TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Will anything kill kudzu?
Is it true that drinking too much water can kill you?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
So what's wrong with kudzu?
In Asia, the vine is respected and enjoyed. Ground kudzu
root is used in food and medicines. And the vine is pretty,
producing sweet-smelling blossoms of several colors. The
problem: the vine grows MUCH more readily in the American
South than it does in Asia. The climate is perfect for it
and the insect predators that keep it in check in Asia are
nowhere to be found.
How fast can kudzu grow?
Under good conditions, such as you find in the South, the
vine can grow a foot a day. In a single summer, it can grow
more than fifty feet in every direction and cover the ground
four feet deep. The vine can completely cover whole houses,
abandoned vehicles, trees, railroad tracks, utility poles,
anything and everything that gets in its way. People trying
to get rid of it have used everything from hatchets and
chainsaws to fire and chemicals. But it keeps growing and it
keeps coming back. Legend has it in the South that you need
to close your windows at night to keep the kudzu out! At
present, more than seven million acres of land in the South
are covered with kudzu.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
Jack-o-lanterns have not always been carved out of pumpkins.
They were intially carved out of turnips, until the Irish
arrived in America and exchanged turnips for pumpkins.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Are You Typecast?
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking
around with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Hunting Flies" He responded.
"Oh. Killing any?" She asked.
"Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he replied.
Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell?"
He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone."
If you were a movie star one of your concerns would be that
folks would keep you typecast. You know, not expand your
acting roles to include different types of characters.
Whether you know it or not, that happens to all of us in
real life, too.
We get to be known by the friends we keep, the places in
which we circulate, but most of all by our actions.
It's, too bad, especially when one wants to change and make
improvement for while one can become known as a bad
character in an instant, becoming a good character takes a
lifetime.
One of my favorite sayings is by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Of his
many observations he once commented that "Your actions speak
so loudly that what you say to the contrary . . . I cannot
hear."
Men, generally, I guess, tend to be beer drinkers and ladies
have a rep, though I think it is being taken over by men,
for being on the phone talking all the time.
Some of the things we do may be humorous. Some may be
harmless, yet some will make a direct determination by you
as whether people trust you, like you, love you, respect
you.
Each of us must, daily, ask how am I being perceived today?
Becoming the person you want to be is a daily task of being
that person. Maxwell Maltz, author of "Psycho-Cybernetics"
says that it takes twenty one days to establish a habit.
Whether it takes more or less is not so much the question as
continually performing as the person you want to be. Sooner
or later it will be such an ingrained habit, that is who you
will be.
That is the secret of becoming rich. Everyone of us is like
the little gosling newly hatched from the egg. It imprints
on the first thing it sees. If that is Momma then the
gosling will be a goose.
Every one of us emulates our parents . . EVERYONE OF US. If
your parents aren't rich, then neither will you be, until
you have this realization and make changes to your thinking
patterns. Sorry folks . . . that's just the way it is.
I am one of those who, when asked "How are you?", always
responds "Fantastic!", or "Terrific" or, "Wonderful".
Some folks think it phony, only because it is their opinion
that no one can feel that good all the time. They think
that, of course, because they have never tried it. How
little they know.
When I rise in the morning I am happy to see the day, ready
to go to work and look forward to whatever is going to
happen today. I feel fantastic, I think fantastic and I am
fantastic. I feel that all day long and when given the
opportunity to re-affirm it by responding to the question .
. . . I say "I'm Fantastic! How are you?"
Most often I get, "Oh! Okay I guess!" or "I could be
better!" or, "You know, same old, same old!".
Those are actions and that is how these people become known.
It is almost as if they are afraid to feel "Fantastic". But,
we all make choices, don't we. You can be who you want to
be. You need only make the choice. Following the lessons of
Eloise would be a wonderful place to start.
If you would be known as happy, healthy, fantastic, helpful,
trustworthy, and worthy of respect . . .think . . Act . .
and TALK that way.

