Were bugs ever a significant part of the human diet?

Probably. Evidence suggests that termites were once a
regular entree for our ancestors. Researchers from the
University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa,
and the National Center for Science Research in Talence,
France, analyzed tiny scratches on 85 bones found at digs in
South Africa. The bones are the oldest known bone tools,
dating back one to two million years. Researchers previously
concluded the bone tools were used by a pre-human species
known as Australophithecus robustus to fig up tubers. The
new analysis concluded that the location and shape of
striations on the bones match those on bone tools created
for experiments to open up termite mounds. According to the
researchers: "Our results suggest that early hominids used a
bone technology as part of their dietary adaptations, and
they maintained a bone tool termite foraging cultural
tradition in southern Africa for nearly a million years."

How many insects are edible?

According to EatBug.com (the premier site for bug eaters),
most insects are edible. However, 1,462 have been officially
recorded as edible. The official term for bug-eating is
entomophagy. Advantages to eating bugs include high protein
and low fat content, no squeamishness about killing fluffy
little animals, and the ease of raising your supper (heck,
you can raise bugs in your apartment).

Six Arab states join rush to go nuclear
By Richard Beeston, Diplomatic Editor

Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, UAE and Saudi Arabia seek
atom technology

THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised
yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were
embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.

The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb
Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid
spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most
unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and
into North Africa.

The countries involved were named by the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and
Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.

All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as
they are permitted to under international law. But the
sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the
real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could
be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.

“Some Middle East states, including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria
and Saudi Arabia, have shown initial interest [in
using] nuclear power primarily for desalination purposes,”
Tomihiro Taniguch, the deputy director-general of the IAEA,
told the business weekly Middle East Economic Digest. He
said that they had held preliminary discussions with the
governments and that the IAEA’s technical advisory programme
would be offered to them to help with studies into creating
power plants.

Mark Fitzpatrick, an expert on nuclear proliferation at the
International Institute for Strategic Studies, said that it
was clear that the sudden drive for nuclear expertise was to
provide the Arabs with a “security hedge”.

“If Iran was not on the path to a nuclear weapons capability
you would probably not see this sudden rush [in the Arab
world],” he said.

The announcement by the six nations is a stunning reversal
of policy in the Arab world, which had until recently been
pressing for a nuclear free Middle East, where only Israel
has nuclear weapons.

Egypt and other North African states can argue with some
justification that they need cheap, safe energy for their
expanding economies and growing populations at a time of
high oil prices.

The case will be much harder for Saudi Arabia, which sits on
the world’s largest oil reserves. Earlier this year Prince
Saud al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, told The Times that
his country opposed the spread of nuclear power and weapons
in the Arab world.

Since then, however, the Iranians have accelerated their
nuclear power and enrichment programmes.

Are Your Drugs Making You Sick?
Part 2 of 5

Drug Interactions Or Side Effects: Not To Be Taken Lightly
Or Ignored Altogether.

This past weekend I spent hours doing research on drug
interactions for a lovely young lady of 73! She was on two
medications for one of her conditions and three for
another.  Then she was also on something to help her prevent
bone density loss. Our concern for her was the possible side
effects and interactions. Initially she went to her doctor
to get some help with her dizziness. Eventually she wasn't
much better. In fact she thought she was worse off than
before.

I started my usual search in Medline
http://medlineplus.gov/   I added the drug name and quickly
moved to the next stage. I always go to the "Medical
Encyclopedia" section. It's the easiest to understand.  My
first mistake was to do the search for the one drug I wasn't
familiar with. I thought I knew the others fairly well and
felt I could think the "connections" through without doing
much more searching. However what I found with the first
search really concerned me. Consequently, I did very careful
searches for all the others.

Here's why I know it was a "mistake".  If I had checked the
other drugs first, I would have concluded this one would be
fine.  But having done the unknown one first, and finding it
to be labeled something along the lines of being the
corrective measure for such drug overdoses, I now really
read every word very carefully. I would have been lulled
into a false sense of security and totally missed the
cautionary note.  Not good. Good lesson for me to learn. I
found some disturbing results.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

No Saddam! No Fish! But Lots of Nukes!

The big news today seems to be that Saddam Hussein is
finally received his sentence. The news is full of it, all
over. He has been sentenced to death by hanging.

The man is responsible for the death of thousands. This is
the law “As ye sow, so shall ye reap” coming into play
publicly.

I see, in other news, that now all the Arab nations want to
have nuclear power and weapons. This is diametrically
opposed to their former stand.

I guess it won’t be long, folks, before we’ll be able to
purchase small hand held nuclear bombs at out local hardware
store, or surplus store. It would appear as if the whole
world has gone quite mad over this issue.

Weapons like these will soon be in the hands of those who do
not care how they use them, then we will be in the middle of
the pickle barrel.

On another front I have been reading reports of concern over
fishing. It seems that between pollution, over fishing and
global warming the stocks of fish in the ocean are depleting
to the point where we will have no fish left by the year
2048. In our lifetime we will have no seafood left.

The report, of course, is being met with conservative
reaction. Governments don’t believe it, or don’t want to
believe it. So we’ll see what, if any, action will be taken
by the world’s large fishing nations.

That’s enough for today folks. See you tomorrow!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Hair of the Dog. Why is taking a morning-after drink as a
pickup called taking a "hair of the dog that bit you"?

Because the ancients believed that one of the best cures for
hydrophobia or any other disease you might obtain from a dog
bite, consisted of taking a "hair of the dog that bit you"
and placing it in the wound.

HA! HA! HA!

Top 10 Reasons God Created Eve

10. God worried that Adam would frequently become lost in
the garden because he would not ask for directions.

9. God knew that Adam would one day require someone to
locate and hand him the TV remote.

8. God knew that Adam would never go out and get himself a
new fig leaf when his seat wore out and would, therefore,
need Eve to go get one for him.

7. God knew that Adam would never be able to make a
doctor's, dentist, or haircut appointment for himself.

6. God knew that Adam would never be able to remember which
night to put the garbage on the curb.

5. God knew that if the world was to be populated, men would
never be able to handle the pain and discomfort of
childbearing.

4. As "Keeper of the Garden," Adam would never remember
where he left his tools.

3. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on
when God caught him hiding in the garden.

2. As the Bible says, "It is not good for man to be alone!"
And finally, the number ONE reason that God created Eve...

1. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back,
scratched His head, and said, "I can do better than THAT!"
