Report: Online Travel Revenues To Skyrocket
By Wendy Davis Wednesday, October 20, 2004
The rapidly consolidating online travel industry will double
its revenues in the next three years, from $38 billion last year
to more than $80 billion in 2007, according to a report
released Tuesday by New York research firm eMarketer.
This growth potential, combined with the "ongoing
realignment," could lead to a new push to "establish
market share in online travel," said eMarketer senior
analyst Noah Elkin.
"The online travel sector is becoming increasingly
competitive and suppliers ... are mounting a more
aggressive challenge to the online agencies that
initially dominated the marketplace," the report stated.
The most recent industry shake-up came last month,
when travel and hotel-franchising giant Cendant Corp.
agreed to acquire online travel company Orbitz for
$1.25 billion in cash. Cendant--previously the third
largest player in the industry behind Expedia, a unit of
InterActive Corp., and Travelocity, a unit of
Sabre Holdings Corp.--is now second only to Expedia.
The travel industry accounts for 24 percent of all online
advertising, including permission-based e-mails, search
engine marketing, and online impressions. Of those
advertising methods, search engines "are the most
promising form of advertising that's emerging at this
point," said Elkin, adding that search engine marketing
is cost-effective, and that consumers are likely to see
such ads because they research destinations on
search engines.
Despite the companies' attempts to establish brand
identities, customers seem to view them. "Site loyalty
is still pretty limited," said Elkin, adding that consumers
site-hop when making travel plans.

Accusations and Flaws, All Serious
By JIM RUTENBERG and KATE ZERNIKE
Published: October 20, 2004
WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 - The documentary that Sinclair
Broadcast Group has instructed 40 of its television stations
to feature in a broadcast on Friday night makes some of
the most serious accusations against Senator John Kerry
of the campaign. The accusations include that he
single-handedly prolonged the Vietnam War, worsened
the torture of prisoners of war and ultimately caused
countless, needless deaths with his antiwar activism
30 years ago.
The film is rife with out-of-context and incomplete
quotations from Mr. Kerry and other antiwar veterans.
Several historians said many accusations in it were
not provable or stretched far beyond reality.
Throughout, the film shows wrenching images of torture
as ex-prisoners of war recount the deep sense of betrayal
they felt after hearing about Mr. Kerry's Senate testimony
in 1971 in which he recounted atrocities by American troops.
Mr. Kerry's backers acknowledge many veterans'
frustration over Mr. Kerry's antiwar statements then. The
supporters have not actively challenged assertions from
former prisoners of war who are anti-Kerry that their
Vietcong captors referred to his testimony during torture.
Historians not connected to the Kerry campaign dispute
the central assertion of the film, that Mr. Kerry was
responsible for prolonging the war and the prisoners'
torture. In the film, several veterans estimate that the war
dragged out for an extra two years because of
Mr. Kerry's statements in 1971.
Some historians say that gives Mr. Kerry, and probably
the antiwar movement, too much credit. Although the
North Vietnamese were well aware of antiwar sentiment
in the United States and took heart from it, the movement
was in full steam by the time Mr. Kerry joined.
"The rise of the antiwar movement had been a factor in
North Vietnamese decision making six or seven years
before Kerry joined it," said William J. Duiker, a former
professor of East Asian studies at Pennsylvania State
University who has written extensively about the wartime
strategy of Hanoi, where he was stationed in the
mid-1960's while in the foreign service. The only factor
that changed the way prisoners of war were treated,
Professor Duiker and others said, was the peace treaty
that President Richard M. Nixon signed with the
North Vietnamese in 1973 that paved the way to
release the prisoners.
The film opens with the film's producer,
Carlton A. Sherwood, a former investigative reporter
and a Vietnam veteran, saying although he has
undertaken many journalistic endeavors, the history
of Mr. Kerry's antiwar activism is "a lot more personal."
He recalls listening to Mr. Kerry's testimony in 1971,
saying, "I felt an inner hurt no surgeon's scalpel
could remove."
