Were there really Children's Crusades?
Yes. There were actually two separate Children's
Crusades. The first, in 1212 was led by a French
peasant boy named Steven of Cloyes. Steven talked
more than thirty thousand boys and girls, most younger
than twelve, to follow him to Palestine. The children
met a bad end. Some drowned on the voyage over;
the rest died of disease or starved to death. Some
were sold as slaves by unscrupulous skippers. A
second Children's Crusade, led by another French
boy, Nicholas of Cologne, marched across the Alps.
Most of the twenty thousand (mostly German) kids
who followed Nicholas died of hunger or exhaustion.
The pope encouraged the survivors to go home.
How could parents let their kids go off on a Crusade?
Children were seen differently in medieval society
than they are now. In some sense, childhood didn't
really exist. According to The Disappearance of
Childhood by Neil Postman, kids over the age of
seven, who finally had command over speech, were
pretty much considered adults. In the Middle Ages,
kids worked and slept alongside adults and if they
went to school, it was often far from their families.
Postman postulates that the concept of kids being
kids beyond the age of seven came about when the
printing press was developed in the 16th century.
Why? The printing press "created a new definition of
adulthood based on reading competence, and,
correspondingly, a new concept of childhood based
on reading incompetence." Whether you accept
Postman's theory or not, it's also believed that
parents were less emotionally attached to children
in the Middle Ages than they are now, perhaps
because of the high infant mortality rate.

The 10 Cash Flow Rules You
Can't Afford to Ignore

The statistics on small business failure are alarming.
Michael Gerber, author of "The E-Myth: Why Most Small
Businesses Don't Work and What To Do About It", says that
40% of businesses fail in their first year. 80% fail within
their first five years.
THEY RAN OUT OF CASH.
Don't let this happen to you.
Here are 10 Rules to help you take control of your cash flow
so you can create the business you have always dreamed of.
1. Never Run Out of Cash.
Running out of cash is the definition of failure in
business. Make the commitment to do what it takes so it does
not happen to you.
2. Cash Is King
It's important to recognize that cash is what keeps your
business alive. Manage it with the care and attention it
deserves. It's very unforgiving if you don't.
Remember, Cash Is King, because No Cash = No Business.
3. Know the Cash Balance Right Now.
What is your cash balance right now? It's absolutely
critical that you know exactly what your cash balance is.
Even the most intelligent and experienced person will fail
if they are making business decisions using inaccurate or
incomplete cash balances. That's the reason why business
failures are not limited to amateurs or people new to the
business world.
4. Do Today's Work Today.
The key to keeping an accurate cash balance in your
accounting system is to do today's work today. When you do
this, you will have the numbers you need - when you need
them.
5. Either You Do the Work or Have Someone Else Do It.
Here is a simple rule to follow to make sure you have an
accurate cash balance on your books. You do the work or have
someone else do it.
Those are the only two choices you have. The work must be
done. It's like mowing the lawn. You can't just ignore it.
Someone has to do it. That means either you do it or you
have someone else do it.
6. Don't Manage From the Bank Balance.
The bank balance and the cash balance are two different
animals. Rarely will the two ever be the same. Don't make
the mistake of confusing them.
It's futile (and frustrating) to attempt to manage your cash
flow using the bank balance. It's a prescription for
failure. You reconcile your bank balance. You don't manage
from it.
7. Know What You Expect the Cash Balance to be Six Months
From Now.
What do you expect your cash balance to be six months from
now? This one question will transform the way you manage
your business.
This question really gets to the heart of whether you are
managing your business or whether your business is managing
you.
8. Cash Flow Problems Don't "Just Happen".
You would be shocked and amazed at the number of businesses
that fail because the owner did not see a cash flow problem
in time to do something about it.
The key is to always be able to answer the question - what
do I expect my cash balance to be six months from now?
9. You Absolutely, Positively Must Have Cash Flow
Projections.
Cash flow projections are the key to making wise and
profitable business decisions. They give you the answer to
the all-important question from Rule # 7.
It's impossible to run your business properly without them.
10. Eliminate Your Cash Flow Worries So You Are Free to Do
What You Do Best - Take Care of Customers and Make More
Money.

