What did the cat who won the medal do?

"Simon," the lone cat to be awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal,
courageously battled rats (who were eating precious rations)
and lifted the morale of sailors held captive aboard the HMS
Amethyst. The ship was surrounded on all sides by enemy
forces during the civil war between the Chinese Communists
under Mao Tse-tung and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists. Simon
and his shipmates eventually escaped, but Simon died shortly
afterward. Some suggested he had a weak heart and that the
wounds he suffered during the initial attack of the ship
combined with his frequent battles with large rats had done
him in. His shipmates suggested instead that he died of a
broken heart, having been separated after the incident from
his beloved shipmates.

Do St. Bernards really carry those little brandy casks on
their collars to rescue people in the snow?

Yes. At least at one time, anyway. In fact, the St. Bernard
gets its name from an Italian churchman named Bernard who
bred the dogs to work as rescue dogs in the Alps.

The Art Of Questioning Yourself Well

Have you ever heard someone say, "I'll just have to accept
my fate"? I'll bet you have. Did you find it an empowering
thing to hear? Of course, there are several possible
interpretations of the remark. It could mean that the person
believes they have done everything in their power to bring
about the outcome they desire. Then they are willing to
accept their fate. On the other extreme, it could mean, "I
have no control at all. I'll have to take what life hands
out to me." It is the latter that saddens me. How about you?

We all ask ourselves a lot of questions, don't we? What is
the quality of the questions you ask yourself? Do you say
things like, "Why me? Why does this always happen to me?"
or "Why did she say that?" or "What did I do wrong?" These
are not high quality questions.

High-quality questions move you forward immediately. They
focus on positive direction and indicate an understanding of
what's possible. Here are a few: "How can I turn this
around?" or "How can I make it work?" "How can I utilize
this?" or "How can I use this to empower myself and others?"
The answers to these questions increase your personal power
and your power to change the world around you.

The quality of your life can relate directly to the quality
of the questions you ask yourself. Albert Einstein said,
"The important thing is to not stop questioning." What kind
of questions do you wrestle with? There are many ways to ask
the question, "What now?", aren't there? It can be very
positive and possibility oriented, or, it can be negative,
anticipating another problem. It is often not just the words
you choose but the intention behind them. Be careful. This
will take some practice for those of you who know that your
questioning could use a quality adjustment!

Keep a small book handy and make a note of the typical
questions you ask yourself during the day. Do they move you
forward or do they reinforce your sense of powerlessness?
When a question shows up in your head, deliberately re-state
it as a high-quality question. This habit will change your
view of life quickly.

The Inflammatory Process
A Special Gift From Nature To You
PART 3 of 12

Before I give you some definitions of the inflammatory
process, let me give you a ridiculous example, but it
illustrates the idea very clearly. Suppose you put your hand
on a hot element on your stove. Your body acts instinctively
to remove your hand from the harmful effects of that heat.
That is how quickly your body reacts. Despite your
“foolishness”, your body has already started the healing
process. Not only has it sprung into action and removed your
hand from further harm. It has also started to bring
together a lot of other properties to help heal the damage
underway. Did you make any decisions to help in the process?
No. You had no chance and no choice. All you did was put
your hand on the burner.

Let’s look at some definitions of this action. Mosby’s and
the Medline Encyclopedia offer these explanations about the
inflammatory process, inflammation, and infection. The
inflammatory process is the protective response of the
body’s tissues to irritation or injury: may be acute or
chronic. The severity, timing, and local characteristics of
any particular inflammatory response depend on the cause,
the area affected and the condition of the host. (Please
remember this sentence). Histamine and various other
substances “mediate” the inflammatory process…example:
inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s and ulcerative
colitis.

“Inflammation” is a process that brings blood and white
cells to the injured or irritated area. It is characterized
by heat, swelling, redness, and pain. It is the tissue
reaction of the injury, direct or indirect. “Infection” is
the invasion and multiplication of any organism and the
damage caused by this in the body. “Inflammatory response”
is tissue reaction to injury and or an antigen. The
response may include pain, swelling, itching, redness, heat,
loss of function, or a combination of symptoms. There may be
dilation of the blood vessels leakage of fluid to the
vessels, causing edema (swelling).

An important point to remember is that just as the fluid and
other elements are activated, so they subside once their job
is done. Also all functions resume their normal activities.
The crisis is over and life becomes normal once again.
However, there are times when this process will not subside
but carry on for long time. It is felt that this leads into
oxidative stress. This is a condition that resembles your
body rusting out in certain areas. There is a lot of
research underway related to this concept.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to
http://www.the-pebble.com OR order yours from
your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

The woman turned around to face him. She was full of
confidence and was making him feel as if he was loved. He
did not understand what was happening.
She spoke with authority and called him by name. How
could she do this? She had not ever seen him before.

