TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
How good at sniffing out prey is the bloodhound?
Exactly what is a bloodhound sniffing when it follows a
trail?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What 1966 movie involved a miniature submarine traveling
through a person's body to destroy a blood clot?
"Fantastic Voyage" had a fantastic plot: when a brilliant
scientist has an inoperable blood clot in the brain, a
surgical team is sent on a top-secret journey to the center
of his mind in a shrunken high-tech military submarine.
Highlights of this incredible adventure include scuba-diving
surgeons battling white blood cells and shooting the aorta
like daredevil surfers. The film won an Oscar for Best
Visual Effects.
How did the bloodhound get its name?
The bloodhound is not named for its ability to smell blood,
as is commonly believed. Rather, it's the first breed of dog
whose blood, or lineage, was ever recorded. The name
"bloodhound" is derived from the term "blooded hound,"
meaning a hound of pure breeding. Bloodhounds are an ancient
breed, known as far back as the seventh century (and even
farther) when St. Hubert, patron saint of the hunter, helped
to develop the breed. The dogs began to be used as trackers
in the 16th century. Their ability to track prey was so good
and their "testimony" so highly regarded that they had the
legal right to follow a trail anywhere, even into homes.
Even today, trails performed by bloodhounds are permissible
evidence in court.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
------------------------------------
How Important Are Team Mission Statements?
A team is not a team unless it knows why it’s a team. Teams
according to Jon Katzenbach* are "small groups of people
with complementary skills committed to a common purpose,
approach, and performance goals for which they hold
themselves mutually accountable". The first thing that
small group of people has to do is to establish that common
purpose.
A team purpose is usually shaped in response to a request,
opportunity or demand from management. If you ARE
management, then your purpose as a team may be more urgent,
more open-ended, and more difficult to capture. The
parameters of a team purpose are usually framed by the
performance requirement of the company. If you are a
peanut-dicer maker, your team will likely have a mission
statement that will enhance production, market or function
of peanut-dicers. Pinpointing the mission is essential.
Only then can every team member focus clearly.
Clear statement of purpose establishes the character,
rationale and performance challenges for the team, but
allows for creativity and 'wiggle room' for the team to set
specific goals, timing and approach. Most teams do not spend
sufficient time defining their purpose. It is somehow
assumed that everyone knows it! Take, for example, the
software development industry. They are known for the "Fire,
Ready, Aim" approach to creating software. There is even a
cartoon that shows a project manager telling his team, "You
go upstairs and start writing code. I'll go and find out
what they want it to do!" On a more serious note, research
shows that much time, energy and money is saved in the
technology industry by working groups and teams that take
the time to explore and clarify their requirements. In
fact, statistics suggest that spending at least 40% of the
project time is efficient and effective! Compelling
information, isn't it?
An example closer to home would be how you use goal-setting
in your own life. Do you have a fuzzy goal such as "I want
to be healthier"? Unless you know clearly that you want to
have more energy, be stronger, more flexible and resilient,
and cough less, you will not be focused enough to find
solutions that match your goals. "I want to be healthier" is
the impetus for creating the mission statement. In the same
way, "We need more profit" is the impetus for creating the
team. Then the team goes to work!
Sometimes a team mission statement is straightforward, for
example, to recommend the best solution to a specific
problem and little time is required for all to understand
the mission. Team members can immediately develop their
approach and performance goals. Other times, teams have a
fuzzy idea about why they have been brought together and
need to make delineating that the first order of business.
Teams run things, recommend things or make and do things.
Every member needs to know the purpose of the team, and
needs to be able to state it in twenty words or less. How
is your team doing?
* Quote from The Wisdom of Teams by Jon R. Katzenbach, New
York: Harper Collins, 1993.

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 10 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
Now that you have a greater understanding, you will find
questions to your answers. If you recognize some possible
allergies, find out why you have them and why the entire
world doesn't have them. Yes, many do, but again, they are
not a natural phenomenon. Find out what is going into your
body via foods, drugs, or environmental "irritants". Ask why
your body puts up a fight (asthma attack or sneezing) when
something gets into your nose or lungs. Your respiratory
system is trying to protect you. Yet you take a drug that
halts your protective defence mechanisms as the symptoms are
inconvenient at that moment.
If you find your elbows stiff after tennis, ask yourself
why. Perhaps you overdid the exercise program? If you can
see free radicals as the enemy of your body and the
antioxidants as your helpers, would it not then make sense
to fill your body with antioxidants at every opportunity?
And you can do that by checking everything you eat.
I am really glad we are on an anti-aging crusade but I think
it comes from the wrong sector of society. Rebuild your own
body with common sense and healthy choices. Ask yourself how
you can feed and nurture every cell of your body's systems.
Your entire body needs adequate and appropriate nutrition,
and the elimination of harmful intruders. (Drugs, allergens,
unhealthy environments, etc., all contribute to this.)
You are the gatekeeper. RSVP your way back to health. Read
all you can. Study what you really don't understand.
Visualize yourself in full health (no matter what your
present state is.). Then get practical. Follow proper eating
habits and exercise your body. You don't have to run a
marathon. A gentle walk will do and you can increase the
pace as you feel like it. Make the changes you know are
necessary. And please remember you are NOT your spouse, your
parent, or anyone else. You are strictly you. Only you have
been privilege of living in this body for now. It is your
responsibility to nurture it so we can all benefit from the
purpose of your life.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

What Can I Do?
I see a disbelief, a lethargy among the masses over the
subject of global warming. It is spurred on by the same
attitude voiced publicly by some politicians.
The attitude seems to be based on one of two things. First
there is the notion that the world, the universe, is so
large that it is impossible for man to do anything to change
it or cause global warming.
The second is that there is nothing we can do about it so
why worry about it?
Please note neither of these attitudes denys that global
warming is happening.
So maybe the world does believe it is happening and has
already thrown up its hands in fultility, I don’t know. However,
to think nothing can be done about it is pure folly.
Man can do two things about global warming, in the
realization it cannot and will not be stopped. He can stop
participating right now - that is to say he can stop
producing greenhouse gasses. Oh, that will not stop the
condition for a very long time but it will stop prolonging
the condition after that very long time.
Next, he can prepare for the effects of global warming. He
can begin to introduce legislation that will aid the social
condition of the future. He can prepare his families, He can
learn new and different ways to produce food. He can prepare
for drought and for flooding. Man can, right now, prepare for
land loss because of increasing depth of oceans.
The truth is man can do a lot of things to help humans
survive the effects of global warming. And man as an
individual can do a lot in his own life and surroundings to
prepare. Even just asking yourself the question “What will
the future be like with this global warming thing?” or “What
will I be doing in the future because of global warming?”
Ask these questions and go find your answers. That alone
will help prepare you for your future.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
A-1. Why do we use "A-1" to mean "the very best"?
Because when the Marine insurance firms of London started
the association later to become known as "Lloyds," they also
started a register of ships and shipping in which the
condition of the ships and their cargo was noted. The ships
were graded by letter; the cargoes by number. "A" meant the
ship itself was perfect; "1" that the cargo was likewise
perfect.

HA! HA! HA!
Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered.
Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were
able to give their elderly mother.
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother."
The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You
remember how mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know
she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable
parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took elders in
the church 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind.
Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the
parrot recites it."
Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Milton," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so
huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the
whole house."
"Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel.
I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the
Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"
"Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "You have
the good sense to know what your mother likes. The
chicken was delicious."