Don't Read This Unless Your
Health Is Important To You!
A while ago, researchers released results of a study that is
critically important to many of us. Basically it creates
possible links between the environment and our health,
especially cancer. Our lifestyle choices may be more
responsible for the development of cancer than our genes.
Why is this so important? BECAUSE IN THAT CASE, WE COULD DO
SOMETHING TO PREVENT IT! That way you can prevent a lot of
future grief, anxiety, and damage.
The results of this Scandinavian study were in the New
England Journal of Medicine.
http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/343/2/78
Quote: "This finding indicates that the environment has the
principal role in causing sporadic cancer".
So the results of this study are music to those of us who
want to be in control of our lives. Now we know what to do
and how to go about looking after ourselves. We suspect our
water and our foods provide less than adequate nutrition and
yet we were powerless to do much. Now with confidence you
CAN create your healthy future.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The kids listened to every syllable, every
nuance, every inflection in Miguele's voice. They
knew some of the story from Romano, some from the
shrine and now the rest from Miguele. The story
was consistent in content from all sources, only
delivered from the speakers perspective.
The kids absorbed, looked and listened. They
were so intent they made connection with Miguele's
soul.
"My, you two. You are good students. Now tell
me what you are doing here."
"We heard this story from Romano, this
morning. We heard parts of it again at the
orphanage. Granddad thought we lived a sheltered
life. He wanted to show us how some folks live
different than us. So, he is taking us where we
can see different things."
"Well, AliAnn, if I know your Granddad, he'll
do just that. It is true, you know. Everybody in
the world leads a sheltered life. That is to say
that we all get so wrapped up in our own local
ways, that we fail to look further afield to see
how others live. While it is not necessary, it
sure gives one an expanded perspective on life and
is a very healthy exercise."
"I guess that's what Grandpa figures."
"Sammy, your Grandpa is a very wise man. He
has been all over the world and has seen nearly
all there is to see. He has helped people in all
walks of life, on all continents and in all
circumstances. So has your Mom and Dad. It is true
you are both very fortunate to have chosen that
family in which to live. Now, though, is the time
to expand your view and prepare to live by higher
law. You are coming of age and it is your turn.
That is what your Granddad has in mind."
"Thank you Mr. Miguele, for telling us your
story. Mom and Dad don't tell us these things.
They just keep on showing us the path and telling
us about the law 'As ye sow, so shall ye reap'."
"And well they should, Sammy. That is the
foundation of all the things you will do with your
life. Understanding that law deep in your guts
will put you in good stead for your future. I am
glad to hear they are doing that. The real
question, my boy, is, are you listening?" Miguele
ruffled up Sammy's hair when he spoke that last
question.
"Yes, Mr. Miguele. We both listen. We know
very well that the things we think and the actions
we take will always give results. So if we want
good results, we need to have good thoughts and
actions. We're lucky, too, to live where we do.
The village is small enough that Mom and Dad are
teaching all the village kids. Sooner or later the
entire village will live by higher law. That will
be a powerful thing."
"You bet, Sammy. It will be that. So now what?
Where are you going from here?"
"Right to the supper table, Sir. I've got
supper ready and if I know these kids I'll bet
they're hungry. Sam here kept them busy all day
and never gave a thought to meals, I bet." Abetta
was calling them to supper.
They all sat up and had a meal that was
delicious. Abetta was known far and wide for her
cooking. This meal certainly got her two more
young converts. She had fried up some pork steaks,
some Texas sized pan fried potatoes and then some
refried beans. On the side was some delicious
fresh bread and some real butter, plus lots of
salsa. The kids mouths were watering just looking
at it and when they were permitted to dig in they
ate as if they were each eating for two.
"Sam, I was asking the kids where they were
going next. Do you have any ideas?"
"Sure do, Miguele. I thought we would go over
to visit Sonora, Hemno, Kenyata and Mombudo."
"Wow! That will be a visit you will like,
kids. Do you know where that is?"
"No, Mr. Miguele. Where?"
"That is half way around the world on a
continent called Africa. You are now on the
continent of South America. Both are about the
same size and are on each side of the Atlantic
Ocean. Where you live is about 1000 miles up river
from here. You have been to the shrine and
orphanage, that is just in the center of this
city. Now you will be going half way around the
world to visit some real good friends. They live
on a hill that overlooks the plains of the
Serengeti. You will love that."
"That sounds terrific. When can we go
Grandpa?"
"Settle down kids, settle down. I think maybe
you two should get yourselves some sleep. By the
time it gets to be near midnight here the sun is
just thinking of getting up where our friends
live. So we are in no hurry just at this moment.
Mind you when we get there you will be busy all
day, so maybe we should get some sleep here, then
leave maybe one o'clock in the morning. How's
that?"
"If you say so Grandpa

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Bachelor's Button: How did the flower known as "bachelor's
button" get that name?
The flower got its name from its similarity in appearance to
the buttons on men's clothing - since these were originally
covered with rough cloth. Then, because of its name, the
flower came to have significance interpreting the chances of
a bachelor with his sweetheart. If a bachelor put one of
these flowers in his pocket and it did not fade but simply
dried out he could hope for the best; but it it wilted and
dies it was a bad omen.

One day at a trial, an eminent psychologist was called to
testify. A severe no nonsense professional, she sat down in
the witness chair unaware that it's rear legs were set
precariously on the back of the raised platform.
"Will you state your name?" asked the district attorney.
Tilting back in her chair, she opened her mouth to answer,
but instead catapulted head-over-heels backward and landed
in a stack of exhibits and recording equipment.
Everyone watched in stunned silence as she extricated
herself, rearranged her disheveled dress and hair and was
reseated on the witness stand. The glare she directed at
onlookers dared anyone to so much as smirk.
"Well, doctor," continued the district attorney without
changing expression, "we could start with an easier
question."
