What is nirvana?

What does the word "Islam" mean?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Do Muslims have a Sabbath?

Muslims believe that God never needs to rest, so they don't
celebrate Sabbath in the same way that Christians and Jews
do. They do celebrate "Yawm-Al-Jumau'ah," which literally
means "the day of congregation." On this day, celebrated
every Friday, Muslims go the local mosque to hear a sermon
and pray as a group.

Why is the fish a symbol associated with Christianity?

The Greek word for "fish" is "ichthys" and those letters are
understood in the modern era as an acronym for the phrase
"Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" (Iesous CHristos, THeou
HYios, Soter). Jesus was also associated with fishermen and
his apostles were known as "fishers of men." During the
period when Christians were widely persecuted, Christians
used the sign of a fish to secretly identify themselves to
one another without alerting hostile authorities.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

The World Is A Changin'!

As a professor at Texas A & M, I taught during the day and
did research at night. I would usually take a break around
nine, however, calling up the strategy game Warcraft on the
Internet and playing with an on-line team.

One night I was paired with a veteran of the game who was a
master strategist. With him at the helm, our troops crushed
opponent after opponent, and after six games we were
undefeated. Suddenly my fearless leader informed me his mom
wanted him to go to bed.

"How old are you?" I typed.

"Twelve," he replied. "How old are you?"

Feeling my face redden, I answered, "Eight."

I'm not sure the telephone, the radio, the airplane or the
automobile had as much influence on changing the world as
has the computer.

The joke above is far too realistic to be a joke. That is
the kind of thing that happens when you give a kid a
computer.

I think that is good. I think it is developing children's
ability to think, although the influence of war games and
the like may be like "reality" shows on T.V.

What concerns a lot of us is not, I suspect, any notion that
children's appetite for computers is bad. I think our
concern may be based on our inability to keep up and
therefore lose control.

Such notions are perfectly natural. It is human instinct. If
you have been following The Saga of Pinehill you will
realize that is one of the points Eloise makes once in a
while. She often refers to conditions where the church feels
it is losing control of it's congregation and reacts by
trying to further control them.

I ask you to go back to when you were a teen and your folks
were concerned about you doing things "they would never
dream of". You, too, put pressure on the system, and your
folks. You, too, forced evolution, as these kids are today.

It has been pointed out that many things have come from such
movement. In the overall these things are good, even if they
sometimes come wrapped up with some things that appear
distasteful.

I have found a good defense is to consciously think these
things are good, then sit back and watch the results. Where
such things affect you, personally, or your family in ways
that really aren't good, then you can step in. Until then,
don't get in the way of change. It brings many benefits.

To Be Vaccinated Or Not To Be Vaccinated
Do Some Serious Deliberation Before
You Offer Your Arm
PART 3 of 15

So ultimately how would this vaccination prevent the flu? It
allows your immune system to build up its defense army in
case of exposure. By giving it tiny bits of a potential flu
virus, it recognizes it as an enemy and has the army ready
to overpower it. It means that while your body is incubating
the virus, it is already repelling it.

This virus affects about 30% of a "population. That means
30% of your associates could get the flu. It means that 30%
of the work won't get done or will not be done as
efficiently as planned. It means 30% of your coworkers will
become "incubators" for a short while. Can you see why
prevention is very important? But prevention doesn’t
necessarily mean vaccination. I’ll share other preventative
measures you can do later in this article. If you think of
how the virus is passed along, and can understand the logic
of closing that method of transmission, you may have the
answer to not getting ill.

While not everyone needs the vaccination, people who are
considered “high risk”, would be well advised to get this
vaccine. There are arguments against having this
vaccination, so be informed. If you don't need it, don't do
it, but if you do need it, then do it. But don’t fall for
the argument that age is a high risk indicator. I know many
people in their 70’s and 80’s who are very healthy and
wouldn’t consider getting a flu shot. More power to them.
That is good thinking!

Before we go any further, let me explain what you are you
being vaccinated against. Have you ever wondered who makes
these decisions? Jointly, the World Health Organization and
individual countries determine the viruses that will be
targeted for immunization. Influenza is caused by a group
of viruses divided into three classes: A, B or C. Influenza
strains A and B are the major causes of severe illness and
death related to the flu. Any strains of viruses may mutate
(change) from one year to the next. This is why flu
outbreaks are a yearly event. Immunity to last year’s flu
does not protect you from this year’s new strains.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

As the two finally came walking back to the back of the
orphanage Sam and Alewka got out of their chairs and came
running. They each gave Tim a big hug, "Congratulations,
Son, way to go. Sharon just told us the news. Very good."

