Is it true that Bubble Yum was found to contain spider eggs?
Don't believe everything you hear. Bubble Yum chewing gum
does not and never did contain spider eggs, or spider legs.
This is what we call an urban legend - one of those stories
that gets passed around for so long that everyone begins to
believe it really happened. According to Snopes.com (a great
site for urban legends), some kids in either New York or
Chicago started saying that the reason Bubble Yum was so
soft was because the gum had spider legs in it. Bubble Yum,
debuting in 1976, was the first soft bubble gum to hit the
market. It was enormously successful at first, but by the
spring of the following year, sales had slipped noticeably
in the New York area. Rumors that the gum contained spider's
eggs (or spider legs) were everywhere and kids were telling
tall tales about a girl waking up with webs all over her
face or nine kids dying after swallowing Bubble Yum. The
manufacturer of Bubble Yum, Life Saver Co., tackled the
rumor head-on. The company's surveys showed that "well over
half" of the children in the New York area had heard the
rumor. Life Saver ran full-page ads in fifty major
newspapers. "Somebody is telling very bad lies about a very
good product," the headline proclaimed. Eventually, the
message got across and consumer faith in Bubble Yum was
restored.
What is a seeing-eye pony?
Out: Seeing-eye dogs. In: Seeing-eye ponies. Don't be
surprised if you see a miniature horse, wearing cute little
sneakers, assisting a blind person down your street.
Seeing-eye ponies are the newest guide animals. The ponies,
about two feet tall, are great as guides. They're calm, have
good memories, excellent night vision, and they live 25-35
years (much longer than your seeing-eye dog). What's more:
they'll save you the cost of a lawn mower. The horses are
small enough to live indoors as pets AND they're
house-trained. What about the sneakers? The shoes provide
indoor traction.

If The Result Is Inevitable!
Early in my flying career, I had my first night flight.
Looking down into the darkness, I asked my instructor what
we would do if the engine failed.
"Get the plane gliding in a controlled descent," he said,
"then attempt to restart the engine and make a 'Mayday'
call. The only difference between day and night flying is
that the terrain below will not be clearly visible, so you
should point the aircraft toward whatever looks like a clear
area and it should be pointing into the wind."
"Then what?" I asked.
"Conserve your battery, so don't turn on your landing lights
until you're close to the ground. If you like what you see,
land."
"Okay, but what if I don't like what I see?"
My instructor gave me a compassionate look inside that dim
cockpit, then said softly, "Turn off the landing lights."
I fly, and I'm not sure I like what I see in the joke above.
It does bring out a point, however, and that is that if
something is inevitable you might as well sit back and enjoy
it.
The meaning is that when things are going to happen, and you
cannot stop them, then relax and let them happen. Your
involvement can begin again when things settle down.
I know some of you are saying, "How can I relax when what is
going to happen is wrong?"
You will notice I didn't say you had to pass judgment on it
so you stressed yourself into a heart attack. Just the
opposite is what I am recommending. I know you think some
things are wrong, yet you must clearly understand that is
only your opinion. There are others who obviously think it
to be right.
The whole point is that if something is going to happen, and
you can do nothing to prevent it, then LET the chips fall
where they may. You will have another day and time to get
things straight.
All of life offers times and places where these types of
circumstances come up. If you are a parent, you will find
the most difficult thing in the world is keeping quiet when
your children are raising their children. You will see them
doing lots of things you would never dream of doing, yet you
must remain silent. Your job at this point is to deliver
love, nothing else. So let your kids do as they might. Just
love your grandchildren, and show it.
Another time and place where things might happen that you
don't like is on the job, when you are beginning to entrust
a new employee with certain tasks. You can always coach
them, work with them before and after a task, but if you
picked the employee, you picked them because you thought
they could do a task. Once you turn them loose to do it,
stay out of their way. If they do something wrong you can
discuss it later, not in public while they are doing it.
There are lots of times when you must consider the serenity
prayer. ?God grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot
change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to
Know the difference.?

Are Your Drugs Making You Sick?

I am not a pharmacist and I don't choose to be one. But I am
having some difficulty knowing who to send people to for
this kind of professional support or interpretation. The
problem may lie in the fact that clinics are often the main
health providers. You frequently don't get the same doctor
or nurse clinician.
If you are already on some sort of medication, chances are
the attending physician won't know you, or be familiar with
your medical history. There is never enough time for them to
read your history or to check for drugs. You are simply
prescribed something for the "presenting" condition. If you
are already on something for this "presenting condition" and
now given another medication, that makes two. And if you
have side effects from one, could you maybe have more from
the next one? And what does it do to your body?
When I am asked to do this type of search, it is usually
with some underlying question
or reason. In most cases, it's because they already have
interactions or side effects, and can't tolerate the
product. But they are not too keen to go back to their
clinic and ask to be given something else.
For example, you go with the "complaint" of dizziness, and
you are prescribed something that should help. But many of
those drugs already have dizziness as a side effect. So now
you have the original complaint and the new side effect. But
unless you are savvy about doing this kind of search, you
won't know anything about side effects until after you have
paid for the prescription. A little late.

Global Conference Begins!
Good day folks! I see the 12 day conference on global
warming and climate changes is getting underway today in
Nairobi. What do you want to bet they come away saying we
have a serious problem, and then do nothing significant
about it?
Oh! They will recommend things. They will certainly come
away saying they were great for having come up with some
suggestions, but I predict that if they do anything at all
it will be maybe five percent of what they should do.
No one is saying this “condition” is on an exponential
scale. That means that the results of global warming are
accelerating.
I presume they will have the world’s leading experts at this
conference, men and women who have long studied the
condition, but they will not be heard - because it “costs
too much”.
I really don’t like being a cynic. However, history tells me
there is no way the world will look after the global warming
problem in time or with any degree of enthusiasm.
In the meantime I see in Indonesia they are cutting down the
forests so fast they are displacing animals at a phenomenal
rate. Animals like this orangutang have to be caught and put in
new areas or expire.
