What is a "photon"?
A "photon" is the smallest possible amount of light that can

Do black widow spiders always eat their mates?
Only sometimes. The black widow spider is not the
mate-killing menace she's been chalked up to be. It is true
that occasionally a male spider who hangs around too
long after mating or who doesn't send the proper signals
before approaching is eaten by the larger female. But that's
because his behavior indicates an intruder, not a lover. If
he sends the correct signals and gets off the scene before
the female's hunger causes her to become predatory
again, he often survives.

Catalog Consumers Browse On Paper, But Shop Online
By Ross Fadner Staff Writer
Consumers who shop from catalogs are making more
purchases by clicking a mouse, and less by dialing the
phone, according to a new report from DoubleClick
catalog/retail unit Abacus. Released yesterday, the 2004
Abacus Annual Catalog Industry Trend Report says that
Web site sales are likely to surpass call-center sales
within the next 18-24 months.
Consumers have traditionally made catalog purchases
by telephoning call centers, but according to the new
report, online sales accounted for a full one-third of
catalog purchases in 2003. This is expected to increase
to 36 percent in 2004 and 40 percent in 2005, at the
expense of call-centers' and in-store's shares of sales.
In 2003, in-store sales represented 24 percent, and
call-center sales, 43 percent.
John Black, Abacus Product Manager and author of the
trend report, said that the marketing strategies of
traditionally offline and online retailers are starting to
converge. Because of this, he underscored the
importance for catalog marketers of measuring and
managing sales generated by all sales channels,
which includes call-center, Web site, in-store, and
other direct response Web channels such as search,
affiliate, and e-mail.
Black said marketers' offline and online measurement
and management strategies "can no longer be siloed."
Rather, marketers need to focus on monitoring all
campaigns together, he said, or they run the risk of
diluting the effectiveness of the collective effort by
as much as 50 percent.

Lawmaker Asks FTC To Ensure Nielsen Ratings Are
'Run Fairly'
Prospects for regulatory oversight and possibly even
legislation to regulate Nielsen's control over TV ratings
became more likely on Thursday when an influential
lawmaker called on the Federal Trade Commission to
take "action to ensure that the television ratings industry
is run fairly and in the best interest of the public." The
request follows one made earlier this year by the
American Association of Advertising Agencies for
the FTC to probe Nielsen's monopolistic control
over TV ratings.

Why All Vitamins Are NOT the Same
PART 4 of 4
From the manufacturers perspective, costs happen in a
variety of ways. These would include certain
ingredients, packaging, research, money to meet (or
choose not to meet) certain standards, and a host of
others. Their goal has to be very strong and viable.
They will have a great deal of money invested in
facilities as well. They have to do a lot of market
research to discover what the public wants. Otherwise
their investment is at risk. The safety net for you
is their participation in and compliance with FDA
regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
Look for these assurances on the product label. One
really trustworthy resource to check with is the
Physicians Desk Reference PDR. You can free
access http://physician.pdr.net/pdrnet/librarian
Another excellent resource is: Lyle MacWilliams
Comparative Guide To Nutritional Supplements 3rd
edition http://www.macwilliam.net
You may feel you just want to walk over to the shelf
and pick up a quality multivitamin. Or you may choose
to be educated and careful with both your money and
your body. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to
visit a well-known manufacturing facility. It was like
the clean rooms in NASA. I was really impressed with
the environment. A few months later, I happened to be
in a business park of automotive specialists. The
reception room doubled as the repacking center for a
nutritional supplement company. The owner proudly
showed me his bulk inventory, slowly scooping up the
tablets in his hands. Obviously, there are many
different types of manufacturers. Choose yours
carefully, with insight and foresight. Be prepared to
buy the level of quality that meets your health needs.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Ben and Sam walked up to Helen and Alewka.
They were in a group of people that included the
Whites, and Tom, Tim and Billy. The love that was
being broadcast from this group was so strong it
enveloped everyone within a block of the nursing
station. All were comforted.
"Tim! Tim! Oh! I tried to reach you and see if
you were all right. You didn't answer your phone
and when I tried to call you with my mind I got
nowhere. Are you all right?" Sharon Smithson had
seen Tim in the group at the nursing station and
came running up. She was accompanied by her father
and one brother.
"Hi Sharon." Tim went over to her and gave her
a hug in public. "Hi Bob. Glad you are here. My
whole family is here except for my sister. Can I
introduce you to my folks?"
"That would be fine Tim."
They walked over to the group and Tim made
introductions all around. Bob Smithson was a
little surprised to see Ben and Helen Striker
there and the Whites, Jim and HIlda.
"This was some blast. I think it even broke
windows at my place. What happened?"
"They don't know yet, officially, but it is
our guess they will find a gas leak in the
basement of the sporting goods store. It must have
built up for some time and then something
triggered the ignition. It sure did a lot of
damage. Pinehill folk are going to talk about this
for quite a while." Ben Striker responded to Bob's
question.
"You're our former police chief aren't you Mr.
Striker?"
"Yes, Bob. But retirement age came and I
wanted to join my friend here in his helping those
who need help. Sam and I go a long way back, but
only recently has he helped me learn to live by
higher law. I know of the difficulty you have had
understanding what higher law is Bob, but fear
not. At times like this it sure is a help to those
in need." Ben Striker wanted the subject front and
center, and he wanted to leave no doubt in Bob
Smithson's mind that he, too, lived by higher law.
That way it was no longer "the Henry's". It now
included more people.
Bob Smithson got the message. His mind was
racing. He knew his daughter had told him but that
was only hearsay. Now it was fact and he could no
longer avoid the knowledge.
A member of the shocked, from within the group
who was still calming down at the nursing station
came over to the group. She put her arms around
Tim and hugged him and cried on his shoulder.
"Thank you young man. If it had not been for you I
would probably be dead now. You saved my life and
the lives of many others. I will not forget this
Mr. Henry."
Tim was a little embarrassed. "It is fine
Ma'am. I did nothing. The fire was burning and you
were caught. I was able to help so I did. Think
nothing of it. You would have done the same for
me."
"Mr. Henry, I'm not so sure. You walked into
that burning building without protection and
against the orders of the police and firemen. I am
glad you did, but not even they could get in. You
are a miracle worker, no doubt. I used to think
you and your family were of the devil. I did not
think it possible to do the things you have done
here today. Many of us owe our lives to you. Thank
you. Thank you." She gave Tim another hug and
stole a quick kiss on the cheek, then left.
"That was some display" Sharon pointed out.
"It was nothing Sharon. She is just
overexcited about all this. She was a pretty
scared lady. I just helped her out of the
building. That's all."
"Tim, I think you are far too modest. I was
watching some television before we decided to come
down and see what was happening. We saw time and
again you folks going into these buildings even in
the midst of flames. It showed you on television,
all of you. It was fantastic, amazing, incredible.
It is plain many would have died had it not been
for the men and women in this group. I take my hat
off to you."
"Bob. Don't, please. Don't make more of it
than it is. We seek no attention. We only wanted
to help. We don't even want thanks. Let's just
leave it be." Tim spoke softly but with
conviction.
"If you say so, but the television is full of
it. It will be replayed over and over. You should
know that."
"I was afraid of that." Sam Henry spoke. "The
last time we got in the news this way it was
because of that Ted Kuzik with WHRC. I suppose we
will have the same thing again, people outside our
houses looking for miracle after miracle."

