How long can trees live?
Trees can live an astonishingly long time. "Methuselah," a
4,700 year old California bristlecone pine, was already
around when the first stone was laid on the Great Pyramid.
Methuselah's older friend, another bristlecone dubbed
"Prometheus," was dated at more than 4,900 years old, but a
graduate student accidentally killed it while studying it to
establish its age. (Yes, this is "irony". And also a lesson
to all of us to avoid overeager graduate students.) A few
coastal redwoods have also lived thousands of years and a
good many live 500-700 years.
How can trees live that long? Don't they die of old age?
Not in the same way that people do. Humans and other animals
have fixed life spans. Individual humans may live a decade
or two longer than the average, but they can't go on
indefinitely. Many scientists think it is physically
impossible for humans to live too many years beyond 120.
Trees, on the other hand, are less complicated than we are.
They don't have brains and actually are part dead even when
they're alive. The wood in the center of a living, healthy
tree, for instance, is dead wood. All trees die eventually,
but they don't appear to have that maximum limit like we do.

See With Your Mind's Eye!
Michael was an extremely avid golfer with a cynical
attitude and arrogance, that when he passed away,
few people shed a tear. Michael approached the
Pearly Gates where St. Peter was waiting for him.
Rather than pass through the gates as normal
people had done, Michael stopped to ask a question.
"Before I agree to come in, I want to know exactly
what kind of golf course you have here" he said
to St. Peter.
"That shouldn't matter to you." said St. Peter.
"But it does. And then in his arrogant manner
exclaimed "Well if I can't see it, then I'm not
coming in!"
"Very well Michael. As you wish...look through the
gates." He looked and saw the poorest, most rundown,
excuse for a golf course that it made him sick to his
stomach.
"Forget it. There is no way I'm going to spend eternity
playing on that course!"
Just then, Michael heard the Devil calling him over
the gate. "Come over here and see what I have to
offer." Michael peers through the gate and he is
elated! There is the most absolutely fabulous golf
course he has ever seen! He turns to the Devil and
says "I want to play THAT course!"
"Ok. Step on through and it's yours forever."
St. Peter pleaded with Michael as he headed off
with the Devil and the gates closed behind him.
Michael walked up to the first tee and said "I can't wait
to play! Where are my clubs and ball? The Devil
roared with laughter. "Oh, there aren't any."
There are times in life when it is important to see
into the future. It is necessary to "forecast" what
might happen next.
The difficulty we have with emotions is they color
our judgment, most often wrongly. If you have an
ego that won't let go, I feel sorry for you. Had the
golfer taken the time to consider who he was
speaking with, and what he knew of their
reputations he might well have chosen differently.
However, he had an ego that got in his way and
he will pay the price for his decision.
Too often that happens in life. Too many times
we fail to listen to that little voice within that will
warn us of impending danger. Too many times we
barge ahead in the mistaken belief we are invincible,
or can handle anything.
When you lead with a false confidence sponsored
by your emotions you are asking for trouble, and
will most often get it.
Learn to be calm, to look at the world through your
"mind's eye". Learn to listen to that small voice
within. It will ALWAYS steer you right.
Learn to look beyond what you see, to anticipate
the results of decisions before you take them. Doing
so will have you reaching your goals sooner, and
with much less difficulty. Learn to - - -

How do you know what to take unless you are an expert?
Chances are you won't know how to combine all the
required items, including all the co-factors. Trust someone
who knows...it will most likely be the manufacturer who
has already done the initial research and has participated
in the scientific process for the basic supplement. Get
advice from someone who knows the company and its
products if you are going to add any other products.
These products will work synergistically.
Your goal is to choose an appropriate, value packed
product. But in light of all the products you are faced with
and that you are NOT going to choose, knowing a little
of the science behind the manufacturing process will
help you stand firm in your decision. You will learn a little
about "free radicals", anti-oxidants, and the oxidative
process...the wearing out or rusting out of your body.
Then your decisions will be based on facts and wisdom.
It is important to remember that you are totally responsible
for what goes on in your body. So you have to know what
you need and what it will do to or for you. It doesn't matter
if it's a vegetable or a supplement. The responsibility is
yours alone. You may ask for advice, but the end decision
is yours. What you put in should help your entire body
stay healthy: be it food at the dinner table or a supplement
to complement the food just eaten. In choosing a nutritional
supplement, please consider that you don't know what
your body actually needs or how you could find the required
ingredients. Also, you wouldn't know how to formulate the
necessary product.
If you are already taking supplements, compare them, using
these guidelines? And if you are already taking supplements,
but not getting the desired results, maybe you should consider
switching. According to the AMA, health is yours for the
taking...of nutritional supplements.

