thePEBBLE - 11/12/05 - Big Corporations Don't Care?
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.
The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.
I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.
Jerry Harlton
Jerry Harlton was an executive assistant to the Right
Honourable Joe Clark, the former Prime Minister of Canada
It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think
outside the box".

Big Corporations Don't Care?
A guy got a credit card bill stating that he owed $0.00. He
ignored it and threw it away.. Next month he got another,
did the same thing. The next month they sent him a very
nasty note stating they were going to cancel his credit card
if he didn't send them $0.00. He called them, talked to
them, they said it was "a glitch" and told him they'd take
care of it.
The following month he tried to charge something and
couldn't. He called the credit card company who again said
they'd take care of it. The next day he got his bill for
$0.00 stating that he was very delinquent. The man figured
the credit card company would take care of it, so he didn't
worry. The next month he got a bill for $0.00 stating that
he had 10 days to pay or his account was going to
collection. He mailed the credit card company a check for
$0.00, and the credit card company's computer processed it,
noting that his account was now paid in full.
A week later, the man's bank called him asking him what he
was doing writing a check for $0.00. He explained and they
said, "Well, your $0.00 check has caused our check
processing software to fail. We now can't process ANY of our
checks from that day electronically because that $0.00 check
has caused the program to abort. We are closing your account
with us ! "
The man, who had been considering buying his wife a computer
for her birthday, bought her a typewriter instead.
Amusing isn't it, yet oh, so sad.
We have all had experiences like this and, I am sure, been
frustrated right down to our core with this kind of
response.
Big corporations and governments become so large as to be
unwieldy. When this happens they set up policies to control
the company and the people who staff the company now hide
behind these policies.
It does not seem to matter how obvious a problem is nor how
much a person's common sense can see it. They will hide
behind policy and take no personal responsibility for
getting an obvious glitch corrected.
Not all big companies are riddled with problems. The
problems arise when people aren't willing to take
responsibility for their actions. It is the people that
staff those big corporations and government that create the
problem. Don't be afraid to go over a person's head to get
matters resolved. I have gone as far as the president of a
corporation on some issues. It helps.

To Be Vaccinated Or Not To Be Vaccinated
Do Some Serious Deliberation Before
You Offer Your Arm
PART 7 of 15
Children and adolescents (3 years to 18 years) are
considered high risk if they have conditions that have been
treated with aspirin for long periods of time. Aspirin used
after a flu vaccination in this age group may increase risk
of Reyes Syndrome. If your child needs pain medicine after a
flu shot, please contact your doctor for further directions.
I work with nurses who routinely tell people to take a pain
killer during the next 48 hours. I choose not to do that. I
feel most people can manage a bit of discomfort.
For some high-risk patients, although they may not be
totally free from the flu symptoms, the vaccine can be
effective in preventing lower-respiratory-tract involvement
or other secondary complications. This often reduces the
need for hospitalization or the risk of death.
Your household may have people who are considered high
risk (including children) and who either cannot be
vaccinated or may not respond adequately to vaccination
(through their physical limitations). The caregivers should
still get vaccinated. Again, this vaccination may reduce the
risk of exposure to influenza for everyone. Our goal is to
reduce the spread and limit inconvenience or suffering to as
many people as possible.
Now that you understand the concept behind flu shots, let's
suppose you have decided to make use of this vaccination
offer at work or school. Arrangements for a convenient time
and location will be made between your company and a nursing
organization. A registered nurse, like me, will come at this
prearranged time and bring all the required supplies. The
only two things you are responsible for is to complete a
consent form and bring your body. And it would be greatly
appreciated (by the people waiting behind you) if you could
wear a short, loose-fitting blouse or shirt. Otherwise you
will be asked to remove your arm from that shirt or dress.
That is a real nuisance and it is time-consuming. If your
office has a casual Friday dress code that might be a good
time to book the clinic. I recall one huge government office
where we had all these very professional looking men and
women in different states of undress as they prepared and
completed their vaccinations. In fact, that was my
introduction to these clinics and I vowed to ask people to
dress appropriately when I called to confirm the clinics. In
most a cases, it has worked like a charm!

