TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Who was Mrs. Martin van Butchell and why is her case famous
in the annals of embalming?

Who was "Wrong Way Corrigan"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Who invented embalming?

The ancient Egyptians, of course, are famous for their
embalming techniques. But modern embalming, in which a
preservative is injected into the corpse's arteries, was
developed in the 1600s by the same guy who discovered the
circulatory system - Englishman William Harvey. The practice
didn't become popular for another century, though.

Is it true that the ancient Egyptians embalmed their cats?

Yes, and not just cats either. Numerous animals were
embalmed by the Egyptians, including birds and monkeys. But
cats, well-loved and revered, were mourned by the entire
family when they died and were often mummified in elaborate
fashion, by both rich and poor alike.

Tips And Tidbits

Esquire wikis article on Wikipedia by Daniel Terdiman

When Esquire magazine writer A.J. Jacobs decided to do an
article about the freely distributable and freely editable
online encyclopedia Wikipedia, he took an innovative
approach: He posted a crummy, error-laden draft of the story
to the site.

Wikipedia lets anyone create a new article for the
encyclopedia or edit an existing entry. As a result, since
it was started in 2001, Wikipedia has grown to include
nearly 749,000 articles in English alone--countless numbers
of which have been edited by multiple members of the
community. (There are versions of Wikipedia in 109 other
languages as well.)

The idea is that, despite the fact that anyone can work on
any article, Wikipedia's content is self-cleaning because
its community keeps a close eye on the accuracy of articles
and, in most cases, acts quickly to fix errors that find
their way into individual entries.

It's the same argument programmers make about open-source
software: Since everyone can see the source code, the
community can collectively rid the software of errors better
than a few developers at one company ever could.

With that dynamic in mind, Jacobs decided to craft an
article about Wikipedia, complete with a series of
intentional mistakes and typos, and post it on the site. The
hope was that the community itself would be able to fix the
errors and create a clean version that would be ready for
publication in Esquire's December issue. The original
version was preserved for posterity.

"The idea I had--which Jimmy (Wales, Wikipedia's founder)
loved--is that I'd write a rough draft of the article and
then Jimmy would put it on a site for the Wikipedia
community to rewrite and edit," Jacobs wrote on the page
introducing the experiment. Esquire "would print the
'before' and 'after' versions of the articles. So here's
your chance to make this article a real one. All
improvements welcome."

Neither Jacobs nor Esquire would comment for this story.

"For those haven't looked at Diderot's Encyclopedie
recently, you should know that it is hopelessly incomplete,"
Jacobs' original draft began, typos and all. "For instance,
it lacks entry on Exploding Whales. There's nothing on Troll
Metal (rock music about goblins that eat Christians),
autofellatio (a form of masturbation that be traced to the
Egyptian creation myth) or Dr. Bombay (the physician warlock
on Bewitched).

"No, you can only find those entries in one encyclopedia:
The Wikipedia, the Encyclopedia that was launched in 2001
and has become biggest, most wide-ranging, most untamed
reference work in history."

According to the Wikipedia page for Jacobs' story, the
article was edited 224 times in the first 24 hours after
Jacobs posted it, and another 149 times in the next 24
hours.

The final draft, which was locked on Sept. 23 to protect it
from further edits, reflects the efforts of the many users
who worked on it.

"What is the legal status of dwarf tossing?" the locked
version begins. "Did people really worship Jesus Christ's
foreskin as a relic? Where was crushing by elephant used as
an execution method? And who is the mysterious galactic
ruler Xenu at the heart of Scientology?

"You won't find the answers in Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Only one place contains them all: Wikipedia. The free online
encyclopedia has become the largest, most wide-ranging and
most untamed reference work in history."

Along the way, the Wikipedia community worked under a few
guidelines from Jacobs: "Use a punchy writing style--we're
writing an article for Esquire; don't write like an
encyclopedia--this is a feature magazine article; keep the
word count close to the original--wiki isn't paper, but this
article will be printed on paper."

And the users responded. According to the site, the original
article was 709 words with 14 paragraphs, while the final
edit was indeed punchier and included 771 words and 15
paragraphs.