Other veterans appear, saying Mr. Kerry wrongly
accused them of war crimes. The film says Mr. Kerry
never saw the atrocities he reported. It has a snippet
of his testimony on soldiers' cutting off ears and raping
women. The snippet is edited to a sentence where
Mr. Kerry says he did not witness those scenes, that he
was reporting testimony from the Winter Soldier hearings
that the Vietnam Veterans Against the War used in 1971
to show that war crimes like the My Lai massacre were
not isolated.
Mr. Kerry made clear in his testimony and on
"Meet the Press" that year that he was not blaming the
veterans but rather the leadership that had come up with
"free fire'' zones, encouraged body counts and authorized
areas for airstrikes.
Kenneth Cordier, a former war prisoner and former
volunteer veterans' adviser to President Bush's campaign,
says in the film, "I was outraged, and still am, that he
willingly said things which were untrue."
Several historians said yesterday that Mr. Kerry's testimony
could be legitimately criticized for greatly exaggerating the
frequency of atrocities but that atrocities did occur.
"They didn't happen with the frequency with which
John Kerry talks about them in the truncated comments
we've all heard," said Gary D. Solis, a former marine
who is a law professor at West Point.

Fats: The Good And The Not So Good
PART 1 of 8 (References will be at the
end of PART 8)
If You Are Confused About The Kinds Fats
That You Should Eat...Or Stay Away From,
This Information May Help.
We are discovering a lot about the foods we eat: how
they support our bodies and how they may also harm us.
I think some of the most frequent questions I get in my
nursing clinics is about fats. The terms are so confusing.
Even if you have the best of intentions to live a healthier
lifestyle, it takes determination and a good dictionary to
figure out what you need to do. Adding to the confusion
is the fact that health care personnel including nutritionists
don't always agree amongst themselves. So it leaves
you to do your own research. This article is by
Dr. Laz Bannock, a very respected international
nutritionist. I am using his work here for two reasons.
First, it is easy to understand and he gives the latest
thoughts to learn from. But it also has some research
links I thought would be helpful for you to keep. The
references come from recognized and mainstream
journals. If you wish to read the original articles, go to
your local library and ask them to get them for you.
You may end up paying a small fee, but this is the
process by which you can find any information that is
mentioned in a bibliography or resource list. If you
are in an educational facility, ask the librarian to find
it for you. Seniors in many instances are exempt from
any fees. The numbers throughout the article refer to
these special reports and this reference list is added
the end of this article.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
It hit the street with a crash. Small pieces
were flying everywhere, breaking windows and
hitting anything that got in the way. Much of the
debris was on it's way to Tim and Russel. Tim
immediately set up a shield around them and the
buildings on this side of the street. There was no
more need for broken windows. The rushing debris
hit the shield and bounced away, back into the
oncoming force. That settled the thrust of the
wall. It settled down onto the street and the
danger of flying pieces was over. The dust it
kicked up was so much you couldn't see ten feet.
It was all Tim could do to see the Police Chief.
"Are you all right?"
"Yes, Tim, I'm fine. What did you do, set up
some kind of a protective screen? That stuff was
headed straight for us."
"You got it. That's what I did. It helped."
"Thank you. My what a mess. Look at that dust.
It will take an hour for that to settle. It's a
good thing there was no one around when that came
down. Someone would have been hurt."
"Let's check out the firemen to see if they're
all okay."
"Good idea, come."
The pair of them walked to the other side of
the street. All the firemen were fine. They were
used to this kind of thing. They were ready. The
ladder truck, however, was not so lucky. It had
been struck in two or three places by falling or
bouncing rock or concrete blocks. There were two
smaller dents in the side of the truck, but one
was a big one. A concrete block had somehow
bounced off the street or from other blocks and
headed toward the truck. It struck the truck right
in the passenger side door and nearly went right
through. The block was still there, stuck in the
door.
