TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

So what's wrong with kudzu?
How fast can kudzu grow?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How did malaria get its name?
Malaria, we know now, is caused by germs carried by
mosquitoes. But before anyone knew that, it was believed
that evil spirits in the night air caused the disease.
Hence, the name "malaria" means "bad air."
What is kudzu?
Poet James Dickey referred to it as "a vegetal form of
cancer." Others have described it as "the vine that ate the
South." Kudzu is an Asian bean vine imported to the US South
in the 1930s in an effort to improve the soil. Seen then as
a "miracle" vine, it was hoped that planting large
quantities of kudzu would replace nitrogen in erosion-torn
soil. The plant seemed perfect because its deep roots
gripped the soil and could be planted even in barren fields
where nothing else would grow. Farmers could get the miracle
vine free from the Soil Conservation Service, which heavily
promoted the plant. In fact, some farmers were paid as much
as eight dollars an acre as an incentive to plant the vine.
During the Great Depression, hundreds of men were employed
by the Civilian Conservation Corps to plant kudzu.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
I Can Resist Everything But Temptation!
Dear John,
I have been unable to sleep since I broke off our
relationship. Won't you forgive and forget? Your absence is
breaking my heart. I was a fool - nobody can take your
place. I love you.
All my love,
Jill
P.S. Congratulations on winning this week's California state
lottery.
Today we have a double edged sword. On the one side we must
guard our own minds and hearts from the attitude shown in
the joke above, and on the other hand we must also guard
against those who would come at us because they think we are
rich.
I'm not sure whether we call it greed or not. However, I do
know that when someone comes into money, it becomes very
easy to want to snuggle up to them somehow, in hopes of
gleaning some of the benefits they have received. This
action just seems to pop up. Don't give in to it. Be happy
for the person you are thinking about and proceed with your
own life, knowing that you are being looked after, by your
Maker, in just the way it is supposed to be.
Think clearly, too, that money, especially sudden money, can
be a burden that keeps one in bondage as they foolishly
think they have it all. Remember, "It is easier to pull a
camel through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man
to get into heaven".
And on the matter of protecting yourself against those who
would pry you from your money, I, personally, follow two
practices. First, I don't get into money discussions with
anyone, no matter how simple or controllable it might seem.
I just don't talk about money. Second, I make certain that
it is I who makes the decisions I want to make when it comes
to money. I do not allow myself to be "sold", but, rather, I
decide to purchase, or give.
I have yet to hear about any lottery winner, you know, the
big grand prize winner, whose life wasn't completely
destroyed by sudden winnings. While that is, no doubt,
created by the winners poor grasp on the meaning of life, it
is mightily helped along by the rash of sudden friends that
come calling. These folks pop right out of the woodwork,
amazing.
The letter above gives us fair warning. Those of us working
diligently on creating our own internet businesses will, one
day, if not already, be faced with this condition. Set the
attitude now and it will no longer be a problem.

Some Thoughts About Soy
PART 5 of 5
Second soy bulletin: Soy associated with reduced fracture
risk in postmenopausal women A study published in the
September 12 2005 issue of the journal Archives of Internal
Medicine found that postmenopausal women whose dietary
intake of soy was high had a lower risk of bone fracture
than women whose intake was comparatively low. Researchers
analyzed data from women who took part in the Shanghai
Women's Health study, which included approximately 75,000
Chinese women aged 40 to 70.
Women consuming 13.27 grams or more per day had a 37 percent
lower risk of fracture than those whose soy intake was less
than 4.98 grams per day. Isoflavones from soy were found to
provide a similar protective benefit. Those with the highest
intake of isoflavones had a 35 percent reduced risk of
fracture compared to the risk of women whose intake was the
lowest. The inverse association was more pronounced among
women in early menopause. Diets high in soy may reduce the
risk of bone fracture in postmenopausal women, particularly
during the early years following menopause. Arch Intern Med.
2005;165:1890-1895.
Conclusion: You have just read several opinions. I heard one
scientist say "You are undoubtedly aware that there really
are no products worth anything that don't have dissenting
opinions and detractors. There are still plenty of
researchers that believe vitamin E and other antioxidants
are useless, or even dangerous, although there are hundreds
of published studies to the contrary. Soy is one of the most
researched food products of all time with a massive amount
of positive research, yet there are website and books
dedicated to alerting people to the "evils" of soy. Good and
proper science necessitates dialogue, both in the positive
and negative." Please think for yourself and look
realistically at anything you put into your body

