Is it true that pink snow smells like watermelon?
Another strange, but true, fact: pink snow is also called
watermelon snow because those who have seen it say
it smells like watermelon!
What are snow fleas?
"Snow algae" helps feed "snow fleas." No matter how
inhospitable the environment, you'll almost always find
that SOMETHING lives there. Snow fleas are tiny bugs
that swarm in enormous numbers on snow fields where
snow algae is also found. They're not the only ones. Snow
algae also nourishes snow worms, nematodes, and other
cold-loving organisms.

Don't Make Excuses: Make Things Happen
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
You know that your excuses are seldom truthful, often handy
and rarely productive. So, why make them?
It's no surprise that 'Honesty is the best policy!' is so
often quoted. It's the truth. So, why do we not seem to
believe that it applies to the conversations we have with
ourselves?
Would you feel as comfortable offering your excuses to your
employer as you are offering them to yourself? Probably not.
Why? Because your employer is unlikely to buy them and is very
likely to see through them. We don't want our excuses exposed
so we're careful where we proffer them. Somehow, they are
quite acceptable to give to ourselves. We think they are
safety hidden.
Now, does this make sense? Sure. We like to feel we can get
away with things, don't we? Let ourselves off the hook.
Relieve the pressure. Have some downtime. So, what's wrong
with this picture?
PROMISE TO STRETCH NOT OVER-EXTEND
Folks make 'pie-in-the-sky' goals. In a burst of enthusiasm,
commitment to unrealistic goals seems possible. Take off the
rose-colored glasses.
Make goals that cause you to stretch but not goals that cause
you to over-extend. There is a huge difference between these
two. Stretch feels good, you know that you can do it and you
know it is good for you. Over-extension causes stress, fear
and exhaustion.
Stretch increases your capacity slowly. You can sustain your
gains. Over-extension can cause frustration, resentment
and...excuses.
PROMISE WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DELIVER
Ever made a promise that you knew as you spoke you were going
to have a problem delivering? Sure you have. Why did you do
it? There are good reasons for doing so: You want to help
someone in need. You want to work towards a promotion. You
want someone to like you more, approve of you, accept you.
Good reasons.
What happens when you cannot or do not deliver? All those
good reasons are not only negated but you may have lost the
confidence of the folks you wished to serve, please or help.
Not very wise.
What about the promises you make to yourself? You count. In
fact, you count the most. Why? Because you have to live with
you every second. Personally, I believe that the greatest
contributor to lack of self-confidence lies in our failure to
keep our promises to ourselves.
Goal achievement is rooted in keeping your promises to
yourself. Don't let yourself down. You'll soon find that you
are able to keep your careful promises to others easily.
PROMISE NOT TO CUDDLE UP WITH YOUR APOLOGIES
It's also easy to be on friendly terms with our excuses. We
condition ourselves to play it safe. We limit our adventures,
discoveries, interests and risks. When we were children, this
was usually not an issue. We simply 'went for it'.
No, I'm not suggesting throwing caution to the wind. Simply
look at what holds you back. Is it that you are unwilling to
experience even the slightest bit of discomfort or pain? Now,
there's a conundrum. Is it possible to experience change
without a little discomfort? That only happens when you
change from dress shoes to bedroom slippers, or, some kind
person provides you with clean Huggies!
Some folks think that the safe way is to do nothing. Great!
Do you want the results that choosing to do nothing produces?
If so, you are choosing wisely. If not, choose again. Even a
decision to not take action is still taking an action. Be
sure it makes sense for you.
Do you think that cuddling up with your apologies protects
your ego? Nothing ventured, nothing risked = safety? Not so.
It's never too late to try something new. Think you're too
old? Think of Grandma Moses. Think folks will laugh? Who
cares? Think of the value of laughter to them and proceed.
<g> Think you would fall on your face? So what? It's good
exercise to pick yourself up and get going again.
Resist the urge to make excuses that keep you from your
dreams. Don't make excuses. Make things happen!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Question & Answer:
Confused About Vitamins And Minerals,
And Wants To Do Research.
PART 2 of 2
And that opens up another set of questions, because
what we get now in our foods as nutrients, is about half
of what we got twenty years ago. Sunshine is of course
another source. Another way is by parenteral application
such as an intravenous medication. Many people do
what I call piecemeal application. They go to a health
food store or pharmacy and read the information on the
bottle's label or ask a specialist in the store for this
information. Chances are they will get a bottle for one
condition and another bottle for something else. My
personal belief is quite different. I believe the body is a
lot smarter than I am, and will know what it needs, IF I
give it all the required elements I know it has ever needed.
Chances are that if I offer my body a supplement from a
reputable company who specialized in putting all the
right ingredients into a product where I don't have to
guess, my body will not need anything else. But a
caution is in order. This industry is not regulated and
there are many products, which would never pass
any qualifying standards. So be careful what and
where you buy. One vitamin IS NOT like another
vitamin. They are just like chocolate or pop. Just
because the name is the same, does NOT mean
and will not mean that the ingredients are the same.