----------------------
Once upon a time there lived a man named Clarence who
had a pet frog named Felix. Clarence lived a modestly
comfortable existence on what he earned working at the
local Wal-Mart, but he always dreamed of being
rich.
"Felix!" he exclaimed one day "We're going to be rich! I'm
going to teach you how to fly!"
Felix, of course, was terrified at the prospect. "I can't fly, you
idiot! I'm a frog, not a canary!"
Clarence, disappointed at the initial reaction, told Felix "That
negative attitude of yours could be a real problem. I'm
sending you to class."
So Felix went to a three day class and learned all about
problem solving, time management, and effective
communication. . . but nothing about flying.
On the first day of lessons, Clarence could barely control his
excitement. He explained that their apartment building had
15 floors, and each day Felix would jump out of a window
starting with the first floor, eventually getting to the top floor.
After each jump, Felix would analyze how well he flew,
isolate on the most effective flying techniques, and implement
the improved process for the next flight. By the time they
reached the top floor, Felix would surely be able to fly.
Felix pleaded for his life, but it fell on deaf ears. He just
doesn't understand how important this is, thought Clarence,
but I won't let nay-sayers get in the way. So with that,
Clarence opened the window and threw Felix out [who
landed with a thud].
Next day, poised for his second flying lesson, Felix again
begged not to be thrown out the window. With that Clarence
opened his pocket guide to Managing More Effectively
and showed Felix the part about how one must always
expect resistance when implementing new programs.
And with that, he threw Felix out the window. (THUD)
On the third day (at the third floor window) Felix tried a
different ploy: stalling. He asked for a delay in the project
until better weather would make flying conditions more
favorable. But Clarence was ready for him: he produced
a project time line and pointed to the third milestone
and asked "You don't want to slip the schedule, do you?"
From his training Felix knew that not jumping today
would mean that he would have to jump TWICE
tomorrow. . . so he just said "OK. Let's go." And out
the window he went. (THUD)
Now this is not to say that Felix wasn't trying his best. On
the fifth day he flapped his feet madly in a vain attempt to
fly. On the sixth day he tied a small red cape around his
neck and tried to think Superman thoughts. But try as he
may, he couldn't fly.
By the seventh day, Felix, accepting his fate, no longer
begged for mercy .. he simply looked at Clarence and said
"You know you're killing me, don't you?"
Clarence pointed out that Felix's performance so far had
been less than exemplary, failing to meet any of the
milestone goals he had set for him.
With that, Felix said quietly "Shut up and open the window."
And he leaped out, taking careful aim on the large jagged
rock by the corner of the building.
And Felix went to that great lily pad in the sky.
Clarence was extremely upset, as his project had failed
to meet a single goal that he set out to accomplish.
Felix had not only failed to fly, he didn't even learn to steer his
flight as he fell like a sack of cement ... nor did he improve his
productivity when Clarence told him to fall smarter, not harder.
The only thing left for Clarence to do was to analyze the
process and try to determine where it had gone wrong.
After much thought, Clarence smiled and said "Next time ...
I'm getting a smarter frog!"
(Does Clarence sound like anyone you know?)
