How did Chinese footbinding work? What made the
foot stay tiny?
When I was a child, I used to imagine that Chinese women
who had undergone footbinding had miniature, perfectly
formed feet. I was under the impression that wearing tiny
shoes simply made feet stop growing, since there wasn't
any room to grow. Chinese footbinding was not so simple
and painless, however. To make the feet tiny, the toes were
bent backwards underneath the sole and tightly tied into
place. Eventually, the toes would be broken beneath the
foot and would grow into the bottom of the foot. It was an
extremely painful process that made women hobble instead
of walk. That's why only aristocratic women could do it. They
didn't need to walk around much. Poor women, who needed
to work in the fields or about the house, would not have
been able to do so on bound feet. And the feet were not
miniature, perfectly formed feet either. They were lumps of
misshapen flesh hidden by ornate shoes.
What famous politician died on the day he always feared

Winston Churchill, prime minister of England during
World War II, superstitiously feared January 24 because
he was certain it was destined to be the day of his death.
Churchill's father had died on that date. Churchill did indeed

Like Father, Like Son
Amazon.com and Microsoft have jointly filed a suit against
Ontario-based Gold Disk Canada, an accused father-son
spamming/phishing team. Barry Head and his two sons
Eric and Matthew, are accused of using Microsoft's Hotmail
and Amazon.com's name in illegal e-mail campaigns.
Both companies have previously filed suits against
spammers.
Microsoft Does Windows for Cheap
What do you do when your product is widely pirated and is
losing market share to an upstart competitor? If you're
Microsoft, you fight back with lower-priced software. Microsoft
announced that it will release a $36, limited-features version
of Windows for the Russian market, where pirated copies of
the OS abound (over four-fifths of software on computers in
Russia are estimated to be illegal copies) and Linux is
making inroads into the market. The company has released
similar products for Southeast Asian markets with similar
conditions.

revenues by 2009. The study concludes that by 2009 the

The total market value for services using VoIP is forecast to
grow almost ten fold over the next five years. During that
time, VoIP will evolve to providing truly converged services

Use Medications Wisely
Do you have only one doctor who treats your problems and
prescribes your drugs?
Do you usually have all your prescription filled at the same
place?
Are you aware of the possible side effects of any of your
medications? Do you have the courage to ask your doctor
to explain anything you can't understand?
Do you discuss ALL your drugs and supplements with your
pharmacist?
The answer to all these questions should be YES! You have
only one body and you need to keep it healthy. Having
different doctors and going to different pharmacies will only
cause confusion and possible harm. By staying with the same
health professionals, they get to know you and your needs:
you get to know them and how to ask personal questions.
Chances are you will go through some very private
examinations and you need to do that with confidence
and trust.
Any kind of chemicals going into your body will cause a shift
in the cell composition. It doesn't matter if they are prescription
drugs, "over the counter" (OTC) cough meds, vitamins, or
herbs. Even the word "natural product" doesn't mean harmless
or without effect. Use several of these and you can easily
create problems for which you will need some help.
Use your health professional wisely. Pharmacists are trained
in everything to do with drugs, including nutritional supplements.
Doctors are trained in diseases: body systems and functions.
Use each one to maximize their knowledge and training. One
stop shopping is all right for food, but your body deserves

and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,

only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.

Mae and the women working with her had set up
a makeshift camp some ways down stream from the
base of the ridge. There she was attending to the
wounded the attackers had brought in.
Abetta, Riata, Mae and Shing Li were careful
to prevent any display of hatred on the part of
the villagers. This was the time for mercy and for
love. It was plain the attackers had suffered much
more at the hands of the villagers than the
villagers had suffered. The work was long and
hard.
Mae and Riata manifested, unseen, bandages and
medical supplies as needed. Cleanliness was the
biggest concern.
The next thing to worry about was the removal
of dead flesh from the stream. It would
contaminate the water supply for those downstream.
If the animals were removed from the water and
put up on the banks, insects, animals and
birds would remove them and there would be no
residue to contaminate anything. Mae organized a
group of men to get that job done.
The work went on for three days before there
was a semblance of order. The attackers were
nursed, fed, rested and prepared to leave. They
did not leave until the last of them was ready.
At that they looked a sorry bunch. Defeat weighed
heavily on their minds and hearts. But that isn't
really what they were thinking about. How could
these people, led by these angels, come to help
them like that? These were miracle people. One can
never defeat them.
Mae and the others cleaned up the site and the
villagers climbed the hill once more to take care
of their own.
Mae knew they would not fully understand what
they had just done. There was a sadness among
them over their dead, and there was a tiredness.
The group of "angels" decided to stay one more
day. They all rested in the village, regaining
much needed energy.
At dusk Mae called them all together. She
wanted to speak to them.
"You are wondering where we came from and why
we are here. Moreover you are wondering why we
asked you to help with the wounded attackers. We
were called by friends of ours to come help you
out. When we arrived we could see what was
happening. Your defenses are well thought out and
were highly successful. However, when the fighting
was done, had you let the attackers go their own
way, they would revisit you and attack again. When
you went down to help them that was something they
did not expect. So now they think that not only
are you impregnable, you are angels. You came down
to help them in their time of distress. They are
going home now talking all the way about the
village of angels. You may rest very well assured
now that you will be talked about for thousands of
miles around. You are a special people, a
spiritual people. You have special powers. From
now on your enemies will think you have no gold
because you have no need of it. They will know
that to attack you is certain defeat, that you
have special powers and cannot be attacked without
great cost. These are the reasons why we asked you
to come with us to help your enemy. He will not be
back."
When Mae finished there was much talk amongst
the villagers. There was murmur everywhere.
Finally one man stood. He was an older
gentleman and obviously the village elder. "We
thank you for what you did. We have talked. We
believe you are right. We think the enemy now
thinks we are a special people and he will not
attack. Thank you for your help."
Mae walked over to him and took his hand to
shake it. "We will go now."
With that Mae walked back to where the others
were and all of them, Riata, Abetta and Shing Li
started to walk to the pathway that took them down
the cliffs to the valley below. The further away
from the village they got the harder it was to see
them, until, finally, they simply vanished.
Assembling once more at Abetta's they all sat
down and had a beverage.
"That was a lot of work" said Shing Li, "Is
this what you do to help mankind?"
"This kind of thing happens, Shing Li. Around
the world it happens too often. It is sponsored by
greed. Man is like that and until he changes or
something happens to change him we will always
have insurrection and bloodshed. Higher law not
only helps us avoid that kind of thing, it gives
us power to intervene and help out."
"But Mae, why does man do this. What was to
gain for those attackers? When the battle was done
they had lost far more than their opponents. Why
couldn't they see that before they began?"
"It is in the nature of man, Shing Li, to
think he is capable of many things, especially
when he thinks there is something to gain. Men all
over the world do it. I am not faulting man's
normal curiosity that drives him to climb
mountains or create new technology, or explore to
learn more about his universe. But man has a long
way to go before he is reluctant to attack his
neighbor, if he thinks his neighbor has something
he wants."
