TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What exactly is the solstice?

Is it true that the winter solstice is also the longest night
of the year?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why does Hanukkah have so many different spellings?

"Hanukkah," which means rededication, has only five
letters in the original Hebrew, so translating it to English
has produced numerous spellings, including Channuka,
Channukah, Chanuka, Chanukah, Chanuko, Hannuka,
Hannukah, Hanuka, Hanukah, Hanukkah, Kanukkah,
Khannuka, Khannukah, Khanuka, Khanukah, Khanukkah,
and Xanuka. The problem is that the opening consonant
is a Hebrew guttural sound that has no precise
equivalent in English.

When is the winter solstice?

Dec. 22, 2003, marks the solstice - the beginning of
winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the
Southern Hemisphere. The precise moment of the 2003
solstice was December 22 at 2:04 am Eastern Standard
Time.

The Importance Of Uninterrupted Time
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD

Have you ever been right in the middle of writing the perfect
sentence when a co-worker or spouse appeared at the door with
a need? Ever been working on a proposal and just as it really
begins to come together your phone rings? Not only are these
events annoying, irritating and downright infuriating, they
are extremely inefficient uses of your time.

Research has shown that, when in the middle of a creative
project, it takes up to twenty minutes to return to the same
high-level of productivity following an interruption. That
one fact alone could transform workplaces, couldn't it?

How do you create uninterrupted time? First, the work culture
has to address the issue. Where there are cubicles,
interruption can be constant. Your own level of
concentration, then, becomes critical. Can you block out
unwanted stimuli easily? Can you see people coming up to you
from your work station? One of the truly disruptive things
both physically and emotionally is the jolt you get when a
person speaks to or touches you unexpectedly. It's a good
idea to create a rear-view mirror for yourself if you cannot
see folks approaching your cubicle. When you have to overcome
both the mental interruption and the shock to the body, that's
even more disturbing!

If you have an office door, you're lucky. Consult your
schedule and block out times when that door will be shut. You
may have to educate other staff members to the meaning of your
closed door. At one business, I saw a sign on a closed door
that read, "If you are thinking of knocking or opening this
door, you really don't understand why it is closed!!! Think
again." That may or may not work for you, however, it did
make the intruder stop and think.

Does that telephone really need to be answered every single
time it rings? Probably not. Does email have to be answered
within thirty seconds of its arrival? Probably not. If not,
what would it take for you to unhook yourself from the demands
of those two instant communication systems. Develop the
habits you need to be the most effective and efficient.

Constant interruption kills any hope of effective time
management. One solution is to create regular meetings with
the folks with whom you interact most at work. Use that time
to address non-pressing issues and to foresee upcoming needs.
Be pro-active. Head crises off at the path. This will cut
down on your interruptions.

So, what if you are the lowest person on your work totem pole?
That's tough from the perspective of minimizing interruptions.
You may, in fact, be seen as the most available person in the
office. You can still assess your workload and make
suggestions as to when is the best time to bring you tasks or
ask for information. If you are very wise, you will make
those suggestions sound like clear benefit statements to the
staff, e.g., "In order for me to give you the very best
service, I would like to have all your requests before 2 PM.
That way, it is likely I can respond to them today."

At home, the same thing applies. Everyone needs quiet,
uninterrupted time. Recently I was working with a coaching
client who has a demanding job, a new baby and a husband who
travels extensively for his work. Carving out at least one
half-hour of uninterrupted time for herself is taking some
persistence. Everything seems to be more demanding than her
promises to herself. She's changing that quickly. Some folks
seem to take much longer. How about you? Are you at the top
of your totem pole for some time every day?

Give yourself the gift of uninterrupted time. The returns are
amazing.

Fats: The Good And The Not So Good
PART 6 of 8 (References will be at the
end of PART 8)

If You Are Confused About The Kinds Fats
That You Should Eat...Or Stay Away From,
This Information May Help.

Flaxseed oil has the highest known concentration of
alpha-linolenic acid, the principal plant-source omega-3 PUFA.
Those wishing to adjust their diets to include more PUFAs
should substitute them for other fats, rather than merely
adding more fat to the diet. Sources of fats that promote
heart disease (i.e., saturated fats, trans-fatty acids) should
be reduced. These include butter, whole milk products,
red meat, pork, margarine, and some fast foods. Some of
Dr. Bannock's terms to explain what they are and how
they would apply to your life... What does "risk reductions"
mean? It simply means that if you make some lifestyle
changes, you decrease the chances of having a health
problem. In this case, it could be as easy as changing the
type and amount of fat you choose to eat. Why should you
want to tackle the "fat" issue? It is a practical and very
doable way to reduce your chance of cardiac problems.
Cardiac symptoms are very uncomfortable and chronic.
They curtail your lifestyle very dramatically. As the condition
deteriorates or degenerates, there is little joy or energy
left with which to live. The conditions listed below are
happening inside your body, but your heart "fuels" what
happens on the outside: how much you can do. Coronary
heart disease is about losing the fight to maintain the
heart muscles in tone and quality of tissue, thus causing
activities to slow down and become less efficient.