Andy Baio, who wrote about the Esquire experiment on his
blog, Waxy.org: Links, suggested the project provides a
particularly apt example of how Wikipedians handle articles.

"I think it's great," Baio said. "Look at the activity.
Every factual error was corrected within minutes, and the
focus moved on to refinement, clarification and making the
article more readable."

To Wales, the experiment was a good example of how a
magazine might be able to use its readers to make for more
complete journalism.

"It would be interesting to see things that might work well
(with) factual articles about whatever," Wales said. "If
somebody like Time does an article about an election season
and lets people work on it, that might be fun."

But he also said that media organizations need to be careful
about who they let interact with their work.

Wales pointed to a recent experiment in which The Los
Angeles Times tried a "wikitorial" in which its readers
could collaboratively work on editorials.

"It was more or less a complete disaster," Wales said,
"because they didn't have a community built up, so they just
had tons and tons of random people (involved). They had to
take it down because there was too much vandalism."

Kelly Martin, a Wikipedia user who helped edit Jacobs'
piece, said the experiment worked significantly better than
an earlier trial in which a television station tried to get
Wikipedians to co-edit an article.

Some Thoughts On Chelation Therapy
Learning About Possible
Metal Toxicity In Your Body
PART 11 of 11

Mercury amalgam is a metal which many of us innocently carry
about in out bodies. We have been led to believe it is
harmless, yet we know it is not. For more on this and any
dental issue or questions, I strongly suggest you contact
Tom McGuire; DDS. He is one of the world’s leading
authorities on dental wellness and the founder of The Dental
Wellness Institute. He will provide a “second opinion” from
a sound knowledge base.
http://www.dentalwellness4u.com/browse/mouth.html Phone:
1-800-335-7755 (Pacific time) Web Site:
www.dentalwellness4u.com
http://www.dentalwellness4u.com/browse/mouth.html Quote: Are
Mercury Amalgam (Silver) Fillings Toxic? There is no safe
level for mercury and even one atom of it will do some harm
to the body. A Mouthful of Poison by Dr. Myron Wentz: The
Truth about Mercury Amalgam Fillings. Both sites have a
tremendous amount of information on dental health, and
things you can do now to prevent further problems. After
all, our mouths feed our bodies: having the “door” of your
body healthy would make a lot of sense.

I found a most interesting site that is looking for people
to participate in clinical trials. So if you wish to do
something like that, check out this site.
http://clinicaltrials.gov/search/term=complementary+and+
alternative+medicine&recruiting=true I do want to give you a
“heads up” on this kind of participation. Do cheek out the
indirect sponsor for the trial. It might be sponsored by a
pharmaceutical company but the sponsorship is done very
discreetly. If a drug is involved, it may or may alter the
study’s outcome. Just be aware if you sign up. Studies like
this are what is classified as scientific objective
research. And as you read through all my searching, you
noticed a profound lack of this kind of research. However,
from my own experience, not all studies deemed to be
scientific, end up positively “pure”. Wish that they were!

I found little information on testing for residual levels or
any helpful ideas of what one could expect during treatment.
I would assume that once the metals were out of your body,
life would be back to being normal, but no where did I read
that. I found little long-term projections of disease
recovery. Because most of the information came from health
care professionals who did not support this treatment, I
found few positive results from the treatment. I have to
think they must exist. Otherwise, why would this be a
possible treatment at all?

So what did I achieve from all this research? I learned an
incredible amount about the process, and why or when it
might be used. I learned that there are still many
unanswered questions. I also found that the medical
community is still not looking to solutions in other
“non-traditional” arenas. I found many Internet sites have a
lot of dated material. My suggestion to you is to continue
to do your own research until you find sites that make you
feel comfortable and give you more confidence. I hope this
research has been as helpful to you as it has been to me.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Sammy and AliAnn were mesmerized by Romano's
story. They sat on the ground and didn't take
their eyes off him. They were drawing the
information from him as if they were sponges.
Romano couldn't ever remember having such a keen
audience. "Go on! Go on!"

"I asked him how he knew my name and he said
he would explain later, that I should sit so we
could talk.

