TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

When did doctors figure out what was causing childbed fever?

What happened to Dr. Semmelweis?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What accident led to the discovery of penicillin?

The discovery of penicillin is often credited to a chance
discovery by scientist Alexander Fleming, a British
bacteriologist who was experimenting with bacteria cultures.
Supposedly, Fleming left his cultures by an open window and
they became contaminated by mold that was blown in through
the window. Mold contaminating a culture dish wasn't really
that unusual, but Fleming noticed something interesting: no
germs were growing around the mold. Fleming decided to find
out what caused the germs to stop growing and what kind of
mold he was dealing with. So he grew MORE of the mold and
experimented with it. He found it acted against anthrax and
diphtheria without side effects. By chance, he'd discovered
penicillin, a drug useful for fighting numerous diseases and
widely hailed as a miracle medicine.

What was "childbed fever"?

Fortunately, it's a disease we don't see a lot of anymore.
At one time, childbed fever (or puerperal fever) killed many
women following childbirth. Where did the infection come
from? From doctor's hands. Doctors weren't washing their
hands thoroughly before delivering babies. It wasn't
uncommon, even, for a doctor to move from a dissecting room
into a maternity ward without changing clothes or washing
hands.

You Get What You Ask For!

The teacher wrote

"Like I ain't had no fun in months"

on the blackboard and then she said,

"Timmy, how should I correct that?"

Timmy replied,

"Maybe you should get a new boyfriend?"

Few there are who realize, and lucky they are, that
understand they get exactly what they ask for.

Part and parcel of the power of the universe and the potency
of self image is that the words that come out of your mouth
make things happen.

Your attitudes of mind govern your speech and what you
pronounce out of your mouth comes to pass. That is a
universal law and one of the primary reasons why one should
pronounce affirmations out loud.

If the teacher, above, understood the law she would have
phrased the question differently. As it is she got precisely
that for which she asked.

There are those who say "Well I ask for a T.V. and didn't
get it." All I can say is look out, it's on it's way. The
law does not say that what you ask for will appear
instantly. That will happen if you are a Master at living by
higher law. Nonetheless, what you ask for will appear.

There are several points being made here. The first is to
have you understand that the words you pronounce out of your
mouth will come to pass. The second is that it is wise to do
your thinking before you speak, because of this truth. And
finally, it is for this reason that one is continually
admonished to "If you can't say anything nice, don't say
anything at all."

In other words, speak only nice things. Don't let negative
attitudes or reactions control your speech. Permit yourself
the discipline and luxury or speaking only nice things.

Have you ever noticed how you come away from someone who has
long practiced that philosophy? I bet you say to yourself
and others, "Gee! She's a nice lady." or "Gee! He's a nice
guy."

If you would like to be appreciated in that light, then
speak only nice things, do only nice deeds and spread love
wherever you go.

As a test, for a day, just try it. If you would change your
life to make it more prosperous, happier, influence others
in a constructive and positive way, then do this one thing,
SPEAK ONLY NICE THINGS.

You can live your life in full knowledge and full assurance
that ...

Some Thoughts About Soy
PART 3 of 5

The September 2005 issue of Journal of Lipid Research
published the findings of research showing that a diet rich
in soy protein helps protect against hepatic steatosis
(fatty liver). Fatty liver disease is characterized by an
increased production of fatty acids in the liver. The
condition is associated with the development of insulin
resistance, and can result in liver enlargement and chronic
liver disease. There is currently no treatment for this
potentially fatal condition.

For 160 days, researchers fed soy protein diets to rats bred
to develop diabetes and fatty liver. Although the rats
developed obesity and hyperinsulinemia as expected, they
failed to exhibit an accumulation of cholesterol and
triglycerides in their livers. The effects of the soy diet
appeared to be due to a low expression of genes involved in
the synthesis of fatty acids and triglycerides in the liver.
Additionally, the soy-rich diet also increased the breakdown
of fatty acids in the liver, further lowering the
accumulation of fat in the liver. Although more research is
needed on the subject, researchers believe the results
indicate that consumption of soy protein could reduce
insulin resistance and its resulting damage to the liver and
kidneys. J Lipid Res. 2005 Sep;46(9):1823-32” (closed quote)

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

"Giles, why do you need such a security
system?" Sammy was inquisitive.

"Sammy, we take in a great deal of money here.
We don't need or want it but the people just keep
putting it in the bucket out front. We have to
empty it several times a day. Once a day three of
us take the money and deposit it in the bank.
There are people out there who think they want the
money more than we do. They want control of the
shrine so they can get their hands on it. We have
had attacks from common thugs right up to the
sophisticated efforts of the church, all wanting
to get their hands on this money. Crazily enough
it was because of the church this shrine exists in
the first place. It was the church who
commissioned the killing of Riata. They didn't
know what they were up against, and they remain
that stupid today. They still don't know what they
are up against. Your Grandfather had a run in with
them just six months ago. They are still reeling
from that one, yet they refuse to move from their
established platform.

