TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is the meaning of firing shots at a military funeral?

Why do naval ships fire cannons when someone dies?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why were the first true human beings called "homo habilis"?

Homo Habilis:  This name literally means "handy man", and
was used because of the evidence of small tools -- hand
axes, and other stone and/or bone tools which they made for
various uses. Of course, it has been recently observed that
man is NOT the only animal which makes or uses tools, for
some of the great apes do, as well.

When did the custom of playing "Taps" at military funerals
begin?

"Taps" started out as a "lights out" song, played at the end
of each day. However, during the Civil War, when Northern
and Southern troops were often camped out pretty close to
each other, officers decided to play "Taps" at funerals
instead of the traditional three-shot salute. The fear was
that the sound of shots being fired might restart fighting.

Microsoft announces Dead.com, er, Live.com Web-based
services

"Microsoft introduced on Tuesday two new
advertising-supported Web services, Windows Live and Office
Live, as a direct response to the formidable challenges
posed by its major competitors, Google and Yahoo," John
Markoff reports for The New York Times.

"The new online initiatives will deliver services to
businesses and consumers directly via the Web, in many
cases, without the need to download the applications to a
computer. As such, they are an important step in extending
Microsoft's reach beyond the desktop PC to smart phones and
other Internet-connected devices," Markoff reports. "The
strategic shift also represents an acknowledgment by the
company, the world's largest software publisher, that the
Internet has once again changed the rules of business,
forcing Microsoft to scramble to catch up."

"Microsoft will have both free and paid offerings on Windows
Live and Office Live, where basic services will be
advertising-supported. The company will then try to entice
or 'upsell' customers to purchase subscriptions for more
advanced and feature-rich services," Markoff reports. "'They
seem to think that the advertising can pay for this stuff,'
said Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research
director for JupiterResearch, a computer industry market
research firm. 'This is much more about an extension of
Office and Windows and not a replacement.'"

"At Tuesday's event, which was marred by several technical
glitches, Microsoft announced the immediate availability of
a test version of its new Internet portal live.com," Markoff
reports. "The company called the service a 'personalized
starting point' for a variety of Web services like e-mail,
instant messaging, and a new set of Internet-based software
called gadgets. These are small Internet-based applications
that provide mail, stock prices, weather forecasts and other
simple functions." Full article here.

CNET Video: At a press event in San Francisco, Chairman Bill
Gates kicks off Microsoft's 'live software' push. He details
the upcoming 'Windows Live' and 'Office Live' products, a
fusion of software and services that are delivered across
the Internet. (Microsoft prohibited video recording of the
product demonstrations.) Video of nothing much more than
Bill Gates droning on during a PowerPoint presentation (4
minutes 48 seconds) here. Nial Kennedy has photos of the
event viz Flickr here.

Paul Thurrott for WinInfo writes of Microsoft's effort, "Few
of these services are startling or original, and all of them
seem to lean a bit heavily on the company's core products.
In many ways, Microsoft's response to the threat of Google,
Yahoo!, and other online entities is somewhat tepid. As with
Netscape a decade earlier, Microsoft will simply leverage
its dominant Windows and Office products to compete in
markets that were innovated by others. In that instance, of
course, Microsoft found itself in legal hot water that
continues to this day. It remains to be seen how various
regulatory bodies--let alone customers--around the world
will view these new services."

Understanding Anxiety And
How It May Affect Your Life
PART 3 of 4

Often, doctors will first look for and address any
psychological factors underlying anxiety. However, these may
not be the entire picture.

Then they may prescribe yet another chemical (drug) and that
just adds to the free radical (enemy) load. So if you are
inclined to help yourself at all, do your own research.

Most of us are well aware that chemicals such as alcohol,
caffeine, and sugar have a quick and real effect on your
body. Your research? Next time you take an alcoholic drink,
have a cup of coffee, or add a generous amount of sugar to
your cereal, THINK as to how you feel about an hour later.

Do you feel better when you cut down or eliminate any or all
of these? Write this down and continue to "monitor"
yourself… Don't change anything, unless you sense it's the
right thing to do. It may also be an interesting project to
study the effects of artificial sweeteners. Read some
research papers and decide for yourself if you would like to
continue to drink diet pop.

Many conditions have "anxiety" as a symptom for which
doctors prescribe drugs. So if you are on any sort of
medications, check out if they add to the chemical load
problem.

The following are also identified as possible medical causes
of anxiety disorders. You won't be able to figure out for
yourself if you are "deficient' in these: they require blood
testing. But if you are slated to go for a comprehensive
physical exam, then ask for this blood work to be done.
These tests should identify deficiencies in niacin,
thiamine, or magnesium, and omega-3 essential fatty acids,
plus low calcium levels and elevated blood lactate levels.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

The ground was shaking. It moved much as if it were a
wave in the water, or a towel blowing in the wind. there was
no question an earthquake had hit, and close.

