron deficiency anemia occurs when iron
stores in the body become severely depleted and
hemoglobin cannot be synthesized. With anemia red
blood cells become small and pale, and unable to deliver
adequate oxygen to the cells. Symptoms of iron deficiency
anemia include; decreased work capacity, weakness,
fatigue, headache, changes in behavior, impaired
development in infants, and decreased resistance to
infection.

2 Iron deficiency anemia effects about 12 %
of women in industrialized countries.

3 Menstruating
women are at a greater risk for developing iron deficiency
anemia because monthly blood losses decrease iron
stores. Pregnant women are also susceptible to iron
deficiencies. During pregnancy additional iron is needed
to support the growth and development of the growing fetus.

4 Iron overload is also a concern, with up to ten percent
of the population suffering from iron overload. Iron overload
may result in hemachromatosis, a disorder that can result
in the failure of multiple organ systems, cirrhosis, diabetes
and heart failure.

5 As such, iron supplements should be used only with
the advice of a medical professional and only after iron
levels have been determined by serum ferritin testing.
Iron toxicity may occur if high levels of supplemental
iron are continuously ingested over long periods of
time. Iron can be extremely toxic to children and can
even become fatal.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

A week had passed and the newcomers to the
village proved to be takers rather than givers.
They took anything that was offered to them and
contributed nothing. For years the villages up and
down the river had heard about and talked about
this village. Their prosperity was renowned and
their ways were also known.

The newcomers were somewhat afraid of the
villagers in spite of the love that was directed
toward them. Taking and not giving was a sign of
the fear they felt inside. They did not want to go
back to their own village, but they did not trust
the villagers here. There had been too many
stories about the powers these people had.

Mazunta and Eloise each tried to go into the
sub village and talk with them but every time they
did they were greeted kindly but with fear
underneath.

The entire situation was of great concern to
the villagers. They had lived in peace and love
for so long they really did not want this new
group to interrupt the serenity of the village.

Mazunta spoke with the elders. He advised them
he had the notion these new folk would move on and
establish another village of their own down river
from here. "I have suggested to them that if they
decide to do that they should go no more than one
days journey. That way they can come back here
quickly for safety if a problem arises."

"You really said that to them?" The elders
asked this question in surprise.

"Yes. It is easy to see they are not
comfortable with this situation. They have been
through a shock. It drove them here where they are
not sure they want to be. I think they will want
to leave soon, and we should help them out as much
as we can. We need them as friends, not as people
who are afraid of us."

"Well said Mazunta. That wisdom is what we
need at this point."

"As to the dangers the people with the
helicopters present, those of us who live by
higher law have a plan we are about to implement.
Please do not ask what it is. It is enough for you
to know we shall not ever be bothered by these
people."

"If you have said it we accept it. We shall
neither ask nor worry. Please give our thanks to
the others who help you." With that the elders
concluded the meeting.

Mazunta walked back to his hut. There was
Eloise and some company. Boolanga, David and Pam
had come over to chat further on the plans they
had made.

"I'm concerned not only for our own" said
David, "I'm thinking these people must ruin the
lives of many throughout the world. However, we
know for sure they simply kill the natives whose
villages they decide they want. Surely we should
prevent that?"

"On that, David, I think we all agree."
Mazunta was firm.

"It is amazing, isn't it, how the influx of
those who know not peace and love can adjust the
attitude of a village. Here we were living out our
lives in peace and harmony when these folks
appear. They are full of fear and mistrust. Now
our own villagers are showing signs of
possessiveness and anger toward their fellow man.
Attitudes can spread through a group like leaven
in a loaf of bread." Pam was observing the changes
happening to the people in the village. They had
been responding to the attitudes of the new group
that had arrived. Unwittingly they were becoming
like the new group.

She observed that like the rotten apple in the
barrel there is no amount of "good" energy from
the other apples that will make that one whole,
fresh and new. But, the one rotten one will spread
the decay and rot to all the rest in the barrel.
People are the same way. The automatic tendency is
toward the selfish things, the bad things, the
things that produce hatred, anger and mistrust.

She rightly concluded it takes people of
courage and commitment to hold to higher values,
even if those higher values are not higher law.
Once those values are challenged it reveals who a
person is. Most folks slip into the negative for a
short while, because they do not see it happening.
However, only the strong and wise come back to the
values they have lived by. The rest slip into the
negative and begin to fight and squabble
like the rest of the seagulls on the beach.

Pam was internally very thankful for having
the opportunity to live in this village and for
the chance to learn and live by higher law. It was
beyond her why the whole world did not live this
way by choice. Inside she said "Thanks."

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run,
deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the
discipline...I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - this
greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear – is that moment
when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and
lies exhausted on the field of battle, victorious."

HA! HA! HA!

An old Sailor and an old Marine were sitting at the VFW
arguing about who'd had the tougher career.

"I did 30 years in the Corps," the Marine declared proudly,
"and fought in three of my country's wars. Fresh out of boot
camp, I hit the beach at Okinawa, clawed my way up the
blood-soaked sand, and eventually took out an entire
enemy machine gun nest with a single grenade.

"As a sergeant, I fought in Korea. We pushed back the
enemy inch by bloody inch all the way up to the Chinese
border, always under a barrage of artillery and small
arms fire.

"Finally, as a gunny sergeant, I did three consecutive
combat tours in Vietnam. We humped through the mud
and razorgrass for 14 hours a day, plagued by rain and
mosquitoes, ducking under sniper fire all day and mortar
fire all night. In a firefight, we'd fire until our arms ached
and our guns were empty, then we'd charge the enemy
with bayonets!"

"Ah," said the Sailor with a dismissive wave of his hand,
"all shore duty, huh?"
