Who was Mrs. Martin van Butchell and why is her case famous
in the annals of embalming?
Mrs. Martin van Butchell was one
of the earliest corpses to benefit from modern embalming
techniques. Her husband had her embalmed in 1775 in order to
get around an unfortunate clause in her will. Mrs. van
Butchell, for reasons we can only speculate about, specified
in her will that her husband was to have charge of her
fortune ONLY for the time her body remained above ground.
Mausoleums weren't really known at that time, so Mrs. van
Butchell probably expected her husband's good time to be
very brief indeed. But Martin van Butchell paid a Scottish
anatomist to embalm his wife. He then put her on display in
a glass coffin and actually had regular visiting hours for
those who wanted to see her.
Who was "Wrong Way Corrigan"?
Being famous can be nice, but not when you're famous
for an error you made! "Wrong Way Corrigan" got his
name from going the wrong way. It was such
a colossal mistake that most people didn't want to believe
he erred. They assumed he was just flouting authority.
Douglas Corrigan was an airplane mechanic whose hero was
Charles Lindbergh. Like many people of his era, he wanted to
emulate Lindbergh's crossing of the Atlantic. But
authorities rejected his flight plan and told him he
couldn't do it. Amelia Earhart had disappeared just a year
earlier and aviation authorities didn't want other pilots
taking on dangerous solo flights. So Corrigan decided to fly
solo nonstop from New York to California instead. His new
plan was approved. But when he took off, he flew east
instead of west. His main compass wasn't working and when he
looked at his backup compass he followed the wrong end of
the needle. Because it was foggy, he flew for 26 hours
before he realized his mistake. By that time, he was in
Ireland. Authorities were so convinced that he'd made the
trip to Ireland on purpose that he had to pass several lie
detectors to convince them otherwise. Defenders of Corrigan
noted that he had not taken food or water or clothing or
maps for a transatlantic flight and that he'd left with a
leaky gas tank. Finally, authorities accepted his story and
Corrigan became "Wrong Way Corrigan." By mistake, he'd
emulated Lindbergh's flight, but achieved success without
Lindbergh's careful planning.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Topsy Turvey!
One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve calls out to God, "Lord,
I have a problem!"
"What's the problem, Eve?"
"Lord, I know you've created me and have provided this
beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals, and
that hilarious comedic snake, but I'm just not happy."
"Why is that, Eve?" came the reply from above.
"Lord, I am lonely. And I'm sick to death of apples."
"Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create
a man for you."
"What's a 'man,' Lord?"
"This man will be a flawed creature, with many bad traits.
He'll lie, cheat, and be vainglorious; all in all, he'll
give you a hard time. But, he'll be bigger, faster, and will
like to hunt and kill things. He will provide you with
companionship and satisfy your desires. Yet, he'll be
witless and will revel in childish things like fighting and
kicking a ball about. He won't be too smart, so he'll also
need your advice to think properly."
"Sounds great," says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow.
"What's the catch, Lord?"
"As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant, and self-admiring. So
you'll have to let him believe that I made him first. So,
just remember: it's our secret. Woman to Woman."
How is that for a slap in the traditional face? There is
enough to do without concerning ourselves with the question
- "Is there any truth to the joke above?"
We get so embedded into our habit structure that this is a
good time to begin to think that maybe some of our thoughts
are wrong. Maybe some are only acceptable because the
society in which we live accepts it. Maybe God, or Allah, or
whatever you call your Maker is much different than what we
have thought. Maybe we should study a little on that.
Maybe we should break pattern a little. Invite a guest who
has no immediate family in town, to dinner. Make peace with
an adversary.
Here, too, one can go inside and re-think the causes of ones
condition. As a youth, in my first job, I was blown away
when I found the paper I was working for actually sold or
loaned raw paper to its competitor, when, through
mismanagement they had run out of paper on which to print
their news. The paper I worked for felt they were much
better off with this competitor in place than with no
competitor. They were right.
You, too, can look at the advantages you have gained from
your adversary, and there are lots. Why don't you go say
thanks to that person.
The object, here, is to have a time of growth, a time of
learning, a time of expanding ones view of the world.
An event that can give you love, caring and wisdom is quite
an event. Maybe it is time to turn your world ...

