What is xenotransplantation?
Xenotransplantation is the transplanting of animal organs
into humans. Surgeons already use pig heart valves to
replace human heart valves that have worn out. They've
also attempted to transplant other animal organs, including
a baboon heart and baboon liver, into humans.
What organism can live as long as a year after losing its head?
Certain kinds of insects can live as long as a year after
having their head severed! What's more, the insects can
still react to stimuli, such as light and temperature.

Here's To Think On ...
by Ken Darby

Quick To Judge
A young kid gets on the bus, his hair is spiked and dyed
green, purple, and orange. His face and body are full of
tattoos and body piercing. He sits down directly across
from an old man who just stares at him. The punk gets
self-conscious and barks at the old man:
"What are you looking at, old man? Didn't you ever do
anything wild when you were young?"
The old man says, "Yeah. When I was in the Navy, I got
really drunk one night and had sex with a parrot. I thought
maybe you were my son."
My, how we are quick to judge. I know not what happens
between 16 and 36 but somewhere in there we forget we
were once 16 and, in our time, just as seeking of making
a statement.
I recall when I was a young man it was the thing to do to
wear oxfords in the wintertime, without rubbers, overshoes
or without being replaced by proper winter footwear.
"That was cool man." And I can tell you it was cool on
many a night standing at bus stops or waiting in lines
outside theaters. But we did it because everybody did it.
We also wore summer clothing in the way of pants and
jackets. We were tough. We didn't need winter clothing.
Gee, I look back on those days and think of the risks we
took. There is no way I would consider doing those things
today. Winter in this country can kill... fast. But don't tell us
that in those days.
I am quite sure, if you are honest with yourself, you can find
things in your teenage past that are similar. Remember
them, and the next time you see a bunch of these weird
kids standing on the street corner don't hesitate to walk
up to them and chat a little. They will surprise you, I promise.
Underneath all the spikes, the color, the lack of clothing,
the tough looks and the weird behavior are real people
who might just be the mayor of your city one day, or a
member of congress or parliament or even a nurse or
doctor who will one day save your life.
Be not ... Quick To Judge

