Tips And Tidbits

This article was taken from eMarketer Daily. I wonder if it
forecasts higher service charges at banks. Anybody want
to bet? Have a look ...

Will Online Bill Payment Help Banks Pay Their Bills?
November 18, 2004

Online banking continues to grow in popularity, with
online bill payment use growing especially quickly.

Ipsos-Insight reports that the percentage of US adults
who "frequently" or "sometimes" engage in online banking
will rise from 26% in 2002 to 40% by the end of 2004,
an increase of 17%. This is similar to eMarketer's
conclusion that the number of online banking
households will increase by 17.5% in the same
time period.

Consumers' use of online banking has also increased
in sophistication. Ipsos-Insight Vice President and
member of Ipsos-Insight's Financial Services Kerri Ryan
notes that "Online customers are making account
balance inquiries, transferring funds, and paying bills
online more often than they were in 2002." In fact,
while one-half of respondents to Ipsos's 2002 poll said
they had paid bills online, almost all respondents say
they do so in the 2004 survey. In addition, a new study
by Celent Communications predicts that online bill
payment, as a percentage of all bill payment methods,
will increase from 10% in 2003 to 29% in 2007, to the
detriment of paper checks, which will fall from 59% to
29% over the same time frame.

To be clear, the online bill payment category includes
both payments made directly at a biller's Web site, and
payments made through a bank to the biller. Between
2004 and 2007, Celent predicts that consumers will
increasingly favor paying bills through their bank — the
number of bill payments conducted through bank Web
sites will increase at a CAGR of 34% in this time period,
compared to a CAGR of 28% for payments made through
a biller's Web site. However, more people will pay bills
online through biller sites than through banks in 2007,
just like in 2004, despite the banks' gains.

As a glance at recent bank commercials on TV might
suggest, banks are intent on attracting customers to their
online bill payment systems. eMarketer Senior Analyst
David Hallerman explains, the advantages of online bill
payment to banks are numerous: "Whichever way it's
viewed, online bill payment is a steadily increasing and
important aspect of the Internet's financial world. But
banks, to their consternation, are not the leaders in
online bill payment — billers are. And yet the banking
industry has several reasons why it wants consumers
to pay all their bills online, at the bank's Web site."
These include:

* More customer touch-points per month
* Greater customer retention
* More satisfied customers
* Cross-selling to customers
* Boosting lost income from the waning usage of
traditional, paper checks

The last objective entails a careful balancing act for
banks. Consumers who pay their bills directly though
a biller's Web site almost never have to pay a fee to do
so, and for banks to compete, they must offer at least
some free online bill payment ability. At the same time,
banks want to make online bill payment an income
source. Since their fee structure cuts down on the
proceeds they take in, banks must look for ways to
reduce their costs.

For example, Celent notes in its report that banks must
evaluate whether the third-party infrastructure they
currently employ (with companies such as CheckFree,
Metavante and others) should be discarded. Celent
Senior Analyst Gwenn Bezard notes that "banks and
their processing partners will be increasingly confronted
with the options of making massive investments to fix
the current paradigm, replacing it with a new one, or
slowly patching together the old paradigm with a leaner
one. Very likely, banks will opt for the latter."

Questions & Answers:
Thoughts on Iron Supplementation
PART 5 of 5

There was no difference in the incidence of antepartum
haemorrhage/operative deliveries, postpartum haemorrhage,
low birthweight, intrauterine growth retardation and
neonatal outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: The study confirms that iron deficiency
anaemia is the most common cause of anaemia in
pregnancy and is a major health problem in developing
and developed countries. Preziosi P, Prual A,
Galan P, Daouda H, Boureima H, Hercberg S. Effect of
iron supplementation on the iron status of pregnant
women: consequences for newborns.

Comment in: Am J Clin Nutr AU: 1997 Nov; 66(5): 1178.
We studied the effect of iron supplementation on the
iron status of mothers and on biochemical iron status
and clinical and anthropometric measures in their infants.
The subjects were 197 pregnant women selected
at 28 wk +/- 21 d of gestation at a mother-and-child health
center in Niamey, Niger. Ninety-nine women received
100 mg elemental Fe/d throughout the remainder of their
pregnancies and 98 received placebo. The prevalence
of anemia and iron deficiency decreased markedly during
the last trimester of pregnancy in the iron-supplemented
group but remained constant in the placebo group. Three
months after delivery, the prevalence of anemia was
significantly higher in the placebo group. At delivery,
there were no differences between the two groups in
cord blood iron variables. Three months after delivery,
serum ferritin concentrations were significantly higher
in infants of women in the iron-supplemented group.
Mean length and Apgar scores were significantly higher
in infants with mothers in the iron group than in those
with mothers in the placebo group.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Will you and Miss Mae be there with me?"