Some Thoughts About Soy
PART 1 of 5
I wanted to share some thoughts with you about soy. I
received two bulletins lately. And the comments reflect my
perceptions. And as usual please dont use them to make
serious medical decisions.
I have never been a great supporter of soy. For some reason
all the hype makes me nervous and suspicious. Because I work
with people suffering with symptoms related to Menieres
disease, I am always on the lookout for salt content. And
with soy, its all over the map! So when I received these
two more bulletins on soy, I decided to find my information
written by Dr. Mercolas a few months ago. This is the link
to the entire article.
http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/26/soy_myths.htm
Dr. Mercolas refers to a book by Dr. Kaayla Daniel's The
Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health
Food. Just please read all three pieces of information.
Then start thinking seriously about your understanding of
soy. If you have children on this product, please be aware
of what you are giving them. There could be a downside to
this food. My idea is to alert you if you have symptoms as
mentioned in the book or the article, then at least explore
this more. Maybe a little soy is not a problem, but how much
are you eating

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

I decided to stay and see what happens. You
better believe I slept light that first night. I
expected Miguele to slip into my room and knife
me. I was still looking at the world with the
suspicion of a gang member. I believed all people
thought and acted just like I did. It did not
occur to me some folks were bigger than that.
Anyway that's what happened. I stayed and
helped out for a while and did my best to learn
higher law. Eventually it came. And that's the
story of how I used to live my life. Thanks to
your Dad and then your Mom I now live by higher
law and help others to learn. So you can see that
not everyone is as fortunate as you living here.
You go with your Granddad and see, he'll show
you."
"Wow! I guess we are lucky. I never knew life
was that much different anywhere else." Sammy was
obviously impressed.
AliAnn rose and walked over to Romano. She
leaned over and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you for sharing that with us. It taught me
a lot."
Romano looked at her. He had a tear in his
eye.
AliAnn was a lot like her Mother. Sensitive
and to the point.
The kids ran back to their own hut. It was now
lunch time and they were hungry.
"What have you two been up to all morning?"
"We went to visit Romano, Mom. He told us
about how you and Dad helped him and how he came
to live by higher law. I didn't know you did all
that stuff. Why didn't you tell us?"
"It is not yours or anyones business what I or
your Father do along those lines. For all we know
Romano may have wanted to keep it private and to
himself. We did only what was needed and no one
need know about it. You must also learn that
lesson. If you help someone you are not supposed
to talk about it, otherwise it becomes a burden to
you. It appears as if you helped for your sake and
not for the one you helped. You cannot become a
hero if only you are talking about your feats. It
is far better to keep quiet, completely."
"I guess you're right Mom. I guess you've done
other things too, right?"
"Certainly, Sammy. That is what you do when
you live by higher law. It is your job to help
others in need. It is also your job to leave
before they have a chance to thank you. You are
not to remain and seek fame and glory. That will
only do you harm. Do the good deed and leave."
"I guess I can see that, Mom. When we have
everything it is important that we help those in
need of help. I can see, too, that to expect
thanks, appreciation, gratitude is the wrong
thing. How come you are so wise?"
Eloise gave him a slap on the bum. "Get out of
here. Go get your Father for lunch. Flattery will
get you anything you want from your Mother so get
out of here so I won't have to treat you nice."
Sammy laughed. He long knew his Mother enjoyed
his appreciation of her talents and abilities. He
took a run around the village looking for his
Father. Eventually he found him at the river's
edge, along with his Grandfather. "Hey Dad,
Grandpa, Mom says it's time for lunch."
"Hi Sammy. How are you today. My you were up
and away early. Where did you go?"
"AliAnn and I went over to Romano's hut. He
told us about his life before Dad was able to talk
to him. He told us the whole story, Dad. How come
you didn't tell us about it?"
"Mostly because it was none of your business
you talkative little monster." Mazunta grabbed
Sammy and threw him up onto his shoulder as if he
were a sack of potatoes. Sammy was laughing.
Then Mazunta started to bounce and as he did
it squeezed the air out of Sammy with each bounce.
"Uuugh! Uuugh! Uuugh! I give up! I give up!"
Sammy was laughing so hard he could hardly get the
words out. His Dad was laughing hard as well.
The pair of them sat down on the sand until
the moment of reverie was over.
"Beat you home!" Mazunta was up and running.
Sammy had to hurry. He got up and tore out of
there with the ferocity of a striking cat. He was
lean and muscular from all the ball games he had
played on the beach.
It was a good thing Mazunta had a head start.
Sammy was as fleet as a cheetah. Fast. Before
Mazunta could reach home Sammy had passed him.
"What was all that about?"
"Look, Mom, I beat him. He's getting to be old
and fat." Sammy laughed as he ducked a swing from
his Father.
Both of them were puffed out from the run.
Right after them came Sam. He didn't run and
he wasn't puffed out. "So, Maz, it looks like you
could use some more exercise!" Sam winked at
Mazunta.

Without realizing it, I walked right into a police stakeout
at my local Blockbuster. When a young man stepped out the
door, a group of officers pounced, cuffing him and hustling
him into a squad car.
Seeing my astonished frozen expression, one cop came over
and said, "When they say the movie is due by noon the next
day... they mean it!"