The firemen were now working at retrieving the
fireman who had been up the ladder. They had long
ago learned this was the kind of dust that could
be kicked up when walls fell, so they had the man
on the ladder decked out with an oxygen mask. They
all knew when the wall fell they would not be able
to get this man out of the way. He was not in
jeopardy of being hit by rock or concrete block,
even from bouncing. He was too high and above the
wall to begin with. However, he would be and was
completely immersed in the dust that rose like a
mushroom cloud. When they finally had him back at
the ladder truck and standing with two feet
planted firmly on the street, he looked like a
ghost. He was covered from head to toe with that
fine, pulverized dust from all the smashed
concrete.
Suddenly Tim turned quiet. He heard something,
a voice. Shh - there it was again. It was a weak
and distant "Help! Help me."
Tim looked in the direction of the call and
was on the run. He knew someone was in trouble.
He headed across the street and down the
sidewalk. The voice was getting louder. There was
a man sitting on the sidewalk with his back
against a building. He had a television camera on
his lap.
Tim stopped. The man had a nasty cut to his
head, but otherwise no other wounds were visible.
He was however, in shock. Tim called one of the
helpers from the first aid station just around the
corner. They came and looked after the man.
"My boss, Ted Kuzik is over there. He's hurt."
The man pointed to a pile of rubble in the street.
Tim went over to the rubble. He began to move
blocks and stone. There was Ted Kuzik. He could
hardly breathe. That's why his voice was so faint.
The weight of debris on his chest was slowly
suffocating him, just like being "stoned" in the
old days in the middle east.
Tim moved the debris from Kuzik's chest. He
was now breathing better, in fact gasping for air.
Slowly the rest of his body appeared as Tim moved
the rest of the blocks. Kuzik was hurt on both
legs. He was still holding the microphone. Tim
removed it from him and threw it in the direction
of the man on the sidewalk. The microphone didn't
make it that far. It got caught up in rubble that
held the cord.
"Well, Mr. Kuzik. You have yourself in quite a
fix!"
"I...I just wanted to get a shot of that wall.
I had no idea it would come rushing out this far."
"Are you aware you also endangered the life of
your cameraman, or do you care?"
"Dick? Where is he? Is he all right?"
"He's fine, no thanks to you."
"I didn't mean to put him in harms way. I just
didn't think the wall would come this far."
Tim stood at Kuzik's feet. Facing the palms of
his hands toward Kuzik's body lying prone Tim
commanded "Rise up and walk."

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
"Problems are only opportunities in work clothes."
---- Henry J. Kaiser
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
HA! HA! HA!
Because I'm a man, when I lock my keys in the car I
will fiddle with a wire long after hypothermia has set in.
Because I'm a man, when the car isn't running very well,
I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know
what I'm looking at. If another man shows up, one of us
will say to the other, "I used to be able to fix these things,
but now with all these computers and everything, I
wouldn't, know where to start."
Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold, I need
someone to bring me soup and take care of me while
I lie in bed and moan. You're a woman. You never
get as sick as I do, so for you this isn't a problem.
Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase
basic groceries at the store, like milk or bread. I cannot
be expected to find exotic items like "cumin" or "tofu." For
all I know, these are the same thing. And never, under
any circumstances, expect me to pick up anything for
which "feminine hygiene product" is a euphemism.
Because I'm a man, when one of our appliances stops
working, I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence
that this will just cost me twice as, much once the repair
person gets here and has to put it back together.
Because I'm a man, I must hold the television remote
control in my hand while I watch TV. If the thing has
been misplaced, I may miss a whole show looking for
it (though one time I was able to survive by holding a
calculator).
Because I'm a man, I don't think we're all that lost, and
no, I don't think we should stop and ask someone. Why
would you listen to a complete stranger? I mean, how
on earth could he know where we're going?
Because I'm a man, whatever you get your mother for
Mother's Day is okay; I don't need to see it. And don't
forget to pick up something for my mother, too.
Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked
the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end
of it, I didn't.
Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine.
I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was
fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or
without it---looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine.
Can we just go now?