Questions & Answers:
Thoughts on Iron Supplementation
PART 4 of 5
Data was also collected with regard to their antenatal progress,
and factorspredisposing to anaemia in pregnancy. Logistic
regression, Chi-square test, Fischer's exact test,
Mantel-Haenszel test were used to assess the relationships
between categorical variables.
RESULTS: The prevalence of anaemia at delivery was 15.3%.
The most common cause of anaemia in pregnancy was due
to iron deficiency (81.3%). The occurrence of anaemia in
pregnancy is related to the socio-economic status of the
women. Multiparous women of the lower socio-economic
class who tend to book late in pregnancy were found to
have the highest risk of anaemia. Multivariate logistic
regression analysis revealed iron prophylaxis, haemoglobin
level at booking, race and previous history of anaemia in
earlier pregnancy as important predictors of anaemia
at delivery. The odds of anaemia for a woman not on therapy
was about 11 times that of her counterpart on prophylactic
iron therapy (95% CI 8.76-14.13). A 55% reduction in
odds of anaemia was estimated per 1 gm% increase in
haemoglobin level at booking. As compared to Chinese,
Malays and Indians who experienced significant increase
in odds of anaemia of 95% and 58% respectively. Further,
a pregnant woman with a previous history of anaemia
is 2.6 times as likely to be anaemic, as compared with
one without history of anaemia. Except for a higher
incidence of preterm delivery, there was no other
statistically increased risk of complications in the
antepartum, intrapartum or postpartum periods.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The market was crowded. It felt like there
were a million people there. One could walk
nowhere without having to push their way through
the people. It was wall to wall flesh. If one was
not used to this it would be an excellent
opportunity to be claustrophobic. Put simply the
press of flesh was so great it was nothing short
of being a sea of humanity.
Accompanying the press of flesh was, of
course, the odors of the flesh. The smell of any
one person blended into the smell of the masses
and the dominant aroma was flesh. It was not
distasteful, but it was human flesh. You might
imagine the combined smell of all these people on
this hot sunshiny day.
Mixed with that were the smells of fruits,
vegetables, fresh meat hanging, hot food cooking
and beverages of all kinds.
Then there was the noise, a continual
cacophony of sounds of people talking, yelling,
merchandise being picked up and put down, people
singing, bicycles clanging and the occasional car
attempting to manoeuvre the market. A vehicle
would take as much as an hour to travel a hundred
feet. The people were so pressed a vehicle could
not get through.
There was continual movement. If one wanted to
stand perfectly still it would be impossible. In
fact if one wanted to stay in one place that was
nearly impossible. The continual moving of the
crowd swept one along and it would be easy to get
lost if you didn't fight to stay where you were.
If you were with company and wanted to stay
together you nearly had to tie yourselves
together. Certainly you had to hold hands.
It was almost a dangerous place for children.
Those who were only as tall as the waist of most
adults could easily become trampled.
Such was the way of this market. Everyday it
was like this. If anything had happened to set off
a panic there would be hundreds killed and
trampled. Yet it would not change.
Mae, Susan and Tlang were there in the
marketplace. They had come into this city a couple
days earlier and had just now arrived at the
market. They, like others, gravitated to the
markets because that is where the "action" was.
The news of whats happening was there, and the
common man was there. Gregarious people always
tended to go where the crowd was.
Mae and Susan were not so gregarious but once
in a while just missed being with people. It was a
natural ebb and flow of internal needs that
brought them here.
Gradually they worked their way to a place
where they could eat. They bought some food and
found a place to sit. The seat was not plush by
any means. They sat down on the curb. At
least it was still.
For over three months now the trio had been on
the road. They had not travelled far. They,
instead met with local people and spent time here
and there just visiting. Tlang was now seven years
of age. She had her birthday on the road.
Mae and Susan gave her a little party,
birthday cake and all. Tlang was not used to the
type of cake one gets in North America, but it was
tasty and the older ladies made quite a fuss over
her. She enjoyed the day, being the center of
attention and receiving the new clothes Mae and
Susan had manifested for her.
Travelling light, as they did, meant one
really only had the clothes on their back.
Whenever they came across a stream they could
disrobe and wash their clothes. Of course, living
by higher law kept both their clothes and their
bodies clean. One can easily dispense with things
you don't want if you live by higher law. Dirt and
dust are things most folks don't want. They were
easily done away with.
Tlang was now far enough away from the
terrible conditions in which Mae and Susan found
her that she no longer reacted to forceful
conditions by automatic reaction. She was learning
new ways with Mae and Susan and she had a good
life now. She learned to be concerned for others
and to give, with no thought of return. That was
one advantage of travelling and keeping on the
move. One could give while realizing they would
receive nothing in return. They simply wouldn't be
there to receive anything.
While that was one benefit of travelling, and
there were others, it did mean Tlang missed the
benefits of living in one place. Each had it's
place in one's life and Mae and Susan were
beginning to think on those benefits for Tlang.
"Tlang" Susan said at lunch, "It is about time
we or at least you, settled down in one place and
start to put your life together with the
advantages of stability offered by staying in one
place. We can go to the village where Mae lives,
that is in South America, or we can go back to
Sjong Ju where Riata and Amenti have the
orphanage. Which of those would you prefer?"

HA! HA! HA!
Millions of years ago, there was no such thing as the wheel.
The only way to move things was by carrying or dragging.
One day, some primitive guys were watching their wives
drag a dead mastodon to the food preparation area. It was
exhausting work. The guys were getting tired just WATCHING.
Then they noticed some large, smooth, rounded boulders
and they had an idea. They could sit on the boulders and
watch! This was the first in a series of breakthroughs that
ultimately led to television.