Anyway, we have had people try to sneak in the
back way. They don't know of the traps we have set
up and the first thing they do is trip the levers
that tips over the barrels of oil. They get
covered in oil and sand. They are a mess, then the
net falls on them and literally ties them up. By
the time they finish fighting the mess they are in
they are as weak as puppies. We have no trouble
with them after that. Mind you we do have a mess
to clean up, but that's okay."

"Wow! Why would the church want to take over
the orphanage?"

"For the money only. That is the chief purpose
of their being. They are now and have been
primarily concerned with raising as much money as
they can get their hands on. They think they are
serving the people but, in truth, they really
don't care about that. It's the money they are
after. That's what your Grandfather was mad about
when he started his fight with the local church.
They used to have four places close to the shrine
where they stationed priests. They would listen to
the people after the people had been to the
shrine, and always there was the collection plate
in plain view. They used it solely as a means of
getting money out of the people. Your Grandfather
shut that down in one quick move. Then he cut off
all other revenues for the church in this region.
The church is now in trouble. There is no
attendance. They gave nothing but guilt and fear,
then expected to be paid for it. Your Grandfather
changed all that."

"He never told us about that." AliAnn was all
ears.

"No, I don't suppose he would. He never talks
about what he has done. All those who live by
higher law are like that. They live by the creed,
'do the good deed, then leave'. That was the day
Jesus visited your Grandfather, right out there in
the street, and changed his countenance. That was
the day he became bigger and had his hair turned
white. And that is the day he began to wear white
clothing. He has very important work to do. He has
become a very special man."

"I guess we have a lot to learn, Giles. There
is much we do not know, even about our own
family."

"Yes, Sammy, maybe especially about your
Mother. She is the first cause in this area. It
was your Mother who taught Riata and her sister
Oomano higher law. It was your Mother who lovingly
supported Miguele and his family even though it
was Miguele who tried to hold her up and rob her.
It was your Mother who created the environment for
all of us to learn higher law. Even your Father
has been influential in this area. You live in a
very special family, you two. You have some pretty
big boots to fill when it is your turn."

"Yes, Giles. We know that. Mom and Dad are
highly thought of at home. We know we are
fortunate."

"Good. At the same time I'll bet they aren't
strict. I'll bet they let you get away with near
anything."

"Nearly. We talk a lot about why we should do
things a certain way. Mom and Dad relate
everything to the law 'As ye sow, so shall ye
reap.' They have shown us that whatever we do has
a result. If we want good results we must conduct
ourselves with good actions. They do not get mad
at us. They don't spank us. They know that if we
want things to be good it is within us to cause
that condition to exist. They have shown us the
way. Even in the village, Mom and Dad teach all
the kids. Nearly all are close to living by higher
law."

"That's wonderful. Your Mom and Dad are very
wise people."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Yankee: What is the origin of the term "Yankee"

The word comes from a nickname for the dutch, Jan Kaas,
meaning "John Cheese." Holland has long bee famous for its
cheeses and so the nickname Jan Kaas or "John Cheese," is
appropriate to them. In pirate days, English sailors adopted
the term as a derisive name for the Dutch freebooters. In
this sense it became familiar in New York. Then the dutch
settlers there - noting its unpleasant significance - began
to apply it to the English settlers of Connecticut because
they believed the Connecticut English to be far more
enterprising than ethical. The term spread to the other
colonies - though at first it was almost always used to
refer with dislike to the citizens of a colony farther
North. It still is in certain sections - often with a "damn"
placed before it.

----------------

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in
Africa, taking her faithful, aged poodle named Cuddles along
for the company. One day the poodle starts chasing
butterflies and before long Cuddles discovers that she's
lost. Wandering about, she notices a leopard heading rapidly
in her direction with the intention of having lunch. The old
poodle thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in trouble now!"

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, she immediately
settles down to chew on the bones with her back to the
approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the
old poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious
leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in
mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks
away into the trees. "Whew!" says the leopard, "That was
close! That old poodle nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene
from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to
good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So
off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the
leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be
up.

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the
beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The
young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says,
"Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen
to that conniving canine!"

The old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on
his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?", but
instead of running, the dog sits down with her back to her
attackers, pretending she hasn't seen them yet, and just
when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says:
"Where's that monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me
another leopard!"