The kids, who had never experienced such an event, came
running to the back of the orphanage, all with a querying
look on their faces. Riata and Maria soothed them down.

Sam, Tom, Alewka, Amenti and Reno all looked at one
another and in that instant they all left.

The actual center of the quake was out in the ocean. It
developed a tsunami but not a very large one. The land had
moved twenty feet as compared to the piece of land adjacent.

Fortunately there were only a few people living where
the quake did the most damage. In fact the quake did not
much damage for the buildings were not of mortar or ceramic.
They were all huts of the local people.

Odd as it may seem, yet logical, only a few were
damaged. The rest rode out the quake.

Fear was the biggest result of the quake, that and the
new need for water. The quake had shut off traditional
sources of water. Springs that had been running for years
were suddenly drying up. Wells that had been used for
centuries no longer supplied water.

Vast areas were affected. Some had other springs appear,
and in some places water courses were moved to take in new
ground.

Sam had a quick talk with his compatriots and they all
agreed to split up, looking for areas where they could
establish new wells or sources of water.

They split up for as far away as 50 miles in each
direction.

Sam ran into one person who had died because of the
quake. There were none others. By some standards this was a
very small quake, yet if the people did not get water there
could be more fatalities. Sam and the group from the
orphanage took care of that need within hours.

By the time the next day arrived it was as if people
were back to normal, although they were all talking about
the quake.

The group mustered at the agreed upon spot and,
satisfied that all was well, headed back to the orphanage.

They took up sitting right where they were when the
quake hit.

"Well, that was a short and interesting pause. I am glad
it was not a large quake. I am also glad we were all here,
local and responded so quickly. If aftershocks behave
themselves there should be no further difficulty. How about
a cup of coffee all around?" Sam suddenly realized he hadn't
had a cup of coffee for quite a while. He wasn't asking
anyone to get it. He was asking if anyone else wanted any.
He was about to manifest his own.

"I haven't had a coffee in a year, Mr. Henry. I think I
will join you." Maria was the one who spoke up.

Sam immediately zoomed into her thinking to determine
how she liked her coffee and in an instant, handed her a cup
of coffee just the way she liked it. He had one too, and he
handed one to Alewka.

"You two aren't fast enough. You didn't answer me. Tlang
would you like a coffee?"

"No thank you Mr. Henry. I like tea."

In a flash, Sam had a tea in front of her. "Tom?"

"Thanks Dad. I think I'll join you with coffee."

He had barely finished what he was saying when Sam was
offering him a cup filled with coffee the way he liked it.

The group sat around and talked some more.

"This is the first time I have gone to any emergency to
help out mankind. I like it."

"I suspect you have not been called, Amenti, because of
your work here. So long as there are enough adults around so
you can respond I suspect you will get calls more often."

"The kids settle down all right, Riata, Maria?"

"It took them a little while. The concern didn't last
long but their interest and inquisitiveness went on for some
time. In the final analysis they all thought it was neat."

They all laughed.

"Oh to be a kid again. It is only when we get older our
fears begin to cause us trouble. To have the faith of a
child is truly a gift."

"You do, Mr. Henry."

"Yes, Reno. Yet that is after years of practice and
learning. In my early years with higher law I was was not so
confident. I and the family were each finding our way around
and it took some time for that level of confidence to set
in. We had only Sien to aid us through our ignorance. Today
you have a lot of people around you upon whom you can bounce
questions and rely on the answers. Together you can bolster
each others faith. It is not unlike Riata, who, knowingly,
took that bullet. She had no example before her. She stepped
forward in complete faith, knowing all would be well."

"That's right. I never looked at it that way before. All
I saw at the time was a blood soaked beloved woman laying on
the ground motionless. Then her friends, by prearrangement,
came and took her away by ascending into the clouds. It was
that last event that gave cause for the erection of the
shrine. That was the faith of a child. Good work Riata."
Amenti was recalling all the events at the orphanage in
Matto Grosso that surrounded Riata getting shot by the
church appointed and financed shooter.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Abacus: Where did we get the name "abacus" for the counting
device used by the Chinese and others?

The device takes its name from the ancient Phoenician word
abak meaning "dust" - because the mathematicians of that day
used to cover tables with dust in order to draw their
diagrams and figure their problems.

HA! HA! HA!

A young man was smitten by a very lovely young lady.
Unfortunately she did, not return the feeling. In
desperation he went and visited a group of witches searching
for a love potion.

They informed him that they no longer provided such an item.
It was highly unethical to administer a potion to someone
without her permission.

They did have an alternate solution. They sold him a bottle
of small white pellets. He was to bury one in her yard every
night at midnight for a month.

He returned to the witches six weeks later excited and
thankful. He and the young lady were to wed in a month.

The witch told him, . . . "Nothin says lovin' like
something from a coven. And pills buried say it best."
