TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is xenotransplantation?

What organism can live as long as a year after losing its head?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

When did surgeons begin using antiseptics?

Much later than you would think. Antiseptics, used to
prevent infection, were not used widely until the late
nineteenth century. Until then, many patients died after
successful surgeries from infections they contracted
in the hospital.

When was the first heart transplant?

The first heart transplant occurred in 1967 in Capetown,
South Africa. The patient lived for only 18 days. A second
transplant, performed several days later in New York, was
no more successful - the patient lived only a few hours.
Techniques have improved greatly since then and some
heart recipients have lived for six years or more.

Here's To Think On ...
by Ken Darby

Customs Need Not Separate

A priest and a rabbi operated a church and a synagogue
across the street from each other. Since their schedules
intertwined, they decided to go in together to buy a car.

After the purchase, they drove it home and parked it on
the street between them.

A few minutes later, the rabbi looked out and saw the
priest sprinkling water on their new car. It didn't need a
wash, so he hurried out and asked the priest what he
was doing. "I'm blessing it," the priest replied.

The rabbi considered this a moment, then went back
inside the synagogue. He reappeared a moment later
with a hacksaw, walked over to the back of the car and
cut off two inches of the tailpipe.

Cute huh? I love it. Different customs give us sometimes
a reason to smile, as shown in the joke above. Yet
sometimes, too often, they can allow us to think people
are sufficiently different that it separates us.

Let not different customs separate. Think instead of the
uniqueness of them and enjoy. Get to learn why a person
observes a custom and come to an better understanding
of him/her.

Most customs come out of some religious belief, meaning
there is solid and sound reason for them in the minds of
the practitioners. Some come out of needs created by the
geography of an area, the climate or the available food
supply. Whatever the custom there is usually a good
explanation for it.

Make not fun, taunt not, for you, too, have customs that to
others may appear to be so different it separates you
from the bunch. Did you ever think of that?

I will never forget one day in Denver, Colorado I was told I
had an accent. For some reason it really threw me. I spoke
English just like the person I was speaking with. It had
never occurred to me, in all my life, that I spoke with an
accent. It seems that I used some terms that were slightly
different, I pronounced some words different and I
emphasized some words different than my audience.

I have been thankful for that little exchange. It pointed
out to me I was no different than anyone else in the world,
meaning that I did things my way for some reason that was
fine with me but was different to someone else. Since that
day I have looked for the differences in people and have
come to love and enjoy them

You can too ...

Questions & Answers:
Thoughts on Iron Supplementation
PART 3 of 5

Death could occur if a small child swallowed an entire
bottle of iron supplements. It is important to keep all
iron supplements securely sealed and out of reach of
children.

Sources and Recommended Intake:
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of iron is
10 mg a day for males and 15 mg a day for females.
The RDA increases to 30 mg a day during pregnancy.

6 Best sources of iron include red meats, poultry, and fish,
which contain heme iron (iron bound to hemoglobin and
myoglobin). Organ meats, such as liver, are some of the
richest sources of dietary iron.

2 Other foods sources include green leafy vegetables,
legumes, whole or enriched grain products, nuts, and
seeds.

3 Many commercially prepared foods such as breakfast
cereals are iron fortified. Consciously eating a well-balanced
diet should provide adequate amounts of dietary iron for
most people.

4 Absorption of iron increases when iron body stores are low.

5 Abstracts Singh K, Fong YF, Arulkumaran S. Anaemia in
pregnancy--a cross-sectional study in Singapore.
Eur J Clin Nutr 1998 Jan; 52(1): 65-70. To determine the
prevalence and predictors of anaemia in pregnancy in
Singapore.
DESIGN: Hospital based case controlled study.
SETTING: National University Hospital, between
January-December 1993. SUBJECTS: All women
delivered at the National University Hospital, Singapore
in 1993 had their haemoglobin estimated. If it was
less than 11 gm/dl, blood was taken to establish the
cause of anaemia.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Well, let's go put our plan in motion. There
is no need to wait until we are faced with
difficulty or danger." Mazunta, always the leader
was about to get the plan underway.

In the flash of an eye the group vanished.

