What Dr. Seuss book was written to win a bet?
"Green Eggs and Ham," one of Dr. Seuss' most popular
titles, was the result of a bet between Dr. Seuss (Theodor
Geisel) and the founder of Random House, Bennett Cerf.
Dr. Seuss wagered that he could write a book using only
50 words and Cerf bet him he couldn't. Dr. Seuss won, but
never collected the money.
Why are the buttons on men's and women's clothes on
opposite sides?
Well, it's like this: since most people are right-handed, the
holes on men's clothes have buttons on the right--to make
it easier for men to push them through the holes. Well, that's
easy, but aren't women mostly right-handed too? Women's
buttons are on the OPPOSITE side so their maids can dress
them. When buttons were first used, they were expensive
and only wealthy women had them. Since a maid faces the
woman she is dressing, having the buttons on the left of the
dress places them on the maid's right.

Is Your Perspective Different?
by Ken Darby
Two young country lads were bored one summer day
and decided it would be fun to push over the outhouse.
They snuck up like a couple of spys, pushed it over,
then ran laughing into the woods. When they returned
home later, their father called them over. "Did you two
push over the outhouse this afternoon?" he
demanded. The older boy nodded. "I learned in
school that I cannot tell a lie. Yes, father, we did
push over the outhouse."
Their father whipped them and sent them to bed
without supper. In the morning, he asked them,
"Have you two learned your lesson?"
"Yes, father," the older boy said, looking confused.
"But in school we learned that George Washington
admitted to his father that he had chopped down a
cherry tree and he was forgiven because he told the
truth!"
Their father nodded. "That's true. But George's
father wasn't IN the cherry tree when he chopped
it down!"
I imagine that perspective might have a bearing on how
one would react. It seems perfectly logical to me Dad would
be upset, and that he would be not nearly so upset had
he not been in the outhouse.
That kind of thing happens to us all the time in daily life.
Our perspective, our point of view is always that spot from
which our mind is currently set. For example if your child
comes up to you and wants you to play with them, and
everything is all right with you, then you may decline
politely, or even go play with them. However, if you are
already angry because you just had a rip snortin' fight
with your spouse or significant other, you are more prone
to telling the child to go get lost, and that in an angry tone.
So, you see, your perspective affects how you react to
certain circumstances.
Guess what? It affects the way others react to you as well.
Others will react to you according to two things: first,
according to their own perspective and, second, according
to how you react to them. Think on that.
Is it any wonder folks have trouble getting along? And then
we throw into the mix certain attitudes toward ethnic groups
and toward religious groups and toward other groups. Now
tell me how it is that we can get along at all.
I often suggest to my kids it is far better to have a chosen,
standard perspective through which to view the world, one
that you don't permit emotion to influence. I recommend
they adopt a businesslike attitude toward all, equally, and
without emotion at any point or time. I suggest they remain
calm in all circumstances and that they keep their eye on
the ball, meaning that they choose what outcome they want
before they begin and keep pressing in that direction.
Because emotion can lead one down the garden path I
recommend they learn to put it aside when dealing with
others, that they can deal with emotion inside themselves
at another time when it is less likely to affect outcomes.
That way they can be and remain in charge of their lives.
They can be responsible for what happens to them and
around them, and they can guide circumstances to their
pleasure.

