TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Is it true that Canadians participated in the
US Civil War? Why?
Has the US ever provided a haven for Canadian
draft dodgers?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is "kuru"?
"Kuru" is the name given by the Fore people of
Papua New Guinea to a strange affliction that caused
victims to suffer from slurred speech and tremors,
walk unsteadily, and finally fall into a stupor that led
to death. The illness, which the Fore attributed to
sorcery, affected mostly women and children. An
American pediatrician and virologist sent to study
the disease in the 1950s soon found out why.
Dr. Carleton Gajdusek suspected kuru was an
epidemic disease related to the eating habits of Fore
women and children. Because they received less
protein than Fore men, they had created a ritual to
provide more: they ate dead tribe members instead
of burying them. This cannibalism was unfortunate,
because kuru turned out to be one of the transmissible
spongiform encephalopathies. When the women and
kids ate the brains of their diseased relatives, they
were also ingesting the infectious prions that
caused kuru.
What were "skedaddlers" in the nineteenth century?
"Skedaddlers" were US men who crossed over into
Canada during the Civil War to avoid being drafted.
Draft dodging was especially prevalent among men
living in states bordering Canada, such as New York,
New Hampshire, Maine, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
So many skedaddlers settled in a place in New Brunswick
that the area soon acquired the name "Skedaddle Ridge."
Following the Civil War, in 1864, an amnesty
proclamation enabled many skedaddlers to return
home to the US without facing punishment.

Are You The Next Oprah, or Bill Gates?
A 10-Minute Self-Test
by Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler
Could you be the next Oprah, Bill Gates -- or the next
huge internet success story? Take this 10-minute self-
test to discover if youre a natural CEO, or have John
F. Kennedy, Bill Gates, or Oprah-type leadership skills.
Choose ONE numbered item that best describes your
leadership style. Then scroll down to the Self Test
Answers to learn more about your leadership style,
and maybe even your business or personal destiny!
(((((Self-Test)))))
==>(1) I like to inspire others to my beliefs, then let
them take the necessary self-directed actions.
==>(2) I am non-emotional, and like to just jump in
and drive my team to achieve the goal at hand.
==>(3) I like to develop a general overall strategy
before I assign goal-directed responsibilities.
==>(4) I like to micro-analyze the challenge and
know exactly what it will to take to achieve a goal.
==>(5) I like to set a specific long-range goal, then
use a hands-off approach management approach.
==>(6) I just seem to know when something will
work, and use trial and error to guide my team.
==>(7) I enjoy a lot of personal interaction with my
team, and like to receive their input as we go along
(((((Self-Test answers)))))
1. Youre a charismatic leader. Your strong point
is your personal magnetism. You easily communicate
inspiring ideas. Your inspiration motivates a team to
belief and action. Youre a Gandhi or Martin Luther
King-type leader!
The team identifies with your energy, and by your
commitment. You inspire others to:
=Commit to a shared purpose or goal
=Help brainstorm new approaches to challenges
=Express their beliefs
2. Youre a goal-oriented leader. You use logic,
reason and planned behavior tools to achieve team
success. You're mentally tough, in control, and
communicate well. Your focus is on teamwork,
and making sure goals are achieved. Youd make
a great General!
You motivate your team using:
=Schedules and coordinated action
=Clearly stated procedures
=Organization
=Detailed facts and plans
3. Youre a strategic leader. You have objective
left-brain leadership skills. Youre a true rational
problem solver. You love to analyze a situation,
and lay out an overall team strategy to achieve the
goal. Youre like Henry Ford the creator of the
modern assembly-line method of manufacturing.
You manage using logical tools to:
=Analyze and compare several approaches
=Determine the most promising approach
=Set clear goals
=Decide who is best for what task
4. Youre a task-oriented leader with strong detail-
oriented analytical skills. You have a special talent
for micro-analyzing a problem or goal, and pre-
determining exactly how much time will be needed,
how much money will be required, etc. to ensure
success. Youre a natural Chief Financial Officer!
You tend to:
=Analyze exactly what tasks are required
=Pre-establish methods and procedures
=Assign specific tasks and guidelines
=Keep a project tightly organized
5. Youre a visionary leader. You like to create
a goal vision, then initiate action to achieve it.
You can start projects, but may prefer to be more
of a hands off manager. You seem to be a John
F. Kennedy type leader!
Visionary leaders ensure team success by:
=Creating a long-range goal
=Defining an overall strategy
=Attracting others to manage
=Keeping others inspired
6. Youre an intuitive leader. You dont prefer
rational step-by-step reasoning to make decisions.
You just seem to know when something will work,
often without logical evidence. Your wisdom isnt
explained with logic. Youre a shoot from the hip
young Bill Gates-type leader!
You tend to:
=Have, and follow, hunches
=React quickly and intuitively
=Use trial and error to solve problems
7) Youre an interactive leader. Youre deeply
aware of the feelings and emotions of others. You
have great leadership skills, and are a relationship
expert. You communicate easily, are spontaneous,
and show your feelings openly. Youre a loyalty-
inspiring down in the trenches type leader.
Youre an Oprah-type leader!
You tend to:
=Maintain strong relationships
=Stay in touch with your staff
=Express genuine concern for others
Leadership is at the core of business and personal
success. This is true whether you're leading a team,
OR leading your own self. The most extraordinary
leaders are those who have built a powerful, no-
limits self-concept. But no one is born this way,
it's a learned (and learnable) personal trait.

