TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Is there any group of Christians that does not celebrate
Christmas?
Who is "Bells Nichols"?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why do we abbreviate Christmas as "Xmas"?
Because the Greek letter "x" is the first letter of the Greek
word for Christ, "Xristos." The word "Xmas," therefore,
means "Christ's Mass." Despite what you might read
elsewhere, "Xmas" was NOT an attempt to take the
"Christ" out of "Christmas." It's been commonly used in
Europe since at least the sixteenth century.
How long is a fruitcake edible?
Quite a long time (that is, if you consider it edible to begin
with). According to "The Joy of Cooking" by Irma Rombauer,
Marion Rombauer Becker, and Ethan Becker, fruitcakes
"well-wrapped and stored in airtight tins, are reputed to
remain enjoyable for as long as 25 years; we have not
sampled one." The cakes are saturated with alcoholic
liquors to keep down mold (and, of course, to taste better).

Skill With The Language
If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't
it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted,
cowboys deranged, models deposed (and eventually
disfigured) and dry cleaners depressed?
Laundry workers could decrease, eventually becoming
depressed and depleted! Even more, bedmakers will be
debunked, baseball players will be debased, landscapers
will be deflowered, bulldozer operators will be degraded,
organ donors will be delivered, the BVD company will be
debriefed, and even musical composers will eventually
decompose. As a student, I spent all my time wishing to be
detested and degraded.
On a more positive note though, perhaps we can hope
politicians will be devoted.
I love the way some folks use the English language. And
if I were fluent in other languages I am sure I would find
something to love there too.
When I look back at the writings of those who founded the
United States I am in awe. Benjamin Franklin, for one, had
a genius with words, although he likely never thought so.
Go back further and study, for example, the King James
Version of the Bible, not for the message it offers, but for
the writing, the way it says things.
I always keep a dictionary around that has root words in it.
I like to know where words come from, what time period
were they formed, and what did they mean then. That way
I can get a good grasp on the real meaning. For example,
there was a time in medicine where they thought that
bleeding was a way of getting the "bad" out of a person.
You can imagine the words used in that period, and some
of them we still use today.
I have found that when one knows the root of a word it can
sometimes change the meaning dramatically. Also, words
are often used by those who know not what they mean, but
heard them from others. One of my favorites is the way we
use the word "occult". If you listen to those who are religious
speak about the word occult and what it means you will
come away thinking it represents the single most worst
thing possible. In reality it merely means "mystical, magic,
esoteric", nothing to be frightened of at all.
So, if you get a chance, keep a dictionary handy. Learn to
use it so you can make your words count. You will find
your progress in any endeavor to be much aided by your
knowledge of the language. Learn to have ...

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Do You Have Trouble Staying Awake After A Meal?
This Might Be The Reason...
(Healthy Habits Aren't Convenient . . . They're A Choice.)
PART 2 of 6
The composition of your meal may be such that you are
getting too many carbohydrates and not enough balance of
protein and fat. We are basically speaking of "the food
combining principle". Generally, when people eat combination
meals of starch with a heavy protein, a lot of the energy of
the body goes to the digestive process. The alkaline and acid
digestive juices are also trying to work together...in harmony.
So a large meal requires more blood flow to be diverted to
the stomach for digestion for a longer period of time, leaving
less energy for the rest of the body to function adequately.
(It's like the post office getting swamped with mail at Christmas
time...vs. email being pretty steady all year long.) So to avoid
that, you might have protein meals (like meat, fish, fowl, eggs,
or soy) with a lightly steamed vegetable and a salad. Try to
include a 3-oz portion of lean meat/fish/chicken or meat
substitute such as tofu/tempeh/beans, plus fruits and a salad.
Then have starch (carbohydrates) meal separately and
have it with more lightly steamed vegetables and another
salad. But have this at the next meal...i.e. dinner, plus...again
fruits. (Now I want to share something that I found confusing
till someone helped me to understand. Potatoes and rice are
water-based carbohydrates, just like fruits and vegetables.
The difference is in their processing. When you cook rice or
potatoes, you TURN them into a starchy carbohydrate. They
stop being a water based (highly desirable) carbohydrate
and turn into a starch carbohydrate (less desirable). Once the
water content is removed, their function changes. Hope this
helps a bit. That's why we can have "carbohydrates" along
with the protein
it's just in a different food item.)

