ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Is it true that the holiday is about getting rid of empty
boxes after Christmas?
Not true! Despite the intriguing name, Boxing Day has
nothing to do with discarding boxes, returning gifts, or
hitting irritating holiday visitors. The holiday actually
has its origins in a long-ago British practice of giving
Christmas gifts to those NOT in one's social class the day
AFTER Christmas. Back then, you presented your equals with
their gifts on Christmas Day, but rewarded employees or
serfs or anyone below your status or "less fortunate" with
cash or gifts or tips or charity the day after. Those less
fortunate only received gifts. They were not expected to
give gifts back. The boxes were either the way the gifts
were presented (one theory) or a reference to the church
alms box.
How do people celebrate Boxing Day now?
Many people in countries that celebrate Boxing Day use the
holiday to visit extended family. You might, for instance,
celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day with your immediate
family, then visit in-laws or grandparents on Boxing Day.
How nice to have a "second" Christmas.

Here's To Think On! ... with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
What Do You Expect?
Dave called his mother and announced excitedly that he had
just met the woman of his dreams. Now what should he do?
His mother had an idea: "Why don't you send her flowers, and
on the card invite her to your place for a home-cooked
meal?"
He thought this was a great strategy and arranged a date for
a week later. His mother called the day after the big date
to see how things had gone.
"The evening was a disaster," he moaned.
"Why, didn't she come over?" asked his mother.
"Oh, she came over, but she refused to cook.
It is hard to believe but there are some people out there
with the same kind of intelligence this young man had. I
wonder what gave him the notion he could sit there and have
his "new wonder woman" do his cooking for him, especially
when he had asked her out for supper, a home cooked meal no
less.
Yet I see this situation every day. I see young people who
somehow have the idea that all they have to do is show up
for work and they'll get a paycheck. Where does that idea
come from. Have these people not been taught proper work
habits at home?
There are, for some reason, thousands of people out there
who think that all you have to do is set up a web page and
say you're in business, and somehow you'll make a fortune.
Maybe these people have some good ideas, but never will you
earn a living, on or off the net, without following the
rules. The laws of life are a mandatory lesson in life as
children are growing, learning. The law "As ye sow, so shall
ye reap." should be taught in all it's ramifications.
In my house we were taught, real early, there was no free
lunch. If we didn't get our chores done we didn't eat, it
was that simple. As a result we learned to share in the
workload around the house. We grumbled as we were first
learning the system, but after the first year it became a
habit and we just went ahead and did our chores.
I continue to do that today. I don't know how many times I
miss lazing around talking to guests, or plain don't want to
do something, but the chores come first, then play.
I learned early that if I want to eat I must work for it.
If you are thinking of doing business on the internet, you
best start out with that kind of attitude, for only through
diligent work will results appear.
For the young, there are literally zillions of opportunities
out there to earn a great deal of money, but not one is
without long, hard, diligent work. Do the chores first and
you will never have to ask in wonder - - -

I will never understand why folks don't take the time to

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Body Parts: Hands and Feet
PART 4 of 7
(Under the skin)
Now take away the skin and it's all very different! All of these
bones have a shiny whitish round area at each end. These are
condyles. Some are rounded one way and some the opposite way.
(concave and convex) That surface allows the bones to articulate
(fit) with each other. This occurs all through your body. Many
bones are hinged, meaning they can be flexible. They can be
hinged sideways, or go forward and backward. Some rotate. There
are medical terms that will describe their location and their
intended action. But what makes the attachment to the next bone?
Connective tissue. Special strong material that can support the
purpose of the joint. You can now appreciate that a hip joint
has much more weight to support than a finger joint.but each is
equally important. Some joints have pillows of cushions to help
absorb the shock or tension. That would happen in knees, and
elbows. (Also the tail bone.) If you have ever fallen directly
on your joint, elbow, or knee, you will have experienced an
unusual pad full of fluid that took ages to be re-absorbed. That
pillow really protects the joint.
Here's how many bones you have hands and feet of a healthy body
(with no "innards" removed)
Hands = 8 carpals, 5 metacarpals, 14 phalanges, = 54. Feet = 1
talus , 1 calcaneus, 7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges, =28
x2 = 56 = 110 bones
Let's work from the wrist (carpals) and the ankle (calcaneus and
tarsals).attached to the arms and the long bones of the legs.
The framework of the hands and feet are quite similar. You have
groups of bones that make up the wrist and ankle. The wrist is
made up of 8 small ones and many are different-shaped bones.
They need to be flexible, connected, and practical. The ankle is
made up of 7 bones with the same requirements. Generally the
hands and feet are padded quite similarly. There are lots of
muscles, blood vessels, nerves and nerve endings running
alongside. And in some instances, there is fatty tissue. And of
course our connective tissue again.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
I don’t know how often you have heard this one but, in
truth, it goes a very long way to helping with the global
warming issue. It means you are doing something positive on
the matter and that’s good.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
If there is a recycling program in your community,
recycle your newspapers, beverage containers, paper and
other goods. Use products in containers that can be recycled
and items that can be repaired or reused. In addition,
support recycling markets by buying products made from
recycled materials. Reducing, reusing, and recycling
in your home helps conserve energy and reduces pollution and
greenhouse gases from resource extraction, manufacturing,
and disposal.
The US and other governments are notoriously afraid to
respond to the global warming issue. I have no real idea why
unless they are afraid it might cost them more than they
bargained for. Guess what? It is going to cost all of us -
BIG TIIME.
There is no way we can avoid it and there is likely no way
government can change it. The best they can do is to
encourage us to do things that minimize the damage man is
doing.
I have studied this subject for over a year now and the
material is flowing faster and more pointed. Global warming
is going to change the way we live. This is not a doomsday
message. Just get ready for it mentally, physically and
emotionally.
Have a good day. See you tomorrow.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Vamp: Why are seductive women and firemen both called
"vamps"?
A seductive woman is called a "vamp" in allusion to the
"vampire" of folk lore - ghostly being that supposedly
sucked the blood of living persons. A fireman is called a
"vamp" because at one time in england "vamp" meant "to
tramp" or "walk" - and the volunteer firemen generally went
to the fires on foot.
