ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How much does a baby elephant weigh?
Imagine having "200 pounds" on YOUR birth certificate.
Fortunately, mother elephants weigh quite a bit themselves,
so they can handle 200 pound babies. The largest and
heaviest elephants can weigh as much as 15,000 pounds. Heck,
they spend about 16 hours a day eating or preparing to eat
and they consume an average of about 200 to 400 pounds of
food per day. What's hardest for the mother elephant is the
length of the pregnancy: 18 to 24 months (that's two YEARS,
girls).
Are there really elephant graveyards?
Legend has it that dying elephants, drawn by instinct or
memory, separate from their elephant families and journey
alone to secret graveyards to die amongst the bones of their
elephant ancestors. Accumulations of elephant bones have
indeed been found, but no one has actually seen an elephant
drag himself to these sites. The more likely explanation for
piles of elephant bones is that a large group of elephants
died together or in the same area, killed by poachers or by
illness or some other natural calamity. However, it IS true
that elephants will sometimes use their trunks to "bury" a
deceased elephant with branches or grass. It's also true
that if a herd of elephants comes across a deceased
elephant, the members will pause to feel and sniff the
remains and occasionally scatter the bones.

UN urges end to 'water apartheid'
By David Loyn
BBC Developing World correspondent
A new report from the United Nations Development Programme
has demanded a big increase in spending to provide clean
water.
The UNDP wants another $4bn (£2bn) a year spent, and says
that water has not received the attention it deserves.
Water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea kill far more people
than HIV/Aids and malaria combined, it said.
And the difference is particularly stark for children:
water-borne diseases kill five times as many children as
HIV/Aids.
Rich unaffected
The report says that 2.4 billion people in the world do not
have access to safe sanitation.
Some steps are simple and can have dramatic results - just
putting in a safe standpipe can reduce mortality by 20%.
But Kevin Watkins, the report's author, says that the world
needs to think on a much bigger scale than this.
He says a similar initiative is needed as that carried out
100 years ago in major European cities, including London, to
provide water and sewage treatment.
Back then, diseases such as cholera, carried in dirty water,
were affecting the rich as well as the poor.
In the modern world of what Mr Watkins calls "water
apartheid", the rich do not suffer in the same way, and the
incentives for government to act are less.
"You can't help wondering - if the children of the wealthy
were suffering the same fate as the children of the poor
regarding water and sanitation, if high income women were
also walking four hours a day to collect water - whether
something would have been done about it."
"I think something would have happened a long time ago."
Huge costs
The report finds that the big arguments about privatisation
in recent years miss the point.
There have been some high-profile failures where western
companies have not been able to deliver their promises in
developing countries.
Some of the world's poorest are paying the most for their
water
But slum dwellers in places including Nairobi in Kenya
already pay for private water supplies, delivered by truck.
The amounts they pay are huge and this water is more
expensive per litre than in London or New York.
The poorest people in Latin America can pay up to 10% of
their household income for water.
Climate change
As well as the loss of life and the cost of disease, the
time spent collecting water has other economic effects.
The report calculates that the cost to Africa is equivalent
to about 5% of the continent's economic growth, about the
same amount of growth as is generated by money received in
aid.
Mr Watkins says: "This is one of the biggest potential
setbacks to human development in Africa for a century."
But he says that water has been left out of recent
announcements on development by the richest countries in the
world.
The report does not believe that water represents a major
security threat, and the prospect of 'water wars' is not as
serious as others have predicted.
But it does warn of severe consequences if there is not a
major strategic plan for water use across country borders,
especially as climate change reduces the capacity.

HOW TO CHOOSE A NUTRITIONAL
SUPPLEMENT: A "Multivitamin" Safely And Wisely
Part 1 of 5
Please know that all vitamin and mineral supplements are
NOT alike! You may be tempted to buy the biggest bottle of
Vitamin C from the "big box" store pharmacy. But the perceived
value may not be reflected in your desired outcome or result.
What follows are some questions and answers on
HOW TO CHOOSE A NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT. There
will be a brief mention as to why you need to start taking
supplements, but mainly this will be how to buy something
that will help you support your immune system. And this
immune system is the very framework for your health and
ultimately your life. It should be treated like gold!
Why Do We Need To Supplement If We Eat Carefully?
Your body needs macronutrients as well as micronutrients.
That means the broccoli (macro) and carrots (macro) you
eat must have adequate amounts of both vitamins (micro) and
minerals (micro). But our food value isn't nearly as abundant
as it was 20 years ago. Many studies are available. These
studies also include why your foods are so depleted in the
appropriate nutrients.
What Are "Free Radicals" And "Anti-Oxidants"? Why should
you know about them? The most important medical discovery
of the last half-century concerns "free radicals" and
"anti-oxidants". Free radicals have been linked to (at last
count) to at least 60 diseases. And we now have evidence
that anti-oxidants can stop and (in some cases) can even
reverse the damage done by free radicals" Dr. Robert D. Willix Jr.
Here is a definition of the term: "chronic": A chronic condition
is continuous or persistent over an extended period of time.
A chronic condition is one that is long-standing, not easily
or quickly resolved.
"Chronic" is the opposite of acute. Do you go to the doctor for
fatigue, diabetes, heart problems, elevated cholesterol levels?
Those are chronic illnesses.
The American Medical Association (AMA) has already
reversed its position on the use of supplements. 'Policy-Reversal'
of the American Medical Association - who now consider
supplements to be a very important aspect in preventing
disease. JAMA Recommends Taking Supplements! Please
draw your own conclusions.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

A Come-Uppance In The Making!
The haves, it seems, are so comfortable they have no
interest in helping provide water to the have nots. That one
is going to come back and bite them.
Water is killing more kids in Africa than Malaria and HIV
combined. Water borne diseases are doing the job and appeals
for help, to get clean water to these people, are going
largely unnoticed by that part of the world that could
afford to help.
Same old, same old. Them what has - gets.
I know not why those who are well off don’t really want to
share. It’s like all the things I have observed about
religion over the years. It really seems that if you have
money, you don’t need God. Only the poor need God.
I am not saying that is right or wrong, it is just an
observation. I wonder what those who have money will think
when their money won’t buy food. I wonder if they will need
God then?
Oh well. Such things go through my mind as I sit and watch
the world turn.
See you tomorrow folks. Have a good one!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
D-Day. What's the origin of the term "D-Day"?
The "D" in "D-Day" just stands for "day" - any given day -
although it is now generally used to refer to the day Allied
troops invaded France in World War II - June 6, 1944. In
order not to divulge the designated day of a military
operation it was never written as a definite date but only
as "D"; the hour was designated as "H". Other related days
and hours were designated as "D+" or "D-" and "H+" and "H-".

HA! HA! HA!
Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress,
he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching
post. "Don't worry," my husband reassured me. "I'll have him
trained in no time."
I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained"
our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited
him outdoors to teach him a lesson.
The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he
wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa!!