Tom stood back and watched all this with a big smile on
his face. The idea of new life in the family pleased him
very much. Obviously it pleased his Mom and Dad, too.

Tim blushed a little and when he could he walked up to
Sharon and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "See, I told yo
they would be happy."

The pair of them stood as others came up to congratulate
them.

The boys had been away for quite some time. It was
actually time enough for Sharon and Tlang to go for a walk
also. Sharon had filled Tlang in on how tough it gets and
and how hard it is to control one's feelings when all alone
with the one you love.

Tlang was happy, overjoyed, that Sharon would take this
time to talk with her on a situation so close and personal.
That this family cared about each other and helped each
other was both amazing and wonderful. It endeared Tlang to
Sharon and to the entire family.

The others sitting and partaking in the conversation
continued to do so. They were oblivious as to the fact they
just witnessed how the Henry family all cared for and looked
out for one another.

Sam and Alewka sat back a just watched their offspring
and their mates. They both knew what had just happened when
the guys went for a walk and the gals went for a walk. It
pleased them that each cared enough for the other they would
get into such important topics, trying to help one another.
It didn't surprise them but it sure made them happy.

"To thine own self be true ..." were words of wisdom
from Shakespeare. Sam knew them to be absolutely true and
should be employed in every life. It does not mean one buys
all the toys for oneself first, that is nonsense and crap.
What it does mean is that one is to be true to his
philosophy, his person, his inner calling, first, then one
can be of help to others. That saying can spread to families
as well as individuals and Sam was pleased to see his
children and their mates practice that.

When all the fuss settled down there were a host of
questions as to when the baby was due, had the kids told
Sharon's folks, where were they going to live, what were
they going to name the baby? All these questions went on for
hours. While it might have looked, on paper, like an
inquisition it was not. It was really the genuine interest
and caring of those close comrades and they were keen on
knowing it all.

Sam had sent a message to Eloise and Mazunta about the
news. Within minutes Eloise and Maz were standing there in
the middle of the group.

Again there was a flurry of activity as they were
welcomed, and as they asked their questions.

It was wonderful to have all the family together at a
time like this when they all shared in such good tidings.

"Riata, Maria, Amenti, Reno, this is a wonderful
orphanage. You have done well here. I like it. Well done."
Eloise was complimenting them on the job they were doing.

Such compliments meant a lot coming from Eloise. She was
appreciated as the "Grand Old Lady" among them. Everyone
knew it was Eloise who started all this and in some way,
directly or indirectly all of their lives had some
beneficial impact from Eloise. She was loved dearly.

Maz was being appraise from afar by a lot of the kids.
This was the second time they had seen him. He was such a
tall strapping man and in his offering of love was a magnet
to all the young, that they were looking him over more
closely as he took part in the conversation. Many of the
kids were consciously observing this man as the example they
wanted to follow. Others were picking Sam and the girls were
picking Alewka, Sharon and Eloise.

Some were wise enough to realize Riata, Maria, Amenti
and Reno were the same. It was just that the kids saw these
people everyday and did not consciously think of them in
that way. It would take years into adulthood before they
would be appreciated for who and what they were. That's
just the nature of life. Another good reason why a parent
should not seek appreciation from their offspring. It will
come naturally, in time, to the parent who has a keen
understanding that a child will forgive anything except
unfairness.

So, rather than die down, the conversation kept getting
more lively. There was so much to talk about and catch up
on, they were even speaking in animated fashion. It was good
to be here and be part of this group.

Suppertime came and went. The kids built a fire and kept
it going. Everyone moved to the fire and the conversations
kept going. The kids gathered in close to hear as much as
they could. Like all kids in such circumstances they loved
what was happening. They liked to sit and listen to the
adults.

For their part, each adult was aware of this and kept
the conversation going in directions that would be of value
to the kids. They were reminiscing and talking of past
events. They were speaking of personal things. They were
speaking of things that happened at the orphanage in Matto
Grosso, of life in Eloise's and Maz's village, of marriage,
of having and raising kids, of love and of higher law.

Not one of the children missed one word. They absorbed
like sponges. They were learning from the examples before
them, how to behave and conduct themselves.

It is no wonder these fires were such an important part
of orphanage life. These nightly fires were what contribute
so much to the learning of the children, without the direct
teacher/student interchange. The things the kids learned at
the fires were the things they wanted to learn and interest
was high.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Gamut: Why do we say a person "runs the gamut" of emotions?

Because "gamma" represented the last not on Guido d"Arezzo's
musical scale and "ut" represented the first note used in
his singing scale. So, to "run the gamut" has come to mean
to run the entire scale of emotions - no matter how
represented.