She spoke softly, gently, yet firmly. He dropped the
stick he used as a pretend gun. The man turned around, ashen
faced and fearful. He was very scared and it passed into
Miguele.

This woman saw that and doubled her efforts at sending
love unto him. He began to sob and went to his hands and
knees. What was going to happen to him now? He would be
turned over to the law and his children would never get
anything to eat. What kind of a Father was he? What kind of
a husband was he, to leave his wife with this problem while
he was in jail?

All these things raced through Miguele's mind. He knew
not where to turn. Something strange was happening. He found
he couldn't run either. In fact he found he wanted to stay
there. What was going on?

"Rise up, Miguele. Your family is fine. Your girls are
each healthy and there is lots of food in your house. Go
home and enjoy your family. All is well."

How could this woman make this statement? What did she
know about his family? How did she know his girls were sick
and what did she mean there was lots of food in the house?

He looked into her eyes. From that instant he was lost
to her words. What she said he believed. Even he was feeling
young and healthy. This woman spoke with an authority he had
never heard from anyone before. He knew she meant every word
she spoke. Somehow, inside him he believed there was lots of
food at home. He bent over again and was going to go down
and kiss her feet. She stopped him. "Go, Miguele. All is
well."

What? She was letting him go, too. She was not calling
the police? All this and there was food at home?

Miguele looked once more into her eyes. He knew.

"Thank you Missy." He turned and ran all the way home.
This time it took him only a half hour.

He rushed into the house yelling " Abetta, Momma . . ."
He couldn't believe his eyes. The house had been cleaned
super clean. There were lights burning in the sockets. The
girls were seated at the table eating a very large meal that
had been placed in front of them. Each of them looked as if
they were the healthiest girls in earth. Abetta had a smile
on her face she couldn't wipe off.

"I've been looking for you. A couple hours after you
left there was a bright light came into the house. I don't
know what it was. It was offering love. I wasn't scared. The
girls embraced it. Suddenly the house was all cleaned up and
the paint was new. There was lots of food left on the
cupboard and when I went to put some of it away there was no
room in the cupboards. They were full too. I called you and
you didn't come. What happened to you? You look fat and
healthy. You don't look like the same man who left here."

Miguele told her the story of what went on. She couldn't
understand it any more than he could. Both of them went to
their knees in prayers of gratitude. This was a miracle if
ever they had seen or heard of one. They cried, together,
the girls too.

Miguele knew, in his heart, that all things were going
to be well. He had no idea why he would think that but he
felt, deeply, this was not just a short term miracle that
would give them this food for a week and then they would be
back in the same boat they were in before.
He confessed his thoughts to Abetta. She, too, confirmed
his thoughts with feelings of her own. "What is happening
Miguele. Why us? What is this?"

"I don't know, Momma. I only know this is something
special. We not only have this food but I think there is
more to the miracle. We will just have to wait and see. The
woman I met was a very strong woman. She knew I had two
girls at home and she knew they were sick. She knew we had
no food. She just told me to to go home that all would be
well, and look." He swung his arm around to point to
everything he surveyed.

That night the pair of them slept with dreams of peace,
prosperity and love. Those dreams were sent unto them by the
lady he had tried to steal from near the hotel.

During the night Miguele got up twice just to check all
the food was still there, that this was no dream.

When he returned to bed the second time, Abetta put her
arms around him and pulled him to her breast. "Be still my
husband. All is well. What will be will be." She always was
the philosophical one of the family.

The sun rose bright, early and hot the next day. The
girls were out in the yard playing, laughing, running.
Miguele rose, stretched and walked outside just to breath in
the air and feel the sunshine.

He walked back into the house and Abetta hugged him and
put a meal in front of him at the table. He sat down to eat.
The food was terrific. He had never tasted food so good, but
then Abetta was the best cook in the land anyway. He always
said that of her.

The sun was reaching high noon and Abetta called in the
girls for lunch. They were brown, hot and puffed out. Abetta
put a plate full of sandwiches down in the center of the
table and everyone had lunch. They were just putting the
newly washed dishes away when they heard a vehicle pull up
in front of the house. Miguele's heart sank. Was this the
police?

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Salad Days: What is the reason we call a man's youth his
"salad days"?

It's because when a man is young, he's "green" and "greens
go into making a salad.

HA! HA! HA!

The staff at a business office was hosting a farewell
luncheon for a retiring colleague. As the group prepared to
go to the restaurant, they found that they couldn't fit the
giant balloon they had purchased for the retiring 'guest of
honor' into the car. Undaunted, they simply held the balloon
out the window as they drove.

The office workers were not prepared for the glares they
received from passers-by, however. As the long line of
traffic in front of their vehicle began to turn, they saw
that their car was right behind a long funeral procession.
There was nothing they could do but hold on to the balloon
with its large farewell message:

"GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN."