Mazunta, and Boolanga went directly to where
the drug dealers were setting up camp. The first
thing they did was to put an exaggerated rise
within the barrel of every gun in the place. The
next thing they did was to sharpen to a dangerous
state, all the handles on all knives in the
compound, and then they placed tiny hairline
fractures 95 percent of the way through every
handle of every shovel, axe, hammer or anything
else that could be used as a weapon. That ensured
that nothing the drug soldiers went for could be
used as a weapon.

Nextly the pair of them, remaining invisible,
broadcast a love that produced confusion among
those who knew not love. The result was the men
and women in the compound began to argue with one
another. They became confused and failed to carry
out the tasks they had been given. One was walking
to a shed they had set up, to get a vehicle to
drive somewhere. Halfway to the shed he
stopped, scratched his head and turned around and
went back. When he got back to the step there was
some talking and one man turned the man around and
kicked him in the rear, pushing him toward the car
once more. The same thing happened, again and
again. Finally the man on the step drew a weapon
and aiming it at the man, fired.

The weapon backfired. The damage done inside
the barrel would not permit the bullet room to
exit. The rapidly expanding gasses within the
weapon had to go somewhere and they came back
through the breech with a fury, blinding and
harming the man who shot. He fell, holding his
hand and his eyes. He was screaming and hollering,
moving, rolling around. He was in terrific pain
and rendered useless.

Mazunta and Boolanga made themselves visible.
No one saw them. The group was paying attention to
the screaming man on the steps.

"So long as your activities bring any harm to
any man or nature, so long shall you live in
confusion. Only when you perform to the benefit of
mankind shall you be successful." The words,
though spoken in calm and with love had the force
of cannon shot on the ears, heads and minds of the
listeners. Their soldiers among them swirled
around with raised rifles and automatic weapons.
Without so much as a question three of them opened
fire. The weapons did exactly the same thing to
the soldiers as the one in the hands of their
leader did to him. The guns all exploded in the
hands of the soldiers burning them and sending
pieces of the weapon into them. All three were
wounded severely.

Some of the rest looked at their guns and
dropped them. Taking hunting knives out of their
sheaths they attempted an attack, until blood was
running down their own arms. They stopped to look
at their own hands and dropped their knives. Their
own hands were cut so bad they were all bleeding
profusely.

One grabbed for a shovel. It broke where it
lie. The handle broke into a hundred pieces.

"I will tell you one more time. Only as you do
good for mankind shall your efforts be successful.
Think on doing harm and it shall only come back to
harm you. Your activities here are to make you
money, yet in order to do that you must sell this
stuff that harms those who buy it. Henceforth this
material you produce, here or anywhere else shall
be no more than sugar. Hark my words or you shall
die by your own actions." Mazunta spoke his last
words to this group. Looking at Boolanga, they
both vanished, arriving back at the village.

Eloise and Pam circled the village and
environs in a circle with a radius of 20 miles
from the village. They spread a shield that
reached below the earth for a mile and up into the
sky for three miles and it encircled the village
completely. This shield would prevent any aircraft
or other machine of man from entering the circle.
That meant no automobiles, aircraft, mechanized
boats could enter. Any who did, or tried, would
turn back in confusion. Only if they went around
or over could they get past this circle of
protection. Any living within the circle would be
protected. They returned to the village.

David had the work of closing off all trails
and roads that led into the circle. Wherever there
was a trail or a road he caused it to be diverted
back onto itself in such a way that any who
traveled it would not know it was the trail or
road on which they had just travelled. The river
only was exempt from this work. And he returned to
the village.

From this day none but those with good
intentions could enter this circle.

TOP 10 REASONS EVE WAS CREATED

10. God worried that Adam would frequently become
lost in the garden because he would not ask for directions.

9. God knew that Adam would one day require someone
to locate and hand him the TV remote.

8. God knew that Adam would never go out and get
himself a new fig leaf when his seat wore out and
would therefore need Eve to get one for him.

7. God knew that Adam would never be able to make a
doctor's, dentist or haircut appointment for himself.

6. God knew that Adam would never be able to remember
which night to put the garbage on the curb.

5. God knew that if the world was to be populated, men
would never be able to handle the pain and discomfort
of childbearing.

4. As Keeper of the Garden, Adam would never remember
where he left his tools.

3. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his
troubles on when God caught him hiding in the garden.

2. As the Bible says, It is not good for man to be alone!

And finally, the number ONE reason that God created Eve...

1. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped
back, scratched His head and said,
"I can do better than that."