I didn't want to sit anywhere close so he
could reach me. I didn't know what he was up to. I
accused him of being just another missionary
trying to make points with his church. He denied
that and said he was no missionary. This guy was a
big guy, good looking, yet he was calm. I kept
sensing that love from him. I didn't trust him.

I walked out in front of him so he could see
me but I wouldn't sit by him. We talked. I asked
him what he wanted. He asked me if I wanted to
know how it was his friend was able to live in
spite of the stabbing I gave him.

I said yes. He explained it had something to
do with what he said was higher law. Somehow he
was able to heal the man and when they both walked
out that door I couldn't believe my eyes. The man
I stabbed was named Miguele.

This big man went on to show me about the law
'As ye sow, so shall ye reap.' He began to show me
how my actions and my thoughts always came back to
me, so, if I wasn't enjoying life much now, look
at the things I was doing.

I told him he was crazy, but he kept on
showing me examples. The more he talked the more
sense he made. He made it clear he didn't want to
'convert' me. He said he had nothing to do with
any organized religion. He didn't believe in them
either.

He said he was, however, interested in showing
me some of the laws by which the universe was run.
I was interested. He made no moves to reach me. He
just wanted to talk. He said he had to go but he
would be back in this same spot the next day if I
was interested.

I came back the next day and there he was.
This time I sat beside him. He made no move to
catch me. He just wanted to talk some more.

The more I spoke with this man the more sense
he made and the more I was interested. He seemed
to me to want nothing from me. We just talked."

"What was his name, do you know?"

"Oh yes, I know. His name was Mazunta. It was
your Dad."

"Wow! He never told us that story."

"Oh there's more, too. Even your Mother got
involved."

"She did?"

"You bet. I owe a lot to your Mom and Dad. I
soon began to want to practice some of the things
your Dad, this big guy was talking about. The more
I got involved with the things he spoke of, the
more I didn't like what I was doing. The gang no
longer appealed to me.

I finally got to a point where I told the gang
I was leaving. They didn't like that. They all
jumped me, stripped me down and tied me to a
pillar in our gang house. They then took a knife
to me and cut me up pretty bad. I was losing a
lot of blood. They stabbed me several times. I
knew I was dead, for sure. They left me there to
bleed for a while, then they took me down and
carried me to the garbage dump.

I was barely conscious. All I could remember
was the big guy. He told me how to reach him if I
needed him. All I was supposed to do was think of
him and then call. That is what I did and then
passed out.

There I was stripped naked, stabbed, cut up,
bleeding and thrown on top of the garbage dump.

The next thing I knew your Mother was standing
over me and telling me to 'Rise up and walk'. I
remember thinking, 'How in hell am I going to do
that?' But the words were not just words, they
were a command that resounded deep within me.
Somehow they motivated me and I tried to get up.

Slowly I was able to make it. There I was
naked as a plucked chicken and standing before
your Mom. She waved her hand and in that instant I
was fully clothed in nice new clothes and I felt
fine. Wherever I looked at or felt my body there
were no wounds. In truth I felt like a million
pesos.

Next we had to figure where I was going to
stay and you know where they took me?"

"No, where?"

"They took me to Miguele's place, the man I
had stabbed and left for dead. I couldn't believe
it. I wanted to run but your Mom and Dad were
there and explained what had happened. Miguele and
his wife took me in as if I were their son. Again,
I was uncertain. How can people be like that. I
nearly killed that man and yet on the say of your
Mom and Dad they took me in.

HA! HA! HA!

An infantry brigade was training in the summer heat,
learning methods to counter offensive tactics. That summer,
the area had experienced an infestation of rattlesnakes.
Officers and NCOs were given one magazine of live ammunition
to counter this danger, as several men had already been
bitten.

So much ammunition was expended shooting, supposedly, at
snakes that the post commander demanded that every officer
and NCO who had shot at a snake present the dead snake as
proof that the expenditure of rounds was justifiable.

The next day, the post commander entered his office and
spotted a shoe box on his desk. He opened it, revealing a
sleepy and sluggish, but very live, rattlesnake. Inside the
box were twenty expended cartridges, and a short note. The
note said, "I missed!"