Do You Have Trouble Staying Awake After A Meal?
This Might Be The Reason...
(Healthy Habits Aren't Convenient . . . They're A Choice.)
PART 5 of 6
So in a nutshell, try smaller, more frequent meals, adequate
fluids, especially water, and a good balance of protein rich
foods to carbohydrates. And if you can, have your protein
and carbohydrate meals separately. There's the balance
part again. So speed up digestion by eating these foods in
separate meals and have as few meals as possible that
include both, but have these small meals spaced throughout
the day, so the digestive process is not overwhelmed at
certain times. Someone suggested this as a good
experiment . . .
A glass of water upon arising (rehydration) // Have a high
quality meal replacement drink for breakfast // A few sips of
water 30 minutes later // A high quality meal replacement
drink, high in fibre for a snack // A few sips of water 30
minutes later //
A chicken Caesar salad or tuna salad or chef salad or egg
salad or bean salad or turkey salad or seafood salad for
lunch //. . . (that's the protein & veggies meal)//. A few sips
of water 30 minutes later // Perhaps Nuts & Raisins while
working at the computer for snack
A few sips of water 30 minutes later // And a rice salad,
pasta salad, or baked potato & salad, and yummy corn on
the cob or stirfry veggies for dinner . . . Anyway, you get the
idea of a starch & veggies for dinner . . . // Then, end the
evening with a few more sips of water before bed. // Try
something along those lines and see how you feel . . . If
you keep your blood sugar balanced throughout the day,
sip water during the day, all of that will help and your meals
will naturally become smaller.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
Bob Hunter had tears in his eyes from seeing his
daughter and his wife hug and greet one another.
As the family moved up the steps to the porch, he
moved toward his daughter and held out his arms.
Pam ran to her Father. She hugged him and they
both cried. He whispered into her ear, "Pam, I'm
sorry for what I said at our last meeting. Please
forgive me."
"I love you Daddy. Thank you for having me back."
and she gave her Dad a big kiss on the cheek.
Bob stepped forward from hugging Pam, and shook
David's hand, "Hello David, good to see you."
"Good to see you too, sir." said David quietly.
Neither Pam nor David knew if this was real or just
the first greetings. They decided to act as if nothing
had ever happened between them in the past.
"Oooh Pam!" said her Mother, "You have a new baby.
What is the name?" she asked, not yet knowing if the
child was a boy or a girl.
"Mae Eloise." Momma, "She is now four months old
and a real sweetheart.
"Look at the tan little Maz has. How old is he
now?" asked Pam's Father.
"He's two, Daddy. He'll be three in a couple months.
How are you two doing?" asked Pam.
"Come in, come in you guys, Its cold out
here." said Lynn Hunter.
"It would be Mother, in only a housecoat." observed Pam.
"Oh, I know. I'm getting lazy in my old age Pam. I've
been sitting around in this thing since eight this
morning. I'll go get dressed shortly, but come on into
the kitchen and sit. Let's have a coffee. I haven't seen
nor talked with you for so long I want you to bring me
completely up to date." replied her Mother.
"Not much to tell Mother. Life goes on as usual." said Pam.
"That's not true, Pam, you've had a baby since we
last saw you, and you called her Mae Eloise. Is Mae
still down there with you? If Eloise Henry still down
there? Come on tell me everything." Lynn demanded.
"Yes, Mom, Mae is still there and she loves it. She is
a great help with the kids. Eloise got herself married
to the leader of the village and is very, very happy. We
see Mr. and Mrs Henry fairly regular. Eloise is going
to have a baby." Pam answered.
"David, how are you? Tell us about yourself. What do
you work at?" asked Bob Hunter.
"Well, Mr. Hunter, life is different down there. I don't
work at anything. I like to carve a canoe or two every
so often but helping Pam, helping friends and the like
is mostly what I do." replied David, thinking we were
now bordering on the subjects that would create tension.
Bob Hunter backed off that one a little. He knew he
would have his wife to contend with if he started in
discussing work and things like that.
Lynn Hunter put coffees down on the table and without
taking hers went and took the baby out of Pam's arms.
"Ooo, Pam, she is so cute."
The ladies were off. They would talk of baby and children
things for an hour.
"What do you mean, David, that life is different down
there?" asked Bob.
"Well, the weather is warm for most of the time. For a good
part of the year we have the rainy season. That is happening
now and will last at least another two months. During the
rainy season nobody does much. It is just plain too wet.
During the rest of the year the women will pick and process
fruit, tree roots and leaves, and other things they find to
eat. The men will go fishing or hunting once in a while,
but mostly laze around. Its too hot to work too hard or too
long. The river is the main source of food for the whole
village." answered David.
"But don't you have a house? Don't you work? Don't you
have money? How does the system work. Don't you have
government?" asked Bob Hunter, who was entirely ignorant
of where and how David and Pam lived.

The Pope was finishing his sermon.
He ended it with the Latin phrase, "Tuti Homini" - (which
means Blessed be Mankind).
A women's rights group approached the Pope the next day.
They complained that the pope blessed all Mankind, but not
Womankind.
The next day, after His sermon, the Pope concluded by
saying, "Tuti Homini, et Tuti Femini" - (which means
Blessed be Mankind and Womankind).
The next day, a gay-rights group approached the Pope.
They said that they noticed that he blessed man kind and

The Pope said, "Sure". The next day, the Pope concluded
