ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

When did doctors figure out what was causing childbed fever?

It wasn't until the middle of the nineteenth century that a
physician, Ignaz Semmelweis of Vienna, realized how
puerperal fever was being transmitted to new mothers and
urged his colleagues to wash up! You'd think they would have
listened. Instead, many physicians attacked and ridiculed
Semmelweis, refusing to believe they themselves could be
transmitting the fatal contagion. Interestingly, while the
maternal mortality rate due to puerperal fever at Dr.
Semmelweis' Vienna General Hospital was 12 percent, the rate
was only 2 percent at a nearby facility run by midwives.
That attracted Dr. Semmelweis' attention.

What happened to Dr. Semmelweis?

Dr. Semmelweis eventually moved to Budapest, where he put
his theory into action. Ordering doctors under him to wash
their hands in chlorinated lime water before delivering
infants, Semmelweis saw his antiseptic methods lower the
maternal mortality rate to less than 1 percent. But he was
still sharply criticized. He died, ironically, of childbed
fever. While treating patients, he contracted the infection
through a cut in his hand. The year of his death, 1865, was
the same year that British surgeon Joseph Lister conducted
the first antiseptic operation - spraying a carbolic acid
solution during surgery. Following that event, the
controversy over Semmelweis' idea ended.

Apple may sell 10 million iPod nanos this quarter
by AppleInsider Staff

Apple may produce and sell more than 10 million of its new
iPod nano digital music players during the three month
period ending in December, says UBS Investment Research.

Advertisement For Apple's quarter ending in June -- the last
fiscal quarter in which it has released results -- the
company sold a combined total of 6,155,000 iPods, which is
the most iPods its ever shipped in a single quarter.

UBS had been modeling Apple to sell 8.3 million total iPods
in the December quarter, but recently met with industry
sources in Asia who said those estimates may prove to be
conservative. The firm's sources indicate iPod nano build
orders for the quarter could exceed 10 million units. Apple
sells various other iPod models which would only add to this
figure.

"In short, our meetings were very positive for Apple into
year-end and next, in terms of potential new iPods and
possible build plans," said analyst Ben Reitzes in a
research note released to clients on Monday.

The Wall Street analyst believes an increase in expected
iPod sales could add as much as 10 cents to consensus
earnings-per-share estimates for the quarter, which are
currently at 45 cents.

Meanwhile, Reitzes also believes Apple may produce a new
hard disk drive (HDD)-based iPod before the end of the year.

"Our checks back recent reports that a handheld device
capable of video playback could be in the works," the
analyst said. "We would expect possible new devices to be
HDD-based and look a bit like a larger white iPod with a
bigger color screen."

However, UBS estimates Apple will sell only 4.5 million
HDD-based iPods in fiscal year 2006, which would be down 30%
year-over-year, due primarily to potential cannibalization
from flash based players such as the nano.

UBS also said it sees momentum building for Apple's
portables and iMacs:

"Our checks in Asia back this view, implying that sales of
portables for Apple (particularly iBooks) are solid, which
could make our estimates for overall Mac growth of 41% in
4Q05 and 28% in 1Q06 look conservative," the firm said.

UBS continues to rate Apple a "Buy" with a price target of
$64.

Some Thoughts About Soy
PART 4 of 5

First soy bulletin: Soy protein reduces breast cancer risk
in women A meta-analysis of 14 studies relating to soy
consumption and breast cancer in women around the world was
published in the April volume of The International Journal
of Cancer Prevention. Soy intake was assessed in one of the
three ways, soyfoods (as a group of foods or a specific type
of soyfoods, e.g. bean curd), soy protein, or soy
isoflavones.

The analysis of studies on soy intake and breast cancer
indicated that eating soy protein on a regular basis may
reduce a woman's chance of developing breast cancer by up to
22 percent. Seven of the 14 publications provided data on
breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Among postmenopausal
women, regular soy intake decreased the risk of breast
cancer by 36 percent. In addition, soy consumption by
adolescents may be related to a lower risk of developing
breast cancer later in life. The results of these analyses
show that regular consumption of soyfoods is associated with
a lower risk of breast cancer in women.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

"What do you do with all the money you
collect? You clearly don't need any of it."

