TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
How come zebras have never been domesticated?
What is the only other animal besides humans that can stand
on its head?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
When were horses domesticated?
The domestication of horses was a major milestone in human
history, but no one is quite sure when it happened. The most
accepted theory, until recently, held that horses were
domesticated about 6,000 years ago in Central Asia, and then
tamed horses were sent from Asia to the rest of the world.
The latest research suggests instead that the domestication
of horses had multiple origins. Swedish researchers analyzed
genetic material from about 200 horses, including existing
breeds and fossilized remains of ancient horses. They were
surprised to discover tremendous diversity, suggesting that
horses were NOT domesticated at one particular time and
place, but in many places at many different times.
Were there ever wild cows?
Roving bands of wild vacant-eyed cattle did indeed once roam
the earth. (You can stop trembling now). These wild cows
were called aurochs and we know they existed because
pictures of them have been found on prehistoric cave
paintings. Actually, wild cows were still around and still
surviving in the wild as late as 1627, when a poacher in
Poland is believed to have killed the last one.

You Want It By When?
People hate excuses. Missed deadlines generate excuses
faster than dogs eat homework!
When you are asked to undertake a project, understand the
expectations. Be forthcoming with your questions about the
parameters and purposes of the project. Get as much clarity
as you can about what your boss is wanting from you
specifically. Discuss the projected timeline in depth. Take
time to consider your ability to meet the schedule. Agree
to produce only what you are willing to deliver, what you
CAN deliver. Then, proceed.
Everything is fine and, then, you hit a snag. What to do?
You might think you have good reasons for missing a
deadline. No doubt, you do. Projects intervene. Others
fail to get you information on time. The time for those
reasons...and their solutions...is at the first moment you
realize you will not be able to meet the deadline. It is
essential to be pro-active. If there is likely to be a time
problem, your boss wants to know about it at the earliest
possible moment.
You demonstrate your understanding of the importance of a
project to your manager by being pro-active in this way.
Show that you are aware of his/her schedule. Be as
accountable as possible. You want the project to succeed
and, therefore, inform your boss of the needed alteration in
timing as soon as possible. You are simply altering a
schedule, not trashing a project. Put it in perspective for
the success of the project. Demonstrate some control of the
situation. You are offering a progress report, not a report
of no progress.
Extending a deadline is buying time. What are you going to
exchange for the purchase?
When you have not met a deadline, your boss has four main
choices: fire you, demand free overtime, give the project to
someone else, or extend your deadline. S/he is far more
likely to feel positively about extending the deadline if
you can demonstrate an increase in the value he or she will
receive. Here's a great example of this: "To do the most
thorough job possible and prevent us from making a mistake
on this, I'm going to need a week more. I don't think it
will do us any good to try to rush it and end up neglecting
x.y and z."* Be clear about what that additional time will
produce--in this case, a more thorough, thoughtful and
successful job.
Make no excuses. Folks may accept them, but, they will never
like them. Being perceived as an excuse-maker, calls your
effectiveness and maturity into question. It affects your
future relationship with these folks.
This is big stuff! It's your career. Be pro-active!

Are Your Drugs Making You Sick?
Part 4 of 5
Nowadays, some people are given a "drug combination". So
now you need to compare all these for possible interactions.
A very challenging, time consuming, and frustrating job! Do
a search sometime. You will find many medications have side
effects of dizziness. My friend was also prescribed another
batch of drugs for her second condition. Alas, two of those
said they shouldn't be taken with the other condition's
drugs! And the calcium product was not to be taken with some
of these. So how was she to know what to take? All she knew
was that she was dizzy and the drugs were seemingly making
her dizzier! And at 73, she is a bit intimidated to ask
"her" doctor to help her sort all this out.
Each time I spoke with her, the previous doctor had left
that clinic, and the new one didn't know her situation. One
of her conditions had to do with sinus congestion. For that
she took some "over the counter" meds or "OTC". Did anyone
know? Nope! So here was another set of possible
complications. I wrote an article a while back about the
"rebound" effect of certain medications. It simply means
that in some drug products, if you take more than the
prescribed daily dose, the drug works against you!
All these drugs, taken independently, look pretty innocent.
You can probably tolerate the side effects without too much
trouble. But taken in groups, they pose a
potentially-serious problem. I honestly don't know who to
send you or my friend to, except the Medline link. You must
do some very detailed research for yourself.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Big Day For Me!
No doom and gloom folks. Today I experienced a day I
wish my parents had seen. My wife and I enjoyed out 47th
anniversary.
We stepped out for a very fine supper with our kids and had
a thoroughly wonderful time.
This is the kind of thing that happens in my life that I
would wish on everyone.
Mom and I have had our ups and downs. We have had the worst
of fights and the most glorious of times making up. We have,
together, been plunged to the depths of despair and have
reached the summit of euphoria. And, believe it or not we
are still the best of friends.
It is a time I ask you to strive for and enjoy.
I don’t think I would have amounted to much if it had not
been for my terrific wife. She has made me feel strong,
worthy and wanted.
So you can imagine I took some time off today. I’ll be back
with you tomorrow.
Have a good one!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Faction. Where did we get the word "faction"
From the Romans. The charioteers who performed in the Circus
Maximus were divided into four different parties and the
Latin word for "party" is factio. Each "faction" wore a
different color and originally represented a different
season of the year - although with time the number of
"factions" was increased to six. Civil war between the "blue
faction" and the "green faction" in 532 A.D. led to the
current meaning of "opposing political groups."
