How did the custom of flying flags at half-mast originate?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is the meaning of firing shots at a military funeral?
Firing three shots at a military funeral is a very old
custom that was once used during battle. The purpose was to
let both sides know that the dead had been cleared off the
battlefield so the fighting and maiming and killing could
begin anew.
Why do naval ships fire cannons when someone dies?
This custom originates in the days when war was supposed to
be a game played fairly and by gentlemen's rules. A ship
that fired a cannon was leaving itself vulnerable to attack
because it left the ship partly unarmed. The message
conveyed by the cannon shot was that the person who died was
important enough to the crew that it was intentionally
placing itself at risk in order to mourn. Any enemy ship in
the vicinity was supposed to back off.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Life Is Like That!
On the very first day, God created the cow. He said to the
cow," Today I have created you! As a cow, you must go to the
field with the farmer all day long. You will work all day
under the sun! I will give you a life span of 50 years." The
cow objected.
"What? This kind of tough life you want me to live for 50
years? Let me have 20 years, and the 30 years I'll give back
to you."
So God agreed. On the second day, God created the monkey. He
said to the monkey, "A monkey has to entertain people.
You've got to make them laugh and do monkey tricks. And I'll
give you a 20 year life span."
The monkey objected. "What? Make them laugh? Do monkey faces
and tricks? Ten years will do, and the other 10 years? I'll
give back to you."
So God agreed. On the third day, God created the dog. God
said to the dog, "What you are supposed to do is to sit all
day by the door of your house. Any people that come by, or
in, you will have to bark at them! I'll give you a life
span of 20 years!"
The dog objected. "What? All day long I have to sit by the
door? No way! Let me live for only ten years. I give you
back my other 10 years of life!"
So God agreed. On the fourth day, God created man and said
to him, "Your job is to sleep, eat, and play. You will enjoy
very much in your life. All you need to do is to enjoy and
do nothing. For this kind of life, I'll give you a 20-year
life span."
The man objected. "What? Such a good life! Eat, sleep, do
nothing? Enjoy the best and you expect me to live for only
20 years? No way, man! Why don't we make a deal? Since Cow
gave you back 30 years, Dog gave you back 10 years, and
Monkey gave you back 10 years, I will take them from you!
That makes my life span 70 years, right?"
So God agreed.
AND THAT IS WHY: In our first 20 years we eat, sleep, play,
and enjoy the best and do nothing much. For the next 30
years, we work all day long, suffer and get to support the
family. For the next 10 years, we entertain our
grandchildren by making monkey faces and doing monkey
tricks. And for the last 10 years, we stay at home, sit in
front of the door and bark at people.
I've spent years trying to figure out why life follows that
pattern. Now I know. It always takes some joker to come
along and let us have the funny version. Yet, as with all
jokes there is an underlying truth for folks to look at.
While this may be far from the reason life is like that
there are reasons to look at life like that. These are the
"seasons" so to speak, of what life is like.
We have the knowledge, the intellect and the power of
observation to know and understand we will, each of us, go
through these "seasons".
So now we must make a choice. We can, by choice, make each
season a joy, or we can make each season terrible. We can,
by choice, impart that joy to others or we can make life
miserable for others. We can, by choice, have fun, enjoy all
of life and contribute happiness to others or we can, by
choice, have others wish they were nowhere near us.
What choices are you making, everyday when you awake. What
kind of a day are you deciding to have, the moment you open
your eyes.
I have learned, in my long years, those choices are ours to
make. For the young among you heed well. For the old among
you, understand we can all be like Scrooge when he awoke
from his third dream. If you recall, he rejoiced at learning
the lesson of giving. He thereupon danced and sang about the
streets and gave where he never gave before, simply for the
pure joy of it.
While life takes us through "seasons" it is our choice how
terrible or wonderful those "seasons" will be.
Life Is Like That!

Understanding Anxiety And
How It May Affect Your Life
PART 4 of 4
Otherwise if you would like to make some changes: if you are
not happy with your present situation, if you feel very
anxious and can't figure out the obvious causes, do some
checking on yourself.
Cut out some things such as sugars reduce the amount of
caffeine, avoid alcohol, quit smoking
do something that
changes the chemical make-up of your body.
The operative word here is "your": it is not your doctor's
or your spouse's, or your friend's. Only after you have
tried to determine your own problems, should you go to the
doctor. Then with their help, undergo some blood testing.
And try to avoid the popular pastime of treating yourself to
an assortment of vitamins and minerals. If you going to try
these products, which have been known to help many
conditions, get some decent ones. Pay for quality. Get only
complete and balanced products that restore your entire
nutrient requirements.
You will be quite amazed how good and hopeful you feel, and
how quickly you loose these feelings of apprehension or
uneasiness. What is so exciting, is to see the personality
changes once you discover that a few changes in your
lifestyle take away so many hopeless moments. So find out
why you feel anxious and choose to take back control of your
health. It may need just a small adjustment and life can be
wonderful again!