"You're right AliAnn. We don't need it. At
first it was quite a problem. Now we have a system
of seeking out those folks who are doing good but
might need some assistance. We must be very
careful about it. We cannot get anyone into a
position where they depend on us. That would work
to their disadvantage and ours. So we select very
carefully. Usually what we do is try to provide
the conditions where they can go out and earn
money for themselves to support their needs. That
way each retains and develops their self esteem
while helping their fellow man.

If we began to give the money away without
that principle in mind then there would be a never
ending stream of people coming in here with their
hands out.

Another thing we do is make sure no one knows
the source of aid. We want no thanks for it for
the money is really not ours. It was given in
trust for the purpose of doing good work.

We try but we want no one to know about it.
Does that make sense?"

"Perfect sense. We know what you mean and
understand the principle. Good for you. Thank you
for showing us around and thank you for sharing
with us."

"You are most welcome."

Giles took the kids back to Sam. That was not
as easy as one might think. By now, Sam Henry was
completely encircled by the rest of the kids in
the orphanage. They were all listening intently to
him as he was explaining something. The love given
off by Sam was felt by all within a half block. It
was especially strong here, inside the orphanage.
The kids were absorbing it as if they were
sponges. They were listening, too, to the message
Sam was giving them."

"Ah! I see Giles has brought back my charges.
Guys, this is Sammy and AliAnn."

At once the Sammy and AliAnn were made
welcome. They felt right at home.

"What's up Granddad?"

"I was just talking with the kids about the
law and about their Maker living within them. I
was talking about them believing that and when
they do they have the power of creation just like
Jesus said. Are you two ready to go?"

"I guess so Grandpa, but we like it here. This
is a nice place." AliAnn was reluctant to leave.
She had made friends.

"I know, sweetheart, yet there is much more to
learn and see. You can come back here anytime you
want." Sam was leading into letting the kids know
they were about to step across the veil of
simplicity.

"Let's be on our way. Thank you, kids, for
your hospitality. We will return. Thank you."
With that, Sam took the hands of Sammy and
AliAnn and they vanished to the eyes of the kids
in the orphanage.

They reappeared again at Miguele's and
Abetta's.

"Where are we now, Grandpa?"

"AliAnn, we are still in Matto Grosso, but
across town. This is the house of very dear
friends, Miguele and Abetta. Come in, I'll bet
Abetta will make us a lunch."

"Hi you two. How are you?"

"Oh! Sam! How are you. To what do we owe the
pleasure?"

"I was just taking Sammy and AliAnn around to
show them the different ways people live. They
need the exposure. We just spent some time at the
orphanage and at the shrine. They had not seen
that before and I thought they should. Since it
was supper time I thought they could use some of
your fantastic cooking." Sam winked at Abetta.

"Sam Henry, you are always the trickster. I'll
bet he's been telling you two all sorts of crazy
stories hasn't he." Abetta winked back at Sam as
she came and gave him a big hug.

"Hello, Sam. It is good to see you again. I'm
glad you brought the kids around. I'd like to fill
them in with my story. I think they already heard
parts of it."

"That would be a good idea, Miguele. I'll help
Abetta in the kitchen."

"So, you two, come over here and sit down and
I'll fill you in on parts of the story you may not
know."

"Mr. Miguele, are you the Father to Riata and
Oomano?"

"Yes, young lady, I am. And I am the
Father-in-law to that big brute Romano."

They laughed.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Zany: Where did a fool get the name "zany"?

In the plays performed by the Italian commedia dell' arte -
in which the servants acted as clowns and bore the name
zani. The word "zany" was first used in English to designate
a comic performer attending on a a clown - a "stooge".

HA! HA! HA!

A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest were out for a
Sunday afternoon flight on a small private plane. Suddenly,
the plane developed engine trouble. In spite of the best
efforts of the pilot, the plane started to go down. Finally,
the pilot grabbed a parachute, yelled to the passengers that
they had better jump, and then he bailed out.

Unfortunately, there were only three parachutes remaining.
The doctor grabbed one and said "I'm a doctor, I save lives,
so I must live," and jumped out.

The lawyer then said, "I'm a lawyer and lawyers are the
smartest people in the world. I deserve to live." He also
grabbed a parachute and jumped.

The priest looked at the little boy and said, "My son, I've
lived a long and full life. You are young and have your
whole life ahead of you. Take the last parachute and live in
peace."

The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest and
said, "Not to worry, Father. The 'smartest man in the world'
just took off with my back pack."