"Of course, my little one. There may be some
times when we have to be away, but that is only
because when you live by higher law you are some
times needed elsewhere. You, too, will one day be
away serving mankind in some way. But for the most
part we would be there with you."

"Then I think it best I live in Sjong Ju.
Those kids there are my age, my nationality and
speak my language. It would be easier for me. And
I am more familiar with customs and things in this
country. Would that be okay?"

"Very wise, Tlang. Very wise."

The meal they had eaten would have been
considered their last meal of the day, supper. The
evening was wearing on.

"I have an idea. Why don't we make ourselves
invisible and 'hover' over the marketplace. I'd
like to see what happens as night comes and the
businesses close up. It would be interesting to
have a birds eye view." Mae was curious about the
activities in a marketplace like this for periods
longer than what she had seen them thus far.

"I think that would be interesting, what do
you say Tlang?"

"That would be okay, I guess. What do you
expect to see?"

"I have no idea Tlang. I just want to watch."
With agreement being unanimous, the three of
them dissapeared. They were immediately hovering
over the market.

The first thing Tlang realized was the
difference in the view. Here, looking down she
could see what several merchants were doing at the
same time. She could see the people moving about
like a colony of ants, busy going here and going
there. She saw people of different nationalities,
different religious faiths and from different
regions in the country. She witnessed the
differences in clothing that was dictated by
peoples work, and she saw the women shopping for
the following days meals. There were kids
everywhere, although Tlang saw very few kids when
she was actually on the ground.

The kids were divided into two classes. There
were those who were with parents and stuck very
close to them, and then there were the "street
kids" who, without parents, roamed the streets.
They lived on scraps the merchants threw out to
them. Sometimes they would steal, but that rarely
paid dividends. The merchants would cry out when
they saw a youngster take something. The kid would
run, but the press of flesh wouldn't allow them to
get very far or very fast. The crowds were the
biggest deterrent to thievery.

Occasionally a kid would run chores for one or
more merchants in return for money, which he/she
would exchange for what they wanted.

Thievery was not common in this country. The
"code" by which all people lived prevented that
kind of behavior.

The street kids were dirty, but there was an
unusual happiness about them. Their "parents" were
the merchants and the hangers on at the
marketplace. The kids had no rules except those
they set for themselves. Every once in a while a
merchant would indeed adopt a child, when the love
relationship could be established. In these cases
the merchant had to respect the child and the
child had to respect the merchant. When that
happened both had company, the merchant a helper
and the youngster a teacher.

Night was falling quickly. The crowds were
thinning out. Out came the kerosene lanterns and
the evening tea. Sales for the merchants began to
slow down and the social aspect of the evening
took over. There was more laughter and less
haggling going on.

The air above the marketplace took on an eerie
appearance. It filled with slowly drifting smoke
from fires used to heat the tea, and from the
black residue drifting from the kerosene
lamps.

The atmosphere in the marketplace changed to
one of kinship, rather than one of business. Yes,
some sales still went on, but the thrust changed
from selling to visiting. This was the only
entertainment some of the merchants had.

These merchants stayed pretty much to a rigid
lifestyle. Many of them were street kids when they
were younger and simply took over the business of
a merchant who had adopted them. These people had
never been more than a block away from the market
in their entire lives. This was all they knew.

Mae, Susan and Tlang continued to hover over
the crowd. They were enjoying the scene. It was
almost like watching a movie.

As night wore on the crowds thinned.
Eventually there was no one left in the market but
some merchants and some kids. Many of the
merchants whose stalls were in buildings were able
to close up shop with steel grate curtains they
rolled down from above. They would lock up and go
to their home wherever that was.

HA! HA! HA!

Two women met for the first time since graduating from
high school. One asked the other, "You were always so
organized in school. Did you manage to live a well planned life?"

"Yes," said her friend, "My first marriage was to a millionaire; my
second marriage was to an actor; my third marriage was to
a preacher; and now I'm married to an undertaker."

Her friend asked, "What do those marriages have to do with
a well planned life?"

"One for the money,
two for the show,
three to get ready,
and four to go!"