Flaxseed oil has the highest known concentration of
alpha-linolenic acid, the principal plant-source omega-3 PUFA.
Those wishing to adjust their diets to include more PUFAs
should substitute them for other fats, rather than merely
adding more fat to the diet. Sources of fats that promote
heart disease (i.e., saturated fats, trans-fatty acids) should
be reduced. These include butter, whole milk products,
red meat, pork, margarine, and some fast foods. Some of
Dr. Bannock's terms to explain what they are and how
they would apply to your life... What does "risk reductions"
mean? It simply means that if you make some lifestyle
changes, you decrease the chances of having a health
problem. In this case, it could be as easy as changing the
type and amount of fat you choose to eat. Why should you
want to tackle the "fat" issue? It is a practical and very
doable way to reduce your chance of cardiac problems.
Cardiac symptoms are very uncomfortable and chronic.
They curtail your lifestyle very dramatically. As the condition
deteriorates or degenerates, there is little joy or energy

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

The crooks were coming around now. When they
once more realized their plight they became angry.
The air was filled with all sorts of expletives. The
cursing was as raw as street talk could get.
They again attempted to get up, but kept slipping
in the dirty greasy oil. If any attempt looked promising
the kids would simply pull on the net and that would
cause the crook to stumble and fall again.
Just to ensure they would remain there the kids
threw two more buckets of oil on them. If there had
been any clean spot left it was now gone. The fresh
oil made things greasier.
The sandy floor under them was no help either for
not only did the oil stick all over them but so did the
sand. When they went to wipe their faces it gritted.
When they went to wipe their eyes they had to be
careful. A couple weren't.
The new batch of oil the kids threw at them got most
of them on the face. What a mess they were. They
had forgotten all about the money and were now
thinking on getting out of here.
The harder they tried the worse their condition
became. There was no coordinated effort at all and
the efforts of one undid the efforts of another. It wasn't
long before they were exhausted.
Nets have a way of being difficult at the best of
times. That is why they are used to capture animals.
The human animal fares no better than any animal.
When the police arrived they could hardly believe
their eyes. They had been told some crooks tried
to steal the money from the orphanage and that the
kids had them under control, but being adults, and
trained in police work, they could not believe any
kid could outsmart an adult.
They just stood there and looked, in amazement.
Then they broke out laughing. The sight was one
of complete failure of a plan. They marveled at
how ingenuity of the kids had brought everything
under control. From a practical point of view it
was marvelous.
The police began to roll up the net, toward the center,
and the crooks. As they got to them they required the
crooks put out their hands, which were promptly
handcuffed.
"Well aren't you guys the smart ones? Outsmarted
by some kids. You'll have lots to talk about in jail
won't you? I'll make sure the news gets out. You'll
be the laughing stock of the prison, boys."
With that they finally got all five men standing,
handcuffed and on the way to the police vehicles.
They were so dirty and grubby the police made
them sit on sheets of poly one of them rounded up.
Back in the orphanage the kids were relating the
story to a policeman who was writing down
everything he heard, just as fast as he could write.
"Sounds to me like they have an accomplice, the
one that made all the racket out in the front street.
Did any of you see anyone fitting?" asked the
policeman.
"No sir we didn't. We were paying too much attention
to these men. They had guns. One fired a shot. We
don't know where it went but we think it just went
into the ground because by that time the net was
on them." said one of the kids.
"You kids are to be commended. We have been
looking for these fellas for a long time. They go
around robbing stores at night, hoping to get cash.
That's what they wanted from you. Keep up your
vigil. There will be more folks who will try to take
what you have here." said the policeman.
Not long after, the police left and the reporters began
their relentless pursuit of a story. They asked
questions of the crowd out front. They asked
questions of the kids. They literally aggravated
every one they spoke with, with their insistence in
looking for something spectacular. That some
youngsters foiled some well thought out crooks was
not sufficient for them. That was too mundane.
Finally two or three of the bigger kids simply began
to herd the reporters out the back and required they
leave. The reporters took objection to that, but the
kids did not change their mind.
The kids knew the stories in the press would only
bring more attention to the shrine. They prepared
for an increase in crowds.
