Were bugs ever a significant part of the human diet?

How many insects are edible?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Is it true that pigs are used to sniff out truffles?

Yes. Unfortunately, we're talking about the subterranean
fungus kind of truffle, not the ball-shaped cocoa-encrusted
candy made of chocolate, butter, sugar, and liqueur. Certain
dogs can sniff them out, too. Unlike the pigs, which tend to
gobble them up if unrestrained, the dogs will let you have
them.

Is it true that the FDA allows certain levels of insect
parts in food?

Yes. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, "it
is economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw
products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally
occurring, unavoidable defects." These unavoidable defects
can include insect parts, rodent hairs, mold, and even
"mammalian excreta." The agency has therefore established
"Food Defect Action Levels," the maximum levels of
unavoidable defects it will allow. Chocolate and chocolate
liquor, for example, must contain less than an average of 60
or more insect fragments per 100 grams and one or more
rodent hairs per 100 grams. Anything above that, and the FDA
will regard the food as "adulterated" and subject to
enforcement action. Ground cinnamon must contain less than
an average of 400 or more insect fragments per 50 grams and
an average of 11 or more rodent hairs per 50 grams. (The
defect levels do not represent an average of the defects
that usually occur - just the maximum allowed.) Yummy.

World 'lacks will' on disasters

There is a global lack of political will on preparing for
natural disasters, according to a report by British MPs.

The International Development Committee says donors are
unwilling to fund preventative and protective measures.

It urges the UK to lobby international partners to spend
more on prevention.

And it says the government's aim of spending 10% of disaster
response funds on preventing future damage should be
extended to all humanitarian budgets.

The report says two-thirds of natural disasters relate to
climatic changes.

But, the committee says, there is a reluctance at
international level to link disasters with the changing
climate.

"More and more people are being afflicted by natural
disasters and the impact of climate change will increase the
number of disasters exponentially," said committee chair
Malcolm Bruce.

"Yet political decision-makers are failing to make
responsible preparations."

Rising tide

The number of natural disasters is rising, the report finds,
and so is the money allocated globally to humanitarian
programmes, which almost tripled between 1995 and 2005.

In its White Paper, published in July, Britain's Department
for International Development (DfID) pledged to spend 10% of
funds allocated for any natural disaster on measures aimed
at reducing the risk of future events.

Now, says the committee, DfID should go further, extending
the 10% figure for disaster risk reduction (DRR) to its
overall humanitarian budget and persuading other donors to
adopt the same strategy.

"We are calling for the UK, EU, World Bank and other donors
to devote at least 10% of their total humanitarian budgets
to reducing the impact of potential disasters," said Mr
Bruce.

But, the report says, donors have historically been
resistant. It says: "Lives saved through DRR are invisible
to the media, whereas people pulled from the rubble by
search and rescue teams are highly visible."

The United Nations, which co-ordinates and funds much of the
global response to large disasters, is not immune from
criticism.

But, says the report, failings within the UN are largely the
fault of national governments.

"The international humanitarian system will only ever be as
effective as political decision-makers will allow," it
concludes.

Are Your Drugs Making You Sick?
Part 1 of 5

An interesting exercise for you to do sometime is to take a
really good drug site or book and one of your personal
prescriptions or "over the counter" medicines, and check
them out for side effects. In Canada, the CPS would be
appropriate and in the USA, it would be the Physician's Desk
Reference. Internet-wise, Medline.com is a great site.

Use the generic or trade name and read the side effects or
the possible complications. Look for this heading:

Side Effects of This Medicine
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some
unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may
occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention."

(This is a note in most drug books and you really should
look for it for your own particular medication.)

Read the descriptions, and if you don't understand a term,
look it up. Don't be afraid of what you might find…that's
good as the fear is alerting you to a potential problem.
Please remember this is your body and these chemicals are
going into it WITH your consent.

For example, if you looked up "anti-depressants, two of the
side effects listed are dizziness and tiredness. Now if I
was already depressed, I wouldn't appreciate being dizzy and
tired as well. I might accept them, if the treatment helped,
but it would an informed choice. So be knowledgeable about
your health: no will ever care as much about it as you will.
(And you have to LIVE in the body!)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

SNAFU

SNAFU is always a good way to describe what is going on in
the news these days. It means "Situation normal, all fouled
up" for those of you who do not know.

I see the US thinks Syria, Iran and the Hezbollah are
ganging up to try to topple the Lebanese government. The
Lebanese government says "that's silly".

Well, for my money I'd believe almost anything is possible.
Nothing over in the Middle East makes much sense. I am, of
course, very happy I don't have to live there. Living under
constant threat of war, bombing or other catastrophe is not
the kind of life I want. Life is tough enough without that.

On the other hand, I see John Kerry is trying to duck or run
for cover. It is as if the whole world is after him and now
George Bush is calling for an apology. Convenient, huh!

The French are having such a hard time with Muslim groups in
their own land they have now banned 70 Muslim workers from
the airport saying they have "terrorist links". Does that
mean that anyone who writes an email or makes a phone call
to relatives in Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt or other Muslim
country is a terrorist? Or is this the French getting back
at the Muslim community for all the unrest they are causing
in certain areas of France?

The UK thinks there is a global "lack of will" to help out
in natural disasters. It boils down to the money thing. Can
you imaging what the world will do when global warming
begins to hit their own lands? Can you see the fences go up
all over? It would be just Mexico that is fenced off from
the US.

Life gets prettier and prettier, don't it?

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Cad. Why do we call a vulgar person a "cad"?

Because a page boy was once called a "cadet". For this
reason the public school boys of England called a person who
waited on them a "cadet" which they shortened to "cad".
Since these "cads" were less educated than the schoolboys,
they were presumed to be vulgar persons devoid of the finer
instincts. So, in time, any person who possessed these
attributes was called a "cad".
