How many transplants can be done with the parts from one
organ donor?

Can any brain materials be transplanted?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How much wood is used to make a book?

To produce 1,000 copies of an average-sized book, you need
about one cord of wood. A cord is equal to a stack of logs
measuring about 75-100 cubic feet. For just a single book,
you 'd need a small block of wood slightly bigger than the
size of the book itself.

If you are an organ donor, can you limit what parts of your
body will be used or how they will be used?

No, at least not in the United States. When you sign a
Uniform Donor Card, you pledge ALL of your body to help
others. That doesn't necessarily mean that your organs will
be used in transplants. Fewer than one-third of organ donors
have organs suitable for transplant. Most provide only
tissue, like bone and skin. Body parts may also be used for
research. The Department of Transportation, for instance,
requests about 70 heads per year for use in automobile crash
tests. That sounds gruesome, I know, but research is
important and your organs and body parts do still save
lives, albeit in a more indirect manner than in
transplantation.

Climate Change Threatens Peace, Population, UN Says
By Mathew Carr and Alex Morales
Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) --

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said the impact
of global warming threatens peace and the world's
population.

Climate change will bring ``billion dollar weather-related
calamities'' and threatens security, Annan said at a meeting
of ministers in Nairobi, Kenya. ``Climate change is an all-
encompassing threat. It could endanger the ground on which
half the world's population lives.''

Kenyan Environment Minister Kivutha Kibwana opened the talks
on Nov. 6 with a call to help developing nations cope with
the effects of climate change, which he said was ``rapidly
emerging as one of the most serious threats that humanity
may ever face.'' Ministers from around the world began three
days of higher-level negotiations today.

Scientists say global warming caused by man-made emissions
of carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases is
causing glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise and coral reefs
to die out. A U.K. government report last month said that
tackling the problem by cutting emissions now may cost a
20th of the price of letting it escalate.

``Climate change is a threat to peace and security,'' Annan
said. ``Changing patterns of rainfall, for example, can
heighten competition for resources, setting in motion
potentially destabilizing tensions and migrations,
especially in fragile states and volatile regions. There is
evidence some of this is already occurring.''

Kyoto Protocol

Annan said later at a news conference, in response to a
question from Bloomberg News, that it would be
``preferable'' for the U.S. and Australia to ratify the
Kyoto Protocol, a treaty capping emissions of greenhouse
gases by industrialized nations including the European Union
and Japan.

``If they do not sign the Kyoto agreement, they have to act
and be in-step with the rest of the industrialized world,''
Annan said. ``They have a responsibility to their citizens
and to the rest of the world and the people who share the
planet to bring their emissions under control.''

The Bush administration rejected the Kyoto Protocol in 2001,
citing costs to businesses and a loss of competitiveness.
The protocol seeks to cut global emissions of carbon dioxide
to 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. U.S. President
George W. Bush has called on companies to limit emissions
voluntarily.

Among issues discussed so far by about 5,000 delegates at
the conference are creating a fund to help developing
countries defend themselves against the effects of climate
change, sharing technology that promotes low emissions and
the way forward for the Kyoto Protocol, whose emissions caps
expire in 2012.

The protocol is ``not a magic bullet'' and additional cuts
and further measures need to be made, Annan said.
``We know already that an economy based on high emissions is
an uncontrolled experiment on the global climate,'' the UN
chief said. ``Even as we cut emissions, we must at the same
time do far more to adapt to global warming and its effects.
The impact of climate change will fall disproportionately on
the world's poorest countries, many of them here in
Africa.''

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

The Brain And Spinal Cord
Parts Of Your Body's Nervous System
Part 1 of 6

The brain is the organizing and processing center of your body
and of its nervous system. It is the site of consciousness
(awareness), sensation (feeling of sense), memory, and
coordination. And now is the time for motorcycles, and diving
accidents. What follows is just an overview of the brain and the
spinal cord, and a few of the more important structures and
their activities. Why the comment about diving accidents and
motorcycles? As a former OR nurse, I saw many quadriplegics come
through our doors for patch up jobs. We knew little could be
done to restore their lifestyle and vitality. (When our son
wanted a motorcycle, I made a deal with him. He would visit the
major rehabilitation center and speak with the patients...then
we would discuss the motorcycle. He drives a car.)

As I always need to remind you, if you feel something you are
reading reminds you of something you are experiencing, please
consult your medical team. This information, although meant to
be a lesson in healthy lifestyles, is not meant as a medical
resource. I want to do an overview primarily, showing you
how parts of the brain and the spinal cord connect and how
protective your body is of those most important "body part".

Our bodies really are a miracle! TWO miracles: one visible and
one invisible. Both need each other, but we tend not to value
the invisible one as much...till something goes wrong. The
visible part of us is the body "parts". The invisible (to us) is
the nervous system. If you are a surgeon, you will be able to
see the actual nerve in its physical form, but you still can't
see its actions, although you will see the results of those
actions. The rest of us need to think of it this way...you can
see your finger move, but you couldn't see the actual nerve
doing all the steps to move that finger.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Too Little Too Late Becomes A Way Of Life!

By reading todays Cover Story you can see where the
Secretary General of the UN is markedly disappointed in the
action taken by all the countries at the conference on
global warming. He is a man who has clearly educated himself
on the subject and can be properly miffed at the way the
world is handling the situation.

Miffed or not he will have to get used to the idea that all
world governments will only do what they think they have to
and that will always be too little, too late.

The only way man will survive is where a man looks after his
own family and himself. If he depends on government he will
surely perish.

Remember, too, that money will not solve the issue. Only
clear thinking will get you through what is coming. It is
time to go inside yourself and get to learn your Maker. Then
only will you have a chance. Notice I did not say go to
church. That will not do what needs to be done. Your
relationship with your Maker is your business and not the
churches.

Anyway, that, in part, is what the books The Saga of
Pinehill books I and II are about. They will show you the
way.

Have a good weekend folks.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Macaroni: Why did Yankee Doodle call himself "macaroni"?

Because that was the then current name for a "fop" or a
"dandy". It was the name for a dandy because a group of
well-travelled young Englishmen of wealth and position
formed a club called the "Macaroni Club" in London around
1760. They named the club that because they were fond of
foreign cooking. these young men also dressed in foreign
manner; the common people misunderstood the use of the word
"macaroni" and took the name of their club to be descriptive
of their dress.