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

----------------
There was a long silence as everyone finally absorbed
the significance of what Riata had done. Even though they
all lived by higher law they had not realized the power of
that decision Riata made so long ago. None, until now,
looked at how that act is helping people in a big way even
now as the lines keep moving toward the shrine.
To commit her life for her beliefs, that others may
benefit, was quite a sacrifice. She knew she would be okay,
or at least that was her hope, but still, to stand there and
knowingly take a bullet you knew was coming. Few have done
that.
The silence prevailed. Then, one by one they came over
to Riata and gave her a hug. It suddenly dawned on everyone
this was a woman among women, that she was far greater than
anyone had given credit.
Riata, naturally, did not want this kind of credit. It
was enough for her to have done the good deed. She was
blushing.
"Fear not, Riata, it is just us who have come to the
realization of what a wonderful thing you did. You are a
brilliant example of what trust in your Maker can
accomplish. That is good. Moreover, it is good others
realize. It does them good to know they have such an
outstanding example in front of them. Let it happen."
"Sam, I know. It is just that the real truth of the
matter is I was scared to death. I am not so sure this
credit is deserved."
"Oh! Yes it is young lady. Scared or not you paid no
attention to your fears, at least you let wisdom control you
and not your fears. Look now at the results of your
decision. I would say you have and are still helping
thousands. The shrine is aiding hundreds and thousands.
Still, today, there is a never ending line. Since you
committed yourself to that shot there has been a never
ending line up of people coming to the shrine because they
believe they can be helped. And they are being helped. That
was over eight years ago now. Think of all the people that
has helped. It is like David's statue in Pinehill. He has no
idea of how many people that is helping. It is an enormous
number. You are worth every credit you receive and I am
proud of you preferring still to do as the law says."
There was a cheer went up and clapping of hands. All the
kids turned from what they were doing and looked.
Tom, who has seen the shrine, and Tlang, who has not,
were both among those who came to realize just who Riata
was. Tlang was learning new things about the people around
her, every day. That Riata could do such a thing impressed
her mind indelibly. She knew both Mae and Susan knew of
Riata's deeds. She wondered why these people didn't talk of
such things. They were good examples to follow. Then she
"knew" for Sam sent her some thoughts. "Tlang, we do not
speak of these things because we do not want any credit for
ourselves. We do not do these things so we can be seen as
miracle workers. We do them to help others and that is the
sole motivation. To take credit is to belittle our act. It
is our practice to do the good deed and then disappear
before anyone can thank us. We do not do things for our
sake, but for others. Have you ever noticed Mae and Susan
doing good deeds for people? They do not stick around for
any glory do they? They prefer to leave immediately, right?"
Tlang looked at Sam, and nodded her head in agreement.
"Tlang," Alewka spoke, "we have been given the greatest
gift mankind can receive. Those to whom much is given, much
is expected. When you can have anything in the world you
want, why would you want the illusionary and fleeting,
valueless and un-supportive thing as fame? No, Tlang, we do
not do things that we might be well thought of. We want no
applause. We want no accolades. It is our duty to do these
things and we need no thanks for doing our duty. We have
been given our thanks by our Maker long ago. As your days in
higher law increase you will know this."
"I see it now. I just did not wholly understand the law
and the thinking behind it. It just seemed to me Riata is a
good example for all of us to follow. Yet if we know not
what she did we know not the example."
"Everything in season, dear. Everything in season."
"Mrs. Henry, my heart is so full of gratitude for having
learned higher law and for having come into the company of
all present here, I am humbled and constantly appreciative.
That you take time to work with me is also an humbling
experience for me. Thank you, all of you. Thank you."
Alewka went over to Tlang and gave her a big hug. "This
time and attention is given to someone we love, Tlang. Thank
you for making the decision to live by higher law. You, of
all people could have gone in a far different direction."
"There was a reason for my hard beginnings, Mrs. Henry.
I have not yet found out what they are but I know that
training was needed for me. I will one day use that
experience to help others. I am not complaining but rather i
am appreciative for it. All things happen for good for those
who trust their Maker."
"Out of the mouthes of babes! I continually am surprised
at the depth of wisdom you have, my dear." Alewka looked at
Sam. They both knew this young woman was slated to do great
things one day.
Sam and Alewka were not alone in that thought. The
others saw what was happening to Tlang on nearly a daily
basis. Her maturity in the law was advancing rapidly. They
all returned to the silence, with grateful hearts.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Yankee Dime: Why do we call a kiss a "yankee dime"?
This name for a kiss has its origin in our habit of
attributing to other sections of the country such behavior
and characteristics as we do not especially approve of.
"Yankees" were said to be so thrifty that they would rather
pay for something with a kiss than with a "coin". A kiss is
also called a "Quaker fip" (that is a five cent piece) for
the sam reason.

HA! HA! HA!
A woman was out golfing one day when she hit the ball into
the woods. She went in to look for it and found a frog in a
trap. The frog said to her, "If you release me from this
trap, I will grant you three wishes."
The woman freed the frog, and the frog said, "Thank you, but
I failed to mention that there was a condition to your
wishes. Whatever you wish for, your husband will get times
ten."
The woman said, "That's okay." and for her first wish, she
wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog
warned her, "You do realize that this wish will also make
your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis
whom women will flock to. "
The woman replied, "That's okay, because I will be the most
beautiful woman and he will have eyes only for me." So,
KAZAM! she's the most beautiful woman in the world.
For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in
the world. The frog said, "That will make your husband the
richest man in the world and he will be ten times richer
than you."
The woman said, "That's okay, because what's mine is his and
what's his is mine." So, KAZAM! she's the richest woman in
the world.
The frog then inquired about her third wish, and she
answered, "I'd like a mild heart attack."
ADDITIONAL: But wait! There's more...
The man actually had a heart attack ten times MILDER than
his wife. Duh.
