Classified Ads - What Works & What Doesn't

Do classified ads really work? Should you include an email
address or fax number in them? How about a call to action?
Questions like these are often brought to the attention of
OhioHelp.net, an Ohio-based company specializing in helping
businesses worldwide with their marketing, public relations
and freelance writing services. Here are some top tips they
offer based on their own client projects.
TOP TIPS FROM OHIOHELP.NET
I. CLASSIFIED AD PLACEMENT
Study the ads in publications where you would like to place
yours to see what works. And STUDY them like you'll have
an exam over them. If you didn't see the ad before, skip it.
Only focus on those who repeatedly placed the same ads - -
these people are selling off of them: bottom line.
While you?re at it, call some of those companies who are
not your direct competitors and ask how their ads pull (and
log their replies for reference). Exchange contact information
and follow up so that you can possibly team up with them
later in a joint venture and send clients back and forth.
Results show that small ads placed in inexpensive
publications generally bring in phone calls and clicks to
websites, but no email replies. And on the average, these
callers reported having limited or no Internet access along
with limited or no computer / email capabilities in their
homes. If they had access at work, it was limited and did
not offer personal / private email. Toll-free numbers brought
in more responses than local numbers with area
codes. And fax numbers brought in nothing at all.
II. CLASSIFIED AD GIFTS
Sales increased with the inclusion of Gift and Reward
items in a call-to-action ad. Popular items were:
A. A No-Cost Information Kit that included a variety of
tip sheets, electronic books and software sent via
downloadable links in printed sales letters and included
on disks or CDs. All items were mailed Flat Rate via
Priority Mail.
B. A Book / workbook set sent the same way or mailed
Media Rate in a manila envelope. Sets were for a trial
period before purchasing. And No-Cost Information Kits
above were included in the package.
C. A special ?Freebie? item of their choice from our
bookstore was mailed or emailed with mention of
the ad.
III. CLASSIFIED AD COPYWRITING
To increase customer contact, communication and
overall sales, include specific pricing in the ad; for
example, say, ?rates from $39.? Also list an email address
with a domain name and specific person to contact. In
other words, instead of emailing info@aol.com, email
diana@ohiohelp.net using a first name for familiarity.
(Note that some classifieds charge a 3-word count
for URLs but only a 1-word count for email addresses.)
And use an action verb in your call-to-action, ?Mention
Ad for??
IV. CLASSIFIED TIPS
Remember:
Keep up. Keep educating yourself and your helpers. For

A Quick Lesson On Sinuses
Your sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces within the
bones of your face, behind and above your nose.
Sinus means a cavity or hollow, but we see them as
part of our breathing apparatus The lining of the
sinuses produces a soft gel-like fluid called mucous,
and tiny hairs, called cilia.
What is its function?
The mucous and cilia humidify and warm the air you
breathe, aid your sense of smell, and improve the
sound of your voice. There is a constant sweeping
by theses cilia of mucus out of your sinuses and into
your nose and throat through small openings which
cleans and moisturises your nasal passages.
Why is it a problem when the sinuses don't
function properly?
When the sinus linings become infected, usually due
to viruses or bacteria, they may swell, causing an
obstruction and interfering with normal drainage of
mucus. Infection causes swelling, which makes it
even harder for your sinuses to drain, causing
pressure pain headache fever, and local tenderness.
Things you can do to help yourself.
Drink plenty of liquids to help dilute the secretions.
Have you ever "steamed" your face? It feels so good.
A quick method is to fill a sink with very nice warm
water, gently put your head over the waves of steamy
warm water, and place a towel over you and the sink.
Inhale a couple of times, but don't prolong it. Just
feel the warm breeze on your face. Applying warm
facial packs work, too. Be careful not to scald yourself.
Avoid bending over with your head down. This can
cause more pain and pressure.

you fail to satisfy them, because you know it to
be wrong, then they call you names and drum up
opposition unto you. Such is the way of man. Keep
unto yourself and your Maker will lead you to aid
those who require assistance. Keep it simple and
all life can be a beauty."
"Miss Mae, I want to learn higher law, too."
Psong was speaking calmly and with purpose.
"Psong, my beloved Psong, you already know
higher law. Your very life is the personification
of the great law to love all as your Maker has
loved you. I will work with you so you, too,
believe. You already know what to do. It will only
take some practice, and we shall do that beginning
tomorrow."
"I would like that."
With that they all went into the house and
went to sleep. The day had been a very long one,
and the changing of time zones has its effect on
all, even those who live by higher law. The only
advantage they have is they can re-energize at
will.
The following day was bright and warm. It was
one of those days one just wants to sit and praise
the powers that be for such a wonder.
The household had breakfast out on the porch.
It was too nice to stay inside. Tlang and Wong Li
were speaking with Shing Li about the fun they had
at the orphanage. They enjoyed the kids there and
wanted to go back. They also spoke of the fire,
thinking they wanted one of their own every night.
That is the way with kids all over the world.
They get pretty enthusiastic about the things they
like.
Then it happened. Right in front of all of
them little Tsung took his first few steps. Shing
Li was overjoyed. She clapped and went over to
give the little guy a big hug. Then she stood him
up and moved away from him, asking him to come to
her. Again he walked a few steps. The young man
was on his way. From this day he would expand his
walks every day until he got the hang of it, and
from then on he would be in his Mother's way
wherever she went. Soon, though, he would want to
play with Tlang and Wong Li. They would let him
and all three would have much fun together. There
was no fighting in this house. Shing Li just did
not permit it.
All were happy with the event. It was a step
toward independence not only for Tsung, but for
Shing Li and Psong as well. It would not be long
before the entire family was fully mobile.
Psong had a tear in her eye. "This means this
little guy will no longer need me as he once did.
I know it is right that they grow and become fully
capable citizens, but I like them at this age. I
don't want them to grow up. Yet children are
beautiful at whatever age they reach."
"They are Psong" said Susan, "Look at the
wonderful relationship you have with Tlang. She,
too, will grow and become a woman, and at every
age they are a blessing."
"You are right Sue. I know. It is just so
beautiful that he took his first step, but it
means he is no longer the dependent little boy I
used to carry on my hip. That time is passing."
"There will be other times, places and people,
Psong. As you live by higher law the whole world
becomes you nursery." Susan was showing her the
field of view she had was about to change.
"I know. I think I am about to undergo such a
change myself. We all grow, all the time. We all
change. That is how it should be. I am glad about
that. I am glad I met you and Mae. That was a good
day for me and I know it just gets better from
here."