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

As they moved around the village the visitors
were met with enthusiasm and love. The villagers
felt so secure they extended themselves far more
than both Darryl and Evelyn had ever experienced.
It was refreshing and captivating.
When they came to Boolanga's house they
stopped and chatted for a while. They were told of
how Eloise and David had come to meet Boolanga and
how this man had learned higher law. They also
found out this is where Midnight spent her time
when she wasn't occupied with hunting or with
playing with the village kids.
They moved on and came to Mae Wiley's hut
which was next to David and Pam's. No one was
home, of course, so they continued to meet David
and Pamela.
"Hi again David. This is a nice little
village. I don't think I have ever met people who
are so friendly. It is amazing. They're
wonderful."
"Hi Mrs Sparks. That's true. They are a
wonderful people. Even when you live here all the
time they are wonderful. It was there to start
with but when they came to the realization that
those in the village who live by higher law will
protect them from everything and that they are
entirely safe, they opened up completely. They are
fine folk. I'd like you to meet my wife, Pamela,
and this is our little girl, Mae Eloise."
"Hello Mrs. Sparks. Hello Mr. Sparks. It is
good to see you. We don't often get newcomers
visit us from Pinehill. It's nice you're here."
"What do you mean newcomers, Pam?" asked
Darryl.
"We're quite used to seeing Mr. and Mrs.
Henry, Mr. and Mrs. Striker and Mr. and Mrs.
White. You are the first newcomers we have seen
for a long time, welcome."
"Thank you Pam. You have a nice little family
here. It looks like you enjoy living here."
"Oh! Evelyn, it's wonderful. Truly I enjoy
every day, and the kids love it."
"But you are so far from home. Don't you miss
that?"
"Well Evelyn, I did at first, because I
thought I was here forever with no hope of being
able to go back. But when we can go home in an
instant that psychological wall no longer exists.
I can come and go as I please and it pleases me to
stay here. It is away from many of the values with
which I had to contend that I didn't like. I
prefer the quiet, simple, loving life we have
here. The kids will be raised knowing higher law
and will be able to adapt to any life they want
but here, in their youth, they are well loved by
everyone in the village. The kids don't fight. The
older ones look after the younger ones and
everyone looks out for all the kids. Nowhere can
they enjoy life as they do here."
"I can see that. I can hear them playing
someplace. I haven't seen too many kids around,
now that I think on it. I'm glad you like it. I
don't know about higher law. I was frightened when
we first arrived. I thought maybe Eloise had done
something to me I wasn't sure about. But now I
know what is going on I find myself enjoying the
visit. I hope I can come back someday and spend
some time with you."
"That would be nice. The noise you hear from
the kids is their never ending game of ball they
play down on the beach. You're going in that
direction. You'll see them."
With that the group continued down to the
beach and the river.
They had to work their way through the mess of
kids who were at their ball game. They loved
to play it, even the older ones.
As the group approached the river they became
impressed with the canoes on the beach. The two
David and his men had carved were particularly
elegant and stately. There was much discussion
around them.
"I see David, why Ben suggested you carve our
statue for our town square. This is beautiful
work. I sure hope the city gets its act together
and gets down here to order that done. When they
see these they will be impressed. I'll tell them
about them. Next time I come I will bring a
camera."
"Whenever the city wants it is fine Darryl.
I'm not going anywhere. If they chose to send down
a delegation, let us know and we'll 'arrange'
their trip. Ben and Sam can bring them."
The group laughed. "That would be a surprise
to them, thats for sure."
"Well you two, this is where I live. There is
no more to show you and it sure doesn't take much
time to see all the village. Maybe we should get
back home to be with the others."

I was scheduled to fly from North Carolina to Germany,
where my husband was stationed in the military. As I
checked in at the airport, the ticket agent asked me some

any packages that you didn't pack yourself?" he asked.
I told him that my mother-in-law had given me a parcel
to take to her son.
He looked at me very carefully and asked: "Does
she like you?"