What If...You Really Believed You
Could Feel Well Again?
PART 6 of 10
To use the bio-degradable cleaner/surfactant would have
meant that they were fools, too. Of course, it doesnt make
any sense, but this kind of response is not unusual. Human
beings often invest in their own failure time and time again.
Its easy to do. Going against the tide of conventional
wisdom takes courage. It is always easier to go with the
flow. Follow the old standards even when all the evidence
says go the other way. Remember all the experts told
Christopher Columbus the world was flat. In the third year
this Amish farmer started buying up the land his neighbors
were forced to sell. They went out of business rather than
see the Good the Universe had sent them. They could have
watched their friend succeed and jumped on the band
wagon, but they didnt. They were looking for peer approval
not success. They couldnt recognize the Good glaring
them in the face because they were looking through the
eyes of limitation not possibility. One of the neighbors of
the now rich Amish farmer did decide to try the
biodegradable surfactant/cleaner on his soy beans. He
was so angry at the cost of the expensive fertilizer that
he used the cleaner/surfactant on his entire soy bean crop.
His friend had encouraged him to test only half the crop.
At the end of the year this new farmer had made more
money than ever before. Just like his friend. He admitted
to having the best bean crop in sixteen years. So what
do you think he did? You probably guessed it, he went
back to using anhydrous-ammonia fertilizer the very next
year. Why? Maybe he didnt believe in himself. Maybe it
was more important to be part of a group than a success.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Tim and Sharon suddenly appeared. They arrived
just in time to witness Hemno far in the distance,
embarking on his journey. "I sensed you needed a
new "boy" in the house." Tim laughed.
"Tim, Sharon, it is so good to see you."
Sonora ran up to them and gave each of them a hug.
"Hello you two. It is good of you to visit
just at this time. We are both sad and happy at
the events of this day. We have lost a boy but
will gain a man. Hemno will be gone for a year,
and when he returns he will be a man." Kenyata
wiped a solitary tear from her cheek and came over
to give Sharon and Tim a hug.
"I am glad it is his time. It comes to all of
us." Tim watched once more as Hemno's image was
slowly disappearing amongst the heat waves that
disguised everything in this land.
"I don't understand" Sharon responded, not
knowing what was going on.
"Sharon, when a young boy or a young girl go
through puberty in this land they go through
certain rituals. The rituals are designed to keep
them apart, so the village will not be burdened
with children being born from unacceptable unions,
and they are designed to allow each to find
themselves and define who and what they will be.
Hemno is now 14. He is reacting in all ways as a
man does toward sexual matters. It is his time to
be alone, to find himself, to get control of
himself, to determine who and what he will be upon
his return home. He will face danger, starvation
and great thirst. Yet, when he returns home he
will be a man of confidence, of strength, of
power, and, hopefully, of compassion." Tim tried
to explain in terms Sharon understood.
"Is that not a little harsh?"
"Not in this land, Sharon. One must always be
prepared in this land and this custom helps
prepare men for the lives they must lead. It has
been this way for centuries and will not change."
"Is that why you are both sad and happy?
Because today you lost a boy and tomorrow you will
regain a man?"
"Yes, Sharon" responded Kenyata, "In this land
life can be hard. Hemno must learn to survive on
his own so he can properly lead his family in
times when he must. They must have confidence in
his ability and this is the only way they can know
he is ready. This is how a boy becomes a man in
our culture. It is far different than in your
culture, but then your culture does not have to
contend with the wilds as we do here."
"That is true. We have no such rituals,
although certain religions have symbolic
ceremonies to signify this event. Certain social
circles do too." Sharon was thinking of the
debutantes and of the Jewish Bar Mitzvah.
"How would you like to go for a walk, Sharon?
Would you like to walk down to the plains and get
a closer look at the animals?"
"I...I don't know. It seems like a long way.
In this heat I don't know if I can do that."
"I'll look after the heat and the effects of
the sun" said Tim.
"Okay then. That sounds okay to me. Is it all
right with you folks if we go for a walk?" Sharon
was showing unusual maturity and manners. It was
not that she was impolite at other times, but it
was not so much her practise to show this kind of
concern. Mostly it was others showing it to her.
Tim had brought Sharon over here because her
head and heart were still reeling from what her
father had done on that television interview.
Being night, back home, Tim knew it would be
morning here, so he brought her here to do some
thinking on her own, get her out of the
environment, so to speak.
They began to walk downhill to the plateau
below. Sharon was right. It was a long way. Even
walking downhill it would take them an hour. The
heat was now getting to be too much so Tim created
an envelope of environment around them. It was
cool and comfortable, without the damaging rays of
the sun hitting Sharon.
Sharon was in emotional turmoil. She really
didn't know what was happening or what was going
on in her head. First there was this embarrassing
presentation of her father. That had struck Sharon
so deep and so cruelly it presented her with an
emotional charge she would long carry around. She
would have to learn to deal with that. Then she,
in her emotional state, had permitted her mind to
get carried away with respect to the meaning of
this trip of Hemno's. Her mind was racing in a
thousand different directions and she knew not
what the outcome would be.
About 45 minutes into their walk, a good
distance from Sonora's home, Sharon stopped. "Tim,
hold me." She wanted some comfort.

TODAY'S REPORT:
Back to another weekend folks. I have household chores to

doing stuff like that. It is just one more thing that will be
complete in our new house. Goodness, new house? It just

A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend
and was jokingly explaining about the red, white and blue
in the Netherlands flag.
"Our flag symbolizes our taxes," he said.
"We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our

"That's the same with us," the American said, "only we see
stars, too."