Hurry Up And Do Nothing!
As I anticipated the global warming conference in Nairobi is
coming to a close with no significant action on how to deal
with the effects of global warming or, for that matter, no
measureable steps to stop the production of greenhouse
gases.
I am sure the delegates will come away from the conference
all patting themselves on the back for doing a good job but
even the Secretary General of the UN has criticized them for
their appalling lack of leadership. He believes they are out
of step with what is happening and fail to believe what
science is telling us.
The net result of all this, of course, will be that our
governments will continue to do too little too late and the
resulting chaos will become dangerous and overwhelming.
One more thing I have observed over the years, because I
watch such things, is that earthquakes around the “Ring of
Fire”, the Pacific Basin, are becoming both more frequent
and overall stronger. We had an earthquake off the northern
coast of Japan this morning that measured 8.1 on the Richter
Scale. For those of you who don’t know that is HUGE.
And in other news it appears as if at least one meeting of
the “Six Nations” might happen sometime in December on the
matter of North Korean nuclear weapons. I hold out as much
hope for that as I do about the global warming issue.

It's a bit of keen phychological observation. The term comes
from the exclamation, "lackaday," which means "shame on you,
day" - just as though the "day" were a person. And since
most persons who cry "lackaday" and blame the quick passage
of time are looking for an excuse for their own lack of
energy, they are lackadaisical".

An attorney was flying on the red-eye flight from Hong Kong
to San Francisco. He wasn't looking forward to the flight
until when he sits down, a stunning beautiful blonde sits
down right next to him. Things were looking good. So the
attorney begins to hit on the blonde, asking her all kinds
of questions. She politely turns down his subtle advances,
saying that all she wants to do is sleep.
The attorney is relentless, and asks more and more
questions, about religion, politics, the news, etc. The
blonde just stares at him, shakes her head like she doesn't
know the answer to any of his questions, and closes her
eyes. The attorney gets more and more frustrated, and
finally gets so frustrated that he says that he is tired of
good-looking dumb blondes who can't provide a single
competent answer to any normal question.
So the attorney is so fed up that the blonde won't pay
attention to him that he leans over to the blonde and says:
"Look I am an experienced corporate litigation attorney,
intelligent and good-looking, and I bet that all you can do
is look good and act like a dumb blonde. In fact, I'm so
sure that I am more intelligent, I will bet you $5.00 that I
can ask you any question, and you won't be able to answer
it. Then you get to ask me any question, and if I can't
answer it, then I owe you $5.00."
The blonde just stares and closes her eyes. The attorney is
really getting frustrated at this point, and says, "O.K., I
bet that if I ask you a question that you can't answer, you
owe my $5.00, and if you ask me a question that I can't
answer, I owe you $500.00."
The blonde at this point is so tired of this game, that she
agrees. The attorney then asks her a question about the
American Civil War. The blonde just stares at him, reaches
for her wallet, and pays the attorney $5.00. The attorney
then says, O.K. it's your turn. The blonde says, "O.K.,
What goes up the hill with four legs and comes down the hill
with three legs?" The attorney ponders the question, but
doesn't know. He pulls out $500.00 from his wallet and pays
the blonde. The blonde then closes her eyes to go back to
sleep.
The attorney says "Hey, wait a minute, what does go up the
hill with four legs and comes down the hill with three
legs?" The blonde just stares at him, shakes her head,
reaches for her wallet, and pays the attorney $5.00.