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
"My story begins a long time ago, when your
Mother first came to this country. I was very poor
and my family was hungry and sick. I was desperate
so I took a short stick and went downtown to where
all the rich people live. I knew that only rich
tourists stay at the fancy hotel. Sure enough
there was a couple walking the street. It was just
after sunset but not yet dark. I walked up behind
this couple and I put the stick hard into the back
of the man and told them both to put their hands
on the wall of the building and don't look back.
I told them I wanted their money. Your Mother
knew what was going on. She turned around and
looked at me. She sent love into me and told me to
go home, that my family had lots of food, new
clothes and they were all happy and healthy. I
didn't know what to believe. This sounded crazy
but it somehow had a ring of authority in it.
Somehow I knew she was right.
I broke down and cried, right there. I tried
to take your Mother's hand and kiss it to thank
her. She would have none of this homage. She once
more asked me to go home, that all was well.
I left and came home as fast as I could. Your
Mother was right. There was lots of food in the
kitchen, the girls were no longer sick and the
house was cleaned and bright. Mom and the girls
were in new clothes and the instant I stepped
inside I, too was dressed in new clothing. We all
wept in gratitude that night. Momma wanted to know
what happened. I told her the story I am telling
you now. Then, two days later, your Mother came
here. She drove here in that truck you passed
outside. She gave me that truck. She said it would
never need gas, oil, repairs, maintenance or
washing. She said it would never let me down. Then
she left, after meeting the family.
Since that day I used the truck to deliver
parcels while I earned myself a living. We have
done very well. We have never wanted for food or
anything from that day to this. That is one of the
reasons I used to bring home street kids. We were
poor and were helped. Now it was our turn to help.
Your Mother came back, too, some time later.
She asked if she could take the girls with her for
a couple days to a week. We let her. When the
girls came back home they had learned to live by
higher law. Riata then went out and started that
orphanage and Oomano stayed home here and helped
with the orphanage we had going here.
One day I was delivering a parcel into the
rough part of town. Your Dad was with me for he
and your Mom had come to visit us. I went into
this building and walked up the stairs to where I
thought the parcel was supposed to go. I knocked
on the door. I heard some scurrying going on
behind the door. Then suddenly the door opened and
four guys came rushing out. One of them was a big
guy. He knocked me flat and took a knife and
stabbed me several times. I was bleeding to death.
I knew I was gone, I was going to die.
The next thing I knew your Father was standing
over me commanding me to rise. I will never forget
those words. They were powerful. They struck right
at the core of my being and I really didn't have
any choice. I rose up and felt myself all over.
There was no sign of blood or of wounds. I felt
fine.
Then we walked downstairs. As we came out the
door we saw those four boys taking stuff out of my
truck. You Father yelled something and they all
froze in their tracks. They couldn't move. I went
around and gathered up all the parcels they had
taken and put them back in the truck.
Your Father told them he would be back there
at two o'clock the next day if any of them wanted
to come talk. Then he released them and they fled
like scared cats.
Your Dad was back there the next day and one
of those thugs did come back. Over time he began
to think on what your Dad was saying and
eventually he wanted to leave the gang to which he
belonged.
That ended up costing him. They attacked him
and left him for dead on a garbage pile. Your Mom
and Dad found him and rendered him whole then
brought him here. You can imagine the look on his
face when he saw me, and the look on my face when
I saw him. That was some moment.
Anyway the young man stayed and helped out.
Soon the girls had him learning higher law and
eventually he learned. His name was Romano and now
he has married my daughter.
When the wedding was held, right here in our
yard, Jesus came. All those who attended the
wedding were able to advance to higher law. Jesus
removed from each any impediment to that end. That
is where your friend Mr. Striker and his wife
learned higher law. That is also the time when my
Abetta and I learned along with your Auntie Mae
and Aunt Susan. That was some wedding.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Aback: What is the reason we say that a person who is
surprised is "taken aback"
It's a nautical term. When the sails of a square-rigged
sailing ship are suddenly carried by the wind back against
the mast - as sometimes happens in a strong gale - the ship
is "taken aback" and stopped dead. So, too, a person halted
abruptly by some new development is "taken aback".