"could improve/ enhance circulation and prevent the
formation of atherosclerotic plaques,"

Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fatty (!) deposits on the
inside of your blood vessels and causes them to reduce
the size of the passageway.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

Supper lingered on. The chatter around the
table went from downtown to down to South America
and back. Tim explained his trip, last night, with
Sharon, over to see Sonora and her family.
Everyone immediately inquired about them.

Tim explained about Hemno's trip and that
yesterday was the day it began. He related the
story of the cat attack on Sharon, about her
difficulty in learning higher law, and about how
he saw in her what he sees in much of North
America, the need for instant gratification.

Tim was one who had been trained from his
early years, by his Father, as to the values and
benefits of staying calm and to look deep into
things. His Dad had taught him to look inside for
answers, that more often he would find the right
ones there rather than from some outside source.
He was taught that to be "his own man" he must be
entirely self reliant and not to become
'entangled' with others. Yes it was fine to have
friends, but those friends had no claim on his
person, emotionally or otherwise. The more he
respected that and the more he required that
respect from others the more free he was to make
his own decisions about what he did. So he was
able to see man's tendencies much earlier than
most, because he took the time to study on it.

And then they were back to speaking of the
disaster again, the kids, querying about Susan
Miles and Mae Wiley, and generally having a look
at all the community of those who lived by higher
law, at least that much they knew about.

The doorbell rang. Alewka and little AliAnn
went to answer it. The pair of them were going
everywhere together.

At the door was Ben and Helen Striker. They
were invited in and came into the kitchen. "Hello
you guys. Gee it's good to see you." They were
speaking to Eloise and Mazunta. Both Ben and Helen
went over to give them a hug.

Then the doorbell rang again. This time it was
Jim and Hilda White, and before Alewka could get
the door closed she saw Darryl Sparks walking up
the sidewalk along with a woman Alewka could only
surmise was his wife. She appeared timid and
embarrassed. Alewka knew what was going on in her
head.

"Hello Darryl. How are you?" Alewka held out
her hand in greeting.

"Hello Alewka. Thank you for inviting us here
tonight. This is my wife Evelyn."

"Hello Evelyn. Welcome. I'll bet you're a
little bit timid about meeting those 'strange
Henrys' aren't you?"

"Oh, Mrs. Henry. You shouldn't say that."

"No, Evelyn, but I was watching you approach
and I knew you are having some reluctance within
you. All you really know about us is what you have
read in your husbands newspaper and what you have
heard at church. You're just not too sure this
visit is a good idea. It's okay for Darryl when
he's here on business, but socially? Don't worry.
You'll find folks here to be filled with love and
compassion. They have no agenda and you will be
under no spell. I promise." Alewka gave Evelyn a
wink.

Soon the house was crowded and folks were
sitting down and talking in the kitchen, in the
dining room and in the living room. There was much
communication going on and some of the
conversations were quite animated.

Billy had turned on the television to catch
the news. he happened to turn it to WHRC in
Philadelphia. There was a screen showing a
"Special Report" was coming up. Billy hollered.
"Hey! Look! There's a special report. Hey! Look
everybody. A special report."

The people began to come into the living room
to see what the fuss was about. Just as they got
there on came Ted Kuzik.

Ted was not the same reporter using the same
kind of stacatto approach he used to. Tonight he
was most subdued. It was almost hard to believe it
was Ted. "Folks, I have a serious story to tell
you tonight. As you know I have ruthlessly chased
down the story of the Henry family in Pinehill.
They are a family who seem able to perform
miracles. Well this reporter doesn't believe in
miracles. I kept looking for all the holes in
their work. I was sure they were doing things that
were just fooling the public. I know that in all
that time I was chasing a story they would give me
considerable trouble. I don't think we liked each
other very much. Then came the disaster the other
day in Pinehill and I recorded on film some of the
miraculous things these people were doing. They
were saving lives in ways firemen and police were
unable. They dared to go into burning buildings,
risking their lives, just to save others, and they
did this time and time again. You all saw it on
out news coverage. Still I thought it was phony.

HA! HA! HA!

A State Trooper pulls a car over on a lonely back road and
approaches the blonde lady driver. "Ma'am, is there a reason
that you're weaving all over the road?"

The woman replied, "Oh officer, thank goodness you're here! I
almost had an accident. I looked up and there was a tree right
in front of me. I swerved to the left and there was another tree
in front of me. I swerved to the right and there was another
tree in front of me!"

Reaching through the side window to the rear view mirror, the
officer replied, "Ma'am... that's your air freshener."