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

The morning dawned bright and beautiful. Yet not one in
the monastery knew that. As each awoke they stirred little
and, seeing others were not yet awake, they waited until it
was clear all were ready to rise.
"Good morning all. I trust you slept well." Sien greeted
them as they came out of their rooms.
"Like a baby, Sien, like a baby." Tom responded for all
of them.
"Come, let's have a bite to start the day. I'll show you
around the rest of the place after breakfast."
They all headed into the large room where they ate their
meal last night. It was busier today, and emptier.
"This is a typical day for us. Most of our members have
gone to do the work. Some of those you see are just returned
and will turn in to get some rest. Others are preparing to
leave."
"One thing I have noticed with this work, Sien, there
are no weekends."
Sien laughed. Then it hit everyone else. All laughed.
"You're right, Tim. There are no weekends, no holidays,
no special reasons for taking time off. Funny, huh? Weekends
and special holidays are a function of man and his work week
concept. Those that are not, are imposed upon us by
religion. In our Maker's world there is no such thing. We
are all always at rest, until or unless we are needed to
help out man in some kind of issue. The sun comes up and
goes down only if you are situated in one place long enough
to notice that. If you move about the earth as we do, then
there is no measurement of time, neither need there be."
"That's a hard concept for man to grasp, I bet."
"Yes, it is. Man only knows he must work for money so he
can survive. That is the way the establishment wants him to
think. The vast majority see no other way, neither are they
willing to look. They measure days, hours, minutes, seconds.
Everything must have a name, a place, a time, a pigeon
hole. Man has trained himself to be quite uncomfortable if
he has no name for things. He even accepts disease once he
has put a name to it. Too few consider there is no need for
any of that. They fail to live in the moment. They fail to
realize that contained within the moment is all of time, all
of learning, all that is."
"I think you are likely referring to North American man
or that group of men and women in the world who live in big
cities and go to jobs. Surely there are those who live close
to the land, who are not so dependent upon the clock but
rather the rhythms of nature who are close to grasping this
concept?"
"You are right Tim. People in rural settings have a
tendency to live by the events of nature. And you are right
again if you are saying that some people in rural settings
have no need for special days or events. True they may come
along but for the most part the clock forms no part of their
daily, weekly, monthly or yearly lives. In fact many of them
count not the weeks, months, years. You are right."
They concluded their breakfast and left the large room.
Sien found his way to another hidden staircase, this time in
a location that was not similar to the first two. This one
was on an inside wall in the darkest of corners, behind a
rock wall that had a huge flat rock in it that turned on a
center piece. The rock had to be six feet wide and a foot
thick. Somewhere on the bottom centre and at the top centre
were pins of some sort that allowed the rock to turn. If you
pushed gently on the furthest outside part the wall would
turn on this pivot according to the way you pushed. If you
stood back and looked at the bottom of the rock you would
not be able to see any crack under it. The only crack one
might see around the rock door was one right in the very
corner of the room and that would be assumed to be the
corner where they rock was placed. The entire thing was
ingenious.
They all walked past the door into a room in which there
was a visible staircase. Sien now pushed on the other side
of the door, closing it. Something rather unique about this
door is that it made no noise, neither was is hard to push.
It was set up so that pushing on it with a cigarette paper
would move the door. It was an engineering marvel and like
the window that looked like nothing more than a small crack
in the rock was just another of the things within this
facility that would confound man.
"Why the fancy door?"
"Mazunta, you know and I know that if man found this
place there would be men, government, special interest
groups all over it. We have permitted access to the first
level. We have set things up so that if man finds it then we
will disguise the first stairwell. It will take man years to
find it. Then, should he eventually be successful he will
gain access to the second level. Again we can and will cause
the stairwell to be disguised or hidden from his view and
his searching. He will think he has found all there is to
see in this place. However, should he get past the illusion
and attain the second stairwell to this floor that will be
the end to his journey. We have caused this door to look
just like the wall that adjoins it. We can seal and lock it
and we can and will cause a shield to be placed over it such
that man will not ever be able to see it. As you know the
floors here are ten feet thick. We can do whatever we want
on the floor above and no one will hear it here. There are
two floors above us and we could live quite successfully
there if man were to discover our facility."
"Are you sure man will not find it?"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Halloween: How did "Halloween" come to be so called?
The old Celtic calendar began on November 1st and therefore,
October 31st was New Year's Eve - the night on which witches
and hobgoblins rode about for one last fling. With the
introduction of Christianity the old New Year's Day became
"All Saints' Day"; and the evening before became "All
Saints' Eve" or "all Hallows' E'en." Though the name was
changed, the customs and the belief that witches rode on
this night - persisted and have come down to this day.

HA! HA! HA!
How to Know When Foods are Finished:
FREEZER FOODS:
ICE CREAM - If you can't tell the difference between your
ice cubes and your ice cream, it's time to throw BOTH out.
FROZEN FOODS: - Frozen foods that have become an integral
part of the defrosting problem in your freezer compartment
will probably be spoiled (or wrecked anyway) by the time you
pry them out with a kitchen knife.
IN THE FRIDGE:
EGGS - When something starts pecking its way out of the
shell, the egg is probably past its prime.
DAIRY PRODUCTS: - Milk is spoiled when it starts to look
like yogurt. Yogurt is spoiled when it starts to look like
cottage cheese. Cottage Cheese is
spoiled when it starts to look like regular cheese. Regular
cheese is nothing but spoiled milk anyway - if you can dig
down and still find something non-green, bon appetite.
MEAT - If opening the refrigerator causes stray animals from
a three block radius to congregate outside your house, toss
the meat.
UNMARKED ITEMS - You know it is well beyond prime when
you've tempted to
discard the Tupperware along with food. EMPTY.
ON THE SHELF:
CANNED GOODS: Any canned goods that have become the size or
shape of a softball should be disposed of...Very carefully.
POTATOES: Fresh potatoes do not have roots, branches, or
dense, leafy undergrowth.
CEREAL: It is generally a good rule of thumb that cereal
should be discarded when it is two years or longer beyond
the expiration date, or when it will no longer fall out of
the box itself.
FLOUR: Flour is spoiled when it wiggles, or things fly out
when you open it.
RAISINS: Raisins should not usually be harder than your
teeth.