I can bake good, wholesome bread, and also poor
quality bread, but I am baking bread. This is crucial
to understand as you expect to receive excellent value f
or your investment, and it is an investment in your
health. So don't scrimp on the quality. As I have said
several times here in this column, the American
Medical Association now recognizes the value of
OPTIMUM nutritional supplementation for healthy
bodies. They suggest complete: not piecemeal
supplementation.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The day was wet and raining when they got to
the orphanage. Most of the kids were inside
playing what games they could in the limited
conditions under the roof of the orphanage.
In one corner Amenti was holding "school". He
was helping kids learn to read and write. In
another corner Reno was working with older kids on
some language lessons, bringing them up to speed
with language skills. And in another corner Maria
was working with some kids on the philosophies
behind living by higher law. The occupants were
all busy doing productive things, all in harmony,
all in love, and at peace with one another. It was
a wonderful environment for a child to live in.
That is the first thing Tlang noticed. She
couldn't spell it out or say what it was, but she
liked it here. Without so much as saying good bye
to Mae and Susan, she went directly over to the
group where Amenti was teaching. She sat down,
smiled to everyone and participated as if she had
been there from the beginning.
Mae and Susan went over to Maria's class and,
working with Maria, broke the group into three.
Each adult took on about eight students. They
moved to different areas in the orphanage so they
would not interrupt each other and began to work
with the kids. The greatest emphasis was on the
law "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." They talked and
talked about that law for hours until the kids had
a real sound understanding of all the
ramifications thereof.
Then Mae asked her group if any would like to
visit the village in South America where she has
her home. All eight of her students said yes.
Within an instant they were there.
The day was warm in the village. Mae and the
kids touched down on the beach, right in the
middle of the village kids ball game. The game
came to a short halt and many of the kids came
running up to Mae to say hello. They had not seen
her for months. They equally welcomed the visiting
kids, and before long the game was back on with
the new arrivals playing with them.
Mae walked up to David and Pam's place. Pam
was just preparing a lunch for the family. None of
the kids were there, neither was David. Mae moved
so quietly she surprised Pam.
"Mom!" Pam reacted suddenly. "It's good to see
you. How are you?" Pam came over quickly and gave
Mae a big hug and a kiss. Mae responded equally.
The pair were very glad to see one another.
They sat down and began to talk about all the
things that had happened while Mae was away.
"Grandma!" Little Maz came running up and
hugged his Grandmother. He snuggled into her arms
like in days gone by. He had been out with his
father visiting with Eloise and Mazunta.
David came walking up. "Hi Mom! How are you.
It has been a while. I see you are living well
anyway." David came over and gave his now standing
Mother a hug and a kiss. He was very glad to see
her.
Mae, David and Pam sat and talked over lunch.
They talked and talked until Mae observed her jaw
was getting sore. She had spoken of all the things
that had happened to her since she was last here,
and about the kids she had with her, now playing
on the beach. She thought she might stay for the
fire tonight because the kids would like that.
David and Pam brought Mae up to speed with the
recent events concerning a drug operation moving
in, and about the remains of the tribe that had
moved in here, then moved about five miles down
stream.
All in all, by suppertime they were all caught
up. They did, though, have many interruptions. The
news that Mae was back spread through the village
like wildfire. By the time supper hour arrived
most of the villagers had come over and said "Hi"
to Mae and welcomed her back. She was sure glad
she had come.
The kids had finished their game on the beach
and all went to their respective homes for supper.
One of the older ones escorted the boys and girls
Mae had brought with her to Dave and Pam's place
to reunite with Mae. They were all introduced and
all sat down for some supper that Pam had
manifested for them. They were worn out and happy
from the game. They chattered as if there were no
end to talking.
Mae advised them about the idea of staying for
the fire tonight and all agreed they wanted to
stay.
It began just before the sun went down. It was
going to be a big fire tonight, welcoming Mae back
in their midst. Mae would have a seat of honor up
by Eloise and Mazunta. The kids would join her
there.
The talk was busy around the fire that night.
There was an air of excitement what with Mae
returning. The entire village was pleased with
that because Mae was one of them. This fire was
like the ones they would give one of the men who
had returned from a long hunt, or for some of the
village traders who had just returned from a
trading trip. All were happy.

HA! HA! HA!
My first stop on my vacation was my sister's house in Montana.
She's extremely organized. Before she leaves on a trip, she
always types up address labels for her postcards. This time,
I figured I'd done her one better. I boasted, "You'll be
impressed. I've already written my thank-you notes to
everyone with whom I'll be staying. They're all stamped and
ready to go."
My sister was silent for a moment, and then she said, "You
mean those little envelopes I saw in your room and mailed
this morning?"
